I have been to this business once before but had not left a review. First, this is a multigenerational business and they know their customers. A broad variety of hot and cold entrees, a beverage bar, and full bakery make Hoeckele's a destination location. Today, I had an iced chai latte to accompany my lunch, a pretzel melt. The turkey was fresh, the bacon exceptional, and the pretzel itself soft and savory. A great sandwich, and I picked their potato salad as a side. It tasted homemade and was creamy, a good balance to the melt. I will certainly pick out some pastries to take with. The cookies were nasty. We bought 3 and they were inedible to say the least. My icing was 2 different colors and was cold as if it had been frozen. The cookie was bland. It's a very old style donut/deli/cookie place. As we were eating our cookies, they were slamming a bucket of cleaning water near our table as if they were trying to get us to leave, so we did. Massive waste of money. Definitely will not return. read more

I have only been to this place once, last Sunday. I get that it was Mother's Day, but we had to place our order 3 times. And it was amazing that they did not get my order at all. When I asked about my order after all the people in my party had finished eating. I restated my order AGAIN, and what they charged me for, it wasn't at all what I ordered! One of my party suggested that the waiter compensate me with a cupcake or something along those lines. What was brought out to me was a very small FROZEN chocolate chip cookie. And he mentioned that I might want to let it thaw prior to eating it. read more

I'm giving it a star because the food we did receive was decent. We went here on Mother's Day. Had to go back and give our order twice because of some kind of computer issue. When we received our food only part of it came. Wouldn't you know mom's order was not received. She went back to the counter to reorder her turkey avocado. By the time mom got here food everybody was done eating and her order was wrong. No avocado but they did put bacon on it. ( she doesn't eat bacon). I went up to the counter to try and make things right. The very nice going man said he would see what he could do a few minutes later he came to our table with a condiment container of avocado. Mom was done by this time she wasn't even interested in eating her sandwich. I tell the guy hey it's Mother's Day why don't you see if you can give her a cupcake or pastry or something and we'll call it all good. He shows back up to our table with a frozen chocolate chip cookie ( not even a good one ) and said happy Mother's Day. Not a very good experience. Where has this place been all my life. In town this week for business I look up places to get 2 dozen doughnuts and found this gold mine. Got a breakfast sandwich for myself and it was fine. Nothing fancy and probably $1 more than it should be but I'd eat it again. The pastries, doughnuts and cookies are banging. I will be back probably more than once while here. I will also then go by the local Walmart to get a new belt cause I'm going to need it for the flight home. Service was great. Nice friendly staff. read more

They have a ton of different kinds and their cake donuts they glaze and then ice them so if you don't like their donuts then you just don't love donuts lol. This is by far the worst bakery I have ever visited. For a place that is known for donuts, they are ALWAYS out of donuts. Also, they barely put anything on their sandwiches. When I told them they forgot to put something on my sandwich, they dismissed me and said it's not their problem and that they can't refund me for one missing topping. They weren't even apologetic about it. Also, this place is extremely outdated and could use a remodel. It's run by a bunch of teenagers that don't know what they're doing. The only reason they're doing business and aren't shut down is cause there are no competitors in town. A Dunkin in town would kill this place. read more

OK...so the locals think this place is amazing. While traveling through, everyone told me I HAD TO TRY IT,.... I've heard so much about it. Me, from out of state (lived all over the world & U.S) thought it would be as amazing....IT IS NOT. I tried it 3 times over the month of May. My coworker ordered a custom small cake (for another coworker), a few doughnuts, and coffees. Nope. The cake was HORRIBLE. Limited options on ordering, and the icing was disgusting. Honestly, WalMart bakeries have better cakes. Doughnuts? I guess it's a local preference...not a fan. The coffees were SO sweet...they looked cute, but the creamer/flavoring was TOO much. So, out of the 3 times I tried it in May, all were mediocre at best. Cute, plain place (lots of brown leaky spots on the ceiling, though). Their entire staff seemed to be made up of high school students. The restaurant was clean, but honestly the food was subpar. (Maybe it's legit good for a small town, but not nearly as good as may other places.) read more

Very basic deli found amidst a long drive back to St Louis. While I didn't have the highest of expectations pulling up to the Deli and ordering through their drive through, I still expected a bit more from my food. Ordered the tuna salad sandwich on a butter croissant and it was pretty poor quality. The tuna salad was very watered down and soaked through my croissant, leaving a mess. Normally, I wouldn't care about this given the location and overall decor, but the price paid ($8) was quite steep for a small sandwich of this caliber. I wouldn't recommend coming here. Check out some of the other spots in the area (e.g. Taco Bell which, no joke, was actually quite decent)! read more

While on a road trip from Memphis back up to Chicago, I was desperately needing coffee and saw a billboard for Hoeckle's. Fortuitous, no? The shop ended up being several, several, *several* miles after the billboard, but I found it! I was here on a Tuesday afternoon and it was empty, and the girls behind the counter were extremely sweet as I tried to decide on a donut. I ended up just with a simple vanilla iced donut, as one of the girls said it was their personal favorite. Along with it I ordered an iced coffee with some almond milk, which of course was a fantastic addition. This spot is inexpensive, large inside with many tables, and has a wide selection of donuts and pastries. A nice little stop or place to chill for a bit! read more

I'm one for second chances, which is why I came back in for the peanut coffee cake on the way back from my trip. It was super cheap at $1.80 for a least six servings. Cutting it up, I noticed that the amount of yeasty coffee cake was super thick with a thin layer of frosting on top, and the peanuts were scarce. The best comparison of eating this coffee cake was like eating a dry yeast donut and wishing you had another layer of frosting. Of the two parts of the coffee cake--cake and frosting--the frosting was more tasty, but I didn't get enough of it!
