First time being here to try my first cigar with my friends. Had a decent selection of cigars, nice patio to hangout and smoke your cigars. Person working there was nice but not helpful and guiding us to the different types of cigars they had in stock especially since we've never done it before. So, under new ownership and it's night and day better. The rear patio is open for a cigar and wine which is nice. Good selection of cigars and wine and beer. But mostly it's now a good hang. I'm so glad public square stepped in to reopen this hidden gem in LM! Great beer selection and cellar collection. Check out some of these mikeller beers from years ago that you won't be able to find anywhere now that they left. Service was great and the beer tenders are super knowledgeable. Ambiance hasn't changed much from 2020 much(that was a long time ago) but the beer and cigar selection speaks for itself. read more

Hoffers reopened in February of 2025! With the help of Public Square Coffee Shop and Shannon and her husband Brandon. They have done such a great job at keeping the original charm of Hoffers, while giving it a much needed remodel. Shannon has such a unique beer/ wine selection and is always on top of the best beers to put on tap. Including my favorite, Mate Maker Kombucha! You can bring food in to eat, but on Friday's you can order slices from Pierre's pizza that will deliver from Public Square. It's such a nostalgic little place in La Mesa Village! I love seeing the look on the faces of the regulars when they realize how wonderful it looks! I highly recommend checking it out! read more

Honestly would have rated higher if I was able to enter the establishment. Tried to go in during October fest for the first time today on 10/3/25 and the bouncer said my Florida ID is fake while using just a flashlight. Mind you I'm already over 21. It says "permanently closed." Not! It's open again as of about two weeks ago. Under new ownership. They have done a nice job of upgrading and improving the place. They're just tweaking it now, but it's already awesome. Great selection of cigars and great staff, very eager to please. (Not much of a drinker, so I can't really comment on their extensive beer and wine selection, although the couple of Red Trolley Ales I've had were very good.) They've even assured us that Saturday night music will be back in June, featuring blues, jazz, and reggae. They didn't mention pricing for music nights but it used to be a $10 cover which included your first drink. Keep in mind that for the time being, they are closed on Monday and Tuesday to continue the work, but I have a feeling that will be done soon. read more

I'm always looking for a good spot to enjoy some craft brews and I found one here at Hoffer's. I've passed by this place a ton of times but never really recognized it as a cigar bar. I've seen it a few times on Yelp and thought were is this place? So finally I decided to GPS this place and see what it's about. I've never been to a cigar bar so I didn't know what to expect but as I walk in the middle of two rooms full of cigars there is a small bar to your right. It's pretty dark inside which I like because low lights are relaxing to me. I don't smoke so I just came here for the craft beers but I may smoke a cigar to see what's up. There is a nice size beer menu with a lot from local brewery's. I came across two bar tenders and both were cool in their own way. They don't have any food or snacks but you can bring your own but I just grab something from the liquor store next door. There is a back patio where you can drink, eat and smoke. It's not a huge patio but it's not tiny either so don't come here with a group of ten. I like this little spot and can see myself here more often. read more

Hoffer's is super legit and one of the few popping places in La Mesa that serves craft beer. There was a time where they closed super early - like 9pm early - but the residents of the quiet neighborhood bordering downtown La Mesa seem to have permitted them to stay open later. No food, but they have a ton of menu's lying around for restaurants that will deliver to you. Swami's Cafe is right next door and is very prompt about delivering your dinner to you. I'm sure it didn't escape your notice, but Hoffer's is a cigar bar. They have cigars and smokes for sale and you can light them up in the outside area. The inside area is otherwise a no smoking zone. Despite this, it still smells pretty smokey inside and you're guaranteed to smell like an ash tray when you leave. So ladies, make sure you visit the night you need to wash your hair! read more

Phil was the best. I wanted to grab a last min present for my dad who is an avid cigar smoker! So I found this place on Yelp and again Yelp was right. There was a great selection and he was very knowledgeable about his product. He let me know there is no smoking in the bar and they have over 25 craft beers on tap. It looks like a very chill bar. The best part though by far was the customer service. I had my three year old minion with me and she was not allowed inside of course so Phil came outside to us. He brought out various selections for us to choose from and he rang me up without even having to go inside. Talk about service! He went above and beyond what had to be done and I was more than thankful for his help! read more

Another great little gem here in my current town of La Mesa. The bartenders stay alert, even on a busy Friday night. The place can get pretty packed but somehow not feel too congested. For a cigar bar, it doesn't really smell like it. The people's smoke on the back patio doesn't carry into the bar which is really nice. They also sell somewhat vintage cigar boxes and some of them are pretty clever. You can't go wrong if you start or end here. You know you'll get your beer quickly because of how attentive the staff is. You can also order from Swami's next door and they'll bring it over to you. I'd bookmarked this place ages ago after hearing a couple of guys talk about it at a Mexican restaurant (yes, that's sometimes how I get recommendations). They made it sound so interesting that I knew we'd have to go check it out. Two years later we finally did. It's small inside, but was very mellow on a Tuesday evening. Their tap selection was impressive and if either of us smoked cigars, we'd probably be all over their cigar selection. The place was clean and the service was friendly. And they were actually showing the soccer match on TV! Not many bars do that. My husband said that if we lived within walking distance of Hoffers he would be there every night. My wife and I have been here quite a few times to have a pint and smoke a cigar. This is my second favorite cigar bar in town, with Churchill's still taking the top for me. They have a impressive selection of cigars, and usually a good list of beers on tap. The interior seating area is a little dated and the outside area not much better, but they serve their purpose. Staff has usually been friendly and the place clean. No food options, but they are cool with bringing in your own or having some delivered. Came here for some after work happy hour shenanigans one afternoon. It's located in downtown La Mesa; parking is generally on the street (metered parking, free after 6 pm) so expect to be cruising around the block for a spot if you come at a busier time of day (or night). The bartender was super friendly. I started with the Pineapple Hefeweizen by Maui Brewing Co...I had to! The title alone was already captivating. Tasted like Hef with a bit of a pineapple aftertaste. Next we had the Speedway Stouts. Good, but pretty strong (12%). Definitely may not be a good idea if you are planning to get onto any kind of speedway yourself afterwards for that matter... We got a seat in the open air patio in the back (where you can smoke cigars) and was comfy until we had to move for a unforeseen reserved party. No matter - they offered us some free beers for giving up our seats. All in all, a really chill place, cool people and nice vibe. The best little hidden gem in downtown La Mesa. This area is really starting to make a name for itself. Do not let the 1950's style glass retail doors keep you out, push and go in. Hoffers has two good sized cigar rooms with MANY to select from and then a patio area to enjoy them in. There are many wines and unique beers to choose from to enjoy with your cigar. You can sit alone and enjoy your cigar as you take care of business on your computer or join in the never ending commaraderie that seems to be a natural element of any great cigar bar. If you do not enjoy cigars, do not let the name keep you out. There isn't any smoking indoors and its a very cozy room to enjoy a glass or two with a friend. Prices are reasonable too!! I am definitely a fan of this little place tucked in on the main street in La Mesa. I went here for my first time this weekend and was pleasantly surprise. It's a small cigar/beer bar where they have a variety of beer/wine/cigars to choose from (depending on your style) and if you don't know what you want, you can have a flight of something. They have a variety of local/craft beers on draft along with quite the selection of wines to choose from as well. Once you get past the bar, there is a little nook like patio in the back that is quaint and quiet to enjoy, and if you stick around until 730, live jazz plays on the patio to relax and enjoy your evening too. They are only open until 11pm, so if you want an easy, low key evening, this is the place. I found the staff to be knowledgeable and provide me with great recommendations depending on my flavor pallet and styles I liked. There is amply street parking available, but watch the meters if it's before 6pm. They do not have food at all, but any of the local places will deliver here if you wish to order a snack/meal from somewhere on La Mesa Blvd. I enjoyed a flight of beers here that I haven't had before and I would like to return sometime soon to experience more of what they have to offer. read more

I came here with my girlfriend to celebrate my birthday. The gentleman behind the bar ( I wish I could remember his name) was very friendly and offered up a tour of the place upon hearing it was our first time. He showed us the back, outdoor area and the two cigar humidors. I was happy to find not one, or two, but three of my favorite cigar brands (Rocky Patel is easy to find, but they have San Lotano and Kristoff as well!). Even though I would have preferred to smoke inside, I realize it isn't the 50s and the outdoor area was comfortable and filled with friendly patrons. This place was great! I took my brother-in-law here to start his bachelor party weekend. I called ahead and they were expecting us. It was pretty quiet in there when we arrived but it was perfect! plenty of room inside and outside, the bartender was awesome at recommending beers and cigars to try. Great beer bar in La Mesa. The vibe is great, and the staff is very attentive. It's pretty small and cozy, with only a few tables inside and some seats at the bar. They do have a nice outdoor patio as well. The beer and wine selection is awesome as well- especially for La Mesa. There aren't too many, if any, bars in the area that offer such a great variety of beers. I think the last time I went there, they had over 20+ beers on tap. I don't know much about cigars, only that I like them. So whenever I head to a cigar spot, I always bring my friend Casey with me. He picks em out, and I smoke em. Cute little place with 24 different taps of beers and a long list of wines. Its an Adorable place. They have a smoking patio for all you smokers, and of course since they sell a vasts selection of cigars you can choose from; being outside in the patio is a great treat. Yes they also have heat lamps, however they were working last night. Their beer selection is nice, they carry all kinds of stuff like stone, stella, racer 5, leffe, and more. i didnt ask what they had in bottle i was way overwhelmed the tap selection i couldnt decide, i went with a hefe. which one i dont remember. The first thing that came to mind when I walked in to Hoffers two weeks ago was: "Thank you baby Jesus, a bar in La Mesa that has REAL BEER!" And they have a damn fine selection at that. You can't go wrong with the three taps of Stone (ok so I'm a bit biased), but they also have Alesmith Speedway Stout (probably my all-time favorite stout), Leffe Brown, Delerium Tremens, Paulaner, and many more very tasty libations. I came here on a sleepy Sunday afternoon with the intention of having one beer and I ended up staying for about four hours chatting with the manager Mike, a German student with a heavy accent named Martin, a gem dealer/real estate mogul named Charlie, and a friendly local named Jeremy who had all the dirt on local bars. Nothing but good vibes here. The cigar selection is apparently out of this world, but I haven't indulged in it yet. I'm a beer drinker first and foremost, but I plan on buying a few choice cigars in the very near future. Let's face it. La Mesa is known for old people, not bars. This town goes to bed at 4pm just like your grandma, but Hoffers is a bright spot in the nearly non-existent La Mesa bar scene. Unlike most bars in the area, it doesn't reserve its taps exclusively for Anheiser Busch, and it doesn't attract the fizzy yellow beer drinking, wifebeater wearing East County bros with raised trucks and shit for brains. The only downside of Hoffers can be attributed to the puritanical laws of this sleepy retirement community--they can't serve any alcohol past 11pm. Come to think of it, that's probably better for all involved. I will be forced to stumble home and terrorize the retirees with my morally bereft lifestyle at a decent hour, and the retirees can sleep easy knowing that nobody is enjoying themselves past their bedtime.
