We recently spotted Hindustani and decided to give it a try. The restaurant immediately caught our attention with its beautiful décor, stylish atmosphere, and amazing views. Everything was very clean and well-maintained. They also have a separate bar area that looked very inviting, with a stunning window view. We were welcomed with complimentary papad and chutneys, which were fresh and delicious. For appetizers, we ordered the dahi bhalla and aloo tikki chaat. Unfortunately, the aloo tikki chaat was forgotten initially, but the staff later brought it out. For our main course, we had the butter chicken, chicken hakka noodles, and masala dosa. The butter chicken and hakka noodles were excellent, and even my kids enjoyed them. My husband, however, wasn't very impressed with the dosa. By the time the aloo tikki chaat arrived, we were already full and had to take it home. We ended up trying it later and absolutely loved the flavor. The staff was friendly and attentive despite the restaurant being quite busy. The only downside was the longer wait time for the food. Overall, we had a pleasant experience and would return to try more items from the menu. read more

So many choices! I honestly want to go on the same bike ride so that I can eat here again, otherwise, I am never in this area! A group of friends and I got together to ride our ebikes along the nearby bike trail. We were famished after and the entire time, we knew we were going to end up here (at the bottom of the bike trail. The hostess was so welcoming and it seemed that everyone we met was just the same. The food was fantastic! The drinks were just okay and not the best. I will be back at some point to give it another try. Other than that, everything about the place was great. I think we all went home with doggie bags because the plates were so much food! If you are in the area, definitely stop by. You will not be disappointed. One of my friends and fellow Yelpers recommended this place. I was crushed to learn that the China Gorge Panda went out of business. I was quite skeptical and had high expectations for a new restaurant. Ive been out to Hood River twice this year and both times I went here for lunch. This year they added a lunch buffet. I actually like the addition of a small buffet because you can try a variety of authentic dishes for a solid $20. There were a lot of vegetarian and chicken choices. They have a lot fantastic choices on their regular menu too. They provide Naan bread with the meal as well. There is a small fee to use a credit card, but nothing outrageous. The food is delicious and you will definitely go away full. I overheard people at our next table saying they were visitors to the area but it was their second visit in 2 days because they loved the food so much. Hood River has changed a lot in the last 5 years with business shifts. I'm excited to try out more places in the gorge and Hous River, but it's definitely hard because my heart and stomach definitely got mesmerized by this newer place. I'm definitely a fan. read more

I finally got to get a chance to go into this new restaurant. The service was awesome. Very attentive menu robust with many options. It May take some time to figure out what you want but you will definitely like whatever you order. I tried the masala dosa,butter chicken, and the garlic Naan 10 out of 10 will be coming back. Customer service was awesome happened to mention it was someone in our parties birthday in conversation while ordering. They were able to surprise us with a rendition of a happy birthday and a surprise dessert much appreciated! Great views!! read more

Fantastic Indian food! We visited Hindustani restaurant for lunch on a Sunday, and it was mostly empty. The restaurant has a lot of fun decor, and there are about four tables with a good view of the river. I tried the paneer pakora and vegetarian nizami handi. Before our meal arrived, a server brought two papadums with two sauces. The papadums and sauces were both as good as any that I have tried. The paneer pakora was excellent with a hint of spice in the breading. The vegetarian nizami handi had a delicious sauce. It was exciting to see a new Indian restaurant pop up in the Hood river area. We came on a Saturday night around 5:30pm and waited just around 10 minutes for a table. The inside is more upscale with vibrant decor and has some tables with a river front view. I appreciated the complimentary cracker-like bread that was provided with two sweet and savory chutneys for dipping. My family spilt three curries, which was more than enough food for the three of us. The panner butter masala was my favorite of the curries, as it was decadent and creamy. The channa masala was pretty solid in flavor. The chicken vindaloo had a nice level of heat, but was oddly also pretty sweet. Overall, the curries were delicious but didn't have quite the depth of flavor that the best Indian curries have, in my opinion. Our server was very friendly, however, I will note the restaurant did seem understaffed, as they quickly became overwhelmed with more customers and lots of takeout orders. I hope they are able to hire some more help in order to keep the place running smoothly. read more

We went out to the Gorge to ride our e-bikes. We decided to eat lunch after the ride at Hindustani. When we parked our vehicles in their parking lot, it smelled so good! We definitely built up an appetite during our bike ride, and the delicious smells coming from the restaurant definitely had me salivating! We were greeted warmly when we entered the restaurant. The restaurant is beautifully decorated. They took our drink orders, giving us time to read over the menu. I loved that there were clearly marked V next to vegan items. I had a hard time deciding what to order. I ended up getting the Navratan Korma (V). It was so creamy and delicious! It came with rice and it came with roti. I also got the veg fried rice. Also delicious! The staff was very friendly. After we finished eating, we walked around to check the rest of the restaurant out. Very beautiful. There's a spot with windows that have a beautiful view of Hood River. My only disappointment was that they charged for a refill of iced tea. This place was great! We were so happy to find delicious and fresh Indian food in Hood River. I am obsessed with the chaat. We had the samosa chaat and it was one of the most flavorful dishes I've ever had. Flavor just burst from every bite. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I've now been to the Hindustani Restaurant on two separate occasions; once for a lunch buffet and once for dinner. I grew up in the Bay Area where Indian restaurants were a dime a dozen and so feel like I can claim with some level of authority that the Hindustani Restaurant is the real deal. Don't know what to order? Pick your favorite protein if you're a meat eater and start with a curry. If you like spicy, make sure to let them know as they tend to be more on the mild side. If you're vegetarian, you can't go wrong with their chana masala (curried garbanzo beans) and samosas. Everything is good there; between the two meals, I probably had close to 10 different dishes. We come here almost every Saturday for their $20 buffet and enjoy chicken tikka masala, butter naan, steamed rice, vegetable or lentil soup, paneer masala, and veggie pakora with an assortment of salad items. Highly recommend if you love Indian food! If you have never tried Indian food check out the lunch buffet on weekends and try the chicken tikka masala, haven't met anyone yet that doesn't like this dish! This is based on 2 experiences in the past 2 months: one dine-in, and one takeout. Dine-in at lunch was probably a 4.5 star rating: moist chicken tandoori, a bright tasting chickpea salad garnished with orange slices, hot naan. The service was friendly, and the food arrived timely & clearly well-prepared. Then there's takeout: The one experience (August 2) was disappointing, beginning with the way you can TRY to order. I started with the online offering - to receive a popup notification saying to call to order. That went to voicemail, and we know that a callback isn't going to happen. After waiting about 10 minutes, I googled the restaurant and dialed a 732-prefix # that appeared for them. I got a "Hello" and when asked if it was Hindustani and whether I could place an order, was told "yes." The person agreed, took my name and items, and then hung up. No info on when the order would be ready. I called back 3 times with no answer - on the 4th call the person picked up. I asked about when the order would be ready and got the info. I got to the restaurant at the time suggested (probably 5 minutes early). Food was bagged and ready to go (chicken tandoori, lamb seekh kebab, the chickpea salad, and naan). I'm pretty close to the restaurant, but besides being disappointed in the unprofessional way of handling takeout (just don't have takeout if you can't manage it!), the naan was oily and not flavorful; the lamb seekh kebab was very dry and not particularly flavorful). Chickpea salad held up better (and it's a portion enough for 4 people to share); chicken tandoori was fine. We'll probably try a dine-in again with a different range of dishes, but will skip takeout until we hear about a few people having a more positive experience (I have to say that I've ordered online from Kirpa's at the other end of town, and in probably 8 to 10 orders it's been a fast experience online, pickup has been on time, and the food is either or cold as appropriate for the dish, with spot-on flavor). read more

THe food and service were all amazing. My only suggestion is to please serve water from tap or other source but NOT plastic bottled water. We know that this water is no cleaner than tap water but that plastic is made from petroleum which adds to climate change and also plastic bottles end up in the ocean and affect animals and eventually end up in our food. We went here 2 times for take-out. The 1st time was great. We got pakoras, samosas and lassis. The pakoras are a great size, enough to share. The samosas are nice and big also. The sauces are too small. The 2nd time we ordered entrees and were very disappointed. The size for the price was very small and there were multiple things missing. I ordered 2 extra sauces for the pakoras and was not given them without asking before I left (I also believe they charged me for the extra sauces which I was not thrilled about). With 3 entrees there were 2 rice dishes missing and NO cutlery or napkins provided. This restaurant NEEDS to check it's take-out orders before sending them out the door. read more
