Had dinner here for Valentine's Day and the restaurant was extremely busy, nonetheless we were still very well taken care of. The food is freshly made with lots of flavor and the spicy flavor is also customizable which we loved! The garlic nann was hot and fresh it was delicious! Can't wait to be back.

We stopped in to try something new and different and are so happy we did! We ordered the garlic na'an, the chicken saag, and chicken momo - all delicious!! Very nice young man waited on us.

I love this place. Tonight our power went out so we decided to actually dine out. We had the vegetable pakora and chicken korma. The pakora are so good. The korma is also delicious!

During some time in downtown SR we decided to stop in here on a whim for a lunch on a weekend. We parked in the mostly open lot, and because it was a sunday, we didn't have to pay for parking which was an added bonus. Other than the people working there, and some folx coming in for to-go orders, we were the only dine-in customers the entire time we were there. Arjun helped us to a table and got us some menus. It was chilly the day we visited here, so we both ordered a Nepalese Chai ($3 each) while we looked over the menu. Although they had lot of dishes that were unique, I decided to go with my usual and try the Vegetarian Tikka Masala ($14.99) with Brown Rice ($1), and hubby followed suit with Chicken Tikka Tandori ($15.99) both medium spice, and a side of Cheese Naan ($3.99). While we waited, I visited the bathroom and it was terrible. I was really dismayed with the bathroom situation, and hoped it had no reflection on the quality or experience of the food. Once back to the table, an unfortunate issue started to arise with someone picking up a to-go order, and clashing with the staff here. Apparently, the person picking up the food came in a little early, and the person behind the counter was multitasking and gave them the -shoo- hand signal to come back later. The person was wildly offended by this and went totally ballistic, yelling, pacing, and eventually leaving loudly without paying or taking the food. This understandably caused a commotion in the kitchen and the entire staff struggled to understand how this all happened. Once our food came out, it was really not good. Both of our meals were so spicy, we couldn't eat them, and just being in the vicinity of the dishes was making our eyes water. We told our server they were too hot, and he just offered to bring us to-go boxes. Ultimately, I think our issue and the issue of the person who had the interaction above were both about miscommunication and a language barrier. The only things we were able to eat were the cheese naan and the rice accompaniment which were both fine, but those just couldn't save this dining experience. I really had high hopes for this restaurant, but between the massive miscommunication issues, the overwhelming spice, the deplorable state of the bathroom and the high cost for the dishes for food we really couldn't even consume, this is not high on our list for places to try again.

This downtown Santa Rosa restaurant serves Himalayan / Indian cuisine with an authenticity rarely seen here in the North Bay. The tandoori chicken alone is a paragon: grilled to perfection on the outside in delectable spices, which contrasts nicely to the tender, moist flesh inside. You'll just have to taste it yourself.

Amazing food! Got the aloo tikka, veggie tikka masala, kafal fried rice, and garlic naan, of course. Everything was amazing--some of the best food I've had in Santa Rosa! 10/10 recommend!

I was going to give them 4 stars but their service leaves a lot to be desired for. I ordered takeout from their website. First, taking 50 mins for a takeout order was surprising. I've lived in many cities and usually, it doesn't take more than 30 mins to get Desi food. Any way, it was also raining quite a bit, so I actually got there later than the 50 mins. I got in and you could see that there was no system. Two people were hovering around the counter. One server was working the tables and hovering around the counter. There was nobody as such to ask my order for. Then, when I told them what I'd ordered, they couldn't find it. I'm pretty sure that they did not realize you can also order through their website, so my order wasn't ready. The main person tried to cover it up by saying they're still working on it. But I could hear him call out the order when I told him what it was. Then, my bill had come to a total of $30. When he ran it at the counter, it was $32. Two bucks is not much in the grand scheme of money, but why would your website show one price and your teller another? And then, he asked me, where did you order this from (while looking at the order email from their website on my phone)? He looked very confused when I said it was from their website. Finally, I got everything sorted out and left but this whole service thing left a negative view in my mind. The food itself was very good! I got a spicy kadhai mushroom which was spicy and delicious. The chilli chicken is the closest I've eaten to real indo-chinese food from home. So once I got over the chaos of the pickup, I did enjoy the food. But you guys need to buckle up with the service!

Thank you Mackenzie , Yes we do charge for Corkage fee. Thank you.

Do they have a lunch buffet or lunch specials?

They do have a buffet, however, the fresh food off the menu is so incredibly good that I always opt for that. Best Indian food in sonoma county.

I'd consider giving them another try but would give another place a go first. I'm obsessed just with Indian food and love it so much. My favorite place is in Windsor on the green. I ordered a CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA and Naan bread. The restaurant was clean and well lit. The meal came out quickly as was hot. We've been coming to Taj Cafe for a while, and yet, I have been hesitant to write a review, because…read moreour story together begins with a slightly strange experience. Lately though, they expanded their menu, and holy moly, I had to write this review. They might have changed ownership too? Not sure, but something is definitely different. Generally, the food has always been good, but yesterday, our socks were knocked off by the tastiness of our meal here. First off: They now have deep fried momo's. And holy cow. We've had their steamed momo's which are good, but these deep fried ones are everything you want them to be. Crunchy on the outside and the chicken on the inside has a curry spice to it. It was a little on the salty side, but it didn't deter too much. The curry dipping sauce is also incredible. We also had a baigan bartha (eggplant) and chicken korma - both were way excellent! I feel like they really up'd the game. The chicken korma was so flavorful, even more so than before. I hadn't gotten the baigan bartha from here in a long time, but it was pretty awesome. Likely, they up'd the butter and cream... that's usually how it goes. But I dunno... maybe not just that, there's more complexity to the food. Anyhow, it was amazing. The service here is a little toned down, but not bad. You get the feeling that the workers / owners are pretty new here to the US... which takes me to the strange experience I had early on... On our 2nd time there, we asked for glasses of water, and what they brought out was incredibly hot water in water glasses. It was boiling hot. My husband asked if they could cool bring us cold water, and they were not super happy about that request, but they tried to do it. They came back with less hot water, but still warm. It was weird. You're eating spicy indian food, you want some cold water to cool you down. Anyhow, not sure if there was something going on with their water system, or what. But they were not very communicative, which makes me think perhaps they are new to the US. No judgement - coming from an Asian American myself. Anyhow, nothing weird like that happened afterwards, (they give you cold water) but I do sometimes deter from coming here because it's slightly hole-in-the-wall-ish. The lights are dim, making it feel a bit dingy. I hate to say it but as I get older, I just am less excited about hole-in-the-wall places, even though I loved them when I was younger. Now, I just want to eat in a nice enviornment. Either way, the food is great, and also not too expensive. So, we will continue to come. How can we not get those fried momo's!!!

Chicken tika masala - tandoori roasted chicken simmered in a mild creamy sauce. Our sweet server (owner?) mentioned that about 95% of the people love this dish and I am definitely in that group. Wonderful flavors and generous amount of tender chicken. Tofu, kale & potato curry - ingredients all simmered with basil and coconut milk. Very flavorful and seemed healthy. My husband would definitely order again. Our server was friendly, caring and was always smiling. Two servers were handling the entire dining room plus the outdoor diners and they were seamless in their efforts. Inside the restaurant there is a calming feeling as they were playing slow Hindu chanting music low on their sound system. The first server We began with was very young and maybe learning the menu still as he was really not that good at answering questions on the menu. As soon as we checked in on Yelp, suddenly service picked up. Another more experienced server brought us first, hand towels to wipe out hands (a nice touch, but the towels were almost cold when he brought them, was it an after thought?); and he also brought us complimentary cups of dal that were very tasty. The dishes we got were saag lamb, butter chicken, and organic channa masala, and garlic buttered Naan. Had our first server known how to describe menu better we may have chosen a few different items. He did recommend the butter chicken as one of his favorite so that's why we got it as we often enjoy it other places as well. It was very good, a classic with great sauce, probably the favorite dish. The saag lamb was good too, but we almost got the patak lamb, similar sounding dish but maybe creamier/ other veggie too? But our first server could not really describe difference well. I'm thinking we may have enjoyed the other dish better than saag lamb which was good, but felt the spinach was extremely over cooked, and so finely chopped almost like it was highly minced or powdered? But it was flavorful. The Channa Masala was on the dry side. We we're trying to decide on a saucy vegetable dish and we asked about this dish because we liked that it said organic. That same first server said it was saucy, but not that saucy. Each dish comes with your choice of white or brown rice, or steamed veggies. Two dishes we got brown rice with, and the third we got steamed veggies because we thought there would be more sauce overall to add them too. The rice was allot ( took quite a bit home); the veggies were this nice mix, but so boring with no taste, and what a waste. The veggies even had water floating in bottom of dish. It would be so much nicer if there were an option to have these lightly stirfried with a little flavor as an option ( they were completely bland) , and there was really not enough saucy stuff to add them to so only partially eaten, left remaining there on table instead of taking home with other stuff. We asked for a sample of their side sauces and we got a tiny (like a tablespoon each?) 3 dish sampling of their very tasty homemade mango sauce, tart and tangy cilantro mint sauce, and some sweeter tamarind sauce. But they were very tiny amounts. The Naan was light and crisp, very nice, but could barely taste garlic butter. We asked for our dishes to be medium heat and it was fairly mild for us still, but i guess with American palate, spicy can be relative. But oh well. We also had cups of chai (under $5.00) that had refills, and a glass of house white wine ( Murphy good Sauvignon Blanc was only $8.00 so that was a deal). I'm giving 4 stars for their efforts, but hope they read this so they can improve a few things.
