I have never tried Indian food before, but my friends who I was with had them before. One of my friends has been at this place multiple times and raves about it.. Street Parking was easy to find, 1 server was there on a Wednesday but he got us seated quickly, we scanned the menu and we ordered samosas, butter chicken, chicken vindaloo, chicken tandoori, garlic naan and the mango lassis. I must say, we let our friend order for us and she ordered all the right things, everything was delicious! Dipping the naan on the sauces was so heavenly! We were very pleased with our lunches! They were generous enough for lunch! We ordered two Lamb dishes and were able to order another side each. My sister ordered one of the chicken curries and a veggie curry as well. I ordered a veggie curry as well and my other sister ordered the Salmon curry as her second side. We had their Naan bread, freshly made! We all enjoyed our meals and will return again!! They were very accommodating to my sister's food allergies as well! Wonderful food! We had a table of 6, and 3 agreed that the shrimp saag was the best they'd ever had. we also loved the chicken korma, lamb tikka masala and butter chicken. Unfortunately the service was lacking, however, with just 1 woman handling everything in the front of the house, and she was often in the back for several minutes at a time, so may have been helping in the kitchen, too. Based on the reviews, I noticed Himalayan Sherpa Cuisine is a very popular restaurant in Carlsbad Village where you can enjoy Indian, Nepali, and Tibetan delights. I tried it recently and had an opportunity to savor the authentic flavors. Overall, I had a good experience. The Mango Lassi was excellent...refreshing and creamy with just the right amount of sweetness. I ordered the Vegetable Pakora to try something new and it was deliciously crispy. For my Palak Paneer, the sauce was seasoned perfectly with a velvety consistency along with spices and just the right amount of minced spinach with yummy homemade cheese cubes. It's very casual...the atmosphere cozy with the intimate lighting. The service was friendly from the one and only server and menu options reasonably priced in my opinion. Plenty of street parking space close to the restaurant. This place was not busy around 5:30pm and we were seated immediately. The ambiance was pleasant and a great representation of Nepal and Tibetan culture. We kicked off our evening with Chai and it was excellent. We later ordered Salad, curries, and naan. The lamb saag was delicious and creamy. We ordered spice level 7 on Karahi chicken and the heat didn't let us down. The butter chicken was OK. Overall the meat was tender and well cooked. Been here twice now with my wife. The first time we ordered veggie samosas which was excellent, aloo gobi which was good, a sizzling shrimp dish which was so-so, and garlic naan. This time we ordered samosas again, lamb tikka masala which was super delicious, veggie korma which was so-so, garlic cilantro naan which was good, and pickles which tasted like Chinese medicine, which we didn't like. First time here and most likely my last. We came around 6:30pm as a party of two and were seated pretty quickly. However, it looked like there was only one server working, and she continued seating more parties even though it already seemed overwhelming for just one person. It took about 20 minutes for our order to be taken. We also noticed several tables who had arrived before us still waiting on their food, and the atmosphere started to feel tense as some guests looked frustrated and close to leaving. I completely understand being short-staffed, that happens.. but there were no apologies or updates about delays until about 45 minutes later when it became clear people were upset. The server eventually came up to me after my boyfriend stepped out to grab something from the car, possibly thinking we were about to leave, and apologized. It would have made a big difference if we had been told upfront that the kitchen was backed up before we placed our order. We would've been much more understanding instead of waiting a long time without any communication. The food itself was okay, but unfortunately the lack of service and communication really impacted the overall experience. read more

One of the best lunch specials around. I adore aromatic Indian food and occasionally wake up craving it. This was one of those days. I stopped in for lunch and took advantage of their weekday specials which start at $11.99 and run Mon-Fri (excluding holidays) from 11am-2:30pm. You get to choose two curries, served with lentil soup, rice, and naan. Such a great deal! The saag aloo had a deep, earthy flavor and was wonderfully savory. I loved the warm spices and the potatoes were perfectly tender. The chicken tikka masala leaned slightly sweet but still great, very creamy with clean cuts of chicken. Spice levels here are very mild so don't be shy. They offer a scale from 1-10 and at my 3 I needed more heat. Next time I'm going for 5. The rice and buttery naan were delightful and I especially appreciated how saucy everything was and the curry to rice ratio. Service was friendly and attentive. I loved the natural light pouring in through all the windows, making it perfect for people watching. The ambiance was warm and welcoming with colorful peace flags fluttering overhead. Truely amazing food, my experience here was 10/10. Customer service was perfection, got greeted right upon coming inside, sat us down and immediately had water brought to us. The waiter checked up on us, but not too much and made nice conversation and even complimented our piercings! I hate to leave negative reviews, but I was very disappointed with this restaurant. We chose to give it a try because it had a 4.7 review and the pictures of the food looked great. The butter chicken was not aromatic and did not taste like butter chicken, lacking in that great curried flavor. As you can see the chicken was very uniform in size and shape, similar to frozen chicken strips with a tough, fibrous texture. Most Indian restaurants have tender chicken that is easily shredded and clearly off the bone. The papad seemed stale. The kheer was thick and chunky and was not creamy and sweet as traditional kheer. I realize that everyone has uniques tastes and preferences but this was not the traditional Indian take out we expected. :( However, the service was great, fast and the associates were very friendly! read more

While working in the field I had to take a break. This place was smack dab in front of me and I had to give it a try. Looks like a family-owned / operated restaurant and all the awesome quaint-ness of families interacting with each other, too. Such great energy. The food is amazing! I ate everything aside a little rice. It's ALL in my belly. The Saag is chicken tikka masala + creamed spinach with coconut milk. I'm not 100% on the ingredients but thats how it tasted to me. Soooo good! The Garlic Naan is like fries with your burger. Get it! The Himalayan soup, though it came first deserves to be discussed. Let's rate this place: Ambiance: 1/5 - This place is straight out of 1978, both inside and out. Service: 1/5 - one person is doing everything: cashier, server, busboy, and if we're really unlucky, he's cleaning the toilets too. He never showed up once during the meal, had to be called from across the restaurant every time we wanted something, and completely did not earn the gratuity he got. Food: 2/5 overall, let's break it down: Naan: 3/5 - it was good not great. Not sure if it was pre-packaged and reheated or if it was truly fresh dough put in the clay tandoor. Seemed like the former. Palak Paneer: 2/5 - I asked very VERY hot and what I got was baby food. Also, it was sweet. Why did they add sugar to this dish? Would have been better if it was spicy as requested and not sweet. Also very oily, much more so than how other Indian restaurants make it. Chicken Tikka Masala: 2/5 - the chicken was previously cooked and was dry, hard, tasted very not fresh, and was inedible. All we ate was the sauce from this dish. Once again, it was very sweet. What's their obsession with putting sugar in Indian dishes? If they had used fresh, soft chicken and thrown the sugar jar away, this would have been a good dish. The sauce was otherwise very good. Chili Paneer: 2/5 - the sauce was uninspired and very, very little in quantity. The dish was barely fried (seemed heated but not pan fried, as this dish should always be), and in general had very little taste. We order this all the time in other Indian places, and this was easily the worst we've had. Rice: 0/5 - to call this rice is an insult to rice. Prisoners wouldn't eat it. No oil, no flavor, no salt, no nothing. I know the problem: North County has very few Indians, and so people who don't know good Indian food are rating this place. I'm not Indian, but I've been there many times, and I know what good Indian food tastes like in California. This place isn't it. Not going back. read more

I was craving some Indian food with my husband because we can never decide on dinner together. I looked up any good Indian/Himalayan restaurants around Carlsbad & I was happy to run into this one based on reviews. Parking can be kind of limited, so plan accordingly. We got lucky and we were able to find one right next to the entrance of the restaurant because we came on a weekday evening. Once entering, it was quiet. No one was in there except us but the interior and decor was beautiful. Very true and rich to their culture and also very clean. We were welcomed, seated, and serviced right away. We decided to go with a Chicken Tikka Masala to share, garlic naan, vegetable samosas, and a Mango Lassi. We waited a while to have our order be put in but they seemed to be busy arranging a catering order, which was okay. The food took a while to come out as well, also okay even though I was so hungry. I was glad at this point that the vegetable samosas came out quickly and they were delicious as always. The sauces were good! Slightly disappointed in the portions as the curry arrived. The curry was served on a beautiful silver tin bowl container but it was extremely small compared to most Indian restaurants I've been to. Luckily we had so much extra sides that we were feeling satisfied by the end of it. It was our first time trying the mango lassi & it was thick and creamy, also very rich in flavor. I'd say for the price, it was worth it surprisingly. It was much cheaper compared to most places and we had a dinner for only about $35. Dishes we ordered were lamb biryani, chicken korma and mushroom tikka masala. The tikka masala was on the sweeter side and a bit too similar to the korma. While the portion of the chicken was decent, the paucity of slices of mushrooms was drowned in the curry. We ordered 3-4 spice level and wasn't spicy at all.
