During the passing of Hurricane/TS Lala we lost commercial power for 44 hours. Found out my PV system wasn't charging even though there was solar. I texted AEI's lead electrician, he was able to help me troubleshoot my system. Turns out I need to flip the "monitor" breaker off for 2 minutes that's located in Tesla Gateway. Waited about 5 minutes, then saw on the app my PV was charging the battery. I wish there was a better means of communication with AEI. Maybe use of an online ticketing system. Just a thought, maybe share a guide for customers on what to do during events or emergencies. read more

I rarely leave reviews like this, but after nearly three months of trying to get my solar system repaired, I am beyond frustrated. Alternate Energy installed our 36-panel system about 12-13 years ago. For years, we were happy with it. Our electric bills were incredibly low--even occasionally around $17 despite running A/C constantly. When we've needed help in the past, Alternate Energy wasn't always quick to respond, but they ultimately got the job done. Unfortunately, our recent experience has been completely different. I noticed our electric bills climbing and eventually checked the solar app and realized something was wrong with our system. Our electric bill in April was $321.33. By May it had increased to $458.66. June 3: An Alternate Energy technician came out and diagnosed a bad inverter. We were quoted $500 for the first hour of labor and $300 for each additional hour. The inverter itself was covered by the manufacturer, but we were responsible for labor. June 30: The technician returned and installed the replacement inverter. Great--or so I thought. I checked the app afterward and the panels still weren't showing that they were working correctly. I called and was told to give the system a few days to reset and call back if the problem continued. It continued. After more calls and difficulty connecting with Shyla, the person handling our service, I was told the technician needed to come back, get on the roof, and diagnose what was wrong with the panels. The next available appointment was July 30. The technician arrived. I expected him to inspect the panels on the roof. About two hours later, I realized I hadn't heard anyone on the roof, went outside, and discovered the technician and truck were already gone. No one had knocked on the door or explained what had been done. When I eventually spoke with Shyla, I was told he had worked on the inverter.The brand-new inverter that had just been replaced a month earlier.At this point I was completely confused, so I asked for something very reasonable: please email me a recap of the work performed so far, what has been found, and where we stand. Shyla agreed she would send it. I still haven't received it. I was then told the technician would need to be scheduled AGAIN after Shyla spoke with the solar panel company. Since then, I've made multiple calls and left multiple messages for Shyla trying to find out what is happening and what the plan is. Today, August 28, I called again. I was told Shyla was at lunch, and the person I spoke with assured me she would have Shyla call me back. I explained how frustrated I was and how long this had been going on. By 3:20, I still hadn't heard anything, so I called again. This time I was told Shyla was on another call and I could leave another message. I asked to speak to a manager and was told Shyla is the manager. I asked for her manager and was offered the opportunity to leave yet another message for someone else. No one called me back by the end of the business day. And while all of this has been happening, here are our actual electric bills: April: $321.33 May: $458.66 June: $615.96 July: $947.98 August: $877.61 That's $3,221.54 in electric bills in five months. I understand that equipment fails. I understand that a 12-13-year-old solar system may need repairs. I understand that parts have to be ordered and technicians have busy schedules. What I don't understand is why, after starting this process on June 3 and having Alternate Energy technicians at our home THREE times, I still don't have a clear explanation of what is wrong with our system, what needs to be done to fix it, when it will be fixed, or even the written recap of the work I've already requested. We've been Alternate Energy customers for more than a decade. I shouldn't have to repeatedly chase down a company we trusted with a major investment just to find out what is happening with our repair. I'm sure Alternate Energy is very responsive when someone is interested in purchasing a new solar system. I wish their service after the sale made an existing customer feel equally important. At this point, I don't need another apology or another promise that someone will call me back. I need someone with the authority to take ownership of this situation, explain exactly what has happened so far, and give me an actual plan to get our system working again. read more

What a monopoly you have! I called in to schedule someone to troubleshoot my pv system. Before anything else can be done, I have to pay for your monitoring system, Envoy,for $1300-$1400! This is the monitoring system YOU installed and it died within the first year. Alternate Energy could not repair it and it hasn't been working since. Why is the consumer responsible for a tool YOU use?! Why can't you connect to my system with a laptop to troubleshoot why my panels are not generating any power? If you use this company, you better hope you never need them to service or stand behind their work. We keep having leaks from where they installed our solar hot water. They came out over a year ago to fix it and with this most recent round of rains, it began leaking again. After leaving numerous messages, I finally got in touch to report the leak. I was told they were slammed and would put me on the schedule and somebody would call me. That was over three weeks ago. I keep trying to find out status of a repair, but nobody ever calls me back. At first I thought they were going to abandon me with the claim that it was not theirs. They however did not. They reviewed the problem and came up with a solution and then put in a completely new drain. It's amazing to find a vendor that honors their commitment like this. Called to schedule a "tune up" for my solar water heater. Also wanted to see if I could get an estimate to replace it with an "on demand" electric water heater that would require no monitoring, less maintenance, and less troublesome that a tank solar water heater. Female who called me back was very minimally helpful. Sounded like it was the end of the day and she was tired and wanted to go home already. Not a pleasant experience trying to speak to her. She quoted $300 for service person to come out and just look at the system. Fee to service or "tune up" was not included in that price. Sorry, I can look at it myself for free. No thanks. This is one of the best companies that I am sadly going to remove from my usual go-to list. I've used them for many jobs and meant to write praise for them, but it took some frustrating experiences to get me to post this one. Let me start with the praise that is well-deserved: 1) Solar panels and battery storage. My parents used them first, and Alternate Energy briefly monitored their solar panel production to find that one panel was not producing as well as the others - something my parents wouldn't have noticed. Fixed. Leeland was an amazing point of contact for us when we then added solar and batteries to our home. He sized it based on our current usage and didn't fuss when we asked to go bigger, knowing our usage would increase. During the pandemic we contacted Leeland again to ask about maxing out solar panels on our roof and adding another battery to our home - again, all done quickly, and done well. 2) Electric vehicle charger installation. We had one EVSE installed during the solar panel job, done for a very fair price (even by mainland standards). We later asked to have a second EV charger installed. This one had an issue in that it didn't show up in our Tesla's energy tracking. Trevor was amazing for contact and coordination (for this and other projects) - he noted that the technicians who had done the job were newer, and he got it working quickly. He also noted that they had installed the wrong kind of electrical outlet, as they had used an indoor outlet (although with a cover). He swapped it out for an outdoor outlet and fixed some minor damage that had occurred during the installation, all at no extra charge. I appreciated his thoroughness! 3) Solar water heater maintenance. Simple and fine. 4) Home ethernet wiring. This one isn't listed as a service that they do, but their electricians took the job and did an absolutely amazing job of adding ethernet to my rooms based exactly on what I asked for, and to the outdoors for security cameras. They mounted the cameras (I handled the angling) and even tried to fix a cover for one of my air conditioners that keeps sliding down. The cost of this work was significantly less than a "low voltage" installer had quoted. 5) Air conditioning repair. One of my AC units began to struggle, and the technician identified that the condenser unit would need to be replaced. We had some scheduling delays for this one, and I have to give a shout-out to Ginger on the phones and by email, who was empathetic, responsive, and incredibly helpful. After the job was done I noticed a water leak; I tried to trouble-shoot it on my own and eventually determined that the water was coming from behind the unit. The technicians came out, identified that they hadn't fully secured the insulation, and even tried to scrub away some of the water stains on my wall. If you're keeping track, that's a lot of jobs, and while two of them weren't all 100% perfect, the company ultimately identified the issues and made them right. So why the negative? It has to do with the billing. 1) For the ethernet job, we had discussed the quote and then noted in advance that if the job took longer than expected there could be a cost increase. A complication did occur, causing delay. I had received one bill at the start to pay a portion of the job before it started (which is standard), and then the second bill at the job completion seemed to include the added time. However, I was later told that I still had to pay the rest of the first bill. That would mean that the cost overrun was over 50% of what was quoted. It took multiple calls over multiple weeks to get this one resolved. The company ultimately cleared it and said that everything was paid, but that was a lot of time and stress. 2) The air conditioning repair job in which they had to return to fix the insulation and admitted to it being their error? I agreed to pay a service fee, and was given a positive response when I asked if the fee could either be reduced or waived if it was found to be related to the original job. The technicians usually leave a receipt of the work done before the final bill is sent to us, but we didn't get that, nor did we get a final bill to pay. We assumed that they took responsibility for their work and left it at that. 7 months later I received notice that "internal oversight" had occurred and I owed the full $575. I called in, was offered $150 off, and admitted I was unhappy; I said it might be reasonable to pay the time for the technicians, but they admitted it was their error. So the bill was reduced to $250 for the technicians' time, they confirmed I'd get a new bill, and then promptly terminated the call, without so much as a season's greetings or an apology. I won't be so dramatic as to say I'll never use them again, but I've gone from seeing what else I can possibly use them for to making them my last call. Save all invoices and get confirmation of payment completion in writing. read more

WARNING!!!!! Recently, one of the Mitsubishi split units was not as cold as it should be. I contacted Alternate Energy to see if they could send a technician to come and fix the problem and I was told that there is a 2 month wait because they are really busy. They are busy installing new AC units to get new revenue and since they already got my money. I will have to wait until the new business is done. This happened again to me about a year ago and they were busy then. I thought this was an isolated problem, but now I see that there is a pattern. They are installing more units than they can service. Those of you who are are considering getting a split unit installed please learn from my experience and think down the road when you will need your unit fixed. They are not the only company that sells, install and services AC units. They are the few that spend a lot of money advertising for new business. They usually service your unit annually and give you a rebate through Hawaii Energy and in the past they would automatically schedule an annual service call. This past year, they did not schedule any in December because they were too busy. I had to contact them and they finally scheduled me for March, which they serviced the same unit I am having problems with now. I have been a loyal customer over the years with 4 Mitsubishi split units, 2 Tesla batteries, years of paid regular maintenance and various electrical jobs and this is how they reward me. I see many good ratings for installations. I loved my installations. The techs were respectful, knowledgeable and professional. Wait until your unit starts getting old and see if you get to see any techs. The only tech that I know well is Todd because he comes and does maintenance on my units and he does a very thorough job. I wanted to update my review to reflect what has happened since posting. After no response from customer service since 3/19, I posted my review on 4/19. Within 2 hours, Roy contacted us to schedule a meeting to discuss what was posted. After a pretty heated discussion on 4/29, Roy agreed to send a technician to our house the next day. Within 10 minutes of arriving, Drew found that a current transformer had been installed backwards during the warranty battery replacement they performed back in December, which was causing the house to draw electricity from the grid despite adequate battery and solar power. It was quickly fixed and our bills have returned to the minimum amount. Roy reimbursed us for all the extra HECO charges and sincerely apologized for our experience. I am hopeful that we can rebuild our trust in the company again, because as I stated in the first review, many parts of Alternate Energy are excellent. I would recommend talking to Roy directly if you are having problems with customer service because he really goes out of his way to try to understand the situation and attempt to fix it. read more

They were super knowledgeable and helpful. Their job was so quickly done with detailed work. At the end of the each work day, they cleaned and organized the area and the yard that they were working on below the roof so nicely so we didn't feel like we were living at the construction site at all!! The cost are very fair and affordable compared to other businesses. I loved their suggestions at each steps and future plans. They gave us awesome information to keep the cost down and keep their work last longer. I recommend highly if you consider a roof replacement and repair!!! We had four ACs installed by Alternate energy about eight years ago. They did a great job. They do great job of coming out and cleaning. However, almost 4 months ago one of our AC's broke and it took us three months to get an appointment. They came out and $250 the guy was here for 10 minutes. Left said and said he needed to order a part. it has now been two weeks and still no part has been ordered and they are telling us it's be another 8 to 12 weeks once they order to come back and put the part back in. Altogether we're expecting about six months repair. Unfortunately, the 90° weather not helped disappointed in their repair portion of the company. read more

I complained more than six months ago of an unacceptable degradation of performance. Alternate Energy acknowledged that my PVs were underperforming, and said that I would be compensated. I contacted AE today and was suggested to contact another branch of the company to follow-up on the earlier complaint. I have had only great experience working with AE. I have had them install a Tesla battery to my PV system since having had too many power outages and a split AC for a room. My sales consultant was Dave and his assistant is Yuko. From the sales presentation to job completion, all was successfully completed and communication was always in advance. Permit and HECO approvals went smooth with minor hiccups but was easily resolved. The guy that did the install was on-time, professional and went over the operation with me upon completion of both Tesla battery and AC. They helped expedite my project as I had a trip to take and wanted to ensure my battery was installed before I departed. Sure enough, while I was on the mainland the islands experienced those 65 mile winds which resulted in power outages several times for 2 days. My brand new Tesla battery worked as expected. Also, passed inspection by the DPP inspector too! I highly recommend talking to Dave if you're thinking or planning to get this kind of work completed. Special thanks to the following Chris, Nate, Steve, Sonny, Shannon, Franco. The crew is on time, excellent workers, they have great teamwork, great communication, sense of accomplishment while keeping things light and fun. Chris, Nate, and Steve took the time to explain the entire pre-installation process, provide perspective, communicate required layout changes due to my older home. I appreciated that. Chris takes the time to review the user App on your phone and how the new gateway, generation panel, IQ Envoy works. He explained steps on shutting off the power and what to look for in your PV system production and usage. They are an extremely hardworking group, under extremely hot conditions. They also installed a NEMA plug and Emporia EV Charger 2, 48 amp, which I changed the location a few days prior to installation day. As new first time homeowners we've spent quite a bit of time talking to family, friends and researched PV Contractors for our PV needs. Alternate Energy (AEI) stood out above the rest. Thirty years in business and owners comment on Yelp reviews which to me shows good ownership. We immediately felt comfortable with our Project Developer, Miles Yoshimoto. Miles is very friendly and professional and my husband and I liked that he was not "salesy" or "pushy". He patiently helped us figure out what type of system was right for our household usage. We really appreciated Miles responding quickly to our calls and emails. AEl also has a partnership with Hawaii State Federal Credit Union and the finance process was quick and easy! On installation day, my husband, who works in the construction field, said it was a "Quality Install". He appreciated that the installers and electrical crew took the time to explain every step and did a great job cleaning up after. I had to get their names and give them a shoutout so mahalo to Richard, Jade, Alden, Ronald, Reggie & Trey! We have enjoyed using the Tesla app to view our electric usage and how the panels are saving us money! And we have already referred AEI to our co-workers, family and friends. Have not received response from AEI after 3 emails to Casey. Still under warranty & they will not answer my questions. Is my panel that is not reporting on Enphase working? Is it producing energy? Your last correspondence in Nov stated "There is nothing more to do" yet my panel is still dark on Enphase app. You suggested I give a negative review about Enphase & not AEI. When I purchased PV it was with your company, nothing was mentioned if I should have a problem that I need to deal with Enphase directly. Had PV panels installed a while ago. I noticed on my Enphase app that several panels were not working as it should, not efficiently. I notified AE and they said they need to look into it. Several weeks went by and they said "yes, 5 panels are not working properly." So time goes by and they finally return call to set up day to replace panels. When the technicians came out to replace panels, my Enphase app wasn't transmitting to data that it should. Which is how I found out how several panels was not working. AE was not monitoring. Asked technician why she thought it wasn't working, she said she will go back on roof to look at the equipment. She did some "clean up" and still no app working. She then said they will have to return with other technicians to look at it. So I get billed for "troubleshooting" the first time. Then another group of technicians come out and try and "troubleshoot" the problem. 2.5 hrs later, problem still exists. And they charge me again. $1700 later, for "troubleshooting" and nothing was done. Does the new panels even work?! They tell me to call REVOLUSUN to come out and fix it. They gave me .5 hrs off the total price. For not doing anything. Problem still exists. And the refer me to another company. Poor customer service, kept accusing other company for "touching" their products. Why was app working before technicians came out that day? Poor pricing for work that has not been completed. Alternate Energy has installed my PV back in 2012 and recently reinstalled my Solar Water Heater system in 2017. Although they have downsize from their beginning. They still live up to servicing their equipment. Everytime I call them about a problem with my PV install. They come to repair the problem asap free of charge. A coworker of mines recommended Alternate Energy. I did call around for a few quotes and Alternate Energy pricing was pretty fair compared to the other quotes I received. I decided to go with Alternate Energy because Faith was very responsive during the inquiry and application stages. Faith was also kind enough to remind me throughout the process of things I need to complete (things to docusign, first payment, etc). Our install seemed pretty straight forward (I assume we were fortunate). Technicians showed up on both the onsite evaluation and install in a timely manner. Install finished quicker than I thought. I would give this company no stars if I could. I've been trying to get my 6 under performing panels fixed/replaced for the last 5 months. Trying to get a hold of someone is going to be your first obstacle, usually you get their voicemail and you leave a message. You'll be lucky if they return your call. A few days go by, no return calls. You call them again, leave another VM, weeks go by and still no call back. You call them again. I ask a staff member if your company is short staffed, she says "no". So I think to myself then why such poor customer service. Finally I get a hold of someone to explain my dilemma, they look into my system and confirm that yes my panels are not working properly and they will have to replace 5 optimizers, I said why only 5 when 6 panels are not functioning properly, they said they only got approval for 5. I ask them for my project number so I can send Solaredge a question as to why. AEI turns around and says they will replace the 6th optimizer now. Why the sudden 180 I can only guess they did not want me to communicate with Solaredge. Okay, I scheduled the replacement but be warned that you have to pay for the service call before they can come out. I've never dealt with a company that does this. Finally it's the day of the installation and the 2 installers were right on time and very nice, they installed all 6 optimizers. They said I would have to wait before I see any results because they have to input my new serial numbers I said no problem. Months go by my panels are still under performing, I call them back a few more time because remember they do not respond right away. In the mean time my data communication goes down I call them back now for this problem, they said they can not monitor my panels without my data so I have to get my data back online. No problem, they sent me instructions on how to remedy my problem and I did manage to get back on line. Fast forward to today I find out my serial numbers were never inputted and now they are sending someone to come and look it up. I was told when they installed the optimizers they will pass along the serial numbers to the admin office, I guess the ball was dropped somewhere along the line. My take on this situation is find out first what panels will be installed, Mitsubishi no longer does solar in USA, find out what inverters they will install. I have Solaredge installed and I do have wake my system up a lot when power goes down even when I have battery back up. And most importantly, find a reputable company as the installer who also takes pride in their customer service. Buyer beware, AEI does not provide great customer service, I only got the ball moving when I posted my review on Yelp. I guess squeaky wheel gets results. But it should never have to go this route to begin with. read more

After having solar with one powerwall for a few months, I decided to add a second powerwall. I reached out to Dave and we worked out the deal. Yuko connected me with the electrician to plan the design and we worked the kinks out, I had to get rewiring and new subpanel replacement done to make my system as a whole home backup for a reasonable price. I was so excited with the new powerwall addon that I forgot to let them know about the outdoor outlet I had originally. Not a big deal, I notified Yuko and she took care of it. Merv Sr. came and put the outdoor outlet and cleaned up the breakers on the Enphase/powerwall panel. Everythings running perfect as before and would highly recommend AE! read more

We installed a Mitsubishi split air unit with Alternate Energy in 2017. We were very happy with the installers and completed job. We continued to call them for cleaning and servicing since then. Making appointments usually involved a few attempts to get a response but not enough to frustrate us. It is time to have our unit serviced again so I called to make an appointment. Their recording stated that it may take 24-48 hours for a call back. Ok, I waited but no return call. I left a second message and then a third over the next week. My last message I left expressed my frustration and that I would have to find someone else for servicing. I gave it a couple more days and still nothing. As I was always happy with their service I'm disappointed that I was forced to look elsewhere, which I have done. read more

I asked Alternate Energy to install several solar panels and a Tesla battery on my home years ago. They did a great job. I have a problem however with their accounting. A micro convertor failed and I asked them to replace it. It took a few weeks to get the part in I guess, and I called back to see what the delay was for. They finally got the part and scheduled a repair and they were great. By then I was on a vacation for 2 weeks, and I got a call telling me I was late in making a payment. Payment was due 10 days from the invoice date apparently. I paid them in full the day after I got back, which was still just 3 weeks from the work completion. I'm not happy that they are so pushy and demanding, especially for such a small amount. Be aware though, even thought the warranty is 25 years, the little part cost $261 to replace. They could try to appear less desperate. I never agreed to a 10-day provision. read more

I paid $55,000 in May for P.V. panels and 2 batteries. It has been 5 months and I still haven't passed my C&C inspection yet. I wasn't getting much response but it appears they are going to make it a priority now to get the problems fixed. Will update later. read more

We selected Alternate Energies to do our PV Installation about 2 years ago and when we had trouble with our solar water heater, reached out to them again! The crews are awesome---smart, friendly guys who know what they're doing. They were there 10 minutes before they said they would be there and were finished by shortly after lunch. They did a great, clean job! Only suggestion would be that the crew ask the customer how hot they want their water to be The day after our install (Sunday), when our hot water wasn't super hot like my husband likes it to be we had to call for Tech Service. I called on Monday and the Tech came out on Tuesday and was able to fix the temperature to his liking in less than 10 minutes! Although not worth a STAR ding, it would've been nice to not have to go 2 days with tepid water. read more

Got PV for our home and the installation was (almost) a breeze! One of the workers accidentally misstepped while in the attic and caused the drywall in our kitchen to crack, but they assured us they would fix it as soon as possible at no extra charge, good on them! read more

Appreciate AEI (Bruce) reaching via Yelp to follow-up on my post. At the time prior, we were in communication with an AEI Accounting Representative. A request for a copy of the service order that was rendered in 2018 but no copies were provided. AEI Accounting Representative was very understanding to our concerns with being surprised with a bill after 3 years and not being informed of a "service charge" at the time which deemed questionable from our standpoint. As result, per AEI Representative, the outstanding $157.07 (service fee + tax) will be waived/dropped. Feel very relieved to have this resolved and appreciate AEI taking the time to check and following-up on our billing concerns. =) read more

We shopped around with six different solar companies on Oahu. The quoted prices from the big companies were similar, but when we looked into the details of what they were getting like specific model numbers and such, Alternate Energy was choosing the best quality products. In fact everything they have done has been top quality from the initial quote, to the planning, all the details, and even the post installation. We've been a customer of Alternate Energy since at least 2011. We recently had our pv and solar water heater panels taken down and put back (by Alternate Energy) for a re-roofing job (by another company). While we thought that the cost of the job by Alternate Energy was quite expensive, we've had only exceptional service by their employee, Steve Sams. Steve was very conscientious and meticulous in everything that he did. He was always the last one to leave the job site (often 2-3 hours after everyone else) because he was trying to do the best job possible. He wouldn't quit until he solved a persistent excessive water pressure problem. He gained our utmost respect and trust in his knowledge and integrity.
