When you walk into a card and game shop, you expect at least some level of enthusiasm or willingness to help--especially with games like Pokémon, Magic, or Warhammer. Unfortunately, that just wasn't the case here. Customer service makes a big difference, and this experience completely turned me off from coming back.

I had always thought the store was more geared towards sports memorabilia but there truly is a little something for everyone here. My children were enamored by their large Pokemon collection, my husband loved all the vintage comic books, and for me there was a section with old records to browse through. We easily blew through an hour looking at everything in the store and let me tell you... my children are not patient people. By the end of our visit we had to pick up some items to help build up my pre-schooler's budding Pokemon collection and something for big sis too. I'm not a huge Lego enthusiast but if the giant Lego stores were Walmart or Costco, this place felt like a true hobbyist's boutique shop. Not a lot of real estate but packed with unique sets and collectibles. My son was here for birthday party which is hosted in the room in the back. He had a blast making Lego racecars and racing/crashing them down a giant ramp. Each kid got to design and build their own unique mini-figure to take home too! If you do have a party for little kids - their parents or staff will have to make sure they actually stay in the party room. Don't want them to accidentally knocking over anything like the $1000 Millenium Falcon on display.

Toy Trains! Model Kits! And all the other art sets, car tracks, European and Japanese toys and "Stuff." You know how a modern store just has people behind the counter? Hobby Works has staff walking the floor to help you. And they really help. And they know their stuff. And when you're there, it's got that friendly clubhouse atmosphere like you stopped off here while walking home from school in the 6th grade. Sometimes it feels like with online shopping, kids won't ever experience the friendly local stores like we did. Not while Hobby Works is open, it's all modern, but it's a shopping experience that most stores lost over the years- and our kids deserve to experience that friendliness.

In addition to the various hobby shop related wares - there are lots of neat little bits to the store - a miniature old school pinball machine; a little red wooden wagon mounted on the wall; upstairs on a door - a sign that painted with the words: "The Speakeasy," harkening back to an earlier time when a previous business conducted wine tastings and such upstairs at this location. During COVID, my partner and I did about a puzzle every week. We now have cases of puzzles that we did one time, then packed away! I brought a few, so we could swap them out for a few "easier" puzzles that my kids could do. It's such a cool idea and love it and came back with 3 kiddo options. The store is so wonderful, located right across the way from Eastern Market on Capitol Hill. All of the staff is not just incredibly friendly, but quick to offer advice on games and puzzles to take home. There is a room where you can attempt puzzles and games. We spent several hours here just enjoying all of the entertainment. It's a great rainy or snowy day activity. The bookstore just next door is a perfect pairing.
