Hotel itself was okay, the guy at front desk is genuinely so nosy & inconsiderate. We arrived 12 A.M. at night from a four-hour drive just to find out that this hotel is in fact NOT pet friendly at ALL (my mom was the one who booked it, but I can see why she was blindsided, because some sites do indicate that this hotel is "pet friendly"). They only allow dogs with an additional cost (around $40) and you cannot leave them unattended... who is trying to bring their dogs around the entirety of their vacation...? read more

EV charging available right behind room 108 on Eddie St costing $1 session fee to start & $.20 per kwh! It says 7.3 kW capability, but my Solterra charging at 6.8kW. The rooms: gorgeous: they have historic artifacts all over the place and there's a gold rush era vibe here. Indeed their pet friendly and there's a park close by where you can walk your little furry fuzzbutt. I love a child where you can actually park right in front of your room and you don't have to ride elevators or go up numerous lights and stairs carrying everything because I feel like sometimes you get worn out playing all day and then you get to your hotel and it's even more struggle so having the car 10 feet from the door is one of my favorite things about hotels like this. The view is pretty killer: you can see Jobs Peak from Eddy St and that is one of the most picturesque sites you can have in this town. It is snow covered even in the early summer and reminds you that Tahoe and Kirkwood are just around half an hour drive away. When the hotels in Tahoe are full, this is a good back up location to come stay. Try to make it out to Topaz Lake if you can. I found the staff here to be friendly and I had to interact with them several times because the key card will immediately get degaussed if it comes anywhere near your phone. I'm guessing it's the MagSafe feature of the iPhone that is erasing the hotel card but I can tell you I've erased three and I've only been here 15 hours! So that's why I don't give it. Five stars is that they really need to come up with the way that you can carry both your hotel room key and your iPhone in the same pocket I think. I had a reservation at the Historian Inn for May 21, booked with 13,400 American Airlines points. The night before, my husband was hospitalized with a serious head injury. I called the hotel early the morning of the reservation at around 6 AM, left a voicemail, and later spoke with Sean, who was understanding but said, he would allow a reschedule or if the booking agent allowed I could get a refund of points, but that I had to go through the booking agent to make that cancellation, as he could not do anything on his end until I spoke to them first and they would have to do the cancellation and request for refund directly to him. I spoke with the booking agent who told me I could cancel and get a refund with my doctor's note and that she'd contact the hotel for approval. After a long hold, she came back saying Sean refused the refund--and since the reservation had now been canceled by the booking agent, Sean would not allow it to be reinstated, refunded or rescheduled. I lost all my points despite following every instruction Sean gave me including offering documentation. I've written to the general manager twice and received no response. The lack of compassion and basic communication is appalling. I would not recommend booking here. read more

August 1st - 4th Rm 224. We have stayed here for many years in a row while visiting my in-laws. It's always had issues but nothing that was a deal breaker and it was great because it was close to family and the antique store. There was almost always a light bulb out somewhere in the room, but the best example is the ice machine has been broken for at least 2.5 years but the owners refuse to replace it (per the manager). This year though was the worst. The toilet wouldn't flush. Turns out the chain to the handle was broken. When I told the desk, I was told there were no maintenance staff on site and asked me to "make it work" until morning. My wife, who is a wizard at quick fixes used a bread tie to attach the chain to the handle. Next up, the toilet lid was for a round toilet on an oval bowl. When you sit down, your legs were touching porcelain. When I told the desk, I was informed "it's been that way for awhile. We are new management and haven't got to it yet." That is just GROSS, especially for the women. Several of the floor planks had large gaps like they were cut wrong or had shrunk a lot. This was a minor issue considering the other issues but still not acceptable. Staff were fine, but not overly concerned with our issues or could offer any tangible solutions. There just doesn't seem to be any pride in the facility or care from the owners. I always like to say at least one good thing. There are two FREE Charge Point EV charging stations on the street next to the hotel. That was nice but hardly a counter to the other issues. This place is HORRIBLE! The lady working the front desk later in the day is totally rude and also the dude working the desk in the morning is even worse. This was our go-to hotel, but definitely not any longer. The rooms are falling apart, hard bed and lousy staff. Pricing changes as soon as you arrive. Much better accommodations elsewhere. It's no wonder there were only 2 other cars in the parking lot during our stay. read more

Conveniently located, access to local dining, shops and casino. I booked through Booking.com. Facility as described and matched the photos. Nice decor in lobby and sitting area where continental breakfast is served. Local artists water color prints and photographs on display and for sale. I purchased a framed water color of two stallions from the Pine Nuts Range Herd. Friendly, professional, hospitable staff. So friendly, helpful...exceptional customer service. This was huge part of this rating, the couple (and their son) were the sweetest. Room as described, huge very comfortable king non smoking bed. Nice decor including desk, big screen, cool bathroom countertops. Older facility but renovated. Looks just like photos. Super quiet, close to parking, EV charging station on street adjacent to parking lot. Plenty of parking spaces with easy stair access. The drapes/curtains are shabby, torn with binder clips to keep closed and reduce light. This was noted in a recent review by another customer. Drapes are beyond repair, need to be replaced. Toilet water pressure is weak, not much pressure. I'd stay here again based upon my stay, the excellent customer service, location and comfort of bed and overall room. But...the curtains. read more

Not historic. The brick and stonework are just veneer on a modern building, so I was disappointed that the website wasn't more transparent about that. It's like casino-style fake authenticity, so if you're into that vibe, you might like it! If you like actual historic things, the buildings nearby are legit old and there are cool historic markers in the neighborhood. It's nice for a walk, and the view from the hotel balcony is fantastic! That was the best part for me- sitting on the balcony that overlooks the mountains and historic district. That side is pretty noisy, so if highway noise bothers you, stay in the bigger rooms on the other wing, and walk to the shared balcony for the view. The room was really big, quiet, and good room darkening curtains. The floor needed mopping and the furniture and decor to the room were again -not historic, just imitation. But the counter and bed headboard was made from beautiful thick old slabs of wood, so that was pretty great, as were some historic photos. Both front-desk guys were friendly and efficient. It's really just a motel though, and you could do better for the price. read more

I'm sorry I can't recommend this Hotel. We stayed 2 nights. The room wasn't nice for the price. Poor Lighting / Light bulbs need replacement through out the room. TV didn't have a menu to find shows. Doorknob in backwards in the bathroom so when you open it, hits your arm. ROOM 103. Advertised free donuts and Coffee never had any donuts because they said that they didn't get a delivery for 2 days but there's a couple of large Grocery stores, Raleys and Smith not far from the hotel they could have picked up some. Front desk guy was rude in the morning. Also no ice machine working and it was very hot time of the year. read more

You make your reservation agreeing to a $20 pet fee, receive confirmation via email with the $20 pet fee and then when you get there they won't let you get your room unless you pay $40!!! What a scam and front desk agent is rude and totally unprofessional!! The toilet seat in the bathroom has half the finish scrapped off of it, there is nothing but a dirt/mud patch directly out the front door. Don't waste your money here!! BEWARE! This hotel is NOT pet friendly. First of all its $40 per night for a 17 lb. dog (When we booked it was supposed to be $20). Also, you can't leave a pet in the room without you, even if they are in a crate. This makes sense for a 1 night stop. But, who goes somewhere for 3 days and never leaves the hotel? We were there for a wedding. We ended up having to hire a dog sitter (Rover.com Amazing but $165) so we could all attend the wedding. And, we missed out on several meals and activities with other wedding guests. Add to that, the fact that the manager was awful. We witnessed more than one nasty interaction between him and the cleaning lady, who was so sweet. He was annoyed that we wanted maid service the one day we could get it (when the dogs were with the sitter). The hotel itself was okay, nothing to brag about. If you never need anything and don't bring a dog, I'm sure it's fine. But, I would NEVER give them more of my money. read more

The Historian Inn is a good place to stay while in Gardnerville, but not great. As others have commented, the people that work here are extremely nice and helpful. The beds were comfortable, the shower was super, and the nearby park was great for my dog. Among the criticisms, a broken light fixture next to the bed. A broken ice machine with no substitute other than suggesting to go to the nearby gas station to buy ice, and the extremely expensive surcharge for pets. $22 per pet per day. Seems extreme. The so-called "breakfast" was simply coffee and donuts. Both delicious, but not really breakfast. read more

We have stayed here 4 times within the past year. The Manager Daryl and Ammy were great. The rooms are not fancy but very comfortable. The customer service has always been great. Where do I start. From the beginning. Before I even booked and at time of confirmation I specifically asked for a clean and quiet space. I was particularly repeating myself so when I checked in there would be a note on file. First thoughts were they need to get the lights fixed. Bulbs out and first thing you see from the street. It needs paint and some simple TLC. I rolled into the parking lot after a 12 hour drive and immediately got motel vibe. Nice enough people but don't want to walk into a lobby with a child and dog behind the counter with the manager. Family business or not. No elevators so I took my luggage up slowly and when I opened the door it was dark hot and smelly. Opened the curtains and walked to the nightstand to turn on the lights ( it was better dark). It was dusty as if they hadn't had a guest in there for a while. Towards the back was the bathroom so I went to wash my hands to only get the light fixture to fall on the dirty counters looking into a dirty mirror. Thankful it missed me. A little upset at this point I reluctantly showered (I brought my own towel, blanket and pillow) the luxury of driving allowed me to overpack. In any case I knew I was SOL (shit out of luck ) sold out around town ?!? Some music festival. I made the best I've what I had and cleaned up and removed things I wasn't going to use. Disinfected I was feeling better. Then I see these laminated papers asking not to use the towels to clean the space and call maintenance ( has this happened before that you have to state it and print it and laminate it?!? Thank you for your corporation ( hahahahaha I knew exactly what I was dealing with hahahaha) at check out I asked for my statement and was followed with I can't provide you that as I don't have access to that part ) a piece of paper with the total. WTF kind of place can't provide you with a receipt ?? Tax? Breakdown ? The people that run the hotel are very nice and accommodating. Location is good, expect noise if your room fronts Hwy 395. The room we stayed in was dingey and a little rough. Definitely time for some freshening up, including new paint, etc. Bed was clean, but bathroom was funky at best! Time for a remodel and this place would be really cool. read more

I tried posting with ZERO stars, because this is what they deserve. Yelp should fix this.. My parents lived in Gardnerville, NV. My mother passed away last year and because of Covid, her service was delayed from February to June. The week before the service, the governor there cancelled all gatherings so the service was cancelled. I had a room reserved and paid for one of two nights when I booked. I called to cancel and they were pleasant and said the charge would be reversed. That never happened. I called for months, sometimes daily and was told messages were taken, someone would call me back, refund me, etc, but I was ignored and lied to. I finally got ahold of the new owner, Berzchete Thornton, when I learned that my father is now dying and I wanted The Historian to honor the debt and/or give me a room for when I came to say goodbye. The new owner said she would take care of it, and then emailed me a screenshot of them refunding me. It was not from the bank or credit processing system, it was from their internal business computer system. My bank has verified twice now that I never got my money back. I told the new owner this, asked for the credit card processing company verification of returned funds (I do this for a living, so I know how it works), and she has completely ghosted me. So we stayed at the Carson Valley Inn instead, but this company owes me $134.70 and I will post this everywhere, including the BBB. They are dishonest and bad business people. Even with both my parents passed, I still have family there and friends, but I'll never stay there or modify this review until they make it right. read more

We found this place on the Hotel Tonight app. What we loved: 1. They are super dog friendly. We have 3 dogs so we usually have a hard time finding a place that will allow them to stay in the room, and if we do they usually charge per pet per night. This place welcomed our babies with excitement and even gave them gift baskets with a blanket, dog bowl, treats, and toys! And guess what!?!?! No fee! Just a refundable cleaning deposit. 2. The rooms were clean. They smelled clean even. Not musty and damp like most "pet friendly" rooms. There are hardwood floors instead of carpet, genius! 3. The staff were so sweet and welcoming. 4. There is a park to walk your dog right across the street. 5. There is a casino and 2 great reaturaunts close by. What we didn't love: 1. No pool or spa. Bummer. 2. No breakfast. The rooms are large with several seating options. There are bathtubs with lots of leg room. It was quiet with an back parking lot. The staff was great and gave me great tips on where to go and how to get there. But when I came down in the morning for coffee, the owner was sprawled on the couch fast asleep and the entire lobby smelled quite strongly of body odor. There was no coffee or breakfast ready. This happened twice. Although the second time the body odor was not as noticeable. So much for quiet elegance. read more

Clean rooms, welcoming pet policy, great WiFi, absolutely no smoking, reasonable prices (very!) and directly across the street from the JT Bar and fifty yards from the Overland. The staff, though: super welcoming and accommodating....especially Christie, who hunted the whole hotel for a mini of my wife's favorite tequila for our anniversary. You can't do better anywhere near Gardnerville, especially if you travel with pets. read more

Surprised to find that the rooms were bigger and bed was more comfortable than what we had in Idaho ...both rooms and front lobby have a nice decor about them. Great place to stop to rest on our way home after a stressful time. Nice casino across the street Charles and his wife were so friendly and outgoing.. It was dark at the end of my drive from Idaho and this had been my destination. I pulled my fairly new Volvo wagon into their parking and noted very few other cars. The Caldor fire was burning and it was the day before all the roads to South Lake Tahoe were CLOSED. Looking like I'd been on a weeklong cattle drive I walked my dog around the block to relieve himself and found my way to the desk- greeted by an automaton of an evening clerk behind a tall desk in a faux fancy environment, holding my 6 lb service animal in my arm so he could clearly read his ID jacket.. He would not budge on the price. He said every hotel in town was booked but let me use their internet to research. I sat in a chair in their big city lobby and my dog sat beside me. I found a reduced rate on a hotel app, walked to the desk and showed him. "You can't have that room!" he said, flat faced and firmly. I'd been traveling for 6 weeks staying in motels and with friends and family across the northern United States. My dog is perfectly trained. Never an accident. This clerk, to my "why not?" Said. You have a dog. Then they accused my dog, who jumped up WITH me, from the chair, of peeing on their carpet. Brush your hair and teeth before you enter and don't expect any bargain rate in this big-town fancy motel. Overbooked in the middle of a friggin' fire and not open to giving a woman traveler a posted rate for a week night. I'd never recommend them because their humanity quotient does t exist. read more

Do not trust this hotel with anything. I originally made a call to this hotel and reserved a room. I never got an email or a confirmation or anything. After driving up to Lake Tahoe via highway 88 in heavy snow it looked like we weren't going to make it. I called the lady and explain to her I had 3 Toddlers and I wanted to see what could be done if the roads were closed. The lady was extremely unprofessional and could not assist me at all. She couldn't confirm that I had a reservation, she couldn't find my name and told me that she would call me back. So highway 88 turns out was closed. We began the long Trek up going back down the mountain in heavy snow with my 3 toddlers hungry and tired. I called her back to see what my options were in the event Highway 50 was also closed. She told me that she would call me back and that there was no manager to assist. I then called her back a second time to see if there was any update. Again she couldn't help me. Ask yourself is this the kind of Hotel you want to stay in? Just wait it gets better. I called her back a third time and told her that I needed to stay in a different Hotel. I had her triple check to make sure she could not find my reservation she couldn't find my name and she couldn't find my credit card number. I assumed that they were competent enough to do this. I was wrong. 2 Days Later I have a $680 charge on my credit card that is clearly fraudulent. I called them and they told me that they had to charge me for the room and 2 more nights along with the cancellation charge. What kind of business does this? I never got a call from them. I never got an email or anything saying, "hey we found your card, do you need the room." Or "hi, turns out you do have a reservation and you need to show up." Instead they fraudulently charged me $680. This has put a significant strain on my family and my toddlers as we are still in Tahoe. You would be better off taking your money and lighting it on fire then trusting these people. They are incompetent and downright stupid at best. They are more likely frauds, thieves and cheats however. DO NOT TRUST THIS PLACE. THEY CHARGED ME 700 DOLLARS AND NEVER HAD THE COMMON COURTESY TO CALL ME, HAVE ME SIGN ANYTHING OR CONFIRM MY RESERVATION. sad thing is, my credit card company has already taken the funds back. This place is great if you have dogs! They provide a care basket with blankets and goodies for your furry pals. No carpet so no need to worry about pet stains. Staff is super friendly and check-in was fast and easy. They have a coffee maker, microwave and mini fridge in your room. The beds were comfortable. There is a short trail system to walk on that starts within a couple blocks of here, complete with poop bag stations. Restaurants, pubs, cafes, casino, bakery are all within walking distance. The air-conditioner and fart fan were loud, but keep in mind this place is "historical". WiFi was fast enough to allow us to stream movies. We would stay here again! I would of gave this place more stars (for it being a cute hotel), but I had an absolute nightmare of a visit with the staff (Cara). It just kept getting worse and worse. The place is def cute, but I would say they have a staff training problem and generally they are being cheap on the little details. More on that later. So I booked the place on Expedia 3 days before Valentines Day. I was all confirmed on Expedia and with the hotel. Me and my girlfriend get their on valentines day weekend for our first anniversary and they say they oversold and my 2 night stay is not going to happen. "Cara" was working. She DOES NOT belong in hospitality. She has absolutely no customer service skills what so ever and didn't look happy working at all. She basically said too bad, I can't help you with our mistake, please leave. She was def a woman of few words. After a bit of coaxing she said we could stay Friday night but that was it. I didn't get a good feeling from her at all, but against my better judgment me and the GF agreed. We'd been driving hours and just wanted to relax. We asked her if she had any advice on things to do in the area or places to eat. She didn't have much to say. The only thing she offered was Taco Bell was just down the way. WOW. She didn't even offer to show us the package of free visitor map's on the counter that visitor bureaus give out to get people acquainted with the area when they arrive in a new town. Nor did she apologize for overbooking the hotel. She didn't even offer to help us find a different hotel or give any advice on potential hotels to book with. We were the only ones in the office, so it wasn't like she was busy... So we unload our car and walk up to the second floor. We notice the cement stairs are cracked where the support is. We could feel the give. It was scary walking up. I'll post pics. Got in the room. It looked cute. Nice country feel, fridge, microwave, free wifi, bed felt very nice and sheets were nice. The girlfriend pulled back the sheets and found multiple long hairs on the sheets as well as short curly hairs ( I am assuming pubic hairs) on the pillows. BARF... She smelled the pillows and it smelled like Body Odor. Their flyer says they only wash the sheets every 3 days. I guess we got 3 different people BO on our pillows plus some pubic hair! You could tell the pillows were super old. They were "flat" and had sweat stains. They advertise "good for you amenities" on their hotel flyer. This basically means they recycle the soaps and shampoos. Our half used bottle of lotion in the room was def used by a previous guest (cheap). They have those large wall mounted shampoo/conditioner pump bottles in the shower that could be tampered with by a previous guest. . I'm not a fan of those at all. Someone could put something in then. Totally a safety hazard. They only gave us one bar soap. So no soap for the shower and sink. Gross & cheap. Our room had cobwebs in it. The door molding had dust all over it. Part of the shower nozzle had fallen off. The cleaning crew would have just needed to push it back on, but they missed it. The shower did have good water pressure but would have loved one of those ones where you could have held the shower in your hand. Something that should be in a hotel label "luxury" and upscale. So we needed to find a hotel for Saturday. We called expedia to tell them what happened. Expdia customer support is lacking as it's outsourced to another country. We told them the hotel oversold and we had no room to stay in. They called the hotel and spoke to Cara. First Cara told Expedia she had no record of our reservation on the Expedia system, then she said the computers were down, then after that she told expedia to call he manager in the morning she doesn't want to deal with it. In the middle of this I get disconnected by expedia customer service. I call back and speak to a manager with Expedia. Explain the situation. They call the hotel, because the previous Expedia rep didn't put in any notes. The Expedia Manager says Cara won't tell her anything about the situation. Expedia ended up getting me hooked up with a room for Saturday and paid the difference between Historian inns rate and the new spot. Kudos for them! But I did spend 4 hours on the phone with Expedia between the two calls I made to get this resolved. So time for night night. Friday night the parking lot was extremely loud and the room next to us was having a party. Techno music pounded into the wee hours of the mourning. So we didn't get much sleep. Not a great night. So we get up in the morning for our luxury breakfast. The only thing offered was hot oatmeal. We got our oatmeal. It was barely lukewarm. No milk, no juice, only thing you got was oatmeal. Everything else was an up charge. I spoke to the manager in the morning about the situation. The only thing she said was that doesn't sound like Cara at all. No apology, no nothing. read more

We had a great experience for a one night stay here while in town shopping. Accommodations were very clean, dog friendly, lots of great restaurants and pubs walking distance. We have dogs and there were lots of places to walk the dogs nearby for exercise. DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL. Any previous positive reviews should be ignored as this hotel is now under new ownership/management. I understand that it used to be a good hotel, however, under the new management there has been a sharp decline. I went to this hotel because my father was terminally ill. Immediately, upon my arrival (Day 1) the maid ripped me off. I barely got out of my room, went to my car and realized I forgot something. The maid was already in my room. I realized a few hours later that she had taken a number of items. I filed a police report which I had to keep updating as I found more items missing. I did not allow them to clean my room the entire five days that I was there and took all valuables with me. My things were safer in my car, than in the room. The staff lied to me and told me this maid had good references, had worked there for a while and they never had any complaints. That was a complete lie. I found out that this maid had only worked there three days and the staff had suspicions about this girl and apparently her boyfriend. They thought they might be working as a team and they were not cleaning the rooms just changing towels and helping themselves to whatever they wanted. I had to deal with crappy service and thoughtless staff until my father passed away (only a couple of days). I had more important things to focus on. After my father passed away, I checked out of the hotel and was very surprised that they offered nothing to compensate me for such a horrible experience. The items that were stolen totaled approximately $500. I had to call the police three separate times and file a police report which I had to keep updating while I was dealing with my father's illness and subsequent abrupt death. I cleaned my own room the entire time that I was there. When I spoke with the owner's son after I checked out of this nightmare, (this inexperienced child who is apparently is running the place now), he told me I had to prove that my stuff was stolen before they can do anything to compensate me. What an ignorant and naive businessman. He has no idea the way that customers should be treated. He is short sighted, cheap and completely careless about the staff he chooses to allow to serve the people that pay good money to stay at his hotel. I will never go there again. I advise strongly against this hotel. Do not bring any valuables!!!!! Do not expect to be treated fairly and do not expect them to be professional. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AT THIS AWFUL PLACE. read more

My first impression when I walked into the Historian Inn was like walking into a Hallmark Christmas setting. The owners greeted us and were very welcoming. The lobby and breakfast area were decorated with Christmas decor and it smelled like fresh gingerbread. The room was recently renovated and was perfect. Clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was good and the attached bakery had delicious treats. I highly recommend staying at Historian Inn. Shop and Stay local. read more

5 stars! My brother in law kept telling us we spent too much money on our hotel room, but every dollar we spent was well worth it! The lady who took our reservation didn't notate we need a dog friendly room, but the man at the front desk who checked us in was able to accommodate us. Our room was beautiful and clean. Loved the inter design that was done in our room and the lobby. Beds were so comfortable and loved that the blankets were thick, warm, and fluffy, not like your typical hotel blankets. Hot baked goods from the bakery next door was an expected (and delicious!) continental breakfast! Wish our visit longer just so we could stay a few more nights. Would recommend that everyone stay here! read more

Came here alone with my 5 year old son and I had a few initial issues however the staff was extremely helpful and available even at late hours which was so great. It's a nice place in the heart of town and overall a good place to stay. Clean and well staffed. I appreciated that all my issues were taken care of timely and professionally within minutes. Old! And dirty. Clumps of hair in bed. Toenail clippings. Dirty, dirty floors and nasty surfaces all around. Black grout. Toilet doesn't flush on its own. Do not try making coffee. Front desk weirdos. They don't mop. Housekeepers use a yellow leaf blower in the rooms to disperse the crud. Uncomfortable bed. Stay here if you want to wake up with a back ache. Everything is old! We stayed at the Historian Inn during memorial day weekend after visiting the Bodie Ghost Town. Very nice rooms, the beds were extremely comfortable. The have a mini fridge, coffee maker and microwave. The rooms were a decent size and the bathroom/shower was standard. The complimentary breakfast that is offered is a yogurt parfait or oatmeal with coffee or tea. Everything else you buy. I bought the kids izzie drinks and it was 550...wow! They also don't offer free toiletries if you forget. Beware! I stopped my kids before they tore into any snacks or drinks.They have snacks and drinks ( alcohol, too) in the rooms with a price list. There are signs that state the price of the robes, coffee mugs, wine glasses. I would stay again but maybe look for a better price on it. $159 is steep but the holiday had a play in that I'm sure. read more
