Hiro, STAT! This is my go-to for local and fresh sushi! My fave is the Dynamite Roll (shrimp tempura, cream cheese topped with jalapeno, sriracha, masago, spicy mayo and eel sauce)...seriously...it's DYN-A-MITE!!!! Always get the edamame...reg or spicy (prefer the spicy but both are good!). Recently ordered the chicken fried rice and it was so delicious! The wine makes us happy because they provide a generous pour for your money unlike many other local restaurants. Bottom line, the food is fresh and incredible...service is always impeccable! But the real 5+ stars about Hiro is all about the owners and staff. They are professional and kind (with a lovely touch of humor) and ALWAYS make you feel like you're an extension of their family. Sometimes hero's don't always wear capes, because the real Hiro's here lie within the strong bond and passion this family has for their restaurant. The food here is so fresh! While I would have loved bigger portions (who wouldn't?), it gave me room to try multiple things :) I usually like my poke stacked with toppings and sauces, but this place stuck to a couple of ingredients and made sure to incorporate them really well. My biggest pet peeve is when avocado is either obviously pre-mushed and packaged, or when it's overripe. As you can see here, mine was as perfect as they come. The yakisoba was super flavorful and balanced, though the sauce wasn't evenly distributed (some of the noodles were just clumped and missed out). The family that runs the restaurant is really lovely. Our server made sure I didn't have to worry about my allergies, provided consistent refills on drinks, and was just very friendly in general! This is our favorite sushi place in town. Our top pick is the Hiro Roll, lobster tempura, crab meat, avocado, cucumber, topped with tuna.

The staff were friendly and relatively accommodating when we placed a takeout order. I got the hibachi salmon, and it was a bit disappointing. With celiac disease I cannot ingest regular soy sauce, as it makes me very sick. To get around this, Hiro provided me with completed unseasoned salmon and steamed veggies with rice. Honestly, if I'd have known they didn't have gf soy sauce or condiments to add to it I'd have just not dined here. I can make the basics at home, and would have just saved my money. My wife got some sushi that was okay. We can also make better sushi at home. Overall if you don't have a gluten issue then this place is a decent 2/3 dollar sign level bordering on $$$ for the higher expenses. But you are ordering sushi in the middle of the desert. The place was relatively busy and seemed clean/well-maintained when we picked up the order. read more

It's Chinese or Korean trying to be Japanese and while it was not horrible, I didn't find it very good. The family had teriyaki dishes and that was just okay. Me and hubby had sushi and soup. The fish portions were decent but it all was just meh. I'll not come back. read more

Terrible food with good service. Definitely would never return. Ramen noodles with chicken & vegetables had boiled cubed chicken and the only vegetables were cabbage & green onions. Hibachi chicken dish was rubbery/over cooked chicken. Definitely overpriced considering the lack of quality. Very underwhelmed with the appearance and taste of the food. A complete waste of money. A pleasant surprise when we were looking for an early dinner when we were passing through. Agedashi tofu, octopus balls, and steamed dumplings were really good. The Montrose Roll was like a full meal, but not what I would call sushi. Too many sauces and flavors obscured the taste of the fish inside. Certainly would go back if I am in the area. read more

This place unfortunately let me down. I ordered a Hori roll without avocado ($16) and a Spider roll without avocado ($14). The Positives: Very friendly staff, very welcoming, and quick to serve you. It was quite quiet on this day that I attended (a Monday 6pm). There was maybe four or five pair of people at one time. The place was not at all packed. The sushi presentation was nice but wouldn't stay that way for long. The Octopus nigiri was priced well. The Negatives: In my opinion the sushi was less than average. Very bland and It wasn't rolled very tight and kept falling apart as I tried to eat it. The tempura in both rolls seem to be a little overcooked but especially the roll that contained lobster tempura. Oh did I mention that the sushi was very expensive compared to several other places i have gone? The taste unfortunately, it wasn't very tasteful at all. I actually lost the urge to finish my rolls, which is very unlike me. I decided to order Shrimp Ramen to go and even that wasn't pleasant to me. To sum this all up, though the people were awesome and friendly, I wouldn't refer Hori to any when in Montrose. read more

My family and I decided to try a new place this trip to Montrose. Hiro did not disappoint. The food tasted amazing and the service was amazing. The older gentleman is so adorable and very friendly. Being from SoCal we have lots of great sushi restaurants everywhere we go. I am also Japanese, so when I say this place is good and worth a try believe me it's good. The shrimp and veggies tempura was great crispy batter and the tentsuyu (tempura dipping sauce) was yummy. My daughter ordered the tempura udon. Udon noodles are her favorite. The soup tasted great it was just a tad sweeter than I normal have at home. Sushi was fresh, the Gyoza are my kid's favorite as well. Great job Hiro!! Pretty good sushi for Montrose, a small town in the middle of Colorado! The sushi is not mind-blowing, but it'll satisfy that need-for-sushi urge when the mods strikes. I think the sushi could be more flavorful, but the rolls are good sized and pretty. There's not much of a sushi bar. In fact, I would have preferred sitting in front of the sushi chef but didn't see him until I began my salad, as he's kind of hidden in the back. Would be great to have him front and center...or at least as present as the big TV and bar is. I also had the Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura. It was fine. The batter wasn't too heavy handed, which can be the case some places. My beef with it, is there didn't seem to be a bigger variety of veggies. Two small onion rings, two small pieces of broccoli, two sweet potatoes, and two small zucchini slices. No carrots (what the heck!), peppers, eggplants, etc. for the price, I expected a little more. Our first visit here and we will definitely be back! We ordered the Bento Boxes. All Food was amazing and the sushi was very fresh. The Bento Boxes have a sushi roll, chiice of dumplings or spring roll, steamed rice, choice of entree (The teriyaki chicken is very good), soup and salad. You know, we live in sort of a cultural food desert here on the Western Slope. So while I would rate this place as just okay, I am profoundly grateful for their basic rolls and nigiri, and sashimi. I've tried most of their dishes, and anything that wasn't fish was average at best. The owner and staff are kind, and are trying their best to enforce social distancing in an area that would prefer to ignore the reality of a global pandemic. Quality seems good but the lady in the back needs some lessons on how to "roll" the rolls. They always come out a mess. Watch yourself when you go to dunk in your soy sauce. They fall apart very easily. The knori isn't even wrapped tight enough to go all the way around the roll. But friendly service and nice atmosphere. read more
