Found this place by accident. We are not stranger to South bend or Notre Dame but have not stopped by this route for quite few years. Was heading to Ohio and arrived here for a quick dinner. Very happy to see a decent Chinese place right off the exit. Food was great and not greasy type. We got fish fillet with broccoli, salt and pepper squid, and a great veggie. This place saved us on Saturday night! We were in town for a football game (Go Bearcats!) and staying at the hotel next door. After the game we were starving, yet struck out about everywhere close to the hotel (cough, cough, Cheers). So we decided to order carry out from here. We were stunned how good the food was. The food is terrible. We ordered the country style tofu and sautéed string beans, and they were both not good. The tofu was sweet, gummy and otherwise tasteless, instead of spicy as stated in the menu. The string beans weren't even Chinese long string beans, they were regular green beans, the color was a yellowish green, and it tasted sour. It was impossible to consume. One of the great travesties associated with America's increased fondness of Chinese food over the past 20 years is that while the number of Chinese restaurants in every city has tripled, the traditional sit-down ones are disappearing. In fact, my 3 favorite sit-down Chinese restaurants have all closed in the past decade. When I took my daughter, who also loves Chinese food, to South Bend we noticed this place happened to be right by our hotel, so it was a no-brainer to check it out. Wow, am I glad that we did. It reminded me so much of the Chinese restaurants my dad used to take me to growing up. White tablecloths adorn each table, full bar, and the food is brought to the table at a pace that lets you enjoy the meal. We dined on crab Rangoon, egg rolls, won ton soup, orange chicken, and General Tso chicken. Each was absolutely delicious and perfectly prepared. The chicken dishes even had a carved onion flower. Impressive!! The service was phenomenal, and they had a very impressive menu, including a great selection of alcoholic beverages. I hosted colleagues from Chongqing China this week. After traveling2 weeks all over the central USA, I knew they would love to have some "Home" food. I have been to HoPing House several times and love it. I was very pleased they also have an authentic Chinese menu available. My guests were very happy and told me this was the most authentic Chinese meal they have ever had in the USA. The food was great and prepared as I have experienced in China. Great place . Our food arrived at our table literally 4 1/2 min after we placed our order. That just tells me that everything was just rushed in the kitchen. Because there weren't that many diners when we arrived. The center of my baby corn was cold. Disappointed. I previously saw a reviewer that posted their salt and pepper squid 9 mos ago and ordered it and unfortunately, it wasn't on their menu. It was the main reason why I decided to eat here. And my waitress never asked me if she can ask the chefs to make it for me. She just said "no." She didn't even give us hot tea upon arrival. We had to ask for it. And towards the end of our meal, she took away one of our entree dish, even though I wanted to eat more of the sauce. Our waitress Tiffany was rather drabby and didn't seem to enjoy working there. It almost made us wonder if she was being treated fairly at the restaurant. Or maybe she's depressed? 6-4-20 I did a take out order of a large container of vegetable fried rice, lemon chicken with a separate container for the lemon sauce and white rice with a Coke. The vegetable fried rice I had was very bland with no taste. A good vegetable fried rice does not require any sauces. Since I don't eat meat I eat a lot of rice / vegetable fried rice. The large container for $9.50 is small compared to other Chinese locations. The price is also more expensive than other places. I asked for spicy hot mustard which they said they had but they never gave it to me but instead they gave me regular mustard. They also gave me sweet & sour sauce but the portion size was so small. I won't be back. My friend had the lemon chicken with white rice and egg role. My friend gives 5/10 stars. He said he didn't care for the lemon sauce and he said there should of been more sauce. My friend had a Coke as well. The food was not worth $25.95. I will continue my search for a tasty vegetable fried rice but we won't be coming back here. read more

Really good food considering it's IN. Stepped in for lunch and ordered the Szechuan beef from the lunch menu special. Everything was very fresh and light and not drenched in heavy greasy sauce. Great place to eat! Been coming here for a few years with my family and we always look forward to it. The prices are very fair and large portions (most of the time I'll have some leftovers for later!). Although some of the servers' English isn't that great, they were still very friendly and brought me everything I ordered and checked on me from time to time. The front door says masks are required, but the only people wearing masks were the employees so no worries if you don't have one.
