I called in to place my order, which was quick and easy. I ordered the classic steak which came with steak fries and a ginger ale. The total was $17 and some change. I was about 10 mins. away and arrive around 11:45am. I was able to get a park right out front. Upon entry, I was greeted and assisted promptly as no one was inside. We were in town for an AAU boys basketball tournament and stopped by here for a quick sandwich lunch. The place is a classic hole in the wall place that looks 50's old but very clean inside. The owner was at the front register and said she was Korean. Everything was made within minutes and we dined in. I loved my #6 Philly cheesesteak and cheese fries. The portions were very generous. As always coming here is always a very pleasant experience. I've sat and ate a few times but I usually takeout on the way home. Inside you'll find it a small mom and pop shop but it's clean, well organized and has a small diner type of vibe one of those you wish had a countertop you could sit at next to the grill and eat while you watch them cook. Now I've tried many hoagies here as well as a few regular menu items. The hoagies are always juicy and well made. Seasoned very well and usually on a slightly toasted roll. Usually I goto the classic American Philly or get a Swiss but again I have tried others as well they never fail. Don't be afraid to up your sandwich to a monster size as well. The fries are an average fry crispy to the bite with a bit of softness but the onion rings are where it's at. Crispy with every bite and seasoned to it's a must have. The owners that cook have been here for many years since I was a kid and still cook the same and in some senses a bit better than they used to be back then. The food's also freshly cooked (service is great), and we demolished the two sandwiches between three people within minutes (I forgot to take a picture; we were pretty ravenous.) I'd definitely suggest teriyaki and personal; monster size, if you are planning to split. The sandwiches come with steak cut fries. On the menu, it's says San Leandro's guilty pleasures. That's what is being served at Hoagy Steak. Famous for the cheesesteaks but they also have teriyaki rice plates, burgers, seafood plates, and mush more. It was challenging for me to just order one thing because a lot of items on the menu sounded good to me. But I stuck with what I originally came to try which was the cheesesteak. So how was it? It was solid. Not the best I've had and I think I would ask for 50% more meat that is offered for an additional $4. But overall the bread was soft and toasted perfect. The meat was seasoned well but chopped a little more finely than I'd prefer. I asked for provolone and American cheeses for the contrast which was good. Fries were excellent with crunchy exterior and a soft meaty potato filling inside. The owners were very nice and hard working people. Can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu. read more

I've been eating here since the mid to late 90s when they opened. This is definitely a staple in San Leandro. And one of my go to spots not really a traditional Philly cheesesteak, but the bread is fantastic, the meat is always cooked perfectly and the cheese is nice and gooey. The owners are friendly people and the service is quick. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes for my food. I've eaten here hundreds of times and never get tired of it. I really wanted to give this more than a 3 star because I have a soft spot for mom and pop shops, but there really just wasn't anything that would warrant a return visit. Got a deluxe with curly fries and a mushroom (monster size) with onion rings. We added onion to both for no extra charge (don't forget to request this or you won't get your onions!). Deluxe and curly fries were fine - no specific complaints, but generally forgettable and just "good" (hence the 3 stars). We did have some issues with the monster mushroom and onion rings though. First, meat to cheese ratio felt way off. It was clear they added more meat to the sandwich but the cheese looked and tasted nearly nonexistent. Onion rings also smelled and tasted fishy. We're assuming they used the same oil as their fish n chips and it was just not a pleasant experience. Overall, wanted to love this place but didnt. Inside is pretty tight and since I broke my ankle I've been ordering everything To-Go for now. I always order a cheesesteak add extra cheese, bacon and avocado with a side a of curly fries. This is a mom and pop shop with two very kind very sweet people working: Grace and John. They melt my heart and I will come back just to support their business. One of the reasons why I wanted to come here and try their cheesesteaks is to support local businesses like this. It's a hole in the wall small store front that says cheesesteak on their storefront. There was a bunch of street residential parking around. Since it was my first time here, I got their classic with grilled onions (free of charge) and pepperoncini. All the cheesesteaks come with a side of fries, but you can upgrade to curly fries, cheese fries, sweet potato fries, or onion rings. They all have different prices for the upgrade so make sure you take a look. I upgraded mine to curly fries. The reason why they're getting 3 stars from me is because the cheesesteak wasn't up to my standards. It was good, don't get me wrong, I just have a different standard set for cheesesteaks. I'm not into American cheese in it and I really wanted sweet peppers (they didn't have any). The meat was on the dry side BUT I had to order for takeout, so there might be a contribution to the overcooked meat. I would still come back and support business. Y'all, it's been at least a year and yesterday (Labor Day) I was seriously jonesing for a veggie cheesesteak - they were closed okay, everyone deserves a break. I skipped lunch today in anticipation of this sandwich and OMG, it DID NOT disappoint. I get the veggie lover, NO LETTUCE, NO BELL PEPPERS (they still only have green). I Love, Love, Love this sandwich. Extra mushrooms and they don't skimp on the avocado - The flavor is absolutely amazing with all those mushrooms, onion and seasoning. The sandwich is so very filling. I'm so glad they cut the sandwich in half because I struggle even eating half especially with these bomb steak fries they fry fresh with every order. 10/10 recommend. This place is sooo good. I got the deluxe without cheese (pregnant me can't stand cheese ) and my partner got the deluxe with cheese. We also got curly fries and onion rings. We visited on a Thursday afternoon and dined in. Only one other group was in their small dining area. The food was very tasty and not overly salty. Found Hoagy Steak on Yelp with great reviews so called them up and ordered: 2 Deluxe cheesesteaks, 1 Mexicano, and 1 classic. 1 onion rings, 2 cheese fries and 1 regular fries. They have a nice selection of cheesesteaks and burgers as well. Right on E14th, easy street parking right in front. A tiny little shop with just a few tables. My order was ready. Picked it up, paid and off I went. Everything was fantastic. The cheesesteak a little salty and the cheese fries a little spicy but that's probably just my taste buds.
