Ok. What happened to this place? This used to be our go to place whenever we would Drive through Amarillo twice a year, we stopped tonight to get our favorite burger and wow! Great afternoon stop! On our way back to Tulsa from Tucson and I wanted to try something different and Amarillo was our target to stop. Nestled amongst the chain restaurants right along I-40 was this gem. It has been there for a number of years and the moment you walk in you get an old west tavern feel. We opted to sit in the bar area after the booths were a bit cramped for my circular shape as this place was built in an era where the tables don't slide! The bar area was open and comfortable. I ordered a happy hour beer and my wife got a margarita. We opted out of any appetizers but I was very tempted to order the house chips. I ordered the hand battered chicken fried steak with cheesy grits and a salad. My wife had the smoked ribeye with roasted corn and a salad. Both were from the lunch menu so the portions were appropriate for the time of day. Our salads were nicely sized, fresh and a perfect companion to the main course. We were served rolls with the salads. By the way my wife cleaned them up I presume they were pretty good! The CFS was tender, well-seasoned and covered in a nicely flavored gravy. It included two slices of buttered white toast as well. Very Texas! The cheesy grits were a nice side as there was just the right amount of cheese to grits ratio. My wife's smoked ribeye looked good but she said it lacked a bit on flavor. She split the roasted corn with me and it was just about perfect. Pretty standard offerings. I did come for one reason alone (the green chili chicken fries steak). So the execution was not exactly what I thought but the flavor was terrific. Zero complaints. Coming from NM to Texas for the weekend and was craving a good chicken fried steak. This was the first place I came to. The chicken fried steak was very good and a nice size. I had the grilled corn and it was very delicious as was the mashed potatoes. The service was outstanding and the food came out pretty quick for it being around lunch time. My only problem is with the butter they gave me for the bread. It was cold, so it was hard to spread on the bread. This isn't the only place that does this. Fun decor-old doors on the ceiling. The restaurant has two private/big rooms towards the back. The smoked sirloin was absolutely amazing-literally the best steak I've had in I don't even know how long. Cooked perfectly medium rare. Sides were good. Fried onion appetizer was yummy-our young kids ate them up! Complimentary bread is a sweet wheat-very good when hot. I ordered a 10 oz ribeye, baked potato with a house salad. The steak was maybe seven inches round and less than an half inch with tons of grainy spices on top. The favor was not that good and there was a piece of gristle right in the middle of the steak. I would describe the meat as a tough skirt steak. I believe they pulled a bait and switch, but that's just my opinion. The potato was lukewarm warm and looked like it had been sitting in a pan for quite some time. They brought us wheat bread rolls that were gummy in texture. The house salad was actually good and the blue cheese dressing was great. I also had an order of limp greasy fries. I could not stomach finishing them. The other people at my table also had a disappointing meals. One had the pressed chicken meat chick fried chicken. She didn't finish that mess. The other wanted ribs but was told the restaurant was out of them so he ordered a pork chop. He did not enjoy his meal, too tough. I paid $88+ for a very disappointing meal. The service was good and friendly. Don't eat at this aging restaurant because you will waste your money for overpriced substandard food. 5/30: The response given by the owner is a typical response. Apparently, his only action is to ensure the employees are informed so there is not a repeat. He pretty much says this every time. He just blowing smoke giving the impression he really cares. I'm a big fan of this place. I was cajoled into coming here with a local and it turns out, they were right. This is probably one of Amarillos best restaurants. The bread is excellent. Their steaks are always cooked perfect (so far) and the service has been excellent every time. The inside reminds me of a Texas Roadhouse kind of. Not too fancy so you can enjoy your meal without a tie. Anyway, if you're passing through on 40, give it a try. I bet you'll like the bread too! read more

This restaurant was a major surprise that I never saw coming! I tend to avoid any restaurant that is a chain as a rule as the food tends to be overpromised yet under delivers and the staff doesn't tend to care as long as they get a paycheck. I didn't know anything about Hoffbrau except that it had a few locations so to me it meant chain restaurant but we were hungry from traveling and it was near the hotel so I gave in when the husband picked it. Let me just say that it was the best surprise I've had in a longtime! I expected it to be loud and full of college kids drinking on a Friday night to start the Memorial Day weekend but it was oddly intimate and friendly. The menu was full of appetizing choices at great prices too! We had scheduled an escape room adventure for after dinner so I was worried about getting too full so I ordered two appetizers to pick at for my meal: the candied bacon and the cream of broccoli soup. Let me tell you: you NEED to eat BOTH the candied bacon and the cream of broccoli soup before you die. I don't care if you are a vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, diabetic, etc. If you die from sugar intake due to the candied bacon, you'll die happy because it was WORTH it! I shared the candied bacon with my husband and we both agreed it was better than S.E.X! And that's saying a lot! Cream of broccoli soup is my favorite all-time soup and I am PiCkY when it comes to getting it right! It has to be the right thickness, temperature, amount of broccoli, etc and this was PERFECTION worthy of a Top Chef All Stars Finale Competition. The blue cheese dressing was good but I wished my salad had been colder and crisp. Shortly after my meal came. My steak was cooked perfect medium rare and was a nice thick cut.
