Saw many reviews of this place when it first opened and I finally got to try it this year. Small portions but great if you are looking for something light. Got the mixed noodles and mixed chicken and pork rice. Also got the sweet potato fries to start, very sweet. It's similar to the honey butter chips. The food came super quickly! Casual atmosphere with cute lanterns on the ceiling. It was quite cold. Every time the door opened, it became chilly even when seated inside eating. This was my first time trying mi-sua. The broth is silky with a smoky seafood taste. It became more watery with time. The noodles were short and thin. Yeah!! I finally got to try an authentic Taiwanese restaurant at First Markham Place. "Hoja" means delicious in Taiwanese and that caught my attention since last year. The decor is full of colourful lanterns and simple furniture. However, the metal chairs are not comfy at all. That could be changed. The service was quick for lunch. I got the business lunch set which the vermicelli noodle soup came quickly. I wish it was hotter in temperature and that it had more coriander. I also had to ask for the black vinegar to go with it which it should have been given. The spicy sauce was already at the table. The pickled cabbage was a nice crunchy side. The winter melon tea was nice, but not enough tapioca since I paid extra for that. The popcorn chicken was amazing. They nailed that one and also, the deep fried tofu. Very home-cooking style, nothing extraordinary, but a tasty light meal with traditional Taiwanese flavouring. It's a small and casual restaurant with only seating for about 20-25 but it moves quite quickly. You order using a QR code and your phone, and can even pay for your bill directly from your phone. Saying sorry to us about the wait. And they tried to give me a chair to have a seat with a baby. We got a small kid's bowl, kid's fork, and high chair. They have the small size bowl with original price and midsize bowl for +$1. Small bowl was too little, most of adults would take middle size. I really wanted to like this place but there were too many things I didn't like to recommend Hoja. I know most people won't read the whole thing so before you go, be aware that the noodle broth has a strong dashi taste. See the noodle section below for more details. I had both of their business lunches for is a pretty good deal. When the bowls come you'll think they are small but they use 70/30 FAT to meat ratio so it's really heavy. The positives first... Taiwanese sausage - came and they were great. So much umami, sweetness, and a rough grind on the meat. Easily the best thing there. 9/10 Drinks (winter melon and milk tea) were good. They're nothing special. Milk tea - kind of tastes like a watered down kirin milk tea that comes in bottles at Asian grocery stores. 6/10 Winter melon tea was interesting because it has a barley taste to it. I'm not really knowledgeable in different winter melon teas but my wife likes it. It starts off really sweet but mellows out as ice melts. 8/10 Ok here's where things take a turn for the worst. Mixed meat noodle bowl - this came first and as soon as we tried it we both were dreading to take another bite. It has a really strong dashi taste to it, something we weren't expecting for this kind of dish. The broth is also really thick like mucous (a good thing) but the noodles were over cooked so there was no variety in textures. The mushy noodles were purely a sauce transportation device and unfortunately we didn't like the sauce. The meat itself is ok, but if you're familiar with velveting meat in canto cooking, this is what they did but with too much breading. 3/10 but mostly because we didn't like the dashi taste for something like this. Chicken rice bowl - this could have been so good!!! The chicken was great, the second best thing we had. Crispy, umami, juicy. The fish stick was mushy and nothing really redeeming about it. The rice was also overcooked so it had the texture of oatmeal. The worst thing was the sauce, give us more sauce with meat in it!!! I get that you use 70/30 fat/meat ratio but maybe consider adjusting that. A couple of bites of fatty oatmeal and I didn't want anymore. 6/10, chicken on its own 8/10. Now the condiments, they provided some pickled radish but the pickle on them was really quick. My wife likes it that way but I thought the fattiness really needed more acid to break it up. The hot sauce is ok, nothing special I would want to buy direct from them. The aesthetics is the place are really cute though. I don't think we'll come back. Would I recommend it? Maybe... maybe it was just whoever cooked it that day did a poor job but with everything being over done on a weekday afternoon, I'm not really interested in giving them a second chance. Maybe knowing it's a dashi broth going into it you'll like it more! Oh also for such a small menu, time from ordering to getting the food was really long, maybe 20 min for something that is mostly already made. I've seen a lot of buzz around this spot and heard from my cousin that it tasted very comparable to the food she had in Taiwan while travelling abroad. I am a huge huge huge fan of Taiwanese food and this place gets my stamp of approval. It's pretty much on par with what I think is the GOAT of Taiwanese food here in the GTA, that being Papa Chang's. Anyway, I had the Taiwanese popcorn chicken rice bowl for lunch which was around $10 + tax and it was the perfect portion for lunch for me. The inside is decorated so beautifully and vibrant. You can see the workers preparing food behind the counter. They had a mountain of popcorn chicken ready to go. For a random Wednesday at lunch it was so packed. Very convenient as it lets you step out because the restaurant texts you when your table is ready. We went in a Friday for lunch and it was fairly busy, the wait wasn't too ling though. We ordered the pomelo pickled radish, basil fried chicken, taiwanese sausage, minced meat noodles and the rice with braised pork. Visited HOJA Mi-Sua after seeing it recommended all over social media. Parking was available out front but if you've been to FMP, it gets ultra busy around noon and dinner. The restaurant itself is small with pretty tight seating, but the decor has a cozy street food vibe. I ordered the Lo-Bah-Png (Braised Pork Rice) with Taiwanese Sausage, Basil Salted Crispy Chicken to share, and an Iced Wintermelon Tea. The food came out fast for everyone else, but mine took longer and wasn't hot. Most of the items are not made to order, but are pre made and sitting under a heat lamp waiting to be served. The crispy chicken arrived first. It was alright but lacked basil. The braised pork rice was underwhelming. There was a scoop of fatty pork bits, but very little actual meat. The ratio felt more like 70% fat to 30% meat. Sausages were dry and barely warm. More pickled veggies would've helped balance the heaviness. There was not a lot of intestines for the order of Intestine Misua. Be careful with the chili oil because it's very spicy. Lastly, the Wintermelon Tea was far too sweet for me, easily above 100% sugar level (no option to change when ordering online and I didn't think of asking). We love this restaurant so much! To be honest, we've already been here 4 times. Our favorite is the Taiwanese Intestine Vermicelli. If you don't like or a bit intimidated by the pork instestine, you don't need to add it. You can replace it by oysters, popcorn chicken or just plain vermicelli. Their service is excellent. I asked a server for a high chair for my kid. Even if we found my kid didn't fit in that chair and asked her to take it away. She still polite and smiley. The food here is very mediocre, I would not really choose to dine here again with so many better options nearby. And I would certainly not like up again. The Vermicelli has a very smoky flavour. The first bite really throws you off but the more you eat it, you get accustomed to the taste. The pork Belly used for the rice is too fatty. It would be better if it wasn't all pork Belly pieces. First things first, there's a tablet at the front to queue up virtually because there aren't much space for you to stand at the entrance while the tables and seating are quite small already. Decided to check out the NEW Hojia Mi Sua at FMP after seeing it on social media :) I was really excited to come try the Taiwanese oyster dishes (saw the menu listed on Google - 蚵仔麵線, 蚵仔滷肉飯, 塔香蚵仔酥) but it was not available when I was there yesterday. I guess I will have to come back another time because I love that oyster dish. We opted in for the Popcorn Chicken Mi Sua (aka Taiwanese vermicelli noodles), and the Taiwanese Sausage Lo Bah Png (aka minced braised pork rice). Both were tasty. Some might not like the popcorn chicken drenched in the soup but I thought it was a nice change :) It was our first time trying mi sua, definitely very different from regular noodles, and it reminded me of a soup 碗仔翅 we have in HK lol. The pork rice was up to my standard; it was delicious and the pork was not overly salty/fat. We also ordered the Braised Tofu and Boiled Veggies. Initially, the tofu felt a bit bland, but adding that black vinegar they provided for us, it really elevated the dish. The ambiance was very cute inside with all the handprinted/painted lanterns. I ordered the Taiwanese style vermicelli with intestines. The soup was thick and I really enjoyed the consistency of it. Flavour wise it was also very good. I wish they put more noodles in it though because I was left with a lot of soup which I brought home so I could boil noodles on my own to eat up the rest of it. The intestines tasted pretty good too even though I'm not huge on it. For the customer service, they were really friendly. I went on a weekday for lunch and it was pretty busy. I definitely want to come back and try more of their dishes! read more
