Most expensive market you can find. Totally taking advantage of the public. "Greedy's" should be the name of this store. Price at the register is usually greater than the price on the shelf. Hot food deli items were being sold at half price after 7 pm. They aren't doing that anymore and choose to toss it in the trash instead. Every few years they shuffle ownership to a different family member in order to avoid Capital Gain tax. Just a real bummer this is what America has come to. I'm giving it a three because of a worker named April. Dana is wonderful and has been a pleasure the past two months. I will now be cautious when I shop here because of April and made sure to go into the store today so I knew what she looked like because my husband went inside asking a question and she lost her cool and responded aggressively. All she had to do was say it with kindness, there was no reason for her bad behavior. She will get reported, other than April this Deli is a treasure for Scotia. I recommend this market for their deli sandwiches and their breakfast burritos.. but the prices have gone up quite a bit...I can't recommend it as a main grocery store as the prices are much higher than Safeway, which we all know is expensive enough. $8 for a gallon of milk? Might be worth taking a bus to Fortuna, especially if you have alot of children who drink milk. The prices are too high. read more

It is okay. You can buy gas, ice and food here. Drove here from Willits and this was the first decent market/grocery store I had seen in an hour. The next nearest grocery store (Safeway) is 15 minutes away in Fortuna. The market is only 3-4 isles long. Fairly small for a market but large for a gas station I guess. They serve hot food and sandwiches as well. Cashiers were super friendly. Downside: it was dirty and the place had an odd smell. Additionally some of the customers were not the greatest people. The parking lot seemed like a hang out for travelers or locals and they were not nice people. read more

One star for being open and accurate on the posted hours. Been getting a lot of press lately over the butcher..it's awful..beyond a health issue. Outdated meats mixed in with today's wraps. Sloppy wrapped packaged cuts dripping with meat juice soon sloppy...grates and shelves under the meat never cleaned stained and covered with this year's meat juice. Produce constantly wilting and rotting in place. Evidence of a massive rodent issue all over the canned foods.. I returned a package of 20 day old chicken thighs the same day I bought them...he told me to just swap them out. I explained they were foul and someone must have missed them when rotating tock. He said "then get another one" as if it wasn't a big deal. I had to ask him to take the foul package of thighs and properly dispose of them..he opened them, smelled them, and shrugged his shoulders as if it was no big deal. When he turned around offended that I interrupted his ball game on the airwaves he didn't throw them to the trash in front of him..no..he moved them back to the prep table as if to rewrap as soon as I left. While on a road trip from Washington to Los Angeles, I decided to stop by this cool little supermarket to grab a few snacks. The outside of this building is all redwood. Heck a lot of the buildings in the town are made with wood. It's no wonder since the town was a company town that the local timber mill supported. As far as a small town market goes this place sells pretty much everything that you are looking for. It has a nice deli, some warn food, and a small produce area. After checking out the deli, I decided to rest my bones here for a few minutes and grab a turkey sandwich for lunch. I like how they take your sandwich order, by you filling out a simple piece of paper and checking off all the things that you want. It makes it easy to go back to shopping, while your sandwich is being prepared. This place even has a small dry cleaners and laundry service in it. How cool is that? read more

A step up from a convenience store. Has the basics like breads, crackers, dairy, meats, etc. There's also a small deli/bakery with freshly prepared foods. When I came at four in the afternoon they were already out of a lot of their soups like the clam chowder and the chili, but they did have taco soup. This was a first for me, as I've always consumed my tacos in solid form, not liquid, But this taco soup was hot, fresh, and delicious. Made from scratch. Bright spot in Scotia. read more

I buy the 'MEAT BOX' from the local butcher. The butcher 'Rich' is very helpful and friendly. The meat is prime cuts, tender and oh so good. Can't beat the price per pound, either!!! The prices are a bit high but this is a very rural area of the Ancient Redwoods on the Lost Coast of Northern California. That said, the store has a hometown feel to it. Great Deli who will make bow tie feta salad for a big family gathering. Nice out door breakfast/lunch area across from the Scotia Inn. Also hot food to go including boiled eggs, YUM!!! From medicine to children's toys, liquor to toilet plungers, they got it all, even an old fashioned butcher shop. The sandwiches in the Deli are outstanding! The people are pretty cool too. Pass on buy for food, What a gem? A is dirty, filthy. Look at where the food is being made, it has not been cleaned in years. Junk piled up. Cutting board has not been cleaned in a long time. Cheap meats , bad service, dirty clothing, they talk about all the customers when we were there. Maybe you need a few groceries, but do not eat there, next door at the Inn is where to go. We threw out hamburger special in trash, old, old French fry's, bad pasta salad, old. So disappointed in the overall service. Just people who show up and do not care. What a little gem. Wish we had come here first instead of driving into Fortuna for the Safeway. Prices are good, deli is awesome. Turkey sandwich was super yummy and the Taco Soup made fresh on Thursday was great. Have a fresh berry pie for dessert tonight, I have no doubts that it will be great. We are in a motorhome at Ancient Redwoods. Meat department looked good, produce was adequate, deli the highlight, selection of all other goods very adequate for a small market in a small town. This is the place to buy meat! The best prices hands down! I know it sounds like I work there but nope... they really really have the best prices on meat. They also have a very good selection of meat. They have buffalo, chicken, beef, rabbit, turkey, pork, fish and I'm sure there is more that I cant think of. The butcher's are my personal favorite. They are super helpful and if you want it they will do their best to deliver. It's worth the drive to Scotia and you can see the pretty little town too! read more

The Friendly staff is what keeps me going back. They have a good deli and the prices seem to be a bit better now with new ownership. I don't have to drive all the way to Fortuna to get a loaf of bread under $5 anymore - The wine selection desperately needs an up grade. Would like to see some Frog Alley (Ferndale) wine in stock. Beer prices beat CC market. I avoid the meat dept - no Angus beef there and the odor sometimes is a huge turn off. Bottom line.. I always run into someone I know and its a friendly place all around. My review is for the meat department. We needed to buy steaks for a family gathering and a friend recommended that we check this market out on our way south of Eureka. The lady serving us pointed out the pack of 3 big good looking steaks and garenteed that they would be tender. Best steak I had for a long time! Very tender and super tasty. THE DELI IS DISGUSTING Have driven by many times and since the choices a bit limited in the area, thought we'd pop in and grab a quick lunch. Didn't shop so can't say anything about the market, but the deli area and food is gross. Hub tried the lunch special, hamburger, fries and small soda. It was funny watching the grumpy girl make the burger. The patty is "cooked" in a room in back. She carried it out on a spatula and plopped it on the upside down bun. With bare hands, placed the lukewarm condiments on it...scooped stale, cool crinkle cut fries out of the case and threw them in the container and then tossed it onto the counter. And, continued to eat her fries at the same time!!!! I thought the safer choice would be a pasta salad in the display. Nope. Rancid salami and obviously not made there. The one picnic table outside is surrounded by trash. Jeez another Humboldt establishment that has NO pride. read more

Hoby's is a local market that i utilize fairly often since it is nearby my home and convenient. I was just in there this evening (3/8/14 @ 440pm) to pick up a few items and while shopping i witnessed one butcher behind the meat counter toss a packaged steak across the meat counter to a young man stocking the meat area. The male missed the meat being thrown at him and it landed on the floor. The male then picked it up without hesitation and stocked it for sale along with the rest of his items. They were joking and laughing about him being a bad catch. If this is acceptable practice to do in front of a customer, i have to wonder what goes on behind the meat counter that i do not see. I have been a loyal customer for more than 8 years, and have noticed a decline in overall service since the ownership exchange. This witnessed lack of concern for health and safety of customers quite frankly angers me and i will be shopping at a closer, grocery store and discard my loyalty as they disregarded their integrity to their customers. read more
