Descent Indian food. Must try non-veg curries. Biriyani was not authentic but good. Keema matar was delicious.

Of all places in chicago, we wandered into this little place during the coldest week in history.. and we couldn't be happier we did! This gem is nothing fancy, but when you order the momo soup, you will be pleasantly amazed. Imagine a dumpling flavored with Himalayan spices, and placed in a broth that is indian flavored, just spicy enough, and perfectly complimented the momo. This soup was so delicious that we craved it the entire time we were in chicago, amd made it back a second time! We have been looking, but there is no place for momo soup in Florida.. we wish they would open one, because we would certainly frequent it if so! We were visiting Chicago and wanted a quick meal ,had a craving for comfort food ( Indian) , came across the restaurant in yelp. My wife and I ordered a 'plate' each . She had the palak paneer and I had the butter chicken . We did a take out . The interaction during the ordering process was great . The packaging of the food was neat and hygienic. Himalayan restaurant recently opened this downtown location and was I excited. I am always downtown when i visit Chitown and i visit their Niles location. This last weekend, I went to see Bruno Mars and found they have new downtown location. Saved me some Lyft money instead of going to Niles. Well, where do i start. I was there for Momo. They have the best in Chicago. Nepali style steamed, soup and fried. Love it all. Perfectly shaped and packed with amazing flavors. Staffs are super friendly. Delicious food and friendly staff! I got the lamb saag (spinach) curry with the naan basket (regular, garlic, and onion naan). You can choose from mild, medium and hot spicyness levels for the curry, and while I asked for hot it was medium at most. Not sure if this was a mistake or if they play it safe here, but they happily brought a side of their house made chili paste so that we could spice it to taste. Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend this restaurant, especially if you're not familiar with Indian curry. read more

This is the absolute worst Indian food I have ever had! Which is,really sad. We need a decent Indian place in The Loop. The Samosa was flayorless well, there,was a taste of not too fresh oil. But, when one discusses samosas that isn't the flavor one thinks of. I have never, previously not finished one. Ever. The chicken dishes were flavorless. It's so unfortunate that I'm having to write this review because our first experience at this restaurant was quite positive. About a month ago, we got their family meal for four off of Caviar, and it was delicious. Unfortunately, tonight I ordered food from UberEats and scheduled it for 6:45-7:15 pm (note: on UberEats, it is noted that this restaurant uses their own delivery drivers and not Uber drivers). At 7:20 pm, I called the restaurant because there was no update on my food. The lady I spoke to said it was done, but their delivery driver wasn't there. I asked for an ETA and she let me know that they would call when the driver got to the restaurant so I would know when to expect the food. At 7:45 pm, called the restaurant again (at least 4x) and no one picked up. For the next 15 minutes, called the restaurant again (multiple times) with no answer. Honestly, I was hungry and just wanted to know if I could just go pick up the food myself, or if I should maybe make my own food? I decided food probably was never going to show, so I cooked for myself and tried to cancel the order on UberEats (which was made impossible by UberEats inability to connect me to a "specialist"). After I ate my own home-cooked food (at 8:50 pm), I decided why not call the restaurant again just to check in and see. The same lady picks up (finally) and lets me know that actually, the food was delivered and should be in my lobby. Why wasn't I called as promised? I go down to the lobby half expecting the food to not really be there. It is though, and as soon as I return up to my apartment, my UberEats app notifies me that the order was marked as delivered...1.5 hrs after the expected delivery time. Normally, I am forgiving with restaurants when working through apps like Doordash or UberEats because I understand that using the middle man can in itself cause problems (it's happened to me before). But this was an in-house delivery. Plus, the fact that my calls were ignored between 7:45 and 8:50 pm and were only picked up after the food finally showed up really takes the cake. Now, after having eaten my dinner, I have a bag of cold food sitting in front of me. read more

Already my new favorite Indian place. So hard to find good Indian food that isn't just heaps of food coloring and butter! We got the lunch special, a lot of food for 9 bucks! The chicken curry is home style, which means it will remind you of stuff you've eaten back home. The butter chicken is okay, but better than the stuff available downtown so #win! I also tried the chicken biryani and it was pretty good. Only thing that I'd recommend passing on, is the paneer makhani. They didn't have the desserts on the menu, so we skipped. I tried this place through a restaurant meal service that I'm subscribed to. I was a bit skeptical at first since I don't eat Indian food often and wasn't sure if I would like it but I definitely made the right choice coming here The chicken tikka and palak panner was filled with so many flavors and spices. It tasted like an authentic homemade meal. The chicken tikka was great with the rice and chickpeas. The spinach salad was pretty decent, too! This meal would be nice for a crisp fall day when you want to warm up with something hot. I just wish it wasn't located in the South Loop, I'd frequent this place more often if it was closer! This place is disgusting. It's funny how a friend and I, having a desire to try new foods because that's what we do, can experience blatant racism from a restaurant in a matter of SECONDS. Not even 5 minutes into us sitting down, we are ignored and given dirty plastic cups and plates meanwhile people who came in after us are seated, given completely different dishes and glassware and even greeted with a smile. Maybe they ran out of glasses huh? But the fact that I looked around and saw EVERYONE in that restaurant being treated with a smile and COMPLETELY DIFFERENT utensils and service from us, I knew something was up. The Momo's are the bomb. The sauce they serve with those is excellent. We tried the vegetable samosas and they were pretty good, not too greasy, a little heat, very good sized samosas and a nice curry flavor to them. The naan was also very good, we only tried the plain naan. We shared a Chicken Tikka Masala dish and it was pretty good although the large chunks of chicken we're a bit on the dry side, which is surprising and a first for me. Typically, in these dishes, the chicken would be more sift, melt in your mouth, savory, and easily cut with fork. Not this white meat chicken. I wondered if they cooked all their chicken on a grill then parce it out to different dishes. It might explain how they could get their chicken to be so dry. Other than that, I would like to go back and try a few other dishes along with some other Momo's. Hint: you could make a whole meal out of those, easily. read more

Utterly disappointed. I had been looking forward to coming here for a while but it was not worth the trip. The restaurant itself is kind of dirty, not very appetizing. I do know a thing or two about Nepali food since I am from Nepal, and I really did want to like this place. But it was lacking in so many areas. We got the vegetable pakoras, chili momo and soup momo. The pakoras were super dry and lacking flavor. The two different styles of momo's were almost identical in taste, except one had soup and the other was stir fry. So if you're unsure which one you want to try, don't worry, they pretty much taste the same. The service was ok, not very welcoming. Beware of a lot of families with young children may be dining. The entire dinner we sat next to a wailing child. Of course that's out of the restaurants control but if you're looking for an intimate or relaxing dinner, this is not your place. read more

I've been disappointed baby the tandoori chicken -- it was extremely dry and did not taste particularly great. The service is OK, although it took a long time to be served and to get the check. Yum and affordable. A Nepalese friend of mine recommended this place for authentic Nepalese dishes and she was so right! For two people, we got the following: - vegetable mimosas - Insanely good! The green sauce was incredible. Save some of that, if you order chicken tikka (see below). - gralic naan - Great texture, not super garlicky. - chili chicken momos - At first bite, I was like what's the big deal, it's just a giant dumpling. Then as I finished my first one, I fell in love. There were rich layers of spices and flavors. Juicy inside and perfect skin on the outside. - chicken tikka - This was soooo dry. Kind of edible if you eat it with the sauce from the mimosas (or other sauce), but that defeats the purpose of getting a dry, grilled dish. Would not recommend. Most of the food on this menu is Indian so I went for the Himalaya page. Underwhelmed by the momo dumplings but the grilled chicken app was extremely tasty. Beware that spicy really means spicy here. Can't believe this is across from a college and yet there was no lunch menu-- as with everything else in the Chicago loop it's an extremely expensive restaurant. We had Chicken Tikka Masala and Tandoori Chicken and it was the most bland I have ever had. The meat in the lamb samosas tasted old. Also the place is fairly small and it seemed like the waitress had a hard time managing the small crowd of people dining. We waited very long time to order and to get the items we ordered. Himalayan Restaurant is by far my favorite restaurant for take out/delivery- period. I order from here almost every week for years- it's my guilty pleasure. The food is truly amazing. The curry is consistent, creamy, spicy - everything you would want in a good curry. Their packaging is secure and clean. The delivery is reliable, timely and friendly. Their portions are great. Naan and raita always on point. My go to order includes -the Vegetarian Momos (try the Momo Soup or Chilli Momo versions if you like spice) -Paneer Makhani -Vegetable Samosas And my husband loves the lamb biryani and lamb saag. But really, you can't go wrong with anything from here. Guests from out of town have been crazy about the butter chicken and wanted to order it twice in their stay! Fantastic for take out!!! This is really the only restaurant I like doing take out with. Everything is delicious, hot, and packaged very well. I've had the lamb samosas, lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka, dumplings, naan, and one of the paneer dishes. Honestly all have been amazing and can't say one bad thing about the food. I usually do medium heat but you can decrease to mild or make it extra hot if you like it spicy!!! Warning, the vindaloo is spicy even at medium heat so be careful. My husband and I typically order several dishes and then have left overs which taste just as good the next day, highly recommend for take out! :) read more
