We accidentally discovered Hippopotamus after having several disappointing restaurant experiences in Paris, and it became our favorite meal of the trip. I ordered the Haché L'Original on two consecutive days because I simply couldn't stop thinking about it. Months later, I'm still trying to recreate it at home! The beef had an incredible, authentic flavor that reminded me of my childhood, and the combination of buttery onions, rich cheese sauce, bacon, and a perfectly cooked egg was unforgettable. The last 2024 family super in Paris. Walked in without reservation around 8pm, waited for half hour and got seated. Definitely it was really busy night, and long line queued next to my seating area. The menu has great options for lunch, dinner, tea time, kids and more. Also great choices on American food, classic French food and great options on kids meal. Ordered Sangria, OJ, bbq ribs, mini fondue , toasted duck leg and fish and chips( shown in pictures) great tastes and descent portion, my kids also approved their food. We have tried some amazing food in Paris but some were hit and miss for the kiddos. This was a great spot for everyone in the family to find something familiar that they can enjoy. The food here was very good. The staff does not speak English but pointing at the menu items worked just fine. Being from the US we expect our servers to return to fill up drinks and bring the check. This does not happen here. We waited about 20-30 mins for our check. The fish and chips was delicious, the goat cheese perfect and steak cooked perfectly. This is a chain and the only place we found with greens (salad). This place reminds me of a Chili's back in the US. Food: american size portions. If your hungry, come here! Tartar - It was surprisingly good. Not gamey at all and mixing it with the egg and other ingredients gave it different flavors. I would actually get this again. I do that in paris because if you order it medium or medium rare it comes out rare. The steak was huge and the meat was actual good BUT it came out rare to medium rare. I ate it because hunger won. Great grilling chain that has existed for roughly 45 years, and gets a bad rap for really no reason ! Prices are not that high and main dishes come with unlimited veggies and sauces. There are 8 different side dishes and 5 style of sauces to chose from , all super fresh ! This place is roughly the equivalent of a Denny's in the U.S. The breakfast consists of tea or coffee, and a pastry (croissant). It's decent but you can certainly get better at a corner patisserie. Yikes! What's with all the bad reviews? We had a really good meal here: My salad was fresh; spouse's Cobb salad had an unusual type of cheese (delicious) , like brie + bleu cheese combined. Horrible service! After a late night of work there were not many quick, places open close to our hotel so we tried Hippopotamus. The food was not very good, I strongly agree with some of the other reviews that reference Applebee's except Applebee's is a little tastier. The food was bland but it was diner style and late so I could get past that. The service was horrible, we had a waiter who was not in our section coming over and making rude remarks to our waiter thinking we didn't know what he was saying. I was surprised to find out this a chain, but after one meal, I can see why it is so popular. It is basically a medium-priced steak restaurant, but the quality was quite good. We three men split their biggest steak (aka the "Prime Rib") and we had left-overs. Curiously, when we said we wanted the steak cooked medium rare, our server told us it would take 30 minutes. We asked how long rare would take and she said it would be out right away. I don't live my life that dangerously, so we opted to enjoy a carafe of wine and the rolls for 30 minutes. Another great value - our steak came with unlimited sides. I am used to steak houses in the US charging $7 per side. We had french fries, green beans, baked potatos - this might be why we couldn't finish the steak. Service was good - just don't expect to be doted over like they do in the US. The Outback is much better steak, this is like a cheap steak house. Service is poor, not just for us Americans, it was poor all around as far as I could tell. Didn't get a beer until after the appetizer arrived. Sat for about 15 min before the waiter even said hello. We shared the cheese basket , which was a variety of fried cheeses, not bad. This place had horrible service the table next to us got yelled at because their server didn't understand them. My food was warm but not fresh and hot. The only thing that was good was the fries and they had no flavor. The Mac and cheese tasted like cardboard and I couldn't eat it after I tried it. I didn't even get it until I was half done with my meal and there was a skin of cheese on top which I just peeled back. The steak was ok and so were the green beans. Way nicer than what all reviews describe honestly. I have been to hippo across la region Parisienne and while it surely isn't the best place ever it can help you in few different ways. For instance it is good for group usually speaking. Like 6-7 persons can find a sit easily and not feel terribly un well. It is a little pricey but you usually get enough to eat. Plus this location is quite new so it is actually cleaner than some other bistro. The general feeling of being in a chain does not go off but it is way ok compared to what a loot of people are saying. Just don't try to go for hyper classic food, maybe even try the little expensive choices to make sure they pay attention to what they do like burgers and all. Fries were ok, better than most mcdo, my sauce was also fine. Kid menu was big too, well cooked. Saw several other dishes at my table which all went easy. Not terribly nice but easy and super convenient. You pay for conveniency not for good food. Go somewhere else for that. read more

Do not go here unless you have to! It was late and my wife and I were hungry so we stopped into hippopotamus. First of it is a European Applebee's looking place. The place was lively for late at night so we sat down. The prices were very expensive. More than the classy french bistros we have been eating at all trip.
