North central Wichita hasn't had anything resembling Indian food since Maharaja closed on N. Broadway ~17 years ago, so I was excited to see Himalayan Sherpa open up in the old DeFazio's spot at 27th and Amidon. I took my mom, sister and grandma for a girls' lunch to see what all they had to offer, and it was such a fun, delicious experience. We ordered our known favorites to share, just to set the baseline: veggie samosas, chicken momos (essentially dumplings/gyoza), saag paneer, paneer masala, coconut curry and garlic naan. My grandma also got a bowl of Mulligatawny soup, which we didn't try but she seemed very happy with. The portions were large enough for at least 1-2 more meals and each entree (except the soup) came with a 1cup bowl of basmati rice. The curries were rich and seasoned to a slightly different regional taste than our east side Indian places imo, so you can look forward to a fresh take on a fairly familiar menu. The chicken in the coconut curry was spiced and tender and the paneer (tofu-like cheese cubes) was perfectly firm. All spice levels are customizable, so people who love mild and spicy will find something to enjoy. I usually get medium elsewhere and found their medium suited my taste as well. As for the appetizers, the garlic naan was lightly crisp (yay!), buttery and not too garlicky. The momo filling was seasoned with bright, refreshing herbs and spices, and the samosas were well-filled with potatoes and peas and the pastry crust was not claggy. Our kind server, a Colorado transplant, was very knowledgeable and gladly answered any questions we had about fillings and spices we were curious about. Our meals were timed well and he was prompt with everything we needed. The atmosphere was clean, bright and updated, taking advantage of natural light from new, big windows. The picnic-style red checked vinyl tablecloths felt a little odd with the type of food being served and the otherwise modern interior decor, but that's forgivable. They had soft instrumental Himalayan(?) music playing in the background and no TVs, so we could hold a conversation. Tables and booths are both available. Prices are on par with most local restaurants, with our dishes being about $15 a piece. We spent about $88 total, including the naan and appetizers. Sadly, I didn't really get to the Himalayan menu, but all the more to look forward to next time we come! A new option for Himalayan and Indian cuisine for the West side. If you're using GPS it won't be visible from the road. It's a small shopping center with a gas station up front FYI. When I walked inside I was greeted immediately and was seated promptly. I just learned this was their third day opening. Menu has many options including vegetarian options. No alcohol. Couple of speciality drink options. I ordered the Korma Chicken and Garlic naan. Unfortunately I was told the momos were not available at the time I tried to order them. He did later tell me they were making more and I could order. I asked if he could give me a half order but denied my request. Would be nice to be able to get a half order while trying other things. Full order is 10 FYI. Prices are typical of our current climate. So expect $13-17 a dish. I waited about 15-20 minutes before the food came out. Overall the korma is legit. The chicken was plentiful. You could probably share it with another person and be both filled up. The Naan is super thin. Garlic was spot on. Wish it was a little more crispier. Rice is plentiful but my only criticism is the rice was a little too stuck together and hard to break up with a fork. I felt the service was great. I was checked on by two people making sure I had everything I wanted. I think this is a great option for west siders since most options are East or South side of town. read more

As East Wichitans, we don't always make the trek out west, but hearing about the new Himalayan Sherpa Indian & Nepali Cuisine had us making the drive--and it was absolutely worth it. We left full, impressed, and with enough leftovers for two more dinners! The Chicken Dhanyia (Hot) was the absolute star of the night. We've never had it before, but this coriander/cilantro-spiced curry was utterly fabulous.We had Chicken Chili Momo (Medium+), an ample portion of dumplings tossed with onions and green peppers. It struck the perfect sweet-and-spicy balance without being overwhelmingly hot. The Shrimp Stew (Medium-Plus) was delicious and very flavorful, though worth noting it's more of a light, savory broth than a thick, American-style stew. The Saag Paneer was solid and satisfying. We paired the meal with both the Onion Naan and Cheesy Garlic Naan, both of which were excellent. A Note on Spice....Since it was our first time, we played it a bit conservative with "Medium-+" (and "Hot" for the chicken). The spice levels were exactly as advertised, but the flavors are so well-balanced that we'll definitely venture even hotter next time! The restaurant was clean, but the service is what really blew us away. Our server was an absolute rockstar, flawlessly managing every single table in the room seemingly all at once without missing a beat. Despite being busy, they still took the time to chat with us, and we loved getting to share what we knew about Nepal and Nepali cuisine with them. In summary...Fantastic food, comfortable environment, and powerhouse service. Whether you live down the street or across town, Himalayan Sherpa is well worth the trip.
