    Chai
    Sheila P.

Tried out this place for the first time after discovering it through Yelp. My friend and I immediately became intrigued by the menu and started off with a couple chai teas. We also ordered dosa, garlic naan, pani puri, samosa chaat, and chicken tikka masala. Everything was beyond delicious, and my friend wanted to take all the leftovers home lol Inside wasn't too busy as we went mid-late afternoon when most restaurants are usually closed in between lunch and dinner. Our servers were amazing, brought out our food promptly, and even took some nice pics of us. They still had their xmas tree/decor up and that brought a nice, warm vibe to the place overall. Highly recommend if you're in the area. It will not disappoint :)

Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, and Garlic Naan

Been there twice now and each time has been great. The hospitality is always awesome. Sometimes at Indian restaurants wait times for food are a little long. But so far hasn't been the case here. Food taste great and portion sizes are just right. I will definitely continue to come.

tkka masala, bhaigan charts, and bullet naan! soooo good!

Wow! We passing through vacaville while traveling and decided to stop and see if we could find a place to get a quick bite to eat. vacaville is filled with franchise restaurants, so when we saw Essence on yelp, we decided to try them. We were delighted by our visit! they service was so friendly - always a great start! we ordered papadum to start, and then chicken tikka masala and bhaigan barta and their bullet naan. everything was amazing! Fresh, tasty, and SPICY! We love it hot, and they brought the spice! We will be desiring to come here again for sure! Give them a try of you are on the area - you may find Essence to be a new favorite - we did!

    Veggie samosa, pretty good

The food is pretty good and flavorful, but we waited VERY long for the food to come out. Not sure if it's always like this, but just in case, you might want to anticipate that and allow yourself extra time when eating here. We were almost late for our concert and we already gave ourselves extra time. Moving on to the food. We ordered a veggie samosa, chicken tikki malasa, a lamb dish, shrimp curry, garlic naan. I'm not a big spice person so we got mostly mild, but for the lamb, we got medium. I think medium spice is pretty good. The mild was slightly too mild for me. The lamb dish was really good. Full of flavor and the spice was just right for me. The shrimp was very tender and fresh. The chicken tikki was pretty standard. The one thing I did like about the garlic naan was that it was kind of crunchy, but I think it needs way more garlic. The veggie samosa was good, it had a little spice to it which they normally don't at many places we've tried. The filling was abundant. Overall, I'd come back but I would definitely allow a lot of time for the food to come perhaps.

Driving down the freeway from Bay Area to Sacramento sister found this place it's a real gem. Don't shy away because of the location or how it looks from outside. It felt very homie inside everything for the appetizers to the nun bed and everyone's on tree especially liked mine the Essence signature chicken lots of strong bold flavors. Elton helped us out very friendly. I would recommend one of the top Indian places I've been and my dad said it was his second time at an Indian restaurant and he loved it.

Okay I see why this place is 5 stars on Yelp! Essence Indian Cuisine is definitely a hole-in-the-wall. It's on a corner that you'll never expect to have such a cuisine. Parking is very limited but if you're lucky, I recommend checking them out. The aroma of spices and herbs is what will greet you once you step inside their establishment. Once seated, you'll be given waters and of course, the menu lol Their eats are fairly priced and for a good amount. One order of their chicken dishes was enough for two people. Yelp Elite Dario O. and I ordered the Essence Signature Chicken which came with rice. We also ordered garlic naan ( a must!!! ). It came with two, cut into four pieces. The Essence Signature Chicken was creamy, tender and flavorful. It kind of tasted like Butter Chicken but with a slight tangy flavor. The naan was nice and light. Crisp yet slightly fluffy. Service was great. They were timely with bringing out our orders and checked in a good amount of times. Essence seems to have regulars because there was a couple sitting behind us and when they were done, I heard them say, "See you next Monday!" To have regulars every week, then you know they are yummy! Overall, I highly suggest checking out Essence Indian Cuisine! I know I'll be back soon!

    Mushroom Bhaji

I am not sure how to feel about the service of this place. They brought the chicken out first and the chutney came out much later. They brought the dal out first and the naan took its own time. They should synchronize the main course in a way so that customers don't have to wait that long before their food gets cold. Ambiance is standard. Vacaville needs more decent Indian restaurants. 1. Pav bhaji 2/5 - pav were super sweet like Hawaiian buns. 2. Dal 4/5 great on flavor 3. Meat platter - chicken tasted dry with too much coloring, shrimp was amazing and salmon tastes too fishy 4. Naan 5/5 on flavor 5. Mushroom bhaji 4/5 on flavor Overall, there's a lot of room for improvement in terms of actual food authenticity, flavor and freshness and overall service. I think this place works for the non indian palette but its nowhere near the authentic South Bay Indian restaurants.

    Mango Lassi
    Charline T.

Hands down the best Indian food in the area! I regularly come here with friends and family and everyone agrees that THIS is the spot to be at. Tucked away with a small parking lot, it's a cozy Indian food place with amazing flavor. The door can be a bit hard to open, but just pull/push hard enough and it'll open. Waiters greet us and sit us pretty quickly. The place is always clean with only a few tables inside and solid dish-ware. Servers check in regularly if we need anything. Mom and I came in on Mother's Day and didn't know they had a reservation list already going, but we were seated at a table for two without a reservation because I'm assuming we were a small enough party. After ordering, it can take a bit of a wait to get your food, but it is well worth the wait. The mango lassi is so good! Highly recommend the salmon tandoori, butter chicken, and lamb biryani. The assorted naan is freshly made and definitely shareable. Some dishes also come with a side of rice. The food is always consistently freshly made, hot, and delicious. Spice levels are also accurate. If you want solid Indian food, come to this place!

This place was extremely flavorful in the best way. It was my first time dining here. From what I ordered, would highly recommend Bhindi Masala for a veg dish and the Pepper Chicken for non-veg. I loved every dish those were just my favorite so far. Will be back to explore more. The atmosphere was inviting and the service made us feel genuinely taken care of.

    Fly in Mango Lassi
    Tariq B.

I've been a customer of essence for a long time. We order from here on a weekly basis, and occasionally have larger orders when we entertain family and friends, our order yesterday will be our last. We were disgusted to find a fly near the bottom of our mango lassi cup. For a fly to get into this drink that means they either don't cover their yogurt or their mango pulp, or they have flies in their cooler or they let these items sit out in unrefrigerated environments uncovered which is even worse. Thanks Essence you just lost a regular customer.

    Butter Chicken- delicious
    Heidy C.

Wow! The food is delicious. The flavors of each dish was exactly what I was looking for. We ordered samosa chaat to start. Great portion and so flavorful. For the main entree, we ordered bhaighan barta, Tandoori chicken, butter chicken and garlic naan. We were so impressed with the flavors. Each item was delicious. You don't have to order rice because it comes with your order. We enjoyed our food and will definitely come here when we want to eat Indian food.

Hi Shaheen, at the moment, Lamb that we use is Halaal. Down the road we may incorporate more halaal meat as we cater to more people. Thanks.

The alligator meat was soft and not chewy or dry and "tastes like chicken." You literally cannot tell the difference by look and taste. Texturally, the meat has a slightly more chew to it than chicken, but other than that 99%+ people would not know the difference. Other dishes we had were: Pad See You (beef), Mango Curry, Tom Kha Soup, Eggplant S'il Vous Plait and Papaya Salad. Everything was delicious! Service: Great! Waitress was very attentive and came by multiple times to check on us and refill our water without asking. She also came by when it was the last call before the kitchen closed to see if we wanted to order other dishes or desserts. The prices have gone up some from their old menu, but the portions have also gotten bigger. We had different servers who attended to us and they're both friendly and looked cheerful. We got there towards the end of Happy Hour and was presented with their Happy Hour menu. The menu is small, easy to read and has almost everything we'd want for that time of day - including the drinks. The food is a 'hit' or 'miss'. Here's my review: Drinks: Both the Arnold Palmer and the Cadillac Margarita were good. My lemonade tea wasn't overly sweet and I could definitely taste the lemonade. The pitcher of Cadillac Margarita looks innocent but may give someone a slow and powerful buzz if you're not used to the drink. (4.75 of 5) Charcuterie: This a complete appetizer board. Overall, there were some hits and misses, however, we agreed this is a well thought out appetizer board. (4 of 5) Crispy Brussels Sprouts: This is the best dish here, featuring deeply caramelized, dark golden-brown edges and a nutty, earthy flavor. Their Crispy Brussels Sprouts is also the best we've had. The seasoning is on-point, allowing the texture to show off its crackling, crunchy bite on the outside, contrasted by a tender, melt-in-your-mouth interior. (5 of 5) Seasonal Tacos: "Oh WOW!" The explosion of spicy and tangy flavours balanced by contrasting textures makes this dish "pop". (4.75 of 5) Beet Salad: The colours were lovely, but this beet salad was over-salted. The vibrant dish featuring beets as the main ingredient, balances the earthy sweetness with contrasting textures and flavours. If this wasn't too salty, it would have been more refreshing. (3.75 of 5) Coconut Lime Bouillabaisse (halibut, jasmine rice, spinach, snap pea, pickled shiitake mushroom, coconut lime broth, basil oil): Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Bouillabaisse means seafood. The only seafood we noticed were chunks of halibut, which were delicious. This dish looks and tastes more like an elevated Thai soup dish that cost too much. (3.5 of 5) After walking in, we decided to sit outdoors because of the loud music that was playing. We're glad we did. The overhang on the veranda was well positioned with plants and flowers softening the cement walkway. The weather was pleasant - with a gentle breeze blowing down the corridor. Parking is easy if you arrive early enough. One last note: Back Door Bistro in Vacaville was featured on "Check, Please! Bay Area"

Monday had a completely different dynamic. From the very beginning, the staff was huddled by the juice press complaining about the music playlist and debating how & who was going to address the problem of the music playlist (or lack thereof - not sure which). Eventually, one of them acknowledged us and took our order. We sat down to wait and that's when the cashier walked over to the staff that was standing by the juice press and they continued complaining about the "playlist" or creating a playlist or something *I dunno* All I know is that one person was standing at the juice press and waiting for something and the other employee just stood there talking to her about the music playlist and who is "going to tell him". It was a full 6 minutes of us just sitting there. Nobody was even attempting to start my coffee order. My husband finally got up and told them that we are on a timeline. That's when the employee standing next to the employee staring at the juice press walked over to the Expresso machine and started to make my drink. Then they made it incorrectly, giving me only 2 shots not the 3 that I paid for. Then she proceeded to dump some of the liquid from the cup out and simply added another shot. This is wrong on so many levels. The coffee is delicious, the cold pressed juices are fresh and perfectly balanced. The customer service is hit/miss. Oh, and the tip jar is back front and center. Ironic that is is the last thing I was willing to do after the crappy service. PS Not sure what all the fuss is about the music playlist, BUT it's a BIG F*ing Deal for Mondays staff. The place serves authentic Thai dishes and it is best to share family style if you come with several people so that you can experience more dishes. Started with a Sake "Mohito". It was very good. Mild flavor and not crazy strong. I nursed it throughout my entire meal. The Fresh Spring Rolls were as the name advertised. Vegetarian with tofu inside. Interesting thing is that it was served with two sauces, but the traditional peanut sauce but also a Thai Sweet Chili sauce. I decided to combine both sauces onto my Spring Rolls. Surprisingly, the two sauces complemented each other pretty well. The Yellow Curry was smooth and thick (not watery like some places). Rich is flavor. I can probably just eat some plain rice with just the curry sauce and I would be happy. It's that good. The Crispy Chicken with Ginger Rice was a crowd favorite as well. The chicken itself was solid but pretty standard. The ginger rice added a unique flavor to the dish. I've never had ginger rice at a restaurant before. We also had a stir fry dish that was composed of asparagus and a protein of your choice. We chose chicken. It was also solid but not as unique as the other two entrees we had. The fried chicken was very crispy but again there was no seasoning it just tasted like oil. After eating we waited about 20 minutes for our check. The other wait staff would go to their table and directly leave. No one checked on us after we asked for sauces for the food. I had to get up and go inside to ask for to go containers and had to wait even longer for the check although I asked for both at the same time. I also had to ask repeatedly for the Togo order and was left waiting on that then waited even longer with the waitress never coming back for the check. I had to end up walking inside and paying with a random person at the counter. This totaled over a 40 minute wait with my family eventually leaving with the kids and me waiting to box our food and pay because it was taking so long which is unacceptable.
