It was exciting to see a new Indian restaurant pop up in the Hood river area. We came on a Saturday night around 5:30pm and waited just around 10 minutes for a table. The inside is more upscale with vibrant decor and has some tables with a river front view. I appreciated the complimentary cracker-like bread that was provided with two sweet and savory chutneys for dipping. My family spilt three curries, which was more than enough food for the three of us. The panner butter masala was my favorite of the curries, as it was decadent and creamy. The channa masala was pretty solid in flavor. The chicken vindaloo had a nice level of heat, but was oddly also pretty sweet. Overall, the curries were delicious but didn't have quite the depth of flavor that the best Indian curries have, in my opinion. Our server was very friendly, however, I will note the restaurant did seem understaffed, as they quickly became overwhelmed with more customers and lots of takeout orders. I hope they are able to hire some more help in order to keep the place running smoothly.

We went out to the Gorge to ride our e-bikes. We decided to eat lunch after the ride at Hindustani. When we parked our vehicles in their parking lot, it smelled so good! We definitely built up an appetite during our bike ride, and the delicious smells coming from the restaurant definitely had me salivating! We were greeted warmly when we entered the restaurant. The restaurant is beautifully decorated. They took our drink orders, giving us time to read over the menu. I loved that there were clearly marked V next to vegan items. I had a hard time deciding what to order. I ended up getting the Navratan Korma (V). It was so creamy and delicious! It came with rice and it came with roti. I also got the veg fried rice. Also delicious! The staff was very friendly. After we finished eating, we walked around to check the rest of the restaurant out. Very beautiful. There's a spot with windows that have a beautiful view of Hood River. My only disappointment was that they charged for a refill of iced tea. I would definitely be back the next time I'm in Hood River!

So awesome! Everything top notch. The staff is amazing and the ambiance is super special. I took hubby for his birthday and everything was great. The food absolutely delicious. It's a great change from the same ol Hood River restaurants. This is our new special occasion restaurant.

This is based on 2 experiences in the past 2 months: one dine-in, and one takeout. Dine-in at lunch was probably a 4.5 star rating: moist chicken tandoori, a bright tasting chickpea salad garnished with orange slices, hot naan. The service was friendly, and the food arrived timely & clearly well-prepared. Then there's takeout: The one experience (August 2) was disappointing, beginning with the way you can TRY to order. I started with the online offering - to receive a popup notification saying to call to order. That went to voicemail, and we know that a callback isn't going to happen. After waiting about 10 minutes, I googled the restaurant and dialed a 732-prefix # that appeared for them. I got a "Hello" and when asked if it was Hindustani and whether I could place an order, was told "yes." The person agreed, took my name and items, and then hung up. No info on when the order would be ready. I called back 3 times with no answer - on the 4th call the person picked up. I asked about when the order would be ready and got the info. I got to the restaurant at the time suggested (probably 5 minutes early). Food was bagged and ready to go (chicken tandoori, lamb seekh kebab, the chickpea salad, and naan). I'm pretty close to the restaurant, but besides being disappointed in the unprofessional way of handling takeout (just don't have takeout if you can't manage it!), the naan was oily and not flavorful; the lamb seekh kebab was very dry and not particularly flavorful). Chickpea salad held up better (and it's a portion enough for 4 people to share); chicken tandoori was fine. We'll probably try a dine-in again with a different range of dishes, but will skip takeout until we hear about a few people having a more positive experience (I have to say that I've ordered online from Kirpa's at the other end of town, and in probably 8 to 10 orders it's been a fast experience online, pickup has been on time, and the food is either or cold as appropriate for the dish, with spot-on flavor).

Veg Nizami Handi $20 and Chicken Vindaloo $22 Side pickle $3 Naan $4

This was delicious! I was always looking for really really good Indian food in Portland but felt like NYC always had the best Indian food I'd ever had. This place is incredible! Ask for a window seat to see the river :) Cant wait to go back for the Thali plate (served only at lunch.) The service was also so friendly and awesome. Definitely recommend!

    Jeera rice. So good!

I'm a huge fan of Indian food and have enjoyed it all over the US, in London, and even in India, so when I heard that Tatka was opening a truck in The 6th Street Station, I had to check them out. Lots of my favorites available - lamb vandaloo, chicken biryani, saag paneer, lamb korma, chicken tikka masala, samosa, butter chicken, naan, roti, dahl - it's so hard to choose! For those who have never had Indian food, here are some basics: -Biryani is a protein cooked with jasmine rice -Masala is a tomato based curry -Paneer is creamed spinach -Tandoori is a preparation where protein is cooked in hot oven -Kabobs are grilled -Paneer is cubed cheese, very light tasting, and picks up flavor from the curry or saag -Naan is a type of flat bread; roti is a fried bred; Dahl is a crepe. All delish! So pick your protein - chicken, lamb, fish, shrimp, paneer - and preparation, and you are good to go! Curries come with fragrant jasmine rice. Make sure to get some naan or roti to soak up the delicious sauce. For my first visit, I selected chicken masala and saag paneer, two classics. The masala had a very rich tomato base, slightly sweet with a wonderful complimentary heat. Served over the rice (which is packaged separately) and sopped up with the naan, it was fabulous! The saag paneer was also fantastic. The large chunks of paneer were delicious, and so was the creamed spinach. Next time, I will ask for a little more spice, I think they make their dishes on the mild side to please an American palette, but mine can definitely take the heat. Service with a smile! Food is made fresh to order. Definitely support them so they stay! Same owners as Amaya's Cafe food truck further east in Biggs Junction; people there rave about the food. No reason to drive 20 miles for Indian food now that Tadka has arrived in The Dalles! They open everyday at 11am. The food packs up well, and when you arrive home, it's still hot and doesn't get overcooked like some noodle dishes do, making it a great food for takeout. For those who have never been to 6ths Street Station, where Tatka is located, they are along W 6th in front of Coastal Farm & Ranch. There is indoor and outdoor seating. A bar inside and restrooms. Music some nights and other fun festivities, especially in the warmer months. Check it out!

Many patrons dining-in didn't have food, so maybe we were among the Monday dinner rush or maybe this is how the business runs here. Upon entering the business, one of the waiters seemed confident that our order wasn't ready, without first asking what our order number or name was or directing us to the area for which we would pick up. The two entrees themselves were good, spice level on par, chicken breast chunks well cut, the rice sides filled the containers and were tender and well seasoned. The naan was basic, small burnt areas and cold by the time we did our five minute drive.
