We've been buying from Hoi Yeung for a decade and the original owners are no longer there... the difference was mind blowing! As soon as we approached the doors to go in we smelled a horrible aroma we never smelled before! It was beyond the usual fresh fish smell that we were used to. My daughter had to step back out because she felt nauseated . The fish in the tanks were crowded and the water was murky/ unclean! The display was sloppy and unappealing..We usually by red shrimp but they didn't have none and the shrimp they had were all headed.. There was absolutely no ambiance nor customers like before but we took a chance and purchased 2 whole catfish for $33.00!! I wanted to buy ginger too but it was old and sprouting so the lady gave it to us free. I couldn't wait to fry the fish and made coleslaw to go with it and bread. My expectations were murdered when I tasted it..the flavor was way off and I couldn't eat it!! The smell was weird and we were disappointed to say the least.. I literally cried because we took an Uber there plus the $33 bucks and it was a complete waste of money. A bag of frozen shrimp was $30 & wasn't even wild caught. I don't see this business being around longterm like the original owners because the quality just isn't there. I had diarrhea later on so it's a no for me! We used to spend an hour there with the previous owners, laughing and buying $175 worth of seafood . Fresh Salmon , red snapper, shrimp, . Those days are forever gone and we'll Never go back unless they're gonna refund our money which I doubt. Every year I'm here for live dungeons crab for my gumbo. They will kill and clean at no additional cost. Good selection of live and fresh seafood, plus cooking pantry essentials. Always friendly and helpful, good prices (considering). On street paid parking. There is a paid lot as well. I always go first thing in the am, no lines, I'm just in and out. I love getting my seafood from this place! At times they are the only ones who have LIVE blue crabs. I always call before I come. Today was no different. Called to ask before going blindly and they confirmed. When I got there I thought it was strange that the crabs were on ice but I went with it. Cooked them and they were all mushy :-( I called back really upset (in a crazy moment of hanger) and despite my spiciness, the woman who answered was really nice. She allowed me to come back to the store to make things right. AMAZING customer service. We talked about our miscommunication and I'm heading home feeling better about the whole situation. They also have a nice seafood counter (ie. scallops and oysters). Prices of the crab and lobster vary depending on market price but it's usually $7.99-$10.99 per pound. There's also a small paid lot ($2-3) half a block down the street if you can't find street parking. So fellas, jazz up date night, battle the madness at Chinatown and pick up some live seafood at Hoi Yeung Co and surprise that special someone (or some girl you're trying to sleep with) with a fresh, home cooked seafood meal! read more

Great customer service. The guy who I think was the owner/manager answered all my questions and was very patient with me. Came in here to buy dungeness ($7.99/lb) and oysters ($3.99/lb or $45 for 60 oysters). The crab was pretty much cut and dry (I want 4, came to around $60) but the oysters needed a bit of thinking as they had pacific oysters (which were large and have heavy thick shells) and wantinf about 3 dozen, it would cost the same or even more than the box of 60 oysters for $45. I asked the guy to weigh a dozen oysters so I had an idea how much three dozen would be ($17/dozen). He willingly obliged and took some oysters to weigh them. I ended up telling him I want them by weight rather than waste a lot of oysters by saving money and buying a box. He then went on to say that he will give me 30 oysters for $25. I was ecstatic! They packed my oysters in a plastic bag with ice to keep them fresh and off I went. They validate if you park in the lot beside the market. Went home and spent the whole afternoon shucking my oysters. They smelled and tasted like the ocean, salty, sweet and fresh. The crabs were so fat we had to dump rice in it to clean out the guts. I'm a huge supporter of mom & pop stores, so this one fits the bill quite nicely. They have a great selection of seafood from shrimp to salmon to oysters. Available items obviously vary since seafood is seasonal. I got four Maine lobsters here for a BBQ and the meat was delicious. I've had problems in the past buying live lobster from other stores because they keep them too long and the meat shrinks. The store is good at turning over inventory quickly so everything I need is always fresh. There is usually a crowd in the afternoon and also early weekends. I believe the owners valid for parking across the street if you purchase over $25 dollars. read more

This is a small little fish market in Chinatown. It's a great place to pick up fish if you're in the area, if it's live seafood/fish, the employees there will clean and gut the fish for free. $8.99/lbs lobster sounds cheap, but when u get a lobster & it comes out $15+, it's not that cheap. And they put the lobsters in a big brown paper bag before weighing. I go to San Pedro, where I buy a lobster for $16/17 & they cook it for me for free. Usually lobsters have meat in the tails & claws. So it's not a lot. Unless u can spend hrs cooking lobster bisque :) Ultimately, it's a bit pricy for lobster there. I'd rather buy lobster tails from Von's/Ralph's. I'd get almost same amount of meat for much more cheaper price. I also wanted to buy small fresh squid for calamari. But they had big frozen squid (the kind u get in thai restaurant) and it was expensive. $7.99/lbs for squid is ridiculous. Buy fresh small squids from Sea Food Market for $2 or less The good side is, you can buy live fresh Lobster, crab & tilapia from here. And the customer service is pretty good read more

I went there on Mother's Day morning (Happy Mother's Day to me), and there was a little line out the door. The place is small, clean and everyone was super helpful. I asked questions about the different types of crab legs, and no one made me feel rushed. The person helping me (wish I knew his name) helped me get the right amount for the three of us. When I asked for more (my kids are big eaters!), he suggested I buy less! What merchant does that? A honest one, that's who! He was worried that we might not be able to eat it all, but since I insisted, he gave me some pointers on how to freeze the leftovers. I got two different kinds of crab legs, and they were delicious! Hoi Yeung is a small store on North Broadway in Chinatown LA that has live Dungeness crabs in water tanks and fresh oysters on the shell my Dad wanted. Avoiding the trek to Redondo or San Pedro, this store has a small selection of fresh fish and live shell food. Got 4 live Dungeness crabs, half a dozen of fresh oysters on the shell for about $80, an average price but saved me the trip south to Redondo or San Pedro the day before Christmas.
