Hobby Works has staff walking the floor to help you. And they really help. And they know their stuff. And when you're there, it's got that friendly clubhouse atmosphere like you stopped off here while walking home from school in the 6th grade. Sometimes it feels like with online shopping, kids won't ever experience the friendly local stores like we did. I love this store! Stop by here regularly when we shop at Trader Joe's just to browse the isles. They cater to variety of hobbies, from model building (they have pretty good selection of Gundam models!) to crafts to remote control model airplanes and boats, etc. The owner and employees are always very friendly and knowledgeable. Hobby Works is an AMAZING shop. So many beautiful, creative, and original hobby supplies, art projects, and fun and creative gifts. The store is a real gem--a rare treasure in this day and age. Wonderful and fun way to get your kids off the screens and into the REAL world, this world is fun and imaginative and exciting! The staff is exceedingly polite, knowledgeable, patient, and informative. As a response to a few of the unnecessary and seemingly petty negative reviews--Neurodiverse folks (like me!) are often unable to process the "social niceties" that more neurotypical people demand. We tend to hyper focus on our special interests, ask lots and lots of questions, and are delighted when others share the similar niche interests and are able to teach and share knowledge folkways. This may result in one of the complaining reviewers feeling ignored or they had to wait too long for someone to acknowledge them--because other staff and customers were deep in conversation. Also neurodiverse people can take things personally and feel slighted and obsess about seemingly minor issues. I spent most of my allowance growing up in the 70's building plastic model kits. I haven't seen a store like this in forever and a great walk down memory lane. They mainly have RC, models, trains and legos from what I could tell. Fairly large store, OK lego selection. My thing now is being a AFOL and buying big sets (NASA, buildings, etc.). I don't have the time or eyesight to do plastic models anymore but enjoy much of the same fun with Legos now. I could tell that the store was made up of fans. If I were the store owner I'd go deep on Lego and/or buy/sell sets. All my old hobby stores have long gone and of the inventory, I think Lego has the most potential. I've spent $1000's of dollars on Lego in the past few years. Cool store. read more

I go mainly for Gundam and they have a great selection of kits, tools, paints, decals, and pretty much anything you'd need. Great prices too, and they do have sales from time to time. A lot of the employees also build gundam, so they can give great suggestions and recommendations. My go to Gundam shop. read more

Have been here a few times to get tools, supplies and shop for any Gunpla they may have! They are definitely in a busy area so I'm sure the business is good! Going into the store you are always greeted by a Staff Member whether they're in the middle of something or not! The Store is always stocked with so many different hobby like things you can get into, for kids and adults! I mainly go there for the Gunpla Kits and they usually have a decent Selection depending on what day you go (Stock day or a few days after Stocking) HG kits and some RG and MG Kits usually! Also they have Pokemon Cards which have recently taken a huge leap into more Audiences of Consumers!! The Staff is also super helpful and knowledgeable about pretty much anything in the store and you can tell they all have their own hobbies that they take pride in! If you are into building Model Cars, Gunpla, Puzzles and much more or/and need the tools and supplies for such Hobbies definitely give them a try, you won't leave empty handed or disappointed! This review is for the Hobby Works shop in Federal Plaza, Rockville, MD and is one of few remaining stores from this hobby-chain. Have been to this location on prior occasions, years ago, and see it is still in operation. During this visit saw they were busy and had a wide-range of clients from smaller children to adults, buying various items from Radio-Control (R/C) to school-projects, to fantasy model-kit items. Selection is fair for this size of business and it does appear to be moving inventory. Pricing is a bit higher than expected for item(s), however, the DEL-MAR-VA region is also lacking these older and largely extinct species of "brick-n-morter" locations; so, expect to pay more than what one could find online for pricing. Staff at this location is "aloof". Unaware of minimum meet / greet / departing social courtesy standards when customers enter and leave. Observed staff to simply walk by customers obviously vexed as to what they wanted to find in the store. Perhaps business is so robust...customer service doesn't matter? Or, just such a tight labor market, that interacting with "real-live people" is not a job factor? Item for business owner attention: watching & listening to staff argue and squabble on the sales floor (in front of customers) over personality dramas; makes customers want to leave. Pleased to find a number of items relevant to my miniature terrain crafting needs, including miniature polystyrene diamond plating, model cement, and more. The staff were friendly and helpful, and everyone was wearing a mask to keep each other safe. I have been coming here off and on for years. Since my son has gotten a bit older I find that I get to be a little boy again. I love the shop and he loves it as well. Every time I go there I get treated very professionally and courteously. They take the time to answer questions and walk you thru the various options of cool things they have in the store. My son and I are stuck on the RC cars/trucks - so fun! So fast! Recently I ran into something and misaligned a gear. Took it in not knowing what was wrong. They immediately got their tool bag out and had the truck apart quicker than you can say quick. He pointed out what the issue was and wanted to know if I wanted them to fix right on the spot. Heck, why not, right? A $3.99 part and back up and running! And I learned a little bit in the process as they showed me what to do in case it happened again (my son and I can run into a lot of things when the truck goes 40+ mph). Sure, you can get this stuff on the web for cheaper (slightly) but I have yet to see someone pop out of my computer to fix an issue. I can't say enough about their customer service. Same experience as George S above. Called ahead to see if they had Deans connectors in stock. I was told "oh yeah we got those". Drove 45 minutes in rush hour traffic to get there to find out they had 0 stock. I'm into RC cars/trucks, they mostly carry Traxxas parts that look outdated and their battery selection sucks. You can do way better online. I would compare them to radio shack, they never have what you need. The staff isn't knowledgable. After my experience I've written them off completely as anything other than a joke. I would love to support a local business but until they provide an actual service, I'll continue to order from the web. read more

I would first qualify this review by noting that my only real bases for comparison are the hobby shops I frequented as a kid in Michigan -- 4 (!) decades ago and 500 miles away. Presumably the metrics of quality for such places are different nowadays (and hereabouts). That said, this strikes me as a friendly and handy place to come for basic hobby needs. They seem to have a bit of everything - from HO and N gauge trains to RC planes, cars and helicopters, through Lego, Estes rockets, puzzles for kids, as well as various other of the dwindling number of pastimes that don't entail a lot of TV or computer screen time. The space is not large and the inventory does not appear deep (eyeballing the place I'd say they're a bit better equipped in the RC department) but it's a fun place to come browse and perhaps you'll find something that may help you strike up an interest in something new; and the nerd / geek factor (a good thing!) is just high enough to make the place feel like a bona fide hobby store. Staff is very helpful and enthusiastic but when they're busy you might have a bit of trouble getting anyone's undivided attention, so plan your visit accordingly. read more

I like this place. Every time I'm in the shopping center, I stop by. One of the guys that works there is easy to talk to and genuinely interested in hearing about our hobbies, which is pretty important when working at a hobby shop! They have a lot of fun stuff to look at, I've gotten some dice there... and that's it. So I won't be an expert on their selection, but I do think this would be a great place for beginners to get information on starting their hobby adventures. read more

I went in to get some modeling supplies and the workers there were very helpful. Everything is organized in a manner that makes what you're looking for fairly easy to find and they have a very decent ranges of products compared to a lot of other hobby shops I've been to. Their prices are also pretty good, I even found stuff that was new for cheaper than ones I had found on an online retailer. Overall, I was pleased with the environment. If you're looking to get into modeling or find some projects to fill your free time with you should definitely come here. read more

I love that this store exists. I went in to look for a specific item and pretty quickly realized I needed to ask if they carried it because I did not see it on display. The store to have everything for model buildings, model train enthusiasts and remote controlled plane/boat/car/drone folks. The sole staffer there when I stopped seemed extremely knowledgeable about the remote control stuff he was explaining to the only other customer in the store who was exchanging some batteries /other parts and also appeared to by buying an remote controlled boat. The staffer was very kind to this other customer advising him to be very careful not to do such and such or some part would fail again and not be covered under warranty. It's a small quiet store so I was able to listen to this for 10 minutes as I browsed the first minute of which allowed me to conclude that the the item I wanted was not on display display. I then stood at the check out counter for a few minutes when the staffer began ringing up the other customer - a process seemingly complicated by the returns. NOT ONCE during this entire time did the staffer acknowledge my presence. I get this if I am browsing - which I was doing because I didn't want to interrupt his enhancement with the other customer. I do not get it when I am standing at the checkout area (1 long display counter) as he begins to enter the other customer's transaction. The phone rings and the staffer picks it up and engages for several minutes a customer asking questions about how many cans of spray paint it would take to repaint the bumper of a real car! Meanwhile I ask the other customer if he'd let me ask a super quick question when the staffer is off the phone. Other customer said yes. Staffer gets off the phone & returns to processing the other customer's stuff WITHOUT ACKNOWLEDGING that I am standing there (politely, smiling, not with my arms crossed). So I jump in with a very quick "Do you sell roll caps for a cap gun?" He replies "No." It took me 20 min to et that answer. Wtf? How hard can it be for a staffer to greet me when I enter the small shop (he was at the front check out display case by the door when I entered) and say "Can I help you with a something?" If my request is a biggie he just has to tell me that he needs to finish up with another customer. In my case he would have been able to answer right away & not produced this review. read more

The Hobby Works in Rockville Md. took my RC car in for repair. The parts I brought in with the car were somehow lost. If it was an accident I would understand. I would be happy to have worked with them on the situation. Unfortunately, the manager (James) chose to be rude and dismissive to me and about my situation. Where I grew up, we didn't have any hobby shops...presumably sitting on a bench at the town square was all the hobby one would need. I'm glad I no longer live around there, for it's a great world outside of that little town. My daughter and I were in Rockville and wandered into Hobby Works. Their Gundam selection is BEYOND COMPARE!!! AND...definitely priced well enough to cause me a bit of contemplation. Unlike somewhere else, where sticker shock kicks in quickly. The friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff answered all my questions and made me feel very welcome, even 20 minutes after closing time. The hours are plainly posted, but still, I totally missed noticing them on my way into the store. But like I said, they were nothing short of professional. I can't wait to get back there! read more

stopped by today to look for a specific item, could not find it because they ran out. Actually this seems to be kind of hard to find since hobby works was my third stop today. However I was very impressed with the superb customer service from the two guys behind the cashiers who went out of their way to help me by checking inventories and call other locations. Instead of saying " if you don't see it, we're probably out" like every other store clerk, the folks at hobby works really took their time--and was happy to do so. The store is small but filled with neat stuff from trains, cars, and airplane collectibles to plant and craft kits. Wind-up toys, kites, small thingamajigs, and so on. I've been trying to build a model of the electrical grid so I called the store and asked if they had power plants, transmission lines, etc (HO Scale). I work about 20 minutes away so I didn't want to waste a trip. They had what they said they had plus, once the manager got a sense of what I was looking for, he checked their other stores and told me what else they have. Within a few days, he called saying the additional models came in. I also told them I have never built a model so a few of the guys gave me a lesson on what glues to use, primers, etc. All in all, a really good experience. This weekend, my artistic spirit drove me to different places including a Music & Arts store, Michaels, The wood Artisans...etc, and I finally ended up at this Hobby shop. I must say that I was amazed by the people who work in this place. They were so helpful and passionate about their stuff, and God knows they have all sorts of cool stuff in this store. This young guy was telling me everything there is to know about RC Cars including local race tracks, and another older gentleman had a couple of people huddled up around him while he was talking about RC planes. I recently had a problem with a scale model where my decals where damaged and through many attempts to contact the manufacturer, could not find replacements. I spoke with a very helpful associate at the Rockville store and he personally contacted the manufacturer and had them shipped to the store.
