I can't say enought about this place, I had the Shrimp Chilly and it was heaven... don't go spicy go with the house flavor and you will get blown away. Tucked away on the back of the mall (the one with Sprouts), this little restaurant cooks some pretty excellent Indian food. The place in not fancy, but not too bad either, better than it looks from the outside. Service is pretty fast, so it's good even for a quick bite. read more

I'm giving 5 stars because the food is fantastic. Our favorites are the Chana masala and dal tadka. The atmosphere and dishes are also worth noting. If I were to rate the service though, it would be between 1 star and 4 stars, depending on the day. They are usually well understaffed in the front. They did not actually take our order the first time, so we had to wait about twice as long as they told us. Also, we ordered a medium spice level but when it arrived the food was significantly hotter than that. Otherwise, all our food (vegetarian biryani, chicken chilli, paneer chilli, shrimp chilli) was delicious and we might return again. I had a mystical experience dining here today which I'll give my lovely and generous friend credit for! I liked the - something - for- everyone- eclectic - decor. Multi colored Tibetan flags, Buddhas, a pirates ship, bronze like bas relief of Chinese style bridge in a garden gives this place that Universal Feeling. Comfortable seating with glass topped tables and linen tablecloths a plus. In a word Welcoming. Tucked away near Sprouts market in a shopping mall it's a surprise to find a Himalayan kitchen here offering respectable restaurant row style North Indian fare and thank goodness as the Indian that changed hands in town offers stale old food at high prices. I ordered Malai Kofta on 4 for medium spicy was good - not fantastic - but it's a very tough dish to do! Tried the sweet Naan with currants that I'd never seen before anywhere was a bit dry while my companions garlic version was better. My request for toasted cumin to add to my plain lassi was honored with grace and I appreciated that. Basmati rice was fresh and a tad more ghee in it would make it even better. Our waiter was sweet, pleasant and gracious. Something for everyone here Vegetarians and Non alike. We ate very well for cheap: An appetizer, 3 curries, two Naan, basmati rice and 2 drinks! This place is wonderful! My friend and I had different dishes from the lunch special. The lunch special allows 2 "curry" dishes and includes lentil soup and naan bread. Oh my goodness! The naan bread was hot and so good. Sometimes naan can be so dry..not this naan. The lentil soup had nice texture and a great blend of spices. I requested medium spiciness level on my choices of tikka masala and chicken curry. Both were really tasty. My friend a lamb dish and chicken curry. They were a bit spicy for her but I thought they were both good. She admitted that she really doesn't do well with spiciness and heat in her food so maybe this restaurant is not her thing but it sure was mine! She loved the lentil soup and naan though. read more

We've only been here once, but it was very, very good! We got takeout. The Malai Kofta had a lot of flavor, even though I got it mild. The Chicken Momo were awesome! Pakoras were pretty typical, but still very tasty. Naan was soft and buttery. And the mango lassi was perfect! Stopped in for a nice lunch today. I had the lunch special with lamb curry and chicken tikka masala. My husband had the butter chicken. The lentil soup that started the meal was great, delicate flavors. The butter chicken was delicious, but very rich. The lamb and tikka were wonderful! We had the garlic naan and the regular naan. The regular was a better match with the butter chicken, given the richness of the dish. Enjoyed a chiya tea as well. Looking forward to returning and trying other dishes. The food was very good but it took a long time (over an hour) to get our dinner even on a Tuesday evening. They were so short handed that it was hard to get our server's attention when we needed something. The garlic and cilantro naan was excellent. This was a first visit for myself and my guest. The restaurant features a variety of Indian foods plus other area selections. I am by no means an expert on Indian delicacies but I can tell the difference between food that is delicious and food that is simply mediocre. On the other hand, my guest is quite knowledgeable and demanding about the taste and quality of her Indian meals. I found the food to be absolutely wonderful for those diners who fall into my category. And my guest...well, she could not stop raving about how authentic and enjoyable her meal was. Her food arrived first and mine arrived about 10 minutes later (not the best timing). She had Daal Soup and Nawaratan Korma and I had the Chicken Tikka. My meal came to the table sizzling full of seasoned chicken and vegetables. Yum!! My guest could not stop talking about how flavorful the lentil soup tasted and completely finished her entire entree. No small wonder since she is a strict, finicky vegetarian. Why only 4 stars??? We were enjoying the food so much that we did not notice that our order of Garlic Cilantro Naan never arrived. So I lost $2.95 and they lost 1 star. But the food at this restaurant is great so just go. read more

This restaurant has possibilities. Next time I'll order something different. The stir-fried tofu tikka was okay, but I thought stir-fried implied vegetables. It arrived as puréed tomato sauce with cubes of warm tofu, served with rice. Poor choice! I should have asked the waiter for a suggestion that is popular with gluten free vegetarians. I'll preface this by saying I have never walked out of a restaurant before we received our food in my life. We'd been here twice before and were able to look past the less than stellar service and the dirty table cloths and glasses because the food was good. We got there at 5:45 before the dinner rush. We had 4 adults, a three year old, and a baby. It took at least 15 min just for someone to come over and take our order. Then another 30 min roll by and no food. Nobody has stopped by our table this entire time to let us know the status of our food. Meanwhile my kids are hungry and restless. My brother in law asks when the food will be out and all they say is soon. Then we wait another 15 min and watched as other tables who got in after us got their entrees. That's when we decided it was time to go. I let the person at the front know we had been there for an hour with no food and to cancel our order because we were leaving. As we were packing up someone else came over and asked if there was a problem. I told him we'd been there an hour and other people who got in after us had gotten their food. He said it was because they were appetizers. That wasn't true, they had received their salads, soups AND curry entree dishes. I very calmly started to explain that waiting an hour for food was just too long especially with little kids and he WALKED AWAY FROM ME! I wasn't being a diva, I was just stating the facts of why we couldn't wait for our food anymore and he couldn't even be bothered to finish the conversation or offer an apology. Went to this place with my family for a dinner last saturday.We ordered Mismas Tarkarim and Malai Kofta. The mismas tarkarim had stale and rotten vegetables.We could sense it with the very first bite of the food. Never had this kind of experience else where. I am pregnant with my baby and was worried about possible food poisoning. I don't know how could they serve rotten food to anybody esp. a pregnant lady. Disappointed to the core !! When we told this the manager initially he said the veggies were fresh etc and he later admitted lot of other customers have been complaining about that stale smell .The malai kofta had no malai(cream). It was some koftas boiled in old sauce stored in fridge.I think this restaurant needs an inspection for its food safety standards. Never stepping into this restaurant again !!! They have lowered the standards of Nepalese/Indian food. Total waste of money! Adding to this the women's restroom has a clogged bathroom sink which makes it totally disgusting to even wash hands. read more

We have enjoyed the Himalayan Kitchen on numerous occasions, and would bet that we have averaged at least once a week since their opening. After each and every visit, we walk out discussing how great the food was. We don't write many Yelp reviews, but in this case, the Himalayan Kitchen is such a wonderful asset to the Encinitas area, that we felt compelled to share upon our experiences. Given the number of visits "under our belt", at this point we tend to order the same menu items, each visit - Papads, Vegetable Pakora, Ram Torya, Lamb Tikka Masala, and Garlic Cilantro Naan. If both daughters are with us, we add the Shrimp Tikka Masala, and sometimes the Lamb Momo or Lamb Biryani. My wife usually orders a lovely glass of pinot noir, and I either stick with water, or have a bottled Kingfisher. We always order "heat level" 7/10, and find that the intensity level is pretty consistent. Himalayan Kitchen is one of those neighborhood jewels that you always look forward to coming back to. The management and staff are so wonderful and always make us feel very welcome. First time visit (sort of) because I only got takeout - my food wasn't quite ready when I arrived, so the nice hostess motioned me to their extremely small waiting area by the door. I was offered water which is always a nice and hospitable touch by a restaurant when you're waiting on takeout. Got my food (butter chicken, rice and garlic naan.) The thick and deeply flavorful sauce was the perfect level of spicy for me (which was a 5), with an excellent serving of chicken. The only downside was that the naan got a little moist from the foil in which it was wrapped, so it didn't have that perfect naan crust and texture. No fault of the restaurant. The only fault was mine, for not dining at the restaurant properly and sampling way more of their delicious food. I'll be back soon for sure! read more

Simply amazing. Best Indian food in North County. The have a branch in San Diego on Midway Rd, not too far away from Point Loma and Valley View Casino Arena. I'd go there all the time when I'm around the area. I'd tell my friends that it is the best Indian restaurant in town. I'd take my clients there too and they'd want to go back there when I see them again. I'm so thrilled they have opened up a restaurant in Encinitas. Now, I don't have to drive far for great Indian food. The curries are extremely tasty and their biryani is so delicious. I love the momos and tandoori as well.
