This review was for my first experience at Himitsu Station, and I say first because I definitely will be back. My wife purchased the experience for my birthday, and she went ahead since I was still paying for parking. I walked down down the stairs at the corner of the hotel, and let me tell you - you are not prepared for what you are in for. Opening the door I was instantly in the subway, complete with train rumbling and just feel in the air of what it was like growing up in New York City. The second set of doors led me inside, where our ticket-taker, Tyler, greeted me with a birthday welcome. The entrance is exquisitely done, with Japanese snacks available "before boarding". They had some of the more common ones, like Pocky sticks, but a few I haven't seen since way back before I moved to Utah. Time came for our train, and I was given a token to purchase from the vending machine. Thus began our adventure. Spoiler free, but quick object of the game here is not to win quicky, but to experience the story WHILE winning. Winning, in this sense, was collecting soul tokens, to be turned in after the game. There are tons of puzzles and games to figure out, a lot of storytelling in the background, and for me (who may be slightly older than the normal demographic) there was so many artifacts and historical callouts that I was amazed. Everything from the original Godzilla Kaiju from the 1950s, to Astroboy, old Nintendo games in their original Japanese, photos, and so much more - if you like Japanese history at all, you'll be fascinated by that alone. Some of the puzzles were fairly difficult, others our team were able to figure out without relatively too much trouble, We were paired with a really good group of 4 people, who made the experience enjoyable and, despite a probably 15+ year age difference, we meshed fairly well with our skills and strengths. Special shoutout to Tyler, though, who is committed through and through to the part. Extremely welcoming, genial, and knowledgeable, he was a fantastic part of the experience. I even got a few little items to take home for my birthday, which I have happily displayed at my desk. I appreciate "the bald guy" and really want him to get recognized for such a great experience. All in all? I was thoroughly entertained by the aesthetics in general, I loved the overall feel of the experience, even weeks later I am still amazed by some of the items they have even in the opening room, and I've recommended it to a ton of people. A+ entertainment in Utah, something I really hope they expand on. read more

I saw a few ads for this experience on Facebook or IG, and my husband had it recommended to him by a friend. We absolutely love escape rooms, so we were very keen to try this! We managed to snag the last 2 spots that opened up during the 5:05 time slot before our flight back home. The branding was very impressive. The initial theme was Japanese subway station, and the entrance to the escape room was underground and through a cool little hallway that reminded me completely of the movie, "Exit 8". As we entered the lobby, we were greeted by the most enthusiastic, welcoming, and professional host, Tyler, who gave us a great rundown on what to expect and the format of the game. We were told that we were not only to purely focus on solving the clues, but also to look for coins that we can collect as "soul coins"? And having more of those will win us more points. We were paired with another group of 4, where 3 of them had done this experience before. Then mentioned that they will let the newbies try to "figure out most of the clues". Unfortunately the other group was very enthusiastic, and ended up just giving us instructions the entire time on how to solve each clue. I spent a lot of my time just wandering and looking for coins, because I feel that everyone else completely took over the clues, and I didn't have much of a chance to "figure anything out". There were a few spaces in the rooms that only fit 1-2 people, so I don't even think I got to see the entire rooms. At the end of the game, Tyler noticed that I was a bit upset because I personally did not have a good time. They offered to refund us, as well as gave us an option to come back and try the experience again. I felt pretty bad because my experience had nothing to do with how the game was run, we were just unfortunate paired with the wrong people. I would definitely come back again to give the game another change, but I would try to bring enough friends to fill an entire group! Thanks Tyler and owner for being so understanding and empathetic of the situation, I am blown away by the hospitality and compassion of the company. Himitsu Station was something fed to me by "the algorithm", knowing I was in SLC, and knowing where my true interests lie. Having just traveled to Japan with my wife and sons less than a year ago (for my fourth time), our AI Overlords believed I would be a sucker for a Japanese supernatural train station-themed escape room. They were right, of course. Although Himitsu Station was even more than I had reckoned for! Whether you book a timeslot in advance (recommended, as they fill up fast!), or are lucky enough to find a walk-in opening, you are greeted at the service desk by a friendly, engaging (and in our case, bespectacled) conductor named Tyler, who gave us the run-down on safety, navigating the space safely, how to collect points and "soul coins" (a meta currency used to track progress and success), a few vague hints on how to bypass certain obstacles, and to keep our eyes peeled. When our time came, the nearby vending machine opened up (after inserting a special coin provided by the conductor), and off we went, into the bowels of Himitsu Station. There are four major puzzle rooms to solve: without giving too much away, these rooms consist of: "junk alley" (several booths of various merchants selling odds and ends, curios and electronics that must be solved and cross-utilized to proceed; "the boiler room" (where you must revive a living furnace to unlock the next passage; "the abandoned marketplace" (several open-air shops with various items [including free candy!] and iconography scattered about that are needed to open the sliding door that leads to...); and the ramen shop (where you must correctly identify the right combination of ingredients to place an order). Whether or not you "solve" each room in the allotted time, you will progress to the next, with your successes (and failures) noted and ranked for your inevitable disappointment, when you complete the challenge and end up back in the station lobby. Of all the challenge rooms, we apparently excelled at the boiler room, and managed to complete the ramen shop in the nick of time, but definitely failed to unlock all the secrets of junk alley and the marketplace. Partially I believe this is due to their being "too many cooks in the kitchen", as our party of five ended up with a couple of unhelpful tag-a-longs who weren't the most enthusiastic, or helpful, allies for our adventure. It only takes a couple of extra voices, or pairs of hands moving things around, to muddy the waters REAL fast. That said, that is not a mark against Himitsu Station, but a commentary on the nature of escape rooms (with randos) as a genre. Worth the price? Absolutely! Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! Even know, with a better understanding of how the puzzles are constructed and presented, the rooms we didn't solve to completion would still be worthy challenges full of welcome surprises. Hell, the ambiance alone is worth the price of admission: a stunning blend of Studio Ghibli/Spirited Away aesthetics coupled with a densha otaku's attention to detail, I don't think there is a comparably awesome interactive experience like this to be found anywhere in the United States. Honestly, Himitsu Station would probably work just as well if it were build beneath the streets of Tokyo, and that's probably the best compliment I could pay towards it. This place was SO FUN! It is a new and unique take on an escape room. There isn't a timer and so you go through the whole experience but there are puzzles to solve along the way. You collect coins and you gain as many as possible through the experience! Really unique and fun. It is dark so be warned if you are not able to see well or can't crouch down to small spaces at times this experience may not be as good for you. Himitsu Station is a Salt Lake City must. It's full of life and character, way beyond any traditional escape room available in the city. It is such a gem of an experience. The experience starts the moment you enter and doesn't end until you are walking back up the steps. The story, attention to detail, and special effects are absolutely incredible. While the hour passes by quickly, it is well worth the cost and will leave you wanting to come back. Himitsu Station is not a one and done, there are more puzzles to solve and more goodies to find. Make sure to arrive a little early as there is more to enjoy beforehand. I'm beyond thrilled SLC now has an experience that rivals Meow Wolf and the like. read more

Genuinely one of the greatest escape rooms we've ever done. The theming is a 10/10. The details are a 10/10. There's so much to explore and discover that it's hard not to just stop and take it all in and forget why you're there. Honestly, I'd argue it's Disney-level theming (if not better) compared to most escape rooms. We found out afterwards that the room is designed so everything can be turned inside out safely. I know, I know, escape rooms are meant for that but there's so much to look at here that it almost feels like you might mess something up that isn't part of the game. At first it feels wrong to search that deeply, but trust me, don't hold back. They also mentioned that at certain times it would be intentionally dark, but even for me (someone who doesn't love small dark spaces) it still felt comfortable. I was worried it might have jump scares like some of the darker escape rooms I've done before, but I'm happy to report it didn't. That made me feel so much more relaxed and will definitely make me more comfortable going into it next time or for anyone trying it the first time. We're planning the next trip back because we know there's so much we didn't get to. Absolutely worth it and I'd recommend it to anyone. You've got to give it a try! read more

This was an absolutely amazing experience - from the moment we walked in all the way to the moment we left. The "Train Station Attendant" greeting us in a formal suit was icing on the cake. He treated us like royal guests and presented himself with a poise and formality that I would expect only in Japan. That totally sold the feeling of BEING somewhere SPECIAL. As we walked through the rooms, it was like stepping into some of our favorite anime - like Spirited Away. I was so into the atmosphere that I almost forgot that we were supposed to be solving the escape rooms. Absolutely fantastic. AND - the candy jars at the vendors inside the rooms? 100% awesome. Like a little reward for working on the puzzles. My son wanted to do an escape room for his birthday... his birthday from 2023!!! But, I had told him about Himitsu Station and he wanted to do THIS escape room for his birthday. He waited patiently for almost two years to receive his birthday present and he absolutely adored Himitsu Station. When we finished, he was presented with a wonderful handwritten note and a Himitsu Station sticker, thanking him for his long-time support. Seriously an amazing touch to an already fantastic night. ------None of this is a reflection on Himitsu------ Here's the negative, and NONE of it has to do with Himitsu Station. The group we were paired up with definitely wasn't as into it as we were and complained most of the way through. They were talking loudly about stuff that was non-related, they would talk over the characters in the rooms so that we couldn't hear the hints, then they'd get frustrated that they couldn't figure out puzzles (because they hadn't heard the hints), they'd ignore us when we'd make suggestions, and their frustration lead to them talking louder - which continued to keep us from hearing the repeated clues. It was a very frustrating way to try to solve the puzzles. They wouldn't share puzzle pieces they were holding onto, which kept others from attempting to help, etc. We didn't finish a single room, always ran out of time. ------ Here's my suggestion. Make sure you have a good group and have good escape room etiquette for those who are going in with you. OR - just pay the extra to have a private experience... in retrospect I really wish we had paid extra and done it ourselves! We might not have finished all the puzzles, but we surely would have gotten further. Some escape rooms might not be worth shelling out extra for a private experience, but I honestly think that Himitsu Station is WORTH IT!!! We will be going back, and I'll be paying extra for a private game just to ensure that we get to enjoy the experience to the fullness that it deserves! read more

Himitsu Station was hands down one of the coolest escape-style experiences I've ever done. The second you walk through the door, you're pulled into this hidden Japanese underground station, and the set design is honestly theme-park level. Every stall, hallway, and corner feels lived-in and full of tiny details you want to stop and look at even while you're trying to progress through the story. The puzzles are super creative and feel like they belong in the world, not just random locks thrown in for the sake of it. There are a lot of interactive elements that make you feel like you're actually helping those inhabiting the world. Our game master, Ekiin (Tyler), made the whole experience even better. He was welcoming from the moment we arrived, kept the story fun and engaging, and just had a great energy throughout. We were there for a birthday, and the team went above and beyond, they surprised us with a thoughtful card and even sent us home with a small keepsake. It was such a kind touch and made the whole visit feel special. If you're in Salt Lake and want something unique, immersive, and just plain fun, Himitsu Station is absolutely worth it. This was so much fun! We went as a group of 8 and our friend who organized it told us nothing about our evening. We showed up not knowing anything about what we were going to experience. This was a blast. The person who welcomed us was an amazing sport who leaned into our mystery date vibe. I've done several escape rooms but this one was unique and special. Himitsu is seriously amazing! Jesse and I got married today and decided to go visit himitsu as a fun post-wedding activity. We were in a group with 3 other adults and a younger kid. It was so fun! We went through and found soul coins to save the souls from the station. As we were going through it seemed like an urgent thing to get through; but being as there was a little, the experience was catered to the younger kids. It was so fun! We met several creatures and saved lots of souls. I especially like that we were given hints throughout the experience. At the very end; Tyler took us to the side, congratulated us for our marriage and let us go back for some exclusive pics with one of the characters. We had a great time.
