First time trying this place and I will def be back! I got to go as I am traveling and wanted to eat in my hotel room. I was skeptical that everything would be there but it was! The prime rib was super tender and cooked perfectly! Salad was good and bread was delish and given with plenty of butter! I didn't realize it came with a small dessert so that was a nice surprise! Ted Nelson's is clearly a local favorite, so we had to pay a visit. We walked in on a Friday night, only to be greeted by Ted himself, manning the host podium. A half hour later, we were seated at a table in their covered patio area. Service was great, very attentive staff that treated us well! Food had some hiccups though. The shrimp bisque that came with our order was a bit thin, and light on shrimp (one of our two bowls didn't have any shrimp at all). We each ordered a sirloin, and each came out a bit overcooked. My medium rare came out medium (pictured), and a medium came out medium well. Maybe the grill was running too hot toward the end of their service. Still, the meat itself was good, and the appetizer was pretty tasty. We settled for the stuffed mushrooms because they ran out of sirloin by the time we were seated. Despite a few hiccups, still a nice place to go in this area if you need to scratch that steak itch. read more

The food was great but very small portions and very expensive. Service was okay. Ambiance is horrible, you may as well be sitting in a barn.

We had heard Ted sold this once fabulous restaurant, & wanted to see if it was still as good as ever. Sadly, we were very disappointed. Ambiance was lacking, with the lights turned up so bright, we felt like we were being interrogated! 4 out of 4 meals were subpar, with the chicken fried chicken & chicken fried steak both being tough & basically inedible. Even the Prime Rib wasn't good. Server seemed very rushed & poorly trained, even though they weren't busy. Dinners arrived before salads were finished, and the server didn't know who ordered what. Without Ted there, visiting each and every table, assuring that everyone was happy, I'm afraid the level of both food and service will continue to go down hill. It's so sad, as Montrose has lost one of the best restauranteurs they ever had- for decades! We can only hope they will step it up & do better. read more

Tonight had the opportunity to visit Ted Nelson's Steakhouse. It is recommended to call for reservations but we were able to get right in. The service was fantastic. The serving team made sure our drinks were always full and were very kind. We started our meal with the Prime Rib Crostini. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and the subtle hint from the bleu cheese just enhanced the flavor of the dish (and I don't like bleu cheese). For my entree I had the 8 oz sirloin dinner. It comes with soup or salad, yep I chose to do a salad, choice of potato and veggies. The steak is marinated in some sauce as when I was eating the steak I noticed a sweet taste. I couldn't put my finger on what the flavor was but it made the steak tender and delicious. Don't fill up on appetizers and dinner as the meal also comes with a complimentary dessert. The desert is a small little sponge cake but it is just the right amount of desert to calm your sweet tooth. Definitely stop in for some great steak and fantastic service read more

We called ahead to make reservations which got us seated immediately. The restaurant is squeaky clean. No smudges on the glass or cobwebs on the lights. Our hostess and waitstaff were super sweet ... and our drink order was taken. Which reminds me to say, we really appreciated the way all the staff worked together, having each other's backs. That made us feel as though we're important to them. We had already picked out the eggplant roll ups for our appetizer, so we ordered it too. And I'm so glad we did -- I'd like to eat those again soon. This was served with complimentary freshly baked bread, yummy. Our waitstaff took our meal order after our drinks were delivered (which were excellent). My gosh, our steaks were cooked to perfection. Our salads were fresh, my mashed potatoes were really homemade, and the vegetables alongside everything were amazing. Then surprise, we had a small complimentary serving of sponge cake and vanilla ice cream. It was just the right amount and such a delectable treat. Just stayed one night in town and found this place close to our AirBnb. I saw it on multiple lists and recommended pages so figured let's give it a try. Definitely seemed like a local spot which I always love supporting vs a chain. I was actually pleasantly surprised with how much I loved it! I had lower expectations but overall, we really enjoyed our meals. Definitely good portion size for the price which doesn't st all, but it was hot and tasty too. Service was friendly even with it being a busy night and full tables. Inside vibes were fine but nothing special or anything to note. My steak wasn't the best or highest quality, but it was definitely tasty still. Also the fries were hand cut, hot and fresh. The veggies were fine but nothing to write home about. Not sure when or if I'll ever be in the area again, but I would recommend it if it's the type of food you're looking for! read more

If you are in Montrose and looking for a good steak dinner, head here. No contest. We were on a weekend away and wanted a special dinner. Ted Nelson's did not disappoint. I opted for the marinated 8oz sirloin, medium. I like some pink. My husband had the prime rib. Both were done to perfection. The salad came out first. So many places have skimped on salads but this had carrot, cucumber, red onion, tomato and croutons over mixed greens. It was crisp and refreshing. The bread was a small, warm loaf of crusty bread served with butter. Delicious. Our dinners had mixed vegetables including broccoli, zucchini, peppers, onions and green beans. It was a hearty portion. We both got baked potato. I just have to have baked potato with a good steak. It came with butter and topped with cheese and scallions. The steak melted away with each bite. Mine had a marinade that complimented the meat so well. I tried some of my husband's prime rib and it was like butter! His was served with au jus and horseradish sauce. I snuck a taste of both and they were tasty. Ted himself was roaming about the restaurant, checking in with diners to make sure they were enjoying their experience. That is someone who put his name on something he is proud of and makes sure it continues to meet his standards. At the end of our meal we were too full to order dessert. Mom hosted seven family members for dinner tonight. This restaurant was the most popular choice, so here we are. For a steakhouse, it's a little rough around the edges - the decor isn't going to win any awards but what it lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in its menu. Beef forward, but a good mix of seafood and poultry, too. Four of us had some form of seafood dish: scampi, seafood cannelloni, baked stuffed salmon, and simply grilled salmon. Chicken fried steak, rib-eye, and I can't recall the last dish, but everyone appears to love their meal judging from what was left on plates. A couple of red wine options (Zinfandel and a Cabernet Sauvignon) for the 5 wine drinkers were enjoyed. Dessert consisted of mini carrot cake bites, just enough after a filling meal. We all shared a couple of orders of the bruschetta, which, in my opinion, was delicious and fresh too. I could have eaten a plate of it on my own. Lots of gab and laughs and Pam was a gem for putting up with us. For a Wednesday night, it was very crowded, so I imagine Friday and Saturday nights are equally busy if not busier. We were looking for a good steak house and heard about Ted's. Oh my goodness what a treat! Ted sat us as soon as we walked through the door. Our waitress was prompt and friendly. My husband ordered the stuffed salmon which was out of this world. I ordered the prime rib which was cooked PERFECT and so delicious. The baked potato was yummy as well. The only complaint I have is the dressing for the salads was not very good. They weren't horrible but they were runny and the bleu cheese didn't have any bleu cheese chunks. Dinner was fabulous though. As a treat our waitress brought us a little piece of cake. Perfect way to finish a delicious meal. If we come back to Montrose Ted's Steakhouse is our first stop. Great, straight-forward steakhouse. My husband's sirloin was delicious. My boys loved their prime rib and ribeye, although the bread served at the start may have been their most favorite part of the meal. I had the special, which was a seafood pasta dish and it was very good. However, after trying everyone else's steaks I realized I should have gotten a steak too. My bf was craving steak and we had choices galore at Ted Nelson's! We finally decided on: - Prime rib 14 oz, medium rare ($38): Juicy and super tender. 4/5 - Ribeye, medium rare ($38): Medium, more than medium rare but still tender and had a perfect char on the outside. 3.5/5 - Chicken tortellini soup: A chicken noodle soup subbing the noodle with tortellini. 3/5 - Salad: Fresh and crisp. Lots of care went into the mandolin sliced veggies. 3.5/5 - Mashed potatoes: No gravy with these, but they didn't need any. There were little bits of chives mixed in which I enjoyed! 3.5/5 - Pasta side with marinara: The marinara had a nice zing to it. Pasta cooked well. 3/5 - Veggies: So overcooked they were basically a pile of mush. 1/5 Cute little bite sized complimentary Oreo cheesecake. Perfect for that sweet morsel you crave after a huge savory meal, but don't have the stomach space for anything more. Megan was our server and she was on it! Utterly shocking!!!!! We were just passing through on a trip. Hands down best restaurant meal this year, maybe 2 years! We had the prime rib blue cheese bruschetta. Perfectly cooked, tender and flavorful. Au jus on point! Then a lobster tail for dinner. Not rubbery, actually cooked to perfection, and the scampi sauce on the side was so flavorful. I rarely leave reviews. I can only say this was an absolute joy, an absolute highlight to our brief visit. Service was terrific. We were coming in from out of town and wanted a hearty meal before settling into a motel for the night. The reviews of Ted Nelson's Steakhouse looked great, so we decided to go for an early dinner. The restaurant is located in an unlikely place, off the main street and with its entrance facing the parking lot, away from the main street. (There's another parking lot closer to Main St). We were surprised to see a fairly full customer parking lot on a Monday afternoon around 5 pm (the restaurant opens at 4). We were also surprised to see a notice on the door saying reservations were recommended. We felt fortunate to be able to walk in and be seated immediately. There are 2 indoor seating areas, one at the entrance level and another down near the kitchen...which is where we were. The atmosphere in this lower space felt pretty barren. Service was wonderful, particularly given covid times. Our menu conveniently served as our placemat. I had a draft IPA and my husband had wine. Bread and butter followed, then lovely salads with dressing on the side. We ordered prime rib sandwich, which included the salad and a potato, and grilled chicken breast with blackening seasoning, which came with salad, side veggie and potato. We chose french fries. The chicken portion was pretty small, but perfectly cooked and tasty. The prime rib was flavorless. Perhaps this explains why 3 containers of flavoring (jus, mayo, and horseradish sauce) accompanied the dish. The fries were perfect and portion size for these good. After we finished our meals, small complimentary pieces of cake were served. Pricing was reasonable for what we ordered. The beef dishes must be huge, as (to us) pricing appeared pretty high. Coincidentally, we noticed quite a few older folks taking home leftovers. We wish the restaurant offered smaller portions of steak for out-of-town visitors who can't deal with leftovers. read more
