I booked a room at Hofsas House on Expedia for $95 (+ a $25 pet fee). My boyfriend, my dog, and I stayed here on New Year's Eve. We were pleased to find ample parking behind the hotel upon arrival. The room was small but adequate, perhaps a bit musty though. There was a small outdoor pool that is heated to 80 degrees. It's very close to the shops and restaurants of downtown Carmel as well as the very dog-friendly Carmel Beach. My dog was welcome at Hofsas, but like I mentioned there was a $25 pet fee and a big list of rules (no pets on the beds or in the lobby while food is being served, must not be left alone in the room, yada yada). Yeah, you try to tell my dog he can't sleep on the bed. ;) We were provided with a dog blanket. The hotel also offered a listing of local pet sitters had we needed to leave my dog and explore/shop/etc. Luckily, Carmel itself is very dog-friendly and our dog would have been able to eat with us at a number of places in town. I enjoyed the free breakfast -- the lobby even provides trays that you can use to carry food back to your room. They had some orange juice and very yummy pastries. Overall not a bad stay, but I plan to explore other pet-friendly hotels next time I stay in Carmel. read more

It was ok. Needs updating for sure, but do understand the age of the place. Breakfast orange juice had black speckle floating in it. About to grab one but more than one had that so decided to get coffee. Furniture missing handles. Dirty sinks with mold. Showers small and shower head unable to turn to the left so your standing against one side of the wall trying to take a shower. Sink needs cleaning. Heated floors in the bathroom nice touch. Bathroom has no vent and Coffee maker and water cups in the bathroom ??? Coffee maker had dirty speckles in water dispenser. Free Parking first come first serve otherwise you'll need to look for one along the streets. Office/lobby...smelled bad with smoking after one worker lady walked in from outdoors. Breakfast is danishes and muffins fruit. No savory option. it was free so that's nice. Lobby can't accommodate more than 4 people sitting so you'd have to go back to ur room to eat your Pastry and drink your coffee. The walls are thin. Hear people yelling at each other. Other staying up later and talking. Floors screacky. Sauna not coed. We ended up not going. I didn't want to be alone in a sauna when I can with my husband here for Anniversary. read more

My family and I stayed here while vacationing in Carmel. Our room was very spacious with a King and twin bed, a kitchenette, a breakfast table, an adequate sized bathroom and a walk in closet. We also had a large patio with a table and chairs that provided a sea view. The furnishings were homey and comfortable and the bathroom was recently updated with tasteful fixtures. Wifi was provided by the hotel. The best part of Hofsas House in my opinion is the location. It is within easy walking distance to shops and dining but just off the main thoroughfare so nights are pleasant and quiet. We had no need to contact the office other than checking in and checking out but they were very pleasant. The "things to do" binder in the room was a bit outdated. The kitchen had an apartment sized refrigerator, a full size stove/oven, a microwave, coffee maker, cutlery, plates, glasses, pots, pans, cups, etc. I was pleasantly surprised. On a side note, the closest market is about a mile or so away, in a mainly residential area and a bit pricey. If you plan on bringing any groceries (we needed milk for our baby) you may want to pick it up on your way in. read more

This hotel is extremely mediocre. I stayed here with my mother and our yorkie for 2 nights and probably wouldn't again. Then again, if you enjoy quaint and wallpapered, you'll love this place. I didn't particularly enjoy the shower. Water immediately puddled at my feet and I had to stand in it for the duration of my shower- unenjoyable and unsanitary. I noticed dust in several places, and a fair amount at that. The window coverings are not black out, and are rather sketchy. Bed was springy and pillows underwhelming. Waiting for internet to load was like watching paint dry. Not conveniently placed, however everything in Carmel is close, so this was no biggie. However, I did enjoy that it was dog friendly, and the price. read more

This is the second hotel that I've stayed in while staying in Carmel. The biggest draw was that I got to bring my dog with me. Pet-friendly hotels are a must. My dog was given a blanket/mat to sleep on too, which was nice. Even though my dog was a little "barky," there were no problems/complaints. Remember, dogs are not allowed unattended in the rooms. Our room had a nice bathroom and even had a small kitchen area stocked with utensils, plates, bowls, etc. There was a stove, place to sit, everything. There's also a nice meet and greet in the evenings with wine, drinks, and light refreshments. The owners are very nice and friendly. Hofsas house is also close to all the downtown and beach areas. I think any of these reviews written before 2010 should be ignored. The delightful, charming and cozy Hofsas House was the BEST for a recent girlfriend getaway. Quiet rooms. Fireplaces. Ocean views. Kitchenettes. Value priced. Dog friendly (we didn't bring one, but know that matters). Just paces from the awesome shopping, incredible dining and a few blocks from the glorious beach. The wine + cheese package added the chance for the three of us to sit on our patio and watch the sun set while we relaxed before dinner. The continental breakfast was ample, as well. Innkeeper, Carrie, is third generation and a very savvy host. Give it a try. (PS -- it is NOT the "Ritz, but then again, Carmel by the Sea is not Beverly Hills. This entire community is unique, upscale but well-worn-in, so arrive with a sense of adventure.) read more

I disagree with the previous reviewer - I stayed here in the summer of 2011 for one night on the way from SF to Carmel and paid extra for an upper floor room with a "view of the ocean". Granted, I had done research and read on Tripadvisor that a partial view was the best I could expect but given the prices of Carmel, I thought I would try and see what the fuss was about the ocean view here. I ended up getting no view of the sea at all, just lots of the tops of trees sticking up into the horizon. The reality is that the trees have grown taller so maybe in the eatly 2000s, there was a good view of the ocean. But the trees grow taller, and the building doesn't, so eventually they obstruct the ocean view! I did have a room with a fireplace, which was nice to use since it was still early in the summer and it got chilly at night. But for the price I paid for that ocean view, I think I got quite ripped off. I guess if I had just paid for a standard room and managed my expectations, I would have given three or four stars, since the hotel was well located, near many restaurants, clean and pretty decent. Or I might have been better off just going into one of the regular motels in the area. In this case, I felt like I got the worse of both worlds, having paid more and only to get less. Exquisite for the price. A room with a gorgeous view off the patio (get a room on the top, street, level - below that the sea will be screened with pines), dog-friendly, HUGE bathroom, fridge/coffeemaker/iron/hairdryer/microwave/king bed can be had for well under two hundred dollars a night. Other places require at least 4 or five nights, at 250 - 300/ a night, whooh! Plusses: excellent, friendly service. One of the staff brought us her can opener from her own home when we forgot ours (!!!). Great dogsitters available, half-doors let heavenly breezes sweep through, on the edge of all the town action, really great cable, in-room massage services available. Minuses: excessive exterior pink, lower rooms not as perfect, kind of hard to find (although that could also be considered a plus). We liked making up a tray in the morning from the lobby of ham and cheese croissants and bearclaws and a carafe of coffee, and then drinking it in front of the huge window or on the patio. Gorgeous. 6/4 UPDATE: Get a room with a private patio. There is nothing like smoking a good bowl of sweet tobacco/getting lightly zonked on a good beer/chillin to the view of the Pacific. We tried the "Better" and "Best" rooms and, really? Really the best have a patio. Just don't get mine, OK? read more

This hotel is great! If you're looking to stay in Carmel, definitely check this place out. Walking distance to all the restaurants and shops, we stayed in a two bedroom, two bath family suite, for $235 with taxes. You can't beat that! Noting Christine M's review, yes, all the hotels here are kinda dated. But it's all a part of the Carmel charm. Hofasas house is reminiscent of a Swedish or otherwise old European place, with a mural of some danish looking kids out front. It's very cool, a deal, and centrally located (and free parking.) Continental break fats included too, but we're heading to get some local breakfast in town. I will totally be coming back! Stayed at Hofsas House Sunday night in a 3rd floor room. This is a family, woman-run business that's been welcoming guests for decades. It's painted a light pink with Bavarian touches, and each room is the individually decorated. My room had a charming conversation couch and a cast-iron stove. Visitors are welcomed with a bottle of wine, water crackers, and a selection of cheeses. There is free wifi. The room was so comfortable and quiet that My normal travel insomnia disappeared and I slept a restful 9 hours!! read more

The family reserved two connecting rooms for a weekend escape not too long ago. We were able to check in a little early, and found out that we could have arrived even earlier if we wanted to. I would definitely call ahead to see if your room is ready if you prefer to check in early. The parking lot is a bit tricky to maneuver around. You enter through the front down a very steep ramp and you have to weave around the buildings to get to a favorable spot near your room. This particular weekend it was raining so it was nice to find out there are covered spots. However, you will get wet having to lug your belongings up and down the stairs. Be careful not to slip! The rooms were indeed clean. I loved all the pink decor but I'm a fan of the color. It may be too girly for some. The beds were a little uncomfortable but the pillows made it easier to sleep. We brought our furbaby along with us and another family member brought theirs, too. They had a blanket only in one of the two rooms for them to use. The hotel will let you leave your furbaby in a crate if you decide to leave your room, and will get a number to call you if they get too loud while you're away. There are instructions/directions on where you are allowed to let your pet relieve him/herself. Once you're outside, it's quite difficult to know where you're actually allowed to let them go potty. Since it was a rainy weekend, your spots were limited if you didn't want to track mud into the rooms. The hotel was just okay. It was a hassle to have to walk around the entire premises to get onto the sidewalk from our room. I don't think I would have minded as much if it had not been raining. I would probably check out another hotel before coming back to this one if we had another stay in Carmel with our pup. read more

Omg these reviews are a joke. The receptionist was rude and this was a sold out Veterans Day. No a.c and at 11 when Monterey restaurants close my husband asked for a pillow and we were told it's an emergency line and to not bother them. Wow ! Way to treat evacuees. A nicer tone would be appreciated and a cleaner room. We had other people's hair tangled in our towels and no complementary waters or anything else. read more

Ok starting by saying the man at the front right when we checked in was so rude he was in his 40s or 50s, we booked a ocean view with king bed and he tryed to tell me we had a queen bed with now ocean view after trying to tell him that I know what I booked on booking.com he made me sound like a lier then he searched deeper and said "oh yeah your right I found it" before that he said " u should know u booked the room" in a very sarcastic tone! When we got to the room it was very hot and smaller then we thought. It was so noisy too u could hear the other people talking right next to us the whole time. The next day my husband when down to get us the conventional breakfast and when we starting eating the pastries they tasted old and like mush and so did the muffins. We couldn't even finish them. The same night I thought i felt something biting me in the bed so I got out my flash light from my phone and we saw little dead bugs in the sheets I was so grossed out. The location of this hotel is suberb, walking distance to the shops & restaurants and only about 8-10 blocks from Carmel Beach. Price is reasonable for the area, and the family suite we stayed in was large (2 rooms, 2 bathrooms, etc). Place was old & the staff was friendly. However, its very noisy. All thru the night I heard people, babies crying, doors slamming, plumbing noises, and footsteps on the creaky wooden floors. Plus the fact that dogs (and fleas) could've been in your room the night before is worrysome. So you need to balance the cost & convenience with lack of sleep, etc. read more

I stayed here over the weekend in room #2 (for my very first visit to Carmel!) What a great place! The room was adorable, there's a nice swimming pool, and it's dog friendly. The bed was nice and firm... very comfortable. The bathroom was a great size, which also included a little coffee station. I checked in and once in the room there was an overwhelming smell (strong detergent). I am very sensitive to all scent and get headaches. So you can image that my stay was extremely painful as I started to feel sick. We had to leave the window and door open and it was a very cold day. The walls are very thin as you can hear people walking at all hours. Someone slammed the door and the whole building shook. Parking sucks. I will not return. read more

This is a quaint, if not somewhat dated, place to stay. They had super reasonable rates for a last minute trip we took during 4th of July week. The rooms were spacious, but certainly not the Ritz...they let us bring all 3 of our dogs (at $20/dog) and didn't tell us there were "rules" :) We left them for about 2 hours while we went to breakfast, and they barked at the maids. The receptionist went on to ask if we were checking out...that we were NOT to leave the dogs alone, and they barked. Jeez...soooooory. haha Oh well. It was nice for a last minute trip, but we probably wouldn't stay there again. Also, NO elevators, so sucks if you have a stroller or wheelchair. Don't use third party booking to earn more money when you don't consider it a priority in running your business. We really enjoyed our stay at Hofsas. This was the first time we took our dogs with us on vacation. We have a fairly large black lab, which most places won't allow because of size, but there were no issues with Hofsas. They even upgraded our room with a balcony without us asking! I really love that the granddaughter of the lady who originally founded Hofsas worked there. She gave us a great history of the hotel. They offer a complementary breakfast of danish with coffee and OJ. It's pink.. which is awesome. It's at the end of the street, which was great for us! It allowed us to walk everywhere and explore the town. The bed was very comfortable! We would definitely stay here again! read more

Nice & Clean! We really enjoyed our stay at Hofsas House. We came with our kids on a family weekend trip. When we arrived, we were greeted by friendly staff and felt very welcome. We had two rooms - one king with fireplace and next door 2 queens for the kids. We loved the dutch doors which opened at the top allowing us to enjoy the wonderful breeze and the gorgeous view of the sea and the sunset over the treetops. There are several rooms which are HUGE with two rooms and two bathrooms which will accommodate a family in one room with lots of space, as well as family cottages. Most of the rooms have a kitchenette with sink, fridge, coffee-maker. The beds and bed linens are very nice. The walls are a bit thin but noise wasn't a problem during our stay. We were worried more about our kids being noisy than anything else. Even though it was cool out, the kids enjoyed the heated pool, and especially, the dry sauna after their dip. The kids also enjoyed the light breakfast - yogurt, fruit, pastries, coffee and tea- served in the office every morning. We took our tray up to the terrace to enjoy breakfast with an ocean view. The property is very European and all of the rooms are uniquely decorated. It's a lot like visiting your grandma...you feel very cozy and at home here; there are brass headboards, flowery bedspreads, antiques, white window shutters. There are modern amenities, too, such as flat screen TV, hair dryers, coffee maker and mini-fridge in the kitchenette. A big plus: the rooms and the property are spotless and the cleaning staff work hard to keep it that way. The property is not new--it's been around for 60 years, but it is well kept and very clean. I am VERY picky about cleanliness and I was very happy with how spotless the rooms, bathrooms and grounds were. Carrie, the owner, works on-site and oversees everything. She is so hospitable and welcoming and gave us lots of information on where to eat, what to see and do. Knowing that we were traveling with our kids, she left us a bundle of wood and a s'mores making kit in our room along with beach blankets so we could build a fire at the beach. The location can't be beat. It's on a quiet back street within walking distance to everything. The hotel is a nice alternative to chain hotels where you might not get the same welcoming feeling. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend Hofsas House to anyone traveling to Carmel! read more

I would totally stay here again. Totally weird, freaky Bavarian vibe (which I dig!), but the location is great, staff are very helpful, the rooms are clean and the price is reasonable for Carmel --Bedding was clean and comfortable (although bed was a little soft for me) --Decor was in good condition and clean, although surely dated --We paid for one of the larger rooms which happen to be on the higher floors. I'd do that again. I don't know, but suspect lower floor rooms could be susceptible to being musty. Ours was not, plus we had a private balcony. Not luxurious, but still a nice place to sit and drink a glass of wine. We could even see the ocean --Bathroom was clean and not cramped. --Their continental breakfast was quite nice--pastries were fabulous (must have been from one of the numerous local bakeries). The coffee was ok (in room coffee was un-drinkable) --Staff was super friendly and helpful. --Walls are a bit thin. We took a nap and could hear a neighbor somewhere snoring. We were more amused than bothered, but if you're noise sensitive, might be an issue. read more

On both trips to Carmel, my boyfriend and I stayed at Hofsas House. Cons: You can hear everything. As I mentioned, there isn't much foot traffic, but there is traffic outside with cars driving by every few minutes or so. For some reason, the cars sound really loud. I guess the walls are a little thin because you can hear people walking up the stairs and on the deck outside the room. I'm a light sleeper and my mid-day nap was interrupted by a couple playing with their dog right outside my room. They were throwing a toy and I could hear the dog's nails tapping on the floor as it ran after it. Kind of annoying, but I got over it. Temperature control in the room is a little iffy. You have to set the thermostat all the way to 90 for it to feel warm in the room. But the fireplace comes in handy, so it's fine. Pros: I love the location - it's really close to shops, so we could park the car and walk everywhere - but it's far enough at the back of town where you don't have to worry about too much foot traffic outside your window. The price is pretty nice for the size of the room. We stayed in room 43, which is very large and includes a fireplace and a kitchenette and seating area. The bathroom is pretty spacious, but the shower stall is pretty small. The bed is big and comfy with lots of covers to bundle up in. The staff is super friendly and will take the time to give you recommendations for places to visit in town. Overall, I'm a fan of Hofsas House! read more

I recently stayed at this hotel and we had a great experience. Good location, DOG FRIENDLY!!, nice size room, good service. We overall enjoyed our stay....Little outdated but I kinda liked that! Our room was a king with a balcony, we were dissapointed it didnt have a fireplace but we did love the balcony! The only downside....My boyfriend was being nice and suprised me with flower petals on the bed and candles ect. He called the hotel to order this package and for $75 he assumed there would be a lot more to it!! He seriously could have bought the decorations for $5 and done it himself. It was a nice thought and nice that the hotel offers that...but still $75 was way too much for only having one ballon, fake candles, chocolate kisses, and fake flower petals. :/ But we would probably stay again someday :) read more

I recently stayed at Hofsas House in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and it was amazing! I received a friendly welcome from Carrie and Doris (who are both very sweet) upon arrival, and check in was smooth and quick. There is plenty of parking in the lot and on the street, and the location is within walking distance to pubs, restaurants, art galleries, shopping and of course, the beach! The upper level rooms have a nice view of the ocean, so that was a pleasant surprise as well. I enjoyed their wine and cheese package en suite, which came with crackers and two cheeses! I was in heaven! The Bavarian charm, soft pink dutch doors, artistic flair and old world charm if this place will have me coming back more when I'm in the area...and of course, recommending it to friends, family and clients in the future. Pros: price, location, pool and sauna, real pastries for breakfast Cons: none! I recently stayed at Hofsas House with my wife and a couple of our friends. We shared a 2 bedroom suite, which was opposite a balcony overlooking the pool with a glimpse of the ocean. The night we stayed was mid-week and we saw no other guests while we were there, although the number of rooms (maybe 40?) gave me the impression it might be much busier on weekends and holidays. For the price, the location of this hotel is excellent - 5 minutes walk through Carmel-By-The-Sea to the fantastic beach. We really enjoyed the deck looking down the hill for viewing of sunset over the beach. The suite was enormous, with two large bedrooms, each with full bathrooms. One bedroom had a fireplace and a kitchenette with fridge and microwave. In addition to the fireplace, ducted heating kept the rooms warm and comfortable. The furniture and decor was comfortable and mostly older, solid timber items keeping with the European style of the place. Breakfast was self-serve in the lobby (with a tray provided so we ate at our room) and consisted of fresh fruit and orange juice, fresh pastries and good coffee. Stayed at the Hofsas House for a night this past weekend, and absolutely loved the place. Great little place a block from the sea, and a charming place to stay at. Maria and Donna at the front desk were just charmingly nice, and made us feel very welcome. Patiently, they told us all the places we could go to for drinks or dinner, and had many suggestions. The hotel itself is a nice little spot, albeit overpriced for the amenities. The guest services were great but the breakfast didn't include a whole lot. I thought certain features of the hotel were really cool and unique, like the heated bathroom floors with personal controls (I've never seen this before anywhere, even at 5 star hotels). Some of the downsides though: the rooms didn't do a good job of keeping outside noise actually out, the beds are extremely uncomfortable and you can feel the springs (I had my worst nights of sleep in years on these beds) and the TVs are clearly not up to the newest resolution quality. That said, our room had a kitchenette in it and a nice, spacious dresser, which you wouldn't find at a lot of places in the star range. Also they have a pool that is open year round and the location is great. All in all, this is one of many similar Carmel hotels that cater to tourists looking for the quaint town's incomparable experience. There is a lot they could do to make the rooms better, but I think it's a strong candidate for your stay if you can get a room at the right price. I wouldn't overpay to stay here. read more

Stayed in room 33 during our wedding weekend. The room is beautiful and spacious and the view is incredible. The staff is kind and helpful. The kitchen is separate from the bedroom and has a small fridge (not mini fridge but a small fridge). The balcony is great to lounge, read, eat, stretch, whatever. The king bed is a bit soft but I prefer very firm beds. Overall, this place had the best value for the money anywhere in Carmel. Will absolutely stay here again and again. read more

We stayed in room 37. It was very comfortable with a spacious accessible bathroom. The hotel is close to downtown, has reasonable rates, and a friendly staff. The ocean views are lovely. We'll be staying here again. One thing to note is that the room is probably far from the hotel boiler, so be prepared to wait a while for hot water once you turn on the tap. read more

I recently stayed overnight and had a great experience. My room was perfectly clean and cozy with a nice modern bathroom/shower/tub. It was really stormy and the lady at the front desk helped me order food to be delivered and I ended up with some of the best pizza I've ever had! I highly recommend this place. the hospitality and the beds and rooms were great. We were there with a function WTCares and enjoyed the dog friendly atmosphere. Only downside was the Internet. We could get connected in our room, but it was so slow email not FB worked so pretty useless. All in all a good stay. read more
