A substantial, freshly made breakfast wrap with fluffy but under seasoned eggs, bacon, and cheese. Enough to share, but you won't want to.
    Rob P.

I spent some time looking for something to eat for breakfast at the airport. Coffee shop: muffins. Coffee shop: bagels and muffins. McDonalds: well, you know what they have. I walked right by Hockeytown Cafe, thinking, "It's 7:45 in the morning: I don't want a beer." But, I came back because I saw people eating. Was it just bar food, or did they have breakfast? They did! Omelets, hash browns, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast wraps, with choices of bacon, sausage, and different cheeses. Best of all, the food is freshly prepared. And, it's fast: they know you have a flight to catch. My breakfast wrap was bacon and cheddar, with fluffy (but under salted) eggs and a fair amount of bacon and cheese. There's a lot of food here for $9 (for an airport, the price isn't bad). I could have split it with someone and both of us would have been satisfied....but it was so good that I ate the whole thing. I got a Bloody Mary (yeah, I remember what I said about not wanting a beer, but this is different because it's breakfast...right?) which was more like tomato juice: not at all spicy. Another $9...again, not bad for airport prices. Not bad, Hockeytown Cafe. Not bad.

It was the only decent place to get some beer and food in that area of DTW close to our departure gate so we found a good spot and ordered. I was impressed with the PATTY MELT. It was a basic sandwich but it was super tasty and not salty at all. It was sinfully good with all the buttery taste. Paired with deep fried onion rings, everything was good but definitely unhealthy. The serving was good for 2 non-big eaters. The lady staff was attentive and fast. Worth the try!

I didn't come here with high expectations.... I came here wanting a drink and a snack before my flight, and given that the entire theme of my trip to Detroit was celebrating the last couple of games at the JLA, HockeyTown Cafe seemed fitting. My cider was only $6.50, which is pretty good for a bottle in an airport. The hubby got a pint of Blue Moon and it was $10.25, but after paying concession stand beer prices all weekend that didn't seem too outrageous. We also got an order of Olympia Nachos, which were standard mass-produced tortilla chips covered in what I assume was a crumbled up hamburger instead of ground beef, along with the usual toppings - cheese, tomato, jalapenos, salsa. It wasn't gourmet by any means but it paired well with the drinks, and we left the bar ready to spend the next 2 hours on a plane.

I won't go into detail for the sake of time. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. I promise, you will thank me.

Mixed report on this visit to the airport version of the Detroit icon. Service was quick and just attentive enough. Prices were surprisingly reasonable & the beer I chose, Latitude 42's I.P. Eh was perfect. The wings, called "Red Wings" were highly disappointing. Dry and overcooked, the hot sauce made them edible. They certainly didn't live up to their name, but then ... the Wings did miss the playoffs.

The confirmation text didn't come through until we were already inside, which might be bad reception, but it almost cost us the table. Then they sat us right across from the back kitchen entrance. Banging, yelling, and an open doorway into the kitchen. Off-putting, especially with better seating clearly open. The food keeps the rating up. I did not expect a wings place, but the smoked wings were my favorite, right amount of crispy with good smoke. The sauce list is long and I couldn't pick a favorite. The ranch tasted house-made and it was amazing. The chikin soho was the other standout. Honey ginger glaze, chili dijon slaw, and pickles that all work together. Misses: the brisket nachos needed fresh guac and actual brisket, since there was barely any. The 6 cheese mac was fine but not worth ordering again. Prices were right for what it is, a bistro concept. It's in Wayne, which surprised me since I didn't know spots like this existed out here. Wide enough menu that I'll be back. Next time I'm speaking up about the seating.

No choking was done here (thank god) but there were some things that jumped out to us. First is the setup, it looked like a place trying to be fancy when you walk in only to realize they give up on that when you get to the tables. Plain white walls with no seats at the high top tables near the bar and chairs in a disheveled manner, it looked like someone made a half-effort to clean the aftermath of a house party gone crazy for their parents about to arrive. Fortunately they sat us at a booth near the bar which thankfully was set up with silverware and such. As for service, we had an attentive server but she was handling the tables at the bar plus the bar itself and had to make all the drinks for people. Made me realize why I'm glad I'm no longer in the service industry with all the running around. My first glass of wine came quickly as did my dad's iced tea but refills took some time so yes, getting beverages or quick items took patience. I will give her an 'A' for effort as she ran faster than the Lions defenders trying to recover a fumble. Now the eats, we started with buffalo & sesame soy wings which my Dad loved but I thought eh, maybe it was the size of them and how some were crispy and some were tender. Afterwards, we got entrees: Me: Memphis BBQ Burger w/ Baked Potato and side of Broccoli Dad: Detroit Sliders w/ Onion Rings and side of Broccoli The burger was surprisingly tender and a perfect Medium and the BBQ sauce and crispy onions with bacon was a nice touch. Dad thought the sliders were ok; a bit bland. But he loved the onion rings as did I. The Broccoli was also tasty too; who says veggies have to be boring!? After dinner, we got a pecan pie for dessert (free dessert with check-in) and I added an irish coffee to help wash things down. The pie was excellent; the best part of the meal in my opinion. So the food is hit/miss but the food/drink prices are favorable. Plus the free dessert upon check-in is dope. Should I stay in this area again, I would probably pop back in for some cheap drinks and a quick bite.
