I found out that woodsball isn't really my thing, but I can still review the place, right? I set up a private group here last week. The whole process was super easy. I was sent an email confirmation request the day before which I replied to and boom. Game on. Oh yeah there was a security deposit too- $10 a player or something? Check out the site (hogback.net) to see. The place is huge. It has a lot of fields too mainly catering to woodsball, but the fields come in all sizes. There's some which I feel is fit for 2v2 and there are some fields that can cater 20+ v 20+. The staff are a bunch of nice guys and they're about as on point as you can get w/ a paintball ref. You learn to accept that the refs don't always see everything, but they do try to catch the people who are out and that's what counts. If you've never been here before, just know that you're supposed to go into some private farm. It's going to feel like you're trespassing on private property and the one lane road is going to make you feel uneasy when you see incoming vehicles, but hey, it's a good place to play. You see a lot of kids here, but truth be told, I don't know if I like kids playing. For the most part, they're like.... inadequate meatshields. read more

Fantastic place for first-timers to get their shot at glory, aka play paintball for the first time, while also being great for more experienced players. My friends and I set up a private half-day morning session via phone on a Friday and they scheduled us without any wrinkles for the following morning. The vast majority of us had never played paintball before or had very limited experience, so we had no idea to expect. Hogback Mountain is (duh) an expansive mountainous plot that has multiple maps and combat areas that play off the natural terrain and also some artificially made barriers. Examples would be the Jungle which is a twisted expanse of woods that can entangle you if you're not careful to mini-bunkers which is a map with several mini bunkers made of wood piles. There are also some more intense artificially made maps such as Castle which are much more high-paced and intense, and they are the more popular maps. Our experience at Hogback as a predominately newbie group was fantastic and we'll definitely be returning. They were very accommodating to all us new folks and explained everything very well, especially the safety instructions. All the equipment did not seem old or decrepit and for the most part operated without trouble (I think we only had two instances of jamming between all eleven of us). All of the service was great, and we played a LOT of games before our four hours were up. All of the games were so much fun! Special shout-out to our dope ref, Jovan (sorry for the spelling), who let us carry out weird one-on-one deathmatch between me and my girlfriend where we finally settled our beef. Hogback Montain Paintball is complete trash. I went for "walk on play" on a Saturday and was very disappointed. The refs are useless and don't ever know what is going on. They don't know how to count to split the teams and most of them look like they are 13 years old. Refs that day were more worried about eating pizza and riding the 4 wheeler around. After every round we sat for 30 minutes. Everything was just super unorganized and made the day terrible. read more

This place is awesome! They have a challenging terrain and a variety of field types. Woodball players will enjoy the deep woods and there are plenty of bunkers, natural and manmade, to satisfy both speedball and rental players. The refs are fair and quick, the staff is friendly and efficient and paint prices are on par with surrounding fields. Big games are fantastic as this is when they bring out props such as shields and allows use of First Strike Rounds(FSR). FSR adds a new dimension to paintball and Hogback is the only field I know of in Northern Virginia that allows them. I'll definitely be back here. read more

My friends and I have been going to Hogback annually for eight years, as a private group. Its something everyone looks forward to. Generally speaking, its been a great time each year. The courses are awesome and the refs are pretty flexible with custom rules. But two things have been getting progressively worse year after year: the equipment and the refs. The markers themselves look like World War II relics. They are chipped, dented, and worn out Tippmann's. The hoppers are loose, the markers jam more frequently and I'm fairly certain I can throw paper airplanes with more accuracy than these markers fire paintballs. It really detracts from the experience. The refs (in particular, the one's we've had the past two years) have some of the worst attitudes I've ever seen. I realize they have to deal with arrogant, adolescent, snot-nosed kids sometimes, but they seem to indiscriminately treat people with disdain. The impression my group got from our ref is that we were a huge inconvenience to him, like he was doing us a favor by being there. He mumbled, had no energy, was sarcastic and curt with rules enforcement and had the personality of a gravedigger. My group is dropping over $1,000 a year at this place. Maybe that's peanuts to them. Maybe they don't care. But unless the equipment gets replaced and the refs improve their interaction with the groups, we'll be looking elsewhere for our annual trip. read more

Celebrated a teen's birthday recently at Hogback. We were all really impressed and happy with Hogback. The staff were all very nice, helpful and attentive. Also, staff was very attentive to safety, making sure everyone wore masks, and followed safety rules. One person in our party used GPS for directions to Hogback and ended up in a residential area and Mr. Hogback's home (owner)!! This is no fault of Hogback, just a tip. So just make sure the destination has paintball in the title of location. Have fun! read more

This place sucks. The refs/staff steal your CO2 canister. So you had a long day of playing paintball and you're out of CO2. You can either refill it, or you can ask the Hogback staff to rent a new canister, and he holds on to yours. If you opt for the latter, do BEWARE, if you have a brand new and shiny canister Hogback staff will steal it. So come time to return your personal canister they will give you a beaten up one. So, they're stupid. You raise this to the owner and he replies what difference does it make??? A canister is a canister. But that same damn logical should apply to you as well right Hogback owner; so why steal your customer's new canister? They do this isn't ad of buying new ones as replacements. They get your new ones for free! Stop lying you owner you! read more

I give this place three stars. I'd have given it four stars (I find it difficult to give five stars for anything less than superior experiences), but the staff needs a little work. My team normally plays here for our home practice field. Unfortunately, we are now considering other locations. The field itself is fine, and for big-game scenarios I will likely have my team show up and play. Some of the referees are jackasses. I don't really know any other word for it. I feel that the staff has largely gone down in quality over the years. Two of my teammates were accused of shooting non-field-paint. After this happened, the refs did their job and checked them out - fine, I understand that and I respect that. However, once my teammates had been cleared by the senior ref on duty, other refs began spot-checking my two guys periodically, to the point where it started seriously taking away from our game. Again - it's fine that my guys got checked in the first place, that shows that the staff cares. But once they've been cleared, that should be the end of it especially since my team consists of reputable honest players. To continuously make checks and threaten my players with ejection just pisses me the f* off. read more

I took my son here 20 Nov, 2016 for an afternoon of paintball. We didn't have a reservation, but they had no problem accepting us as walk-ons and integrating us with an existing group. We saw an even mix of first-timers, kid-birthday-partiers and experienced pros while there. There are other paintball fields closer to us, but Hogback appears to offer more playtime and more maps/fields for less money than other places. When I arrived the employee who rung me up noticed I was military and offered me a discount, even though I didn't ask for it. Greatly appreciated! REALLY impressed with their commitment to safety. Even though the play fields are part of the natural landscape, all areas are netted. There are separate, netted safe zones where players retreat to after each match. All employees are constantly watching to ensure barrel covers are on when they're supposed to be, and every time some kid had an accidental trigger pull inside a safe zone (evidenced by the sound of the marker going off,) all of the employees yell (as if part of a Pavlovian response) "FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER, PLEASE!" We played multiple games, and there were always two guides/observers on every field, on either side, refereeing and ensuring "dead" players are escorted out safely. One criticism: Our particular guide was a bit obnoxious about calling out barrel violators. While all employees yell loudly at safety violators to get their attention, most do so in a firm, yet courteous manner ... Our guy appeared to be on a power trip, not only yelling loudly at violators, but RUNNING up on them as if he was about to assault them. Instead of yelling to get their attention, his yelling came across as abusive and excessively unnecessary, particularly because I noticed other employees (like Lauren) were able to yell and get players' attention while still coming across as being helpful. (For the record, I was NOT a safety violator.) The equipment we received was definitely worn out. They worked, but I suspect if you're REALLY into paintball, you won't like the rental equipment here. For a dad just wanting to play with his son, they worked fine. I saw a couple of people ask for replacement markers, and the staff was quick in giving them a replacement (with no pushback) so players could get back in the game. They also serve lunch there (2 hot dogs, chips and soda for $7.) While the meal was meager, I like the fact they're not trying to run a full-up snack bar, instead focusing their employees' efforts on the paintball business at hand. (Some paintball places offer a full snack bar with pizza, ice cream, wings, etc. But the end result is that customers end up being served crappy food prepared by people who run paintball fields ... Think about it.) This place helps keep your stomach from rumbling, but doesn't lose focus on why you're there. Overall, we had a great time, and our guide made sure we played multiple areas with relatively little downtime. Minus one star for the overly-aggressive safety observer and the worn-out equipment, but we'll definitely be returning! read more

I had never done paintball before and this was my first experience. My friends and I were going to go for about 2 hours and ended up staying till it closed. We had a great time and the staff were very helpful. They put us with other beginners as the people who come a lot have these guns shooting an unbelievable amount of paint per second making it hard to move. We had a blast with the newbies like us and I would definitely go again. They were organized and kept the games moving. We got short breaks between games and then right back on the field. read more

He even went above and beyond and took photos of us which he sent to us afterwards. Lots of great games and courses and they're great at customizing it to the size of our group and our desires. Fields are fun and diverse, the staff and referees run a smooth operation and it's an all around good time, especially for private groups. Prices are also pretty reasonable (free air refills, $5 lunch, rental includes 500 paintballs). However, the quality of their paintballs are terrible and their guns are pretty old. I can't even count how many misfires I had, which causes the paintballs to explode in your barrel and ruins any chance at a clean straight shot. I will definitely go back, but they really need to purchase some higher quality paintballs and could use some new guns. read more

Great place to go paintball and have section events. Great for Marines as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has never played paintball before. There is a large hill to climb up to get to the paintball arena but it is well worth it. Also the road from the main road to the paintball range is very long and narrow. Coming from a mom who pays but doesn't play, Hogback is worth it. Nearly two years ago my son had his 11th birthday party there, it was a private group of a bunch of boys who had never played before. The staff was very accommodating and helpful, the boys talked about the good time that they had for months. Since then we have been there a number of times for both big events and walk on play, other players have been helpful and courteous and the staff continues to be accommodating. read more

I have gone here about eight times in the last few months. The refs are fantastic. The are very good about following safety rules. The rental equipment is decent. Very typical of most places. I wish they had more of a selection or upgrades on what can be rented. I would suggest to anyone who is going to play more than once to go out and buy a thermal mask to bring. The groups on weekends are very large and they split up the beginner and advanced groups very well. The fields are pretty good too. All woods ball with only one speedball field. It is on a mountain...its a great workout. I would recommend every who wants to try paintball to come here first. read more

The courses themselves were fun for my friends and I but unfortunately the rental equipment is a disaster. The first paintball gun I was given was so bad that I think I could throw the paintballs more accurately. The second gun which seemed better at first broke a seal with the CO2 tank after maybe 5 pulls of the trigger causing an explosive sound which leaked all the air from the tank. Suffice to say I had had enough for the day and will take my business and my friends to another place next time. Not worth the $45 I paid. read more

I've organized three group events for a group of about 20 graduate student here over the past year or so. Hogback has been great every time! The staff are friendly and make getting a group reservation easy. We're mostly beginners and we play against ourselves on our own fields. The terrain is great, plenty of variety (trees, open field, slopes, interesting obstacles, forts, and hiding spots)- the staff are nice about letting you go back to a favorite, and giving you a few tips on how to play on each field if you ask. They are definitely safety-conscious here, and the refs have been really relaxed and helpful each time.They take group pictures afterwards too. On our last trip the guns did leak bullets a bit, but the staff gave us a free bag of replacement bullets to make up for it so we were satisfied. Plus the drive our to Hogback is just gorgeous and so pastoral- its very pretty. read more

First time I've ever gone paintballing in my life and I'm so glad this is where my friends and I went! I've honestly never seen my one friend so happy! Staff is good at their jobs and polite. More than happy to help out beginners. The prices are also extremely reasonable. The equipment isn't the newest, but it does the job. I'm definitely hooked. Will be buying my own mask and probably my own marker for the next time I go. Might even invest in a season pass. Only knock I have is that cell service is nonexistent and I needed it to call a dog walker since we stayed hours longer than we planned to because of how much fun we were having. read more

All of the fields are great and unique. Some of the game modes are duel flag/elimination, others are single flag first to capture, and at least one is single flag attack/defend. Dead zones are set up near the fields so that you don't have to go all the way back to the shop for refills or to take a break. They do a number of scenarios thoughout the year that play on all the fields at the same time, always great fun. The field is safe, and prices are fair. One thing that first time goers should be aware of is there is a bit of a hill to walk up to the playing area, for that reason I recommend bringing what equipment youll want with you so that you don't have to come back down. If your using GPS to get there, it will tell you that you've arrived long before you do. Just keep going down that road until your at the end, you will know when you are there. read more

I took a group of about 20 here for a teambuilding corporate event in November 2013. Most of us had never done paintball before. The staff was fun, knowledgeable, and patient with our group of distracted people who just couldn't wait to get out there. My group had a great time and they still talk about our paintball experience to this day. So many funny memories from it. This place is great. I've played here since the late 90's but the new ownership has done a great job of carrying the torch, probably a better job than the previous owner to be honest. I have my own gear and can't comment on the rental equipment but the negative reviews seem to just be trolls promoting other fields. They have a 20 foot rule which is very beginner friendly, making this the best option for new players. The woods fields here are better than anything else in the area due to the hilly terrain which keeps me coming back even though I'm more experienced. read more

I have been playing for about 3 years, and I have my own gun so its not like I'm a novice. I live in D.C. and it is about an hour and 15 minute drive from my house. It is a bit out of the way, but it is paintball, so obviously it can't be in the city. If you are a novice and looking to get a lot of people out (if you are a walk on), you won't get many people. Because all the times I have been there have been more than 30 people walking on, and really good people with high tech guns and stuff like that only get the "kills." But if you have a group of your own it is better, and probably more fun. But walking on is still fun though. The courses are about a 5-7 minute walk from where you enter to get to them, but they feel like forever especially to get to the far course. To me there is only one really good course, but there are 2 OK courses. There are 7-9 courses in total. The woods on the courses are bit thick though. Bring money, because it is a bit pricy. They do provide a pretty good lunch there, for just $5. The staff is really good and nice. Check out their website though. I do not like "Big Games" though, especially the IA Drang Campaign. I have been to both Hogback and Pev's paintball. If I had to choose between them I would choose Pev's in Aldie, VA. Hogback is not bad, I would just prefer Pev's. read more

Hogback paintball is by far the best paintball place I've been within 100 miles of DC, the staff were friendly and very helpful below the mountain, and once we were up, the refs were fantastic and were full of helpful tips, they also managed to get us in any "war zone" we wanted without having to wait more than 5 minutes. We were up there for over 4 hours and not once was a staff member not helpful. The guns were great to use and the staff stayed on top of making sure they were full of compressed air. Overall, I will never go to another place again and am very fortunate I found this place. DON'T GO ANYWHERE ELSE read more

This is definitely my go to spot. I saw a few renters having issues with their equipment but the staff seemed to be right on top of things. The refs are demanding when it comes to safety which is excellent because newbies are usually negligent and can hurt somebody.
