Cutest Korean restaurant !Well thought out design.Great place for date or meet up w your gal pals.Food was Korean fusion.Wish I could have tried all their dishes.Service was efficient

Hojokban does flavors incredibly well. We ordered the octopus tteokbokki, rose dakgalbi, and ramyun fried rice - all were amazing! I've never had such tender octopus as we did in their tteokbokki - the flavor of the dish is unique with a Korean/Chinese fusion flavor. The rose dakgalbi is creamy and we loved the soft glass noodles. And you can't go wrong with ramyun and fried rice.

To start off, the service was so good that they were constantly on top of refilling our banchan. If you look at it with enough optimism, it is practically inching into AYCE territory. We started with the Beef Tartare and Truffle Potato Pancake, and wooooowwww - best beef tartare I've had. Which, coming from a Korean restaurant, somehow made it even funnier. It was incredibly fresh, light, and refreshing. The lotus root chips were muah (*chef's kiss*). The truffle potato pancake was elite too. Super crispy, packed with truffle flavor, and paired with a dip that pulled everything together. Honestly, the appetizers alone had me feeling a little mind blown. For our mains, we got the Hojok Galbi and the Perilla Oil Noodle, which felt much more standard in comparison. The Hojok Galbi was a bit underwhelming, especially after we've been eyeing it so hard. The meat was definitely tender, but the flavor was fairly expected and did not stand out. The perilla oil noodles were also solid but straightforward with it being light, refreshing, and pleasant. Just not particularly memorable. Overall, we did enjoy our meal and had a great time. The appetizers absolutely stole the show, to the point where the entrees felt like they were opening for them. 4.5/5.

I came during their collab with Gebangsikdang, which is a place ive been to in Korea that offers these same raw marinated crab set menus. Overall I thought the set was nicely curated; I liked every thing that came included. And in general it's hard to find places that do raw marinated crab, so I was happy this collab was happening. It's above average prices but a really great all around meal.

We wanted to try a modern Korean restaurant while visiting NYC, and the reviews sounded great. It's definitely a cool-kid spot that blends a trendy, modern vibe with Korean food. We made a reservation about a month in advance, which was easy enough. I completely understand the concept, and Korean cuisine absolutely deserves recognition beyond just comfort food. However, this place fell short for me, particularly when it came to the food, and I didn't quite understand the hype. To me, it feels more like a trendy place you try once rather than somewhere you keep coming back to because the food is so good. Honey Fried Chicken was the best thing we ate. Ramyun Fried Rice was honestly disappointing. It tasted exactly like cup noodles mixed with rice and nothing more. The empty cup placed on top felt more performative than creative. There were also very few noodles or other ingredients, so it mostly tasted like rice with Shin Ramyun flavoring. What do they do with all the noodles?! Perilla Oil Noodle was just greasy with very little flavor. Hojok Galbi was surprisingly small. The meat had more of a boiled texture, which threw us off a bit. It was served with a tiny salad tossed in what seemed like a gochujang-based sauce. At this price point, I would have expected a more carefully executed dish, perhaps served with rice or a small soup. Unfortunately, this dish didn't work for us at all. Hotteok Ice Cream didn't really taste like hotteok, but it was still enjoyable as a dessert. Service, however, was efficient and attentive. They frequently refilled the two banchans we had--radish kimchi and sweet potato--which we appreciated. I'm happy to pay for higher prices when the food delivers, but in this case the execution fell short and it ultimately didn't feel worth it.

Came to HoJokBan after work on a Monday with a party of three (6:45pm reservation). We were seated across from the open kitchen, where bursts of fire from the stone grill lit up the space in bright orange, really cool to watch. The interior is beautiful, low-lit, and surprisingly spacious. We started with the octopus tteokbokki, which definitely has a kick if you're spice-sensitive, and the truffle potato pancake - great crunch and flavor. Even with sensitivities to truffle and Parmesan at the table, it wasn't overpowering and paired well. For mains, we ordered the hojok galbi (great flavor and spice from the peppers, though a bit pricey for the portion), the perilla oil noodles (cold, refreshing, and one of my favorites), and the tiger budae jjigae. The jjigae wasn't anything wild--ramen with pantry-style toppings--but the broth was solid and balanced out the meal nicely. The banchan were excellent, especially the sweet potato with kimchi. Service was attentive but not intrusive, with water and sides consistently refilled. Overall, a strong experience! beautiful space, solid food, and good service. 8.9/10.

    TRUFFLE POTATO PANCAKE

Let's me tell you, there is a reason the reviews are so highly rated of this place. Let's start with the service. Our waiter was super kind and friendly. He set a solid standard for what to expect for the dinner. The overall mood of the place gives fun/happy vibes in a well-lit area for nice conversation. We were sat at the bar, which had more than enough space for three dishes. Now, let's get to the best part, the food. The truffle potato pancakes are AMAZING. They're small crunchy bites of pure joy. The ramyun fried rice isn't necessarily worth it to me ($18) but it gets a pass since it tasted sooooo good. It had a nice smoky flavor to it. Finally, the Hojok Galbi was the star of the show. It was incredibly tender and came with a spicy salad that paired nicely with it. We saved half of the fried rice to eat with it, and let me tell you, that is the move!! It's soooo good together. Overall, new favorite Korean spot in NYC!

I've given up trying to keep count of the myriad fusion/updated takes on Korean cooking adorning the outskirts of Ktown. I still remember the days when Her Name Is Han was the only game in town. Hojokban is probably my favorite of the lot. I'm also a bit biased as a vegetarian, as they offer far more options (some by customization) than the rest of the contenders. At a recent lunch, I tasted the black garlic potatoes, perilla oil noodles, and bimbimbap. The perilla oil noodles had a nice clean flavor and the potatoes were indulgent, but honestly the well-executed stone bowl bimbimbap was probably the highlight of the meal. Next time I'll make sure to try the viral shin cup ramen, served complete with an actual bowl of the famous instant noodles.

Came here on a Tuesday evening with a reservation, and were seated very quickly. Service was very quick with the water and banchan refills, and the ambiance was very nice. Our favorite dish was definitely the hojok galbi. The ribs were so tender and flavorful, and the side salad paired well with them. Be careful to not eat one of the peppers though... Perilla oil noodles were refreshing and cold, and surprisingly fragrant. It balanced out the spiciness of the other dishes well. Tteobokki was very unique because of the mini octopi and the vegetables. Flavor profile was very gochujang-forward, and a bit spicy.

I loved the beef tartare and it had such a special flavor marinade with it! The army stew and bossam were also solid so overall had a great meal here. The service was also great and very fast

Went for lunch didnt realize the pop up was going on but decided to stay and try it out. I got the spicy crab roe bibimbap it was really delicious and the sides were so good I really loved the soup it was so soothing the tofu was crispy and has a delicious sauce and the crispy seafood pancakes absolutely delicious the yuja highball was so refreshing and would definitely get again. The service was 5 stars they refilled water very fast removed dishes once you finished checked on me constantly asked for feed back and had very pleasant energy constantly smiling and enjoyable to be around.

Probably won't run back with Koreatown nearby and having so many amazing restaurants. I'm also more of a traditionalist with Korean food. No regrets from this meal except us not realizing how much carb we ordered hahah. We just ordered whatever sounded good to us. But to be fair, portions were bigger than expected because we thought it was *that* kind of place. I would order the yukhwae again for sure because it tasted so clean and fresh. And the shin, ofc, but part of me feels like I should just make that myself. I would want to try the other things in the menu next time. Service was also great. Constantly checked in by multiple people.

Hojokban is one of those restaurants I've known about forever, but somehow haven't made it out to. The truffle potato pancake doesn't need much said about it - it's popular for a reason. Get it if you like crispy, truffly goodness. It was one of our favourites for the night! For mains, we got the galbi, ramyun fried rice, and perilla oil noodles. Unfortunately, we weren't super big fans of the galbi, especially considering that's their most popular dish. Would probably not get it again if we came back. The ramyun fried rice had some great smoky flavour from the bacon, which elevated it beyond your typical spicy fried rice. The perilla oil noodles were light and refreshing, a good balance to the rest of the food, but they took a long time to come out. We got the rest of our food all within the span of ~15 minutes but had to wait an additional 30+ just for the perilla oil noodles. We ended with the orange tiramisu, which was a nice take on the classic dish. Overall, we had a good time - it didn't blow my mind and the pacing was a bit off, but we still had some solid bites. I might not make explicit plans to come back, but would check it out again if I was nearby.

Their menu leans into fusion dishes with a nod to some of the classic home-style classics. Everything is presented with a refined, elevated touch. Here's what we ordered: ~ Tako Wasabi - 5/5 stars A fiery delight. This appetizer feartures chopped raw octopus marinated in wasabi. It has a lively zest from the wasabi and is topped with tobiko, which adds a pleasant contrast in texture. ~ Honey Makgeolli - 4/5 stars A traditional fermented Korean beverage that is light and pairs brilliantly with your meal. It is a cloudy alcholoic drink served in a metal teapot, and surprisingly, there is much more in that teapot than you would expect. It easily provides six to eight generous pours. The flavor is subtly sweet with a pleasant tang. ~ Temaki Set - 4/5 stars You can order a set of three by choosing from selections 1-17, or you can order a la carte at the listed prices. Some of the temaki stood out more than others. Our two sets included marinated salmon, bluefin tuna, spicy yellowtail, spicy bluefin, and two dynamite temaki. ~ Spicky Pork Ssam Set - 5/5 stars Truly another standout entree that even surpassed my beloved grilled BBQ bossam. You received a generous basket of assorte greens, including romaine, kale, perilla leaves, dandelion leaves, nappa cabbage, and more. It is well worth the price and makes for a fun, interactive dining experience with your family and friends. There is also various banchan offered and this time, they were beyond kind enough to offer refills. The last time we were here, we ordered just as much food and they stated they normally did not offer refills, which I thought was very odd. The spice lived up to its name, so I didn't eat very much. The best part was meat. Despite there being 6 of us, there was plenty to go around. I think you have the option to cook it yourself or have them cook it for you and we chose the latter. While I enjoyed it, I wish there was more space. Most of the space was taken up by the accompaniments that come with it (veggies, etc), so there was hardly any room to put anything else. It didn't help that none of our dishes were cleared once we finished them and that no rice is included. Aside from that, both the food and service were great.
