Thank goodness for the Petrolia Store. It is the only place in Petrolia to get fuel, snacks, beer, merchandise from local organizations and also local produce and locally made products. The lovely ladies working there are always nice and happy to answer any questions. read more

I stopped at the Petrolia general store for food and supplies while traveling by bicycle through the Lost Coast. Supplies are limited in the area so at first I was just grateful to learn that a store existed here. The store is not large, but has all the essentials you could need. Most importantly, the staff was so kind! The woman managing the store saw us taking pictures with our bikes outside and came out to offer to take some pictures my group together. We chatted for a bit and she was so kind. Highly recommend stopping in if you are traveling through petrolia! read more

This cute little store was an absolute life saver. We traveled down the coast from Washington and didn't realize there wasn't much after turning on Wildcat. A local pointed us in the direction of this store in town and they were so helpful there. The nice cashier lady told me she can start the pump for me and to come pay in cash after words. (Gas is 11am-5pm & cash only!!) They had creative stickers, fresh produce, muffins, coffee, and other snacks & beverages. Perfect place to get ready for the road trip ahead. They are not there to cater to your every single emotion like other reviews think... they provide products for the coast and do an excellent job! read more

This little store is a gem! The bad reviews are from people who don't realize that personality is part of the charm. Sure you might get a surly attitude occasionally but they aren't here to prop up your delicate self esteem. They provide supplies at the end of the dang continent. And they do a great job. The variety of items is surprising and they will go out of their way to help you. Try a sandwich, get some pretty jewelry. Buy a friend a hoodie. The drive out the Wildcat is epic in its beauty and the store is a fun and functional part of what should be a wonderful adventure. read more

"Did we pack water??" "Crap!!! No!" "Ummm....did we pack toilet paper" "D'oh!" When traveling to the fabled northern California's Lost Coast these are some questions which may come up while driving to the trailhead for a camping trip. Fortunately, all is not all grim. For, within a few miles of the Lost Coast trail head, there is the quaint (and microscopic) town of Petrolia. There isn't much in this town, but there is the Petrolia General Store....our salvation. If you manage to forget any gear for your adventure on the Lost Coast this is your last stop for picking up anything. We ended up picking up a few big bottles of water, some Lost Coast postcards, and some tobacco (there was a pipe smoker amongst us). This store has just about everything one may need. There's a very decent selection of beer, some wine, and all kinds of small-grocery fare you might need (s'more marshmallows, anyone?). The employees are very nice, and I've always made an effort to stop here for atleast some sort of treat for the trail later. read more

After I hiked the Lost Coast trail I went here to replenish my depleted body. I grabbed a couple jerky sticks, an orange, and two Eel River pale ales. The lady working the cash register was straight out of a Clive Barker horror film. She didn't know the price of the jerky and then got aggro when I did her the favor of finding out the price. Then, after I paid for the groceries and told her to have a nice day she gave me this hostile death stare. The beer was cheap and delicious, one star for each. No props for the cold as ice service. read more

Wow I don't know what to say..have always loved coming here. Took my wife's visiting friends on a trip after breakfast and a quick Starbucks in Fortuna. Took the wildcat to petrolia beach past steamboat rock and on up to the general store. My wife was about to use the ATM and her friend was about to begin browsing snack selections and finishing her coffee cup tossed it into the trash can and a napkin as well. The cashier rushed out from the back room, and yelled rudely "no personal trash" then immediately without any dialogue stormed off into the back and disappeared again. They dug the 12oz to-go cup and napkin from the trash and loudly responded in kind unkindly and left. Imitation back to the land/meth strewn local attitudes permeate the rurals of this county. Petrolia in past a gem, has once again sunk to the level of the "bowels of Humboldt County" and Humboldt as we that live here currently know is the septic system of California. A little dialog and kindness goes a long way towards customer service/satisfaction and repeat business. "Hi we don't allow personal trash, it's a real problem here, can I help you find anything?" Would have served perfectly in this situation. Iron sharpens iron, subpar brings subpar, this brings our hard earned dollars simply, well, never again. Thanks but no thanks. read more

Keep driving right on by...They simply do not care nor desire your business. Strike one: No coffee in the late morning. Strike two: 2 people working and we sat there for 15 minutes with one person ahead of us with a hand full of items, and one empty handed person. No glimpse towards our way. No smiles. No acknowledgement. Strike three: 16 minutes go by and the counter person is still chit chatting idle talk with person with handful of things at counter. Empty handed person still standing waiting in front of us. We put our items away and walk out. We went onto Mattole campground and met a couple who had an identical experience as ours. It was almost like it was OUR experience! They walked out of the store after long wait, no coffee and no smiles. Do yourself a favor, keep driving! read more

This store has everything...then again it is the only thing in Petrolia that's a commercial space. We came here for our bear box rentals ($5/trip) for our Lost Coast backpacking trip. But they also are a post office, a grocery store, a coffee shop, a sandwich shop, a convenience store, and a video store...and I think they sell gas. The ladies that were running the place were extremely hospitable and pleasant...even AFTER we backed up their septic tank. read more

Use the other gas station, it's only 2-3 miles away on the same road. I told them I wanted $8 worth of gas and paid for it, they never told me I had to manually stop the pump on my own so it ended up filling up my whole tank. I had to go in and pay the extra $50 that I didn't have, and the gas ruined the injectors in my car. Don't buy gas here they are terrible. read more

A few years ago I went thru Petrolia and patrontized the general store. They had a bumper sticker I liked. It read "Shift Happens". I bought one and took it back to Massachusetts and put it on my car. The geologists in Woods Hole understood and most nobody else enquired. Then I had to sell that car. The fine folks at the Petrolia General Store were delighted to exchange a small cash donating in an envelope for another bumper sticker but they didn't have any on hand. About a year later one appeared in my mail box, unannounced, when they finally got in a new printing. Long memories in purveyors of goods to captive audiences are unusual. I recommend the Petrolia General Store and don't forget to get your bumper sticker. read more

Yah the petrolia store is the best store in the world...I would give it six stars...but I can't . mark and corey are right. the nicest ladies in the world run this store. and they make the best roast beef sandwiches. johns tri tip isn't bad either. read more
