First time staying at Hofsas House. I will start off by saying that the staff were super kind. And the location is great and the hotel does have some charm. And while I understand that the walls are paper thin, the noise coming from your neighbors upstairs from just walking around (NOT stomping or intentionally being loud, just walking), is a deal breaker. Our upstairs neighbor was up at 3:30 am and our whole family was woken up by his/her walking around all morning. The second night was just as bad. I think ear plugs should absolutely be provided by the hotel, there's absolutely no insulation between floors, providing for a terrible night's sleep if someone is above you. I tried including two videos where the noise can be heard (the first at 11:30pm, the second at 3:30 am) but doesn't look like Yelp allows videos to be included. It would probably be best to charge at a better price point for this, it really can make or break your trip read more

Our stay at Hofsas House was awful. We came to Carmel for our honeymoon and had a great time in the city, but the hospitality at Hofsas House was just horrendous. The pool was dirty, the sauna was cold, the breakfast was a couple of cheap pastries with terrible coffee, etc etc. The beds are stiff and uncomfortable, there's no airflow to the room, there are no outlets to charge computer/ phone/ etc. Worst of all, we told them it was our honeymoon so they charged us 90$ and haphazardly sprinkled a few Hershey's kisses on the bed. 90$ for about 1$ of crappy chocolate. If you have a choice, stay away from Hofsas House. read more

Giving this place a 5 star rating, because I loved every bit of my stay with them. Wonderfully friendly and accommodating. Breakfast is orange juice, coffee/tea, pastries and fruit. Stayed there for an anniversary weekend. The room was large with a fireplace. The room did have an ocean view. The bed was comfy and the room clean. Love the half doors. The shower is really small but it does the job. the breakfast. Mostly pastries. Skip theirs and eat elsewhere. read more

We stayed June 13th &14th 2014. Lots of parking which is a great plus when staying in Carmel. Nice location to restaurants and shops. The hotel staff was friendly. Our room was nice , simple and clean. Had a small kitchenette and eating area. The bathroom was remodeled with heated tile floors. Two things we didn't like. First our room was at the end of the hallway so we could hear people at all hours walking and being loud. Also, the maids corridors is there so don't expect to take a nap or read a book during the day if you stay in that room.( I believe it was room 20) I know this hotel is dog friendly and as an animal lover I think that's great. But why you would put a dog on a 2nd floor? Not sure why the hotel thought that would be a good idea. We woke up Saturday morning at 6am to the sound of the dog or dogs above us walking back and forth, making all kinds of sounds. The walls and ceiling are very thin. We could hear everything that the people above us were doing. I know part of staying in a hotel is that it's not going to be perfect but I think some of this could have been avoided. The Hofsas House provided exactly the experience I was looking for in Carmel. The room was clean, cozy, and comfortable. The staff was attentive, friendly, and knowledgable. They made me feel completely at home and at ease. With the guidance of the staff, we were able to walk to some great restaurants and bars in town. In this morning, my boyfriend and I felt super hungry, so we jumped to the front desk at the breakfast time and grabbed 5 breads probably a bit more than people usually take. But the waitress just became rude and asked about how many people in our room with a super unpleasant tone. I feel we have to be white for her to serve us with respect. Quaint Hotel in Carmel, it's nice, but definitely on the older side as the carpets are matted down and the fixtures in the bathroom are difficult to use. I like that they have a pool to use, a definite plus in the hot weather! The breakfast was very basic and a little difficult to eat if you decide to eat in the lobby, because you will definitely sink into the couch, it's better to bring the food to your room or outside. I didn't mind staying on the top floor, but I could see this as a problem for older people, because there were a lot of stairs to drag a suitcase up. The staff was friendly, but the "view" of the ocean from the hotel is rather misleading if you are not familiar with streets in Carmel, because the hotel is far from the ocean, thus your view is from over the tops of eucalyptus trees. read more

This is a family owned hotel in business for 70 years. The staff is super friendly and helpful. We had a big room at the end in front. It was spacious with 2 beds + living room and dining area. The fireplace is a great bonus on a chilly night. I loved the FREE breakfast, great coffee,fruit and pastries. We live in San Juan Bautista and when my parents came to visit from LA, we decided to spend a bit more time in Carmel than just usual driving through... So booking Hofsas House was a great idea! We had two amazing rooms next to each other on the top floor [42 and 43] with fire place, full kitchenette, king beds and a balcony with the ocean view... We just parked our car in the hotel parking lot, dropped our things in the rooms, and went to have a great night on a town... In the morning we took the coffee and fresh pastries from the reception area up to the top floor and had a nice breakfast on the balcony with huge beautiful seagulls flying around and occasionally landing on the balcony railing... Very friendly staff, convenient location... Strongly recommend for a romantic gateway or family reunion... read more

I understand this is one of the last family owned hotels in Carmel and it shows! Carrie, the owner, was very friendly and helpful, as were all the staff. They have installed plugs in the parking area to plug in electric vehicles, there's lots of parking, a nice pool, continental breakfast in the morning, and the hotel is situated close to the centre of town. The ocean is fairly close by along a lovely walk, and they even suggested I leave my car at the hotel after I had checked out while I had lunch in town! read more

Nicest way to be in Carmel for NYE. Sweetest people. Great place. Now we called at the very last minute for a room on NYE. desk gal offered us "Donna's" room. Little room of the original owner Donna. For us, ur was PERFECT. Extremely clean. Double Dutch door so the sun came through before we left for dinner. Comfy bed. If you are fancy pants people you won't like this room. But if you want cozy, very clean, nice breakfast, big bath and a little adventure then stay with them. We loved it. And Carmel Roasting coffee in the room. Happy 2017. This place is the definition of rustic. I felt like I had walked into the 1960's when I entered my room. This hotel is definitely made for the 65+ crowd. The location was good, as it's within walking distance to the entire downtown Carmel area. Being dog friendly is also a big plus. The actual room was big and there was a full fireplace with plenty of logs to burn. 3 gripes are that #1 they messed up the reservation my made. Even though they upgraded us to a better room than what we paid for, we had specifically chosen this place because we wanted to be in a room detached from the actual hotel. #2, the doors did not lock very securely and the place just seemed old. #3 the complimentary breakfast was basically a bunch of Svenson's pastries and some fruit. Other than that the staff was friendly, the location great, and the overall experience was good. I would stay here again. read more

Another great stay at the Hofsas House. We have stayed here for several years and every year we love it more and more. The staff are wonderful and so is the owner Carrie and her family they are the best. My daughter and her husband came down for the weekend and stayed in a room with a beautiful balcony view of the ocean they loved it. Just got back from a lovely drive from San Diego to Carmel, and back down by the coast. Our first hotel of the trip was the Hofsas House. Honestly -- not impressed. A creepy painting of blond Bavarians on the driveway wall kind of set the stage. There were no bugs (that I know of) but it was musty, crowded, the beds were awfully soft, and for all that, I thought it was kind of expensive. Everyone's saying that with the economy in the tank everyone's more willing to negotiate prices, but we did NOT find that with hotels in Carmel nor in Santa Barbara. Yet when we arrived in Carmel we noticed that the place was DEAD -- nobody was wandering around, the bulk of the restaurants were empty. I think this hotel was probably 1/3 full. At any rate, I wouldn't stay here again and wouldn't recommend it, either. read more

This Hotel is absolutely my favorite hotel around!!! Every time I'm in Carmel I make it a point to stay here! Every room is different and it's like staying in a large Cottage with a Pool and Sauna! There is also a meeting room which is helpful for business trips, and they serve a nice continental breakfast with the best Coffee! I love that they are energy conscious and they have the most delightfully aromatic orange blossom bath gel. Walking distance to EVERYTHING!!! This hotel has been passed down for generations and the owners are lovely people. Definitely make your reservations here!!! read more

We can't say enough good things about the Hofsas House. We just returned from a great memorial Day weekend. It's a great value and perfect location with a friendly, helpful staff and comfortable beds - we have stayed here multiple times. It's great for our dogs and easy for my husband to get his scuba gear in and out. If you're looking for high end furnishings and granite countertops, this place is not for you. We had a very nice stay here. Keep in mind if you pick this place that it is old and doesn't have modern amenities, but it is quaint and cozy and the location is very good. The room decor was right from your grandma's house so be ready for wild wallpaper! The walls are thin and we heard lots of conversations that I thought would be a problem but by bedtime all was quiet. The view was nice although a very filtered ocean view. I just stayed in Hofsas House during my first visit to Carmel. The room was spacious enough, bathroom larger than expected, but the shower head was so low! Hard for my 6'3" bf. Yes the decor is a bit dated, but agree with the other reviewers that it adds to the appeal and personality of the town. The location and parking lot were nice. Convenient to main Ocean Ave shops and restaurants. A bit farther away from from the ocean, but having the ocean view from the fourth floor, where our room was located, was nice. The dutch doors are nice for the breeze. But because folks sleep with their windows open, any early morning noise from your neighbors is definitly heard, though. We didn't use the breakfast as we're aren't that into the pastry only breakfast. Had a great time and this hotel stay was a great beginning for a week-long vacation to California. The double queen room was very large. It could probably even fit another bed in the middle of the room. It also had three sinks so it was quite convenient. Our room (39) had a pink theme which was so cute and it was on the third floor so we had a nice view of the back. Breakfast of yogurt and pastries was very tasty and not too sweet, just the way we like it. It was a lovely experience and we'll be telling our friends all about it. read more

We enjoyed our stay at the Hofsas House!! The room fit with the quaint cottage feel of Carmel and had a private balcony with a view of the pool and the ocean. We enjoyed our dip in the pool, and the continental breakfast we could bring to our room on a tray every morning. Keep your eyes open for the ham and cheese croissants, my favorite of the daily pastries! The doors in this hotel were really neat. You could choose to open the whole door or just the top half, so you can enjoy the scenery. Our dog was welcomed and provided her own doggie blanket. We found the pricing at Hofsas House as reasonable as can be expected in Carmel and better than most. It's on a lovely quiet street and close to all the action of Ocean Ave. and the beach. Reasonably priced, but the room I stayed in was tiny, dark and a bit outdated. However, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was very clean and large. For the price I was happy with my accommodations, and I was happy to stay somewhere that my dog was welcome. The breakfast was fine and the staff very friendly. I was disappointed that my dog could not stay in the room by herself, but apparently that is true for all the hotels in Carmel (a police ordinance). I would stay here again. read more

There are many positive things about Hofsas House. It's very clean, the staff is extremely nice and accommodating, and it's a good location with plenty of parking. Free wi-fi and continental breakfast. However until it's renovated, the negative aspects will keep us away. Our bungalow was not at all cozy. It was very drafty (cold air blew in around the door and from the vent in bathroom), the furnishing were old and uncomfortable and arranged in an odd way. It would have been nice to snuggle in front of the fireplace but there was no place to sit. Hofsas House has great potential and would benefit from a professional overhaul. read more

Upon searching for a weekend get-away for my boyfriend and I, we came across the Hofsas House on Yelp and were intrigued just enough to give it a try. The under-stated entry way led to a friendly, cheerful and helpful concierge. After settling into our room, we stepped outside to enjoy the sunset with a bottle of champagne on our private balcony. That's right, I said PRIVATE! With ocean views and peaceful nature sounds, we were both able to unwind and soak in the moment. The only down sides thus far are that he walls are THIN (as in hear-your-neighbor's-conversation thin), and the furniture is definitely dated. But these are both things that were noted on Yelp previously, so I can't act surprised. All in all, my boyfriend and I were able to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a mere 2 hour drive and a $125 room. We're happy with the Hofsas and you should be too!! read more

I just came back from one night at Hofsas House with my sister and a friend. We picked it because we each have dogs. The rooms are in dire need of upgrading. Uncomfortable queen beds, outdated dressers, which no one uses anymore, old small TV's on the dressers, very basic bathroom with small, basic shower that barely trickles water, small sink and counter. The lobby is very small, so we took our breakfast pastries and coffee back to our rooms. No other choice. There are only 36 parking places off street, and 38 rooms. Even though there were vacancies, there was no parking at all when we came back from dinner. I parked illegally close to our room. This is a very busy season, so the prices were higher than usual, but even with AARP discounts, it was very poor quality for the price. There are many, many dog friendly places in Carmel with many more amenities, bigger rooms that are updated with microwaves, little fridges, etc. This is a very basic motel. The manager did recommend a wonderful restaurant for us and made reservations too. Other than that, I unfortunately can't really recommend anything about Hofsas House. read more

They upgraded our room for us, and were extremely accomodating the whole weekend. - The pastries and coffee in the mornings were extremely delicious and ample. - While we did not take our dog, it's dog friendly. - I also particularly enjoyed the heated pool. - Location is perfect for a weekend of walking and relaxing in Carmel. When we visit Carmel we love the quaint shops and the simple approach to small city living. Our stay at the Hofsas House fit the theme. Not a grand hotel, but a quaint family owned hotel that is a throwback into time. Like so many small non-corporate spots, the Hofsas House provides a comfortable night's sleep in a perfectly quite and well place hotel. Our room overlooked the Pacific Ocean and the pool. We spent every bit of 5 minutes walking to the drive (Ocean). This space is a great way to help a family owned business succeed, while getting to see all of Carmel by foot. Parking is abundant and the amenities are just right. When in the Monterey/Carmel area, I would easily recommend the Hofsas House for you lodging needs. read more

My husband and I just arrived home from staying at Hofsas House for the fourth time. We go to Carmel several times a year but started to stay here because of our sheltie, Lucy. She loves it here. We all do. We always get a very clean comfortable room. The staff are wonderful and friendly. No it isn't the Ritz. You won't get that anywhere in Carmel. We have stayed in several inns in Carmel. We always get a comfortable bed. Why people complain about furniture decor surprises me. If it functions it's fine with us. Besides you're out exploring Carmel, etc. The Inn is a little noisy (which is why it isn't 5 stars) but has always quieted down by 9 p.m. Actually if parents wouldn't let their kids run and scream up and down the walkway it wouldn't be as bad. And I do love kids. We definitely will stay here again and again. The location can't be beat. Our fav. restaurant, The Village Corner, is down the street who let Lucy eat with us. The beach isn't too far. So relax and enjoy your stay. read more
