I've had this place on my list for awhile and finally got the chance to go! It's the oldest retail establishment in Oregon. It has a great outdoor deck to eat on or a few tables inside. We are so glad we got to stop by the Butteville store. Everyone working here is very friendly & welcoming. You get to learn about this historic town and check out the Willamette river for a short walk after your meal. We ordered: Grilled cheese Joe Wolf Tomato Bisque Soup Marionberry icecream Cup of dirt icecream Pro: -Sandwiches were all really good & filling. The bread was toasted just right & the grilled cheese was not too greasy. -Sandwiches come with chips~ theirs tasted almost like honey mustard which we really enjoyed -Tomato bisque soup was filling, hearty, and just the right amount of cream. Not sour at all like some can be. -Can't go wrong with ice cream! Kathy and Jordan are FANTASTIC! We've been there just a few (way TOO few) times, but they've already made us feel like family. The food is over the moon good...both breakfast (My Sandwich and the Avocado Toast!!!! with a side of toast and jam!) and lunch. The soups are indescribably delicious (any time you can put a spoon in your chowder and it stands up, you know it is out if this world!!) the Tomato bisque with the grilled cheese...OH, MY STARS!!!! THE MOST AMAZING ICE CREAM. We were at Champoeg for the day, and asked the ranger about signs showing ice cream and they completely sold us. We went wandering around the park, lost track of time, and got to the store juuuuust as they were closing. The owner was just locking up and he very kindly let us in. Which worked out for everyone involved because we bought two cones and three pints! The ambiance of the place was great and it looks like they do live music too. This is a fun country Cafe in a very old historic building. The family that runs this are terrific. The menu has good variety and everything is homemade. Great soups and sandwiches they have all kinds of ice creams, desserts, coffee drinks. They even have entertainment on the weekends. First time & WOW-what a comfortable & quaint cafe. It was a rainy day so we couldn't fully enjoy the gorgeous outdoor garden seating area, but it's beautiful-next time! Inside they have a small library & drawing books for the kids, a chess lesson going on in there too. So much fascinating visual & written history on the walls. We even purchased a beautiful seasonal bouquet. They make a delicious GF salmon chowder- all soups & sandwiches can also be gluten free. So many delicious ice cream choices. This new family run deli/restaurant is just the small town offering that Butteville should offer. Within three minutes you know that Jordan is pouring his soul into all food that he offers. The menu is simple (as it should be) but everything we've tried has been delicious. Today was the ham/goat cheese sandwich, but the grilled cheese and tomato soup offering is awesome as well. This Oregon heritage location is full of historic and cultural artifacts and information, that makes it a destination in itself. We came for the ice-cream after biking from champoeg state park and it was a wonderful way to cool off after such a long ride. The bbq smelled amazing but we opted to try something light and got a grilled cheese that was perfect cooked ooey gooey in the inside crisp on the outside. One of the best places in Oregon! An absolute must stop at if you're in the area. We took the 2.4 mile hike from the park over to the store (twice!) and both times we were greeted with wonderful & friendly people, great food (superb ice cream!), and overall a truly joyful experience. I am not a native Oregonian but have lived here for almost seven years. My husband and I love exploring the area around us and a neighbor recommended checking out Champoeg State Park (Sham-poo-eee). While touring the Visitor's Center, a guide told us not to miss the Historic Butteville Store on our way home. Beginning in 1851, it is the oldest continuously-operating retail establishment in Oregon, now owned by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. It's been many things over the years: a community general store, recreation center, to what is it now, a specialty food store & cafe serving Half Pint Brothers ice cream, sandwiches, drinks, and a few camper-specific staples. Apparently, there was once a saloon on one side and a notorious Bourbon distillery behind the store. We were pleasantly surprised how cute the store was inside, decorated in an old-fashioned sort of way, with even a small lending library. We decided to have lunch and ordered perfectly made turkey sandwiches, cold drinks and found a shaded spot out on the lawn under a huge white canopy. It was fairly busy for a week day afternoon and everyone seemed happy to be enjoying the day. It's a popular stop for cyclists and motorcyclists as big groups came and went as we watched and ate. On the way out we did peek at the delicious ice cream but decided to save that for next time. Service was friendly and staff behind the counters were very young but well trained. They have special events at the store and "Saturday Night Out" three-course dinners with live music. Reservations are required. You'll find "Taco Tuesday" and "Deli Days" Wednesday through Sunday. But make sure you get the ice cream. read more

From Champoeg State Park we hiked through a forest of Doug Firs and white Oaks, all covered in moss, without hardly any leaves. Ferns and ivy lined the trail too. It's winter and a brisk hike 2 miles out to the historic Butteville store - the first mercantile store open in Oregon, 1851. Behind the store was a distillery for Bourbon whiskey. Now owned and operated by Oregon State Parks, it is a cafe / diner featuring seasonal musical artists at dinner. Now closed for winter! Darn! read more

What a great surprise in rural Oregon. We dropped in for a sandwich and ice cream. The sandwich, served on toasted ciabatta, was one of the best deli sandwiches I've ever had. And sweet corn ice cream with blackberries -- churned that morning! -- was just like great homemade ice cream. This place has some reviews from previous owners which are no longer accurate. Taco Tuesday is a fun way they switch their menu up each week (not so secret tip...try the queso!). In the summer they have Bingo on Wednesday nights that is an awesome way to spend a summer evening outside with grilled burgers, etc. Fall brings the addition of homemade soups to their menu - I just had the broccoli cheddar and it blew my mind - sooo good! This is a cute little store off the beaten path. My favorite stop when riding my bicycle through Champoeg State Park. The store has the regular snack item fare as well as fresh baked pies, coffee and sandwiches. There are many tables to sit at. There is outdoor seating as well. This is an antique building owned by the state and kept in great shape. Although it's not open year round it's a treasure when it is. It has an informal appeal right down to a self serve book exchange in the hallway near the restroom. If you are ready to step back to the old days before computers and cell phones, this is the place to step back in time. I'll be back again. read more
