Decent restaurant for a slightly more upscale occasion. It's a very spacious venue, allowing for more privacy from other tables. Service was friendly but could be a bit more attentive in terms of water refills. They also asked us if it was ok to serve the other dishes that we ordered first before the Peking duck since that takes a while to prepare and we said yes but for some reason all the dishes ended up coming out at the same time. We weren't thrilled about that since we were already slightly hangry (as usual lol). Half classic Peking duck- Slightly overpriced but very tasty. It's not your traditional Chinese Peking duck since the duck isn't sliced as thinly but I actual prefer a thicker cut anyway. Leftover duck meat was also served on the platter, not just the bones. The wrapper as well as the usual mix-ins were also tasty. Jajangmyeon- Loved it! Noodles were springy and sauce tasted authentic. Very large portions as well and surprisingly not too expensive. Pork tangsuyuk- Very disappointing. The meat was dry and flavorless like it had been fried for too long. The sour sauce was ok but wasn't able to bring the meat to life. Skip! Overall we had a good time here and would probably come back again for special occasions. Two stars. the food was fine, the welcome was not. I came in with a friend on a slow afternoon. The lobby was empty except for us, and the dining room wasn't close to full. I greeted the host at the stand and got no response. No nod, no acknowledgment. I asked for a table for two. Again, no response. She looked at us for a few seconds with an irritated expression, then walked us to a table and seated us without saying a single word the entire way. Throughout this interaction I experienced many racial micro-aggressions. I look South Asian; my friend is white. I'll let readers weigh that detail however they want. What I can say plainly is that's the least welcome I've felt in a NY restaurant in years, and there was no rush, no crowd, and no reason for it. I tried the Seoul lunch set ($22.95) which included jajangmyeon, two wontons in spicy oil, kimchi and sides, and your choice of one of four options: fried pork, soy glazed chicken, crispy shrimp sandwich, or spicy poached dumpling. My favorite part about the lunch set were the handmade noodles in the jajangmyeon. Noodle texture was excellent, and you can tell they're made fresh. Walked in without a reservation on a saturday around 12:30 PM and were seated immediately, as the restaurant was pretty empty. Stopped by for lunch when they just opened. The place wasn't that busy yet, but many were taking out orders. We ordered the gunset set, jajangmyeon, and avocado cream king prawns. The jajangmyeon was a little disappointing; the black bean sauce was watery, and the pork had too much cooking wine, which diluted its flavor. The avocado cream king prawns were huge, but without the batter, they were extra jumbo-sized shrimp. Can't taste any avocado, other than lemon mayo. Overpriced for six prawns. I do like that they used glutinous rice flour in the batter for frying; it makes it thin, but it gets soggy fast since they pour the sauce on top instead of dipping it, especially with the tangsuyuk. Sadly, the offerings do not have any vegetarian customizations, other than the mapo tofu "Szechuan set," which still comes with a shrimp sandwich even for vegetarians. Treated myself to lunch today... had OCTO bookmarked for a bit, and decided to try their lunch menu. They offer a pretty good range of lunch sets... it's a decent deal considering it's midtown. Octo is spacious, with high ceilings and booth seats. I came solo, no reservations. Able to accommodate and seated me quickly. I like they offer hot tea... I got the Gunsan set, which comes with the Korean version sweet & sour pork (Tangsuyuk) and a spicy seafood noodle soup (Jjamppong). Sides with some pickled radish, cucumber, and poached dumplings. The dumplings were quite yummy! The seafood Jjamppong was good, love the spiciness on a wintry day. BUT the biggest left down was the Tangsuyuk... I love this dish in Korea... so I was quite disappointed when this dish lacked the "crunchy", "tangy" and the meat was too thick. The sauce got too stuck on the pork instead of a glaze... We asked for extra lettuce in order to have the right number for the meat. At most Korean restaurants, extra lettuce does not cost extra. However, here they charge without saying! That aside, the jellyfish dish I thought would be like other Chinese restaurants. This one is super salty, and the part of jellyfish served is the head which is basically like eating cartilage. Jjajangmyeon - may be the most decent place in manhatran; certainly better than hyo dong gak but still missing that umami. Tangsuyuk - large pieces of pork which honestly make it hard to eat but the meat is good quality and large portions. It's wildly bland as if there isn't even salt in the batter. They do provide soy sauce upon request. The traditional accompanying sauce is also pretty clean and uneventful which lends to the clean aesthetic kind of feel of the food here. The tasting menu runs about $58 before tax. We also ordered mocktails, which were tasty but definitely overpriced for a non-alcoholic drink. The tasting menu included jellyfish salad, shrimp sandwich, kimchi dumpling, truffle shumai, Peking duck (5 pieces each), XO scallop, and black pepper beef. Octo has been one of my favourite Korean(-Chinese) restaurants since it opened, and I wish I remembered to come by more often! Food is always delicious, portion sizes really big, prices very reasonable, and even just the restaurant itself is just comfortably spacious and nicely decorated. Some of my favourite dishes: - tang su yuk: I get this every single time I come, it's amazing. The meat is so tender and flavourful and the fried batter outside is always crispy without being too oily/heavy. I think the sauce is nothing too special. The portion size is really big for the price, we've never been able to finish one plate of this before haha. - jjajangmyeon: another huge bowl that's always too much to finish. The noodles are deliciously chewy and the sauce was very rich without weighing down the noodles. I think the proportions of pork/sauce/noodles is always a bit weird (you end up with too much sauce left over). They recently added a "brunch" special for this (available on weekends) that's only $12 (!!) - Mala beef soup: I really like the variety of ingredients in this soup -- the beef brisket and glass noodles are super yummy. Veggies tended to be a bit bland. Definitely a lot of food every time I go -- enough for at least 1 meal's worth of food to take home (!). We came here on a Sunday night and it was super quiet, no need for reservations as there were plenty of tables available. As we were too lazy to figure out what to order, we opted for the tasting menu which seemed to have come with all their popular dishes. Some of our favorites included the shrimp toast, duck, pepper beef, and noodles. A couple of dishes were excellent such as the shrimp toast and duck, while everything else felt just good to ok. We had a lot of courses of food. My favorites were the duck, shrimp sandwich, jellyfish salad, scallop, and truffle sui mai. The duck was good, a bit too thick and chewy for me but I liked the sauce and toppings. I had Peking duck in China and you just can't beat that. The shrimp cake was large and perfectly fried. I loved the sweetness of the jellyfish salad and the mushroom that was in it. I had jellyfish salad before that was more stringy and mushy, this was crunchy. Either they put a lot of cabbage in it instead of jellyfish or this was just different than what I have had before. The kimchi soup dumpling was too spicy for me, wish we got the normal flavor. My entree at the end was a noodle dish that was very wet and soggy in a really dark and sweet sauce with way too many pieces of onion (Jajanmyeon). That was not my favorite. Also they ran out of the lemongrass soda I really wanted to try. The scallop was one giant scallop on a shell, it was perfectly cooked and flavorful. We also got a meat dish, not sure what it was but the meat was tender. I liked the veggies with it but the sauce was too thick and sweet for me.
