Vegetarian review - the food for the most part was good tasting but mostly mild so the flavors were more distinct which is unlike other Indian restaurants. The presentation was great. We ordered tell vegetarian thalis with mixed veggie curry for 1 and okra curry for the other. While the veggie curry was good the Okra was not, the selection of tender okra is extremely important and a good cook would pay better attention to that, in this case that was a disappointment. Rest of the items were all mostly sweet and not too many savory items which is unlike some other places around here, for me that's a disappointment, should be better balanced. Last time I visited, the Himalayan was 10 years ago. The food was so delicious than that I made a promise that when I would come back, I would bring my family and friends. Exactly 10 years ago, but I made that promise and I finally made it to Windsor again coming into town for a long week vacation in the wine country. The food is just phenomenal as well as the service. FaceTime we did various plates, including thr paneer, the egg plant, the chicken curry. The benefit of coming to this restaurant is that it offers various gluten-free dishes. I was visiting Windsor and was looking up restaurants to eat and saw that this was very highly rated! I'm not too familiar with Himalayan and Nepalese food so I was excited to try it out! It was pretty busy for a weeknight dinner but we didn't have to wait for a party of 2. We sat inside and parking was easy as there is plenty of street parking. After we ordered we were even given a warm towel to wipe our hands on. We ordered mango lassi's, vegetable samosas, chicken korma curry with white rice and garlic naan, and we wanted to try something different that we don't usually see so we got the fried noodles of the Himalayas with shrimp. The mango lassi was amazing, the vegetable samosas came with tons of sauces. We read that they give our complimentary lentil soups but I think that's only for lunch so we didn't bother asking. We opted for the chicken korma curry because it was highly rated and it met its expectations! We got ours a little spicy too and it was filled with so much flavor and texture, you can def tell the different spices and ingredients compared to a regular masala or curry. It paired so well with the garlic naan. They serve momos there which are dumplings from Nepal but we opted for the stir fried noodles of the Himalayas with shrimp. When trying to explain how it tasted which was really good, it reminded me of a Mongolian bbq with special types of mixing! I would highly recommend. We were way too full for dessert but they had tea bags on the table too. The service was great and very friendly and we really enjoyed our meal here, I'd definitely come back! We decided on a late lunch, at this establishment. When we arrived we were greeted and seated immediately. Beer and wine only but the selections were solid. Lots of Sonoma county wines and a variety of local and international beers. The 3 of us opted for the lunch specials. They start with a soup, it had corn and maybe some potatoes, the broth had a mild curry flavor and it was really good. My dad had the grilled chicken, it came with rice a salad and a fried onion morsel. I tried a piece of his chicken and it was juicy and a nice hint of spice. He was happy with his dish but he used the sauce from my mom and me for his rice. My mom did a chicken in a green herb sauce with the rice and salad. She was very happy with her dish. She raves about it. I did the lamb aloo. The lamb chunks were tender unfortunately the dish didn't have a lot of flavor and the spice level was non existent. Next time I'm in town I would love to come back and try more offerings. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful, warm orange tones with a giant picture of a yak. What's not to love read more

I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. The food has incredible flavor and I was in disbelief with every dish we tried as to how good was. Two things that brought us to Himalayan. First, I am gluten free and the restaurant labels all their menu items that are gluten free. I really appreciate restaurants that do this. Secondly, we were eating vegetation for the month and Indian food is usually very accommodating. With the food be so amazing, I can't wait to return and try some of the meat dishes. Excellent! Was looking for a dinner place to settle down after hitting two wineries, and the Himalayan restaurant was highly recommended by multiple persons. Which Himalayan place, I asked? The Himalayan Restaurant, because that's literally what it's called! So off to Downtown Windsor, we went! We ordered the samosas, lamb shank and potato curry, naan, and rice. The naan was so fresh, and the lamb was so tender it was falling off the bone! They forgot to bring us the rice, but we were so stuffed by the end of it, we decided to forgo it altogether. My wife and I were in Windsor for a long weekend with my aunt and she had been to the Himalayan before and I am glad she made the recommendation. We sat outside on the beautiful patio, just after COVID was phasing out. I ordered an IPA and our server was super cool. My aunt got a red wine and she liked that as well. There is a pretty park right across the street. Windsor is a nice little town. I ordered the lamb tandoori, but they were out of lamb cubes for some reason, so I got the mixed tandoori with salmon, chicken and ribs. The ribs were fantastic and the salmon was pretty good, chicken was a tad dry, but with raita and mint chutney, dear Lord. those accouterments made everything 2 stars better. The raita is so refreshing. Get the raita and mint chutney - They are fabulous! We got some lentil soup, which I loved but my aunt thought it was too soupy. I really liked it. I thought it was super flavorful and nice. We got some goat curry too, spice level 2. It was spicy, I am glad we didn't get 3 because two was hot enough, but the flavor came through. Great tender goat and we had two types of naan, crushed lamb and a garlic and herb one, which were both AMAZING! Service was fantastic and great company. On New Year's Eve, my family was supposed to pick up food. There was a line a mile long out the door, and when we finally got our food, they forgot something in our order. However, when we came back, they were very hospitable and even gave us a free soup and a $75 gift certificate for next time we arrived. The food was great, and there are amazing people working here. We've been wanting to try this restaurant for a few months given all of the positive reviews. We finally ordered takeout and it was...good (I'll try again in hopes for that WOW experience). Ordering online through their website was easy and pick-up at the restaurant was easy too; Covid precautions are in place. The staff were all extremely warm and attentive. The food highlights: samosas (crispy and flavorful and the size of a fist! not greasy), Himalayan fried noodles with veggies (flavorful and a huge portion that could feed 3 or 4), Roti (did well to-go). We also tried the chicken tikka masala (the sauce was creamy and tasty but the chicken lacked a little flavor punch), the lentil soup (more broth and fewer lentils than expected; good but lacked a little 'wow'...or maybe salt...or maybe my American palate is too accustomed to salt!), and the garlic naan (this was warm and fresh but it steamed itself on our 10-min drive home - tip for anyone ordering naan to-go: a little reheat in the oven works wonders). Not all food translate well as to-go items, so we'll definitely give this small local business another try, especially when we're comfortable dining in person. They do currently offer outdoor dining with heaters and people were outside on this cool February evening enjoying themselves. read more

Ambiance is so nice. We sat on patio near the street. Was really pretty. Service was excellent, kind and professional. Food,,,so so sad to say it was meh. Starting with the chai it lacked depth very watery and was not spiced. Ordered the mixed barghi o start. Which are little veggies mixed with chickpea flour and fried served with three dipping sauces. Boring and tasted like they may have been refried or held in hot oven too long, lunch came and I had the veggie lunch special. The soup was watered down to a salty thin broth with a few dal. I tried three spoons and set it aside. Lunch plate came and the best parts were the papadam and brown rice and salad. The curry was boring. Husband had chicken tika masala,,,he said it was bla. Again we had a lovely time. So the bad was a few hours later we both felt queasy from way too much grease maybe. One such restaurant worth trying is Himalayan Restaurant. I get it. It's not the thing many American diners shout out as a first choice alongside pizza, wings, burgers etc. In fact, you may event think of salad bar before the thought of Himalayan cuisine comes to mind! Same here. So I'm happy to say that the food I tried was delicious, and I'll be back for more Himalayan food! The host was warm and welcoming, and the restaurant had several tables already in play for a later dinner hour. The dining room was nicely decorated, perfectly lit for dining, and appeared clean and neat. I ordered stir fried noddles. There are vegetarian and meat options, and I chose lamb. Also naan bread and a side of mango chutney. The meal started with a small complimentary cup of lentil soup. It was a nice touch and I was appreciate of the freebie. The soup was good, but the texture was super lentil heavy which is to say- very grainy. It was a bit difficult to get through as a result so I didn't finish it. Still a tasty cup of soup. The noodles were generously served. There was a nice mix of noodles, chunks of lamb, and veggies. This was easily enough for two meals, and was delicious. One caveat is that lamb can be fatty, and in this case the meat rendered out a ton of oil. Flavorful to be sure, but it made for a very "heavy" meal. The naan was wonderful. Very pillowy with a light crust all around. It was mildly garlicky and buttery. This was the star of the meal for sure! Service was professional and responsive. Would certainly go again! I love this place! Hadn't been here for a few years, and I think the ownership may have changed, but visited here recently, and was FLOORED by the food. I am a fan of Indian-style food, and haven't really found a local place that really hit the spot for a while. Himalayan brings it! We've been a few times in the last few months and it has delivered every time. The Service is friends and prompt. The food is rich, fresh, and well prepared. They nail the classics like Tikka Masala, Baighan Bharta, and their paneer is excellent! Another unique thing they offer are noodle-dishes - which we absolutely LOVED! We have also recently had the Tandoori Salmon - which was incredible! It has a nice crust, but was perfectly cooked - a nice flavorful crust from the Tandoori Oven, and deliciously moist. Perfect! While the food and service are one thing (or, a couple of very important things) the owner (I believe his name is Vishnu) is always super friendly, personable, and welcoming - which adds a personal touch that really helps elevate Himalayan. Go for the food, but enjoy the special touches and hospitality that they offer - and don't forget to finish your meal with a Chai - their's is outstanding! The food and the service were great! If I could give 4 1/2 I would do so. But I had to deduct at least half a point because the restaurant is quite small and they were doing a better business with take out orders than with in house customers. This would not have been an issue except that the take out customers were not waiting outside, but hovering over the area where we were seated. And at one point there was a mother with a sick two year old who was coughing right behind me throughout at least half our meal while they awaited the preparation of their take out food. The mother did not restrain this two year old at all, and indeed even allowed him to touch and play with the dishes and utensils that were already set on another table awaiting customers. I shuddered to consider what children may have been playing with our dishes prior to our arrival. I understand that the very gracious staff was trying to be welcoming to all customers, but I believe they are going to lose in house patrons if they do not make some rules about their take out customers waiting outside (or at the very least restraining children whose parents will not. I did ask the mother of the coughing two year old to stop his running back and forth behind my seat but she said she was waiting for her take out order and ignored my request. read more

It seems that every time I want to go here they are closed for their transition into dinner but thats understandable, at least you know your food will be fresh. Just make sure you check the times before you show up. The food was great, but both times I went the rice tasted a bit old, like it had been from the morning or possibly the day before. I mix it with the rest of the food so it wasnt a huge deal but just kind of a bummer.
