Some of the best Nepali/Indian food we've had! As a group of 5, we split the Family Meal Deal and added an extra bread basket. The onion naan was a surprise hit, we were delighted to learn we love it since we usually order garlic! We also ordered some Steamed Chicken Momos which were cooked perfectly and super juicy inside! We all had different favorites and none of the items went unnoticed. Even the sauces for the Cocktail Samosas and for the momos were flavorful! The staff were attentive, quick, and helpful. We were seated immediately, ordered within minutes, and were able to split our bill equally 5 ways with ease! Would recommend again for fast, casual dinner with no reservation needed.
Chicago, IL - My boss is a vegetarian so needed to find a great place close to our conference for a good meal. This un-fancy restaurant fit the bill perfectly. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted by the scent of delicious food and our very kind and efficient waitress. She immediately brought a flask of cold water and the menus. So many great choices! I went with the palak paneer. It came out hot and fresh and with a mild spice perfect for my non-spicy loving taste buds. Note that you can request your level of spicy-ness. The rice was also fresh and steamy. We noted the restaurant was quite busy so we were glad to get a comfortable table with a bench near the wall. I would definitely return when in the area.
We stopped in for lunch recently, as we'd both had the restaurant bookmarked for quite awhile. Well worth the visit, and a new place on the regular lunch rotation. The staff was friendly, polite and helpful, and the place, while humble, is clean and agreeably comfortable. We decided to share some momos, as we both really like them, so ordered the chicken chili. They arrived quickly to the table and were delicious; smaller than others I've had at other restaurants, but packed with filling and delightfully spicy, with bell peppers and onions tossed in the tangy sauce. Those were filling enough that we chose to share an entree, and opted for the vegetable jalfrezi. This dish was very tasty, with a noticeable heat level (they do ask, so it's up to you), and a mix of fresh and good quality frozen vegetables. Overall, very good North Indian/Nepalese food in an inviting space. I'll return for more.
This restaurant was located just a few blocks from our hotel in Chicago's South Loop. It's a family style place that serves Indian and Nepalese food. Upon entering, we saw many Indians customers eating. Always a good sign. This place is very casual. We had the chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloon, Chana masala, and the bread basket. It comes with rice. Everything was amazingly delicious. Be careful about the spice level, as this place is authentic. Level 1 is very very spicy. They adjust the level of spiciness to your personal preference. Overall, I highly recommend this place when you're in Downtown Chicago. Nothing fancy, just great authentic home style cooking.
Portions were big enough for leftovers and everything was so tasty! Had mild & medium both you could tell the difference, I bet the 2 hotter ones would be great for spice lovers. Chill spot with music, quick nice service. Easy to split the check!
We had the Non-Vegetarian Meal For Two , Served with Half Tandori Chicken, Two Entrees, One Rice, and One Butter Naan we chose the tiki masala and chicken Makani. We both loved the food. My husband said it his new favorite restaurant. Ambience is it much but it did appear to be clean. The server was wonderful. I didn't catch your name.
Ordered for the first time, got mutton momo and vegetable pakora. Both are fantastic. I will definitely go back to get the same things and will not hesitate to try others on the menu as well.
What started a routine Uber Eats pickup from work soon turned... FOR THE BEST. As a white boy (with a lil habanero), it's procedure tht I went for the slightly spicy Tikki Marsala. "Is even that too spicy?" I wondered. The fellas in there were chill as f**k which was tight. When I tell you this spicy tikki marsala tasted like it was cooked by the blessed Vishnu himself, flown on the wings of a Bengal tiger, and delivered right here to the South Loop, I f**king mean it. Just what I needed after a long day of interning!!! Great stuff.
Found this place to be a great value! I saw it was rated as one of the best places close to the auditorium theatre for dinner. My only regret is that my stomach wasn't bigger. Portions are huge. Highly recommend the chicken Tikka and Naan. Next time I'll go back with a bigger group so we can try more things. My husband appreciated the spiciness of the vindaloo. No reservations needed and is byob. Great for a pre-theatre bite. The staff is great and the food is delicious!
It's a block off Michigan ave. It's not a chain so it's gets my vote in spite of being in between Harold's Fried Chicken and Lao Szechuan. Our server AC welcoming smile is what drew us in. The menu looks suspiciously Indian. In retrospect a good portion of the Himalayan MT is in India. Our one dish with our side of Nan was more than enough for my wife and I. We got the Himalayan mixed grill of shrimps, 2 kinds of chicken, 2 kinds of sausage in a bed of onions served in a sizzling plate that tantalizes your sense of smell, sight and sound. None of them tasted the same and all were really tasty. Some chicken was a touch dry - I'm nitpicking.
I was in the area, and I've been meaning to check out Himalayan Restaurant. Looking online, I saw they had a lunch special including two entrees, dessert, rice, and naan. When I entered, the restaurant was very clean and about a third full- it's a small storefront with cute art on the walls. I sat down and was immediately helped, with a lunch special menu placed on my table. I noticed that at the restaurant, rather than a dessert, the lunch special was served with samosas- which I didn't mind. The server brought the entire pitcher of water to my table, which was nice, and my food quickly arrived; chana masala and chicken tikka masala. It was served on a cute metal platter. To start with the good- the rice was delicious, hot, and fresh, the naan was also very fresh and flavorful, and the samosas were flakey and nicely spiced. The chana masala was also very flavorful, and nothing was too spicy- I'm certain one could ask for some spice, I have a low tolerance and didn't mind. Unfortunately, while it was tender, the chicken tikka masala had an odd, greasy flavor, and only three chunks of chicken. I didn't love it- and in the future, I'd try a different chicken dish or order veggie. For 12.99, I wish they had a larger selection of meat dishes for the lunch special, as I would've loved a lamb or fish curry. While the naan was tasty, it had a cheap butter flavor which gave it an off putting smell and taste. Ultimately, this was a clean restaurant with a decently priced lunch special, and the vegetarian options were delicious. The service was quick and efficient, and I'd absolutely recommend it if you're in the loop.
Five words: come here for Indian food. Seriously, you won't regret it, especially if you're already in the south loop or nearby the loop. That's exactly the reason we stopped by one Saturday afternoon after visiting the Chicago Art Institute. It was just a short walk from the museum and the reviews were promising. We were able to be seated right away (no-frills but clean) and there were a number of classic options plus more authentic options on the menu. We ordered the samosas, chicken makhani, and chili shrimp plus two mango lassi. My friend has a severe tree nut allergy and we realized the chicken makhani may have nuts and when we checked with the server he kindly told us not to worry and pointed us to options without tree nuts. We replaced the chicken makhani with chicken chili masala, which reinforces that there are truly many dishes to accommodate all diets and allergies at Himalayan. All of our food came in large portions and was shareable - these three dishes were even a little too much food for us, but all of the food was delicious and reasonably priced! We will certainly be back!

Ordered takeout and got samosas, 3 entrees, and sides of rice and naan. The chicken makhani was wonderful--I might say it's the best I've ever had. The chicken was so tender, and the spices were super fragrant. The paneer was good, too, a nice level of creaminess. I wasn't the biggest fan of the lentil dish, but that may just be personal preference. read more

Cute casual hole-in-the-wall Indian spot that's BYOB! Defs a unique combination with decent prices for the area considering the good portions. The food was really good here, and comparable to other great Indian spots. The naan is soo fluffy and soft! We got the mutter paneer at a 4 spice level and it was pretty spicy!! Recommend probably a 3 or lower unless you can really handle your spice. read more

The name and menu descriptions are likely a barrier to entry for some. They're missing out. All you need to know is- this place has meat, vegetables, rice, and appetizers suitable for all the -vores, the -ians, and the GF crowd. One meal is enough for two, unless you want leftovers. This restaurant on a weekday evening at 9pm was packed! Given its large seating area and general popularity I expected them to be used to this traffic, but seemed like I was wrong. Since no one seemed to be seating the customers, i had ordered the food at the counter with the intention to eating in. 30 minutes later, the food still hadn't come so I wanted to make sure there wasn't any mistake in the kitchen so I went up to the counter to clarify and was very rudely told that they were very busy and the wait was now 45 mins to an hour. No semblance of an apology. Would have been nice to know beforehand too. Around 50 minutes after ordering, my food finally arrives but in a brown take away bag even though I've been sitting at a table for the last almost hour. It was a pretty terrible experience to start off the meal. I had ordered the lamb curry with a side of garlic naan and mango lassi. The food itself was quite delicious! The lassi was more tart than the norm which I liked. The curry was portioned generously with up to 8-10 pieces of soft stewed and well spiced lamb in it. I requested mild spice but there was enough to summon the phlegm monster that usually accompany moderately spiced food for me. The garlic naan was crispy and chewy on the edges and paired well with the curry. The food itself would have warranted a 4-5 rating, but the service is holding back the kitchen and can use improvement. read more
Have not tried a dish here that I didn't like. The options are all fantastic and they do them all well. Chana masala, palak paneer, and Tikka masala are our favorites. The garlic naan is the best. Ordering is always easy and your food is ready quick. I wish the samosas were a little larger, more filling and less breading but they are still good. Portion sizes could be larger for the price. read more

Ordered through ubereats for delivery and order made correctly and arrived within 40 min. The naan was fresh and soft. Mattar paneer made spicy as per request but could've had more paneer. The samosa and onion pakora were great as well along with the side chutneys. read more

I'm always more critical of Indian restaurants being of Indian descent but the food was great! The seating wasn't ideal but I would definitely order out one of their meals! The chicken meal is very reasonably priced and delicious. My only qualm was their inflexibility to substitute regular naan for garlic naan, without any thought. Service could be better but seems like it'd be a great takeout place. read more

I was really hoping to love this place but I wasn't that impressed with the food. The atmosphere inside is clean and bright. My two friends and I came on a weekday evening, so the restaurant was pretty quiet. I tried the vegetable pakora, garlic naan, lamb madras, and a bite of a fish curry my friend ordered. The vegetable pakora and garlic naan were both 10/10's for sure. The batter on the pakora was not overly heavy or greasy. Almost everything about the lamb madras was boring. The sauce used in the lamb madras lacked enough spices and salt. The only positive about this dish was the fact that the lamb meat was tender. The fish curry that I tried also had similar problems (lack of spices and salt). The staff was nice and did a good job going over the menu with us, but I feel like I would only possibly come back for appetizers. For a full dinner of Himalayan/Nepalese food in the south loop, I would just head to Nepal House on Michigan Ave instead. read more
Found this place on yelp. Kind of feels like a hole in the wall when you walk in, but it was very popular so I guess a lot of people know about it. Went on a Sunday around lunch time and all the tables were consistently full. But they moved quickly and efficiently. We were seated after only 5-10min. Food was really good and fairly priced! Between 4 people, we split the following: - steamed momo ($8.95): minced chicken dumplings - samosa ($5.95): comes with 2 - Himalayan special biryani ($14.95): biryani with lamb, shrimp, chicken - lamb curry ($14.95) - 2 orders of garlic naan ($2.95 each) - 2 mango lassis ($3.95 each) I liked everything we tried! read more
Surprisingly exceeded my expectations. The service was great and the food came out incredibly fast. The food was absolutely amazing. And I don't say that lightly. Indian food is a hit or miss, usually being a miss. The food tasted home made with all the right spices and levels of hotness. We ordered the tikka massala, garlic Nan, veg simosas and lamb vindaloo. We've ordered from Himalayan Restaurant a couple times now for pick up. The food is good and portions are reasonable, but there's something different/off about the spices compared to other Indian restaurants, and their food is much less spicy than other Indian restaurants. If you like spicy food, I would definitely recommend to order a spicier level than you're used to ordering because their food just isn't all that spicy unless you really ask them to increase the spice. read more

A good restaurant just outside of Grant Park. We were very hungry after Lollapalooza and this was a good find (Thanks to Yelp, of course) We were confused if it were Indian, but yes it is. It is Indian with a bit of Nepalese flavor in it. Lunch specials seem to be cheaper, but other than that be prepared to spend around 20$ for a good meal. I order Chicken Makhani and it was spicy (because I wanted it that way). It was a bright red curry and I loved it. It came with a bowl of basmati rice. Also ordered a Garlic Naan, and it was soft and smooth. Well made Indian bread and a good combo with Chicken Makhani. My friend ordered Chicken Briyani and I hada bit of it and it was a close 5 star as well. We went there by 9:50 pm, just 10 minutes before closing time and the people over there were friendly and accommodating and they were ok with us dining over there. From its casual exterior, and unique café style interior, you'd assume that there is nothing too special here. But as soon as you taste the food, you realize how wrong you are. The Chicken Biryani, Garlic Naan, and Chicken Tikka Masala over white rice was the perfect meal for two. The spice was right, and the meat was cook well beyond expectations. One thing I'd comment on is the availability of the waiters. The environment is very lax which may attribute to the staff especially late night. read more

I've passed this place many a time on my way with my daughter to the Fine Arts Building. Unassuming from the outside, but pass through the door and the wonders of deliciousness begin. The place was buzzing with activity on an early Wednesday evening, and I was lucky to grab one of the last available tables before the small wait began. The waitress was quick to stop by and grab my order, and I'm thankful to her for talking me down from my overly eager request for "extra spicy" chicken vindaloo to a more reasonable (and ultimately delicious) "hot". The vindaloo was one of the best I've had, and the naan was warm, fluffy and buttery. Based on that one tasty experience I would definitely come back and I recommend stopping in here. I also noticed quite a few takeout orders coming in, so it was pretty obvious a popular place. read more

Yum!! This place is such a hole in the wall but is so good. The spices are so flavorful and the curry tikka masala is especially good. I wish it had more than just the lamb, like some onions or veggies, but we also got the aloo Gobi so we got enough veggies. Himalayan is really a good addition to South Loop. I have been going here for quite sometime so I think it's time to give them a review. The price and the portion are definitely worth it. And the taste is super good. You can definitely taste the spices. My favorite is the momo (a fancy way to say dumpling!). At first, I only tried the regular momo, but when I was sick, decided to get the momo soup. And OMG, it was perfect to fight my stuffy nose. Last week, I got their fish curry. Again, they didn't disappoint me at all. It was sooooo good. Delivery is faster than the grubhub estimate time so it's a plus. I order for delivery today 24th oct 17 at about 7:15pm and the delivery time was told to be about 35 mins. I am posting this at 8:45 and called the restaurant and they said they are checking. Don't go for delivery, what is learned?
