The lunch trio stopped in at HK Café on Maunakea St because we received good reviews from a few co-workers and friends. HK Café took over the space previously occupied by Happy Garden, just North of Hotel Street. The menu is a single, double-sided plastic encased sheet; with different (lower) prices than seen on the menu for the Waikiki location. We tried the Beef Brisket and Beef Tendon Stewed Noodles, Seafood Laksa with egg noodles and the Curry Fish Balls (sorry, no pic). The menu cautioned that it could take up to twenty minutes to prepare certain dishes; it took nine minutes for the noodle dishes, almost twenty minutes for the laksa and a little longer for the fish balls. The beef brisket / tendon dish ($16) reminded us of a similar dish from Mini Garden but the soup is vastly superior. The laksa ($17) was spicy (yes!) and contained two large shrimp, two mussels and pieces of squid and fishcake. The dish that disappointed us was the curried fish balls ($11); it was hyped as a "must have" by an acquaintance ... Uh, underwhelming was the group consensus. Final thoughts ... excepting the fish balls, we liked what we ordered and would return. That's about as good an endorsement as our group doles out for a casual dining spot. read more

Came here with a friend to try it out coz it's new (is the one in Stix Asia the same but a different location?) anyway, their tendon soup noodle was delicious! Whenever I see that on the menu that's what I would order coz I love tendons. They made it really well here! We also tried their thick toast and seafood laksa. The toast was good but nothing to write home about. The laksa didn't have enough depth in their flavor but it's not bad. I still like the laksa in the mall food court better! Hong Kong Cafe lived up to its name! We were so excited when we heard about this place. What's better than authentic HK style breakfast in Hawaii? Come early if you can because they have a nice breakfast combo from 7-10am. We missed the breakfast combo specials but we were still able to grab a few favorites for lunch. To start off, we ordered the HK style milk tea. The milk tea was silky and nicely sweetened with condensed milk. The tea flavor was spot on and tasted just like the real deal from Hong Kong! We also got the HK Cafe Special Ovaltine French Toast which was heaven on a plate. Two pieces of asian milk toast smothered with condensed milk and topped with ovaltine. Yummy! For main dishes we ordered pork chop over rice with tomato sauce, wonton noodle soup and Singapore style noodle (my husband inhaled before I was able to snap a picture). Each item was delicious and full of flavor. I especially liked the wonton noodle soup which was so warm and comforting. Chinese breakfast in Honolulu, Hawaii... I was walking back to my car on a Sunday when parking in Chinatown is free. It just so happened that I looked up and saw the sign for HK Cafe. Note: HK to me usually stands for Hello Kitty. In this case, it probably is the abbreviation for Hong Kong. I remember reading Paul C.'s review - He was First To Review. Paul gave this place a Five Star Review, so, I wanted to check it out! I was lucky to get a table. There are two booths, three two seater tables, and two long tables that can be adjusted to fit larger parties. If there are no tables available, sign the clipboard inside the door, next to the self-service water (hot and cold) dispenser. Service was efficient and pleasant. Younger Asian people work here and are great with taking orders, cleaning tables, seating customers, understanding/speaking both English AND Chinese language, and processing the bills on the terminal and the mobile device. I told the young man that I like this place so much that I visited two days in a row! On the first day, I had wonton soup. It was just right for a 72° morning in February. That's chilly for us... LOL! I really liked the dumplings with shrimp and pork filling. The broth was not too salty, but just right! I may have had about a dozen wontons! On the second day, I had shredded pork with preserved vegetable (ga Choi) and rice noodle soup. I really liked it because I haven't had ga choi in so long - and it wasn't the spicy type! My friend brought me here for some brunch when I was visiting and we ordered the breakfast combos. We ordered the homemade steamed flour rolls and the congee combos. Both were very delicious, especially the noodles. The HK Cafe Style Thick French Toast was also very delicious. We got our food after we ordered fairly quickly. A lot of people came in for take out orders, usually milk tea and the staff seems to work quickly from what I saw. A new restaurant occupied the old Chinese dim sum restaurant. HK cafe, I believe it stands for Hong Kong serves up HK comfort food. The restaurant is medium size with a few tables and pretty spacious. The setup is similar to cafes like in Hong Kong. They have a breakfast and lunch menu (starts at 10am) with different dishes. Not a lot of options during breakfast but we decided to get the combo special so we can try different dishes. A dish and combo usually comes with a hot or cold (extra charge) milk tea. Jook - got the pork intestine one. Not a fan of the intestine but the bf enjoyed it. The jook itself tasted good. Beef rice roll and pork rice roll - not your usual rice roll at dim sum restaurant. This one was similar to the Cantonese style rice roll and the texture wasn't as smooth. Flavor wasn't bad. They have their own special shoyu sauce for it. Shoyu stir fried noodle - noodles were a bit choppy. Flavor tasted good. Not too salty, a bit oily though. HK Milk tea - milk tea with coffee. Aroma is stronger than the usual boba milk tea shops. If you get cold it's an extra charge. What we did was get a cold and the other drink hot, dunk the hot milk tea in the ice after finishing the cold drink. Save money. Luckily I didn't pay ahead of time so I just reordered when I arrived. Really looked forward to trying this place because it looked like a legit HK cha chaan teng and it did not disappoint. You can always check the legitimacy of a HK cafe by the quality of its HK milk tea and I knew I was in for a treat when I tasted it. Some of the best condensed milk PB toast I've had. Their char siu omelette with gravy was good and not something I typically find at HK cafes. Would recommend if you're wanting to try something hearty and comforting. During our first visit to HK Cafe, hubby and I ordered the chicken laksa with thin rice noodles, wonton noodle soup with egg noodles, and the Hong Kong style milk tea. The laksa was pretty good. I ended up adding a good amount of white pepper, chili oil, and shoyu to the wonton noodle soup. Hubby, whose parents are from Hong Kong, says Hong Kong/Cantonese dishes are generally on the lighter, blander side. The wontons added flavor to the noodle soup! I thought the Hong Kong style milk tea was nice and strong, but hubby thought it was a bit too milky and probably would've preferred the Hong Kong style lemon tea. Previously this spot was occupied by long time tenant Happy Garden, a Chinese restaurant that I patronized a lot. As the Unofficial Mayor of Chinatown, I just had to investigate. I wanted to come and dine with family but decided to grab a Hong Kong Milk Tea for the road before heading to my part time job. I had just picked up breakfast for the crew and had some time so I arrived before their opening of 8am. A young male staff greeted me and offered me to have a seat and wait as it was clammy and wet morning but I declined and waited outside. In about 5min he brought out my Hong Kong Milk Tea. I paid in cash and was on my way. THE VERDICT: The Hong Kong Milk Tea was good but found it a little sweet to my taste. It had the deep tea essence that I like. Price wise, it was about the same what I pay in Chinatown. Overall, a very pleasant first experience where I will be sure to be back again. Hopefully I can drag my family here so we can order an array of dishes to sample their food. Visit #2 Dragged the family on President's Day to HKC. Lunch menu is only available from 10am - 2pm so we ordered from breakfast menu: Beef Satay with Rice Noodles (4/5) Good wok hei on the dish. You could taste the chef's skills and overall tasty. However, considerably more noodles than toppings. Pork with Preserved Duck Egg Congee (5/5) Classic comfort dish executed well. Generous amounts of protein and tasty. Worthy of ordering again. However, the look funn was a tad bit overcooked that sadly brought down the dish. We converted our noodle and congee orders to a combo that came with either toast with condensed milk or deep fried dough (油条yau tiu). Wasn't in the mood for deep fried so we all got the toast that was delicious. But perhaps ordered too much food as we had leftovers. Service was okay. It's still soft opening so they are working out the kinks of a brand new business. With their strong competition of Lam's Kitchen and Sandy's Cafe nearby, HKC is worthy of a visit. Clearly they need more wait staff as there were hiccups during our dine in. Restaurant filled up and had people waiting outside when we left at 945am. I need to come back after 10am as I really want to try their Malaysia Laksa and other dishes. After running some errands in Downtown Honolulu, we continued our walk into Chinatown for marketing at a couple of our favorite Chinese grocers and meat roaster. I convinced my husband to revisit HK Café since I had experienced delicious samples at the recent Yelp Elite Event: Passport to STIX Asia. I was impressed to find a second location of HK Café in Waikīkī, where our Yelp Elite group sampled two appetizers, Chu Hou Beef Brisket and Tendon Stew and House Special Fried Chicken Wing. After all, the STIX Asia Food Hall features 17 authentic Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese, and Korean comfort or street food restaurants. HK Café is noted for its traditional and modern Cantonese-style food items and caters to breakfast, lunch, and dinner crowds. Our first experience was shortly after their Grand Opening, and we, unfortunately, missed several of their morning specials that many other Yelpers raved about and still had some operational kinks to work out. However, what stuck in my mind was their tender and flavorful Chinese beef brisket and tendon stew that reminded me of my grandparents' and parents' home cooking. The cherry on the top to serving the Chinese beef stew is to pair it atop rice or thin noodles or broad flat rice noodles, either in soup or dry tossed. The key to this stew is the long and slow cooking process and amount of seasonings, especially when making the braising sauce that includes chu hou or chee hou paste 柱侯酱, oyster sauce, sugar, cumin, star anise, etc. HK Café's stew recipe is melt-in-your-mouth tender, and this time, I chose to pair it with broad, flat rice noodles in soup. This time around, the soup was a little less cloudy but was still packed with flavor. This soup noodle dish is less oily than the stew served without starch or vegetables. We usually eat pork instead of beef, but today, we ate beef. My husband chose the Beef Chow Fun, dry-style that was expertly stir-fried, as we noticed a few broken flat rice noodles. The wok hei (lit. "Breath of a Wok") is the hallmark of an outstanding Chinese chef that "magically" brings out smoky flavors from the Maillard reactions, caramelization of sugars, and intensely hot smoking oil. We could see and taste the slight charring on the tender beef slices and unbroken noodles. This dish wasn't greasy or oily, yet there was a patina overall. I'd like to mention that the service seemed somewhat disjointed. When we entered the completely full restaurant, we signed into their wait-list and stood outside by the doorway. As customers left, it took awhile before any of the wait help cleared the used dishes and tables. Also, even after clearing the tables, neither worker went to look at the wait list or motioned to us to enter. However, once we were seated, our server did quickly provide us with menus and a pitcher of iced water. Once our food was delivered, no one came by to ask if we needed or wanted to order anything else. Still, this was an improvement from our first visit and we're looking forward to returning even though we'll have to wake earlier to get into Chinatown to catch their breakfast menu items. read more

So happy to see they're now open late for dinner. Although I was craving their seafood laksa, there's a different menu for dinner but it gave me a chance to try something new, which I didn't mind. Top 3 favorites: beef dry chow fun, salt and pepper squid (not pictured because we devoured it so quickly - it was that good!), and Ovaltine French toast. The chicken wings were also flavorful and crispy. The supreme soy sauce fried noodles reminds me of how my mom makes it. Can't forget the drinks. They offer legit Hong Kong style milk tea and Horlicks (sweet malted milk) and Ovaltine (chocolate malted drink). Seeing this on the menu was enough to get me to try this place as it takes me back to when I used to visit my family in Hong Kong (the interior especially). I highly recommend HK Cafe! read more

Four of us came here for lunch on a Wednesday, and sat right away. Parked in one of the municipal parking structures. The Wonton soup with egg noodles was delicious, broth tasty and a good amount of noodle serving, we got this 2x. The seafood laksa was delicious, but spicy! Two pieces each of shrimp, muscles, squid and imitation crab. The shrimp omelette with black pepper sauce was also good! Don't get the spaghetti with tomato sauce. The peanut butter French toast was so good, but small for the price of $8.99! Lunch with all these dishes and two sodas came out to just under $90. The food is fine. Its just the value aspect that is lacking. We ordered Seafood Laksa. It was OK. Really nothing that special. For $17 it was OK. Not horrible, but not a great deal either. The Seafood Laksa at Panya is $7 more, but a much larger portion and I feel its a better value even though it's more expensive. However, if you aren't a big eater, you might prefer the portion size at HK Cafe. We also ordered the Shrimp Omelette Over Rice with Black Pepper Sauce. It was good. But for $16 it seemed high. A bigger portion would have helped. The eggs were perfectly cooked, but just small. The sauce and shrimp were cooked fine. Just one more egg would have really helped. Chinatown is typically a buck or two less than the same food elsewhere. However this place is surprisingly pricey for what you get. That said, the food is good, and no problem with the service. We ordered the seafood laksa, chicken laksa, Ovaltine French toast, and a milk tea. The milk tea arrived first. It had a very strong flavor and was very good. The two laksas came after. I had the seafood and the hubby ordered the chicken. The server told me it was medium spicy, which it was. I don't eat spicy, but this was doable. It had a nice kick, but was lacking in the coconut milk department. It didn't have that smooth creaminess that I'm used to. It was also lacking in seafood. It came with two pieces each of imitation crab, calamari, mussels and head on shrimp. I've known my husband for 13 years and this is the first time that he's tried laksa. Yes, we don't eat the same things and he doesn't like to try new foods. However, he loved his bbq chicken laksa. Take that as you will. The Ovaltine French toast was the last item that they brought out. It was also the best dish that we had that day. It's two pieces of French toast with condensed milk and Ovaltine served warm. When you cut into it, the condensed milk just oozes out. It was so good and just hit the spot. This place is relatively busy. People kept coming in and out. They also do a lot of takeouts. Had a chance to try HK cafe after seeing it pop on on social media. I was really excited since I hadn't had a good bowl of laksa since my trip to Singapore literally years ago, so decided to adventure into Chinatown on a Saturday for it. There is a municipal parking lot across the street, pretty close to HK Cafe which is nice. We unfortunately got to the restaurant at a bad time where everyone had just been seated or were enjoying their meal, so we put our name down and waited outside for about 25-30 minutes until a table opened up for us. 3 tables happened to pay & leave at the same time, so ourselves & 2 other tables got seated. Then... they took our order last even though we were waiting first :( I think usually this wouldn't have bothered me too much but girl was hot & hangry! lol. Luckily the food came out relatively quickly so it was fine. Speaking of the food.. it was alright. I came specifically for the laksa & I didn't feel like the broth was very flavorful at all - bit of a letdown. On the other hand, the chicken wings were very good, and so was the beef brisket. The beef was very tender! Service was quick & efficient - there's a water station by the entrance so you go & grab your own water, & the server will run your bill right at your table so it's a lot quicker. Brought my family to try this new restaurant in Chinatown after seeing some yummy photos on social media. It's a small place but has a modern vibe with lots of light. Came a little bit too late for breakfast (7am-10am), so we ordered off the main menu. We tried the ovaltine French toast, pork chop with spaghetti, beef brisket with tendon noodle soup, and beef omelette on rice. We also ordered hot milk tea! I enjoyed the Hong Kong style milk tea (pre-sweetened) and the ovaltine toast surprisingly gushed sweet creamy condensed milk when cut into! However, I wasn't impressed with any of the savory dishes. There was a lack of umami flavor in the noodle and rice dishes that usually characterize Hong Kong food. I ordered the minced pork and egg steamed flour roll and it reminded me of look fun from dim sum. I loved the texture of the noodles and egg together but it did lack flavor for me. I added the chili oil they had at the table and it instantly made it flavorful and delicious. It comes with a choice of tea and I got it hot with the choice to make it cold for $1.50 more. The service was quick and I would definitely come back to try the lunch menu. I love their shredded pork with mushroom and bean sprouts stir fried noodles; the noodles were thin and crispy but not greasy at all. The sauce did not clump up the noodles either. The best stir fried noodles ever! I also tried their curry fish balls and they were tender and the sauce was made with the right amount of kick to it. The fried chicken wings were made to perfection with crispy skin and juicy meat. My daughter doesn't usually eat meat but she saw my friend and I enjoying the wings and she tried one, too! We came to visit from Los Angeles and I haven't tried one HK cafe that makes such authentic food. The menu seems similar to other such Hong Kong style Cantonese cafés that have been popping up presently. I had the laksa since I am a big fan of laksa. Being originally from Southeast Asia before moving to Hawaii, I know how these types of dishes should be and taste. This was far from it. Although not bad, it was a poor attempt at making the real thing. It was like they just took coconut milk and Thai red curry seasoning to create it. Went on a Saturday around 11am. Service was good, simple and quick. Restaurant was empty. Interior was clean and well lit. We ordered the shrimp roll and the toast with peanut butter. Shrimp roll was very good, would recommend. Toast with peanut butter was not what I was expecting. Not too sweet. What I didn't like was the inside, it was mushy and almost uncooked. It was also pretty oily. Wouldn't recommend or get it again. For just two items total came to about $20, plus 3% charge for using card. Overall, okay place. read more
