HBC has been the stalwart bike shop of Tippecanoe County for the last thirty+ years. Great service department, the top bike lines, and a full commitment to support cycling activities in the area. Road, Mountain, Trail and Triathlon are all here, and prices are competitive for a full-service retail store. Probably have 200 bikes on stock at any given time. Basic clothing and a good spread of accessories for the sport rider and commuter too. A smattering of camping and climbing gear exists but for these guys the bike comes first last and always. The thing that sets HBC apart is that it is a serious bike store, not just a bike shop. Yes, it has a great guy running the place, just like the other shops. Yes, they have their quirks and a history that runs deeper than the Marianas Trench. But the great thing about HBC is that you can be a person of just about any ability or aspiration in cycling, and walk out after one visit with pretty much exactly what you needed or wanted at a fair price. That is no mean feat in today's online-dominated, razor-thin margin environment. Lafayette and Tippco are amazingly well-served by HBC. It's a bit like finding a Chevy dealer in a tiny town surrounded by cornfields, that also sells Ferarri and Jaguar. Virtuous Cycles downtown is a great bike shop too, with a better clothing selection, great people and some great bikes. I visit them too. But I always start at HBC. read more

We have been to Hodson's Bay twice for bike repairs. This place is wonderful! Dave helped us. My son had his wheel and seat stolen from his bike. All sorts were available, so Dave got us fixed up while we ate lunch next door. He even recommended ways to prevent theft in the future. AMAZING customer service!!!! My son and husband tried to ship a bike back home to Los Angeles. Fed Ex and UPS refused to assist them with packing the bike even though the websites say they offer that service. After some Internet research, they scrambled and found Hodson's Bay. Thank God for these amazing people!! They dissembled the bike, packed it up and even offered to print out the shipping label. Dave and his team are they only people in the area that I trust for bike parts, tools and maintenance! They've serviced everything from my 45 year old road bike to my new mountain bike and without fail they always what I need, when I need it and for a competitive price. If that wasn't good enough, Dave always shoots you straight and has on numerous occasions actually talked me out of unnecessary upgrades or services when I'd asked for them. Most other shops would just shut up and take your money but Hodson's is better than that. Went here to find our son a bicycle when we left him to start school. First had tried Walmart but terribly disappointed in the quality of their bikes. Gave this place a shot though we did not want to sink a lot into a bicycle that would probably be left outside to deteriorate. Found the owner to be extremely informative, accommodating, and the prices were incredibly fair and reasonable. I believe my son has gone back with a question about some gearing issues and they have been most helpful. We bought a bike for my daughter's first year at Purdue. We live 1500 miles away. They insisted that if anything went wrong, she should contact them right away and they would help. Two weeks into school one of the brake lines separated from the mechanism. They sent someone to the campus to meet her and repair it for us. They were super awesome! Cannot thank them enough! Although under new ownership, not much has changed. It's still the same great store that it has been for the last 15 years I've been a customer. Dave, the new owner is just as friendly and customer-oriented as the former owners. His ideals match those which the shop has historically prided itself on; supporting rider development, community-mindfulness, expanding the sport of cycling, and providing quality products and service at fair prices. Jade, the service manager, is an excellent mechanic and performs quality work. Whether it's a minor tune-up or a full repair job after being run over by a texting teenager, he and his team are up to the task and complete work in a timely manner. Excellent customer service. I recently came in to purchase a road bike as a surprise for my husband for his birthday. They helped me determine what size bike was appropriate for him, and ordered it for me as they didn't have that size in the store. I even asked the owner if he would honor a sale I had just missed by a couple of days (having 2 toddlers can make stop-ins difficult) and he did; every $ helps. The day of my husbands birthday I stopped in and asked if I could leave it out with some cards and a bow and stop in and surprise him and they said no problem - just an added bonus letting me do that. Friendly staff, good repair prices, but it took far too long, especially considering I use the bike to commute. I took it to the repair shop on Friday the 16th, and they told me it would be done the 20th. However, the repair wasn't actually complete until today (the 6th of the following month), despite telling me multiple different dates it would be ready by. Good store if you want friendly service, but definitely not good if you need it repaired efficiently. read more

This is the best bike store! Chris came out to Purdue University campus to help my daughter with her bike. My daughter relies on her bike to get to class. When her backpack got caught in the front wheel brakes, she called and Chris immediately came out to where the bike broke and fixed it on the spot. Thank you Chris! As long as you know exactly what you want them to do, I do indeed recommend them. They are thinly staffed in the summer (Purdue student employees) which I can understand, but it can make them a bit... distracted. So I wouldn't give them a vague "It makes noise, can you fix it?" They treated me very well, but there are a few things about my bike's behavior which do make me go, "Did you actually look at this?". I asked for a general go through for a long trip and I have nothing that tells me they did but then I have nothing that says they didn't either. That being said, the tire replacement was done well and the replacement of my squeeaky grindy pedal cog assembly was great. Prices are very competitive and the work was done reasonably quickly (see Purdue summer employment challenge ;-) I must not have been too unhappy, I went back to them to buy replacement cables for my second bike. read more

I went there the first time and picked up my bike and thought it looked good, little did I know that some of the parts they put in my bike couldn't even last three months because they were put in the wrong way and done incorrectly. I got a brand new inner tube on my bike, it blew out less than two weeks later. They replaced it and put on a better one which hopefully lasts longer. I had the original inner tube on the bike for 5 years without any problem. I went there multiple times to get my bike fixed and they could not do it right the first time or any of the other times. The owner himself was very unfriendly and rude, and accused of several things that were just plain false. He claimed that his mechanics would not leave it in such poor condition, but they did and it broke less than a month later. They had someone work on my bike who was not supposed to be working on my bike. I had my bike working properly for 5 years, and the moment I give it to this bike shop to tune-up things start going wrong. Would not recommend to other people. read more

There's not much you can say about a bike shop but what I can say is that their service department is very good. The guy that took my bike in was really honest and even though I initially told him I wanted a full tune-up on my Giant he told me I didn't need it so he just put the order for the tube that needed to be replaced, some lubrication, and checking the gears. The price was very fair and they did a good job. The only complaint that I have is that they never called me to let me know that it was ready as they told me when I took my bike in but not a big deal. Unless I find something better this is going to be my bike shop during my time here. read more

Even though it wasn't in their normal stock, Dave found and ordered the bike I wanted and took lots of time out of his schedule to make sure everything fit and worked perfectly for my race. This store has to be one of the most useful businesses in the Purdue area. With thousands of students riding bicycles, Hodson's Bay is the best place to go for any repairs or equipment needed. This store sells bicycles and bicycle parts, clothing, repairs damaged bicycles, and has a huge selection of other outdoor goods. Whenever I need something for my bicycles, I don't hesitate to take it to this company. They are friendly, their prices are great, and they know exactly what they are doing. The owner couldn't be more friendly. It's around $5 for basic help, i.e., handlebar sizing, tube repair, et cetera, and bicycles ranging from $200 to $2000. This company has everything that you need for biking--whether it be mountain biking, casual riding, or road cycling. Not to mention at a great location for Purdue students. I highly recommend this store for all of your bicycle wants and needs. read more

They carry the major well known bike brands (Trek, Specialized, Giant) Being a larger shop they have both great helpful employees and some that are not so good. If you get to deal with the good ones you will have a great experience. Their service department is always reliable. read more

I only gave it 1 star because there was no lesser option... I JUST left this store with the idea of learning more about cycling and with the hopes of leaving with a bike. Instead, I walked in, walked the entire interior of the business, crossed paths with four separate employees (some more than once) and at no time was my presence in the store even acknowledged even after making eye contact with 3 of the 4. The fourth simply sat behind the front counter on his fancy Apple computer and never bothered to lift his head. With only one other customer in the store, one would think that they would be tripping over themselves to offer me assistance. This was a horrible first impression from a customer service standpoint. Great selections of new bikes but I don't recommend buying one because God forbid something goes wrong with it you may never get it fixed. I bought a brand-new bike in the summer of 2013 and it had a defective hub on the back I ordered a warrantee replacement part and every time I called it wasn't in.
