FIVE STARS BECAUSE THE FOOD IS SOLID IN WICHITA! I have been visiting my family in Wichita for almost 20 years and I have never had good Indian food until I had the food from Astoria Biryani house. Who cares if the service was lackluster as some reviews mention or that the ambiance is underwhelming. After having the dosas, the samosas, and the other dishes that my cousin ordered, I can confidently say that the Indian food here is probably one of the best if not the best that I have had in Wichita. They warn you about the spice levels and actually do have proper chutneys and accoutrement that come with any and all of the dishes. The restaurant has a fast casual vibe; however, the service was nothing short of what you'd expect from a fine dining experience. The restaurant does a large amount of delivery business. Drivers arriving every couple of minutes the entire time we dined. The food was nothing short of amazing and delicious. The Samosas were flaky, crispy, hot and tasty. Indian food remains my favorite meal not only dining, but at home as well. The food was some of the best I've eaten. The Masala Dosa was perfection. Perfect amount of crisp, nice flavor. Food: Worth the poor service and lackluster ambiance. Everything was great and finally spiced well. This is the first restaurant in Kansas that was actually spicy when they offered levels of spice. They actually warned me away from getting extra spicy food because most regulars request mild (we ignored that and ordered spicy). All that to say it was mildly spicy. The food was flavorful and the portions were reasonable for the price. The star of the show was the Biryani which makes sense since that is their showstopper. Service: Meh. The waitress was nice but literally didn't check on us at all or refill our waters without us asking. Ambiance: Meh, legit it was not great. Amazing flavors, spot on spice levels, and enough food for some take home! Attentive and friendly service. Utilitarian tables and chairs - but it's all about the food! We (four of us) had the butter naan, all three sauces, tikka masala (lamb), saag paneer, butter masala (chicken), butter masala (lamb). And two types of lassi. After trying all of the dishes we agreed it was some of the best Indian food in Wichita or Washington State. read more

This is placed on Monday but came here on a Sunday afternoon and it was a packed out place! I ordered the Chicken Curry with Naan and the Mutton Biryani! The food was a lot and we could not eat it all! This place is more southern Indian in culinary tradition. The food arrived hot and delicious! The first bite was absolute perfect in every way! I really wanted to like Astoria Indian Grill because the people there seem genuinely nice and the food itself tastes good. But unfortunately their service has been consistently disappointing and it really takes away from the whole experience. The first time I ordered delivery from them, several of my items were missing. When I called, it felt like no one knew what to do and there wasn't any real effort to fix the situation or offer a solution. I decided to give them another try and placed a pickup order instead. But even then, after waiting for over an hour, my food still wasn't ready. It's frustrating because the food deserves better service behind it. The staff seem kind but it feels like they just aren't doing their best when it comes to managing orders or making things right when mistakes happen. I'd honestly love to keep supporting them but until their service improves it leaves a bitter taste and not the kind you want from a good Indian meal. read more

We were looking for dinner and decided to drive over and try Astoria. We hadn't looked at menu before hand which was extensive so I got a standard for me, the butter chicken. It was delicious, creamy and saucy and. medium heat was just spicy enough for me. My husband branched out and got a spicy chili chicken and peppers and loved it. I also tried it and wouldn't have been able to eat a whole meal of the hot but really enjoyed the flavor. I also got a chai and we split the butter roti. Service was fast, we were sat immediately and food came out quickly. We dined in but they appeared to be doing a very brisk business of takeaway as well. Stopped here for lunch and I could already tell by the aroma in the parking lot that it was going to be good. Ordered for myself and staff was very polite. Service was great overall. Restaurant was very clean and tidy. The food came out and the quality was amazing. I just moved here from Los Angeles area where we have lots of Indian food available and this was probably the best meal I've had in Wichita thus far. I actually called my wife who was looking at houses with the kids to join me and ordered more food. The tikka kabobs were layered with smoky flavor and some citrus some spice. I had heard about Astoria Biryani House opening in the old Uno Mas space, and happened to be in the area so I stopped in. The interior has been updated and looks nice. They basically walled off the kitchen area and put some cool modern touches around the rest of the place. One thing they need to do is have a menu somewhere close by the door, or a large menu board hanging up. All they had was (nice) color menus on the counter, but there were several people in line in front of me and I couldn't see them. I ordered the Tikka Masala Chicken kababs, and the Chicken 65. I was thrilled to see 65, as I haven't seen it around Wichita anywhere. One of my only two complaints - it took about 20 minutes to get my order from when I placed it. I know, not ridiculous, but when you're just sitting there, it seems like an eternity. I know they're new, so I expect the turnaround time will speed up as they get used to the process. My other complaint, and not really their fault, I suppose, but the prices are a bit on the steep side. The two dishes I got were $31. That is with no rice or naan, just the protein and on a light bed of cabbage and onions. And $31 isn't really unreasonable these days, but the portions weren't that big. The real star though was the food. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The kababs had a nice char on them, were a brilliant orange color, and except for a couple of pieces, juicy and good. They serve a green cilantro sauce with them, and it was a perfect match. SO GOOD. The 65 was decent, cooked well, tasted fine, but the Tikka was the best. Enough to send me back again, for sure! Understanding this was the first weekend it was open, we had a great experience. There is a culture difference in customer service and they do a good job of addressing some of that here. We were welcomed and accommodated (busy but they made a table for us once there was room) and felt well taken care of. Food selection was great and taste was decent. Garlic naan was superb and always has to accompany a curry! We didn't get our biryani we ordered but they saw that was the case and we got it to go instead. One thing that was an inconvenience is that all our clothes, baby carrier...(and baby ) smelt like onions. Everything had to be washed including the baby carrier. The food was finominal! Tried it for the first time about three weeks ago and have since been back at least three more times. Each time, we've got the chicken butter masala and the paneer butter masala. We pair those with the delicious nann. Each time, we try something else with all of this and have yet to be disappointed. Food is very good but pricey. The best thing about Astoria IMO is that they offer dishes w Goat and Lamb. I arrived at 11:15 on a Tuesday and was the only one in the place. I was told that none of the three Goat Biryanis choices were available at the moment but the goat curries were ready. So I ordered Goat Tikka to go. It comes with basmati rice. About $18.50 after tax. No bread or raita, etc. I asked for very mild spice or 1 out of 5. I'm still stopping to wipe my nose every few bites as it is still spicy. I ordered a cup of chai while I waited for the food. It was delicious chai. Although I enjoyed this meal, I probably won't come back here often as I simply prefer an Indian Buffet for variety and value. We have a couple of decent buffets in this part of town. read more

Went here on a Saturday for lunch, around 2pm and unfortunately they were shutting down the kitchen 5 minutes after I got there and half the menu was closed so that was disappointing. I ended up getting a shrimp dish and was offered no spice and it came VERY spicy, but as I don't mind spicy it wasn't a big deal. Our appetizers were overcooked to the point we couldn't eat them, the main entree portions were extremely small and not very good. The curry was fair but we've eaten better. Oh My God.... This is it guys!! This is the Indian Cuisine Wichita has been waiting for. You can smell the spices 50 ft from the restaurant. Our first visit was us walking up to Wasabi East and we got a huge whiff of the restaurant and changed our mind and decided to try out this restaurant instead of sushi. There was a little bit of a wait BUT of course there was. This place was amazing the food would be worth a 1 hour wait. They were so nice, attentive, and efficient.
