I am torn. It's not bad but I had a craving for soondae and it wasn't quite satisfied here. Dweji gukbap and small soondae. The soup is mild but tasty, though you do need to doctor it up with the fixings that include gochujang and fermented shrimp. There's a good mix of pork cuts but I did run into some tougher pieces. The soondae was disappointing. Mild and missing the funk and earthy flavor. I wanted to like it but it seems like they toned down the dishes to make them more accessible. read more

I came back to visit with some friends after a long time. We were a table of three and two of us got seated while we waited for our friend to arrive. Afterwards, the server came over to order and I asked for a few more minutes and he seemed so annoyed, didn't say anything and walked away. I know we were taking a while to order, but it wasn't like the restaurant was super busy and people were waiting for tables. Felt so rude of him. We ordered the ox tail stew which was new and delicious. The flavor was good but I was so shocked at the portion size. For $48, I expected a bigger portion maybe to feed two people but it was really a single person portion. The clam kalguksu was not bad, big portion size. The jokbal was okay but was quite salty and I'm surprised it also had bones. Usually jokbal just comes with meaty pieces and no bones. They also give 10% off if you pay with cash. It was my first time trying their seafood japchae, and while it was a bit on the greasy side, the abundance of shrimp, mussels, and fresh vegetables such as mushrooms, carrots, and scallions helped balance it out nicely. The flavors were satisfying, and the generous seafood portion made it even better. I also ordered the TteokManSoon, which had just the right amount of spice enough to add a kick without overpowering the dish. Maybe it was because we came toward the end of the evening, but they only offered two--daikon and regular kimchi. Kimchi jjigae had really great spicy flavor, and I especially enjoyed the chunks of meat in the stew. Kalguksu was incredibly large, and was the perfect comforting dish on a cold day. We came by Tosokchon for a late weekend lunch (around 2pm) -- the place was still bustling and practically full, but our party of 2 was still able to get seated roughly immediately. It's very lively inside and a bit loud (but not too hard to talk). We ordered the spicy pork hot pot bibimbap and the galbi tang to share; both were very delicious. The bibimbap looked really spicy and heavy, but fortunately it was neither -- the pork was cooked nicely without being too oily or salty, and the dish was nicely balanced with the fluffy rice, egg, and various veggies. The galbi tang was also great. The broth was clear and fragrant, and I love how rich the beef aroma came through in the soup. The beef itself was very tender and flavourful, and the radish and egg were yummy, too. Overall portion size was pretty large, which might explain the higher prices than expected. We got the seafood, egg, pancake, with some beef stew which was delicious deliciously, sweet and so tender and juicy. NYC's Koreatown is quite the saturated market when it comes to great Korean fare, so we wanted to see if the relatively new Tosokchon at 33rd Street Ktown NYC could measure up! It's part of the same restaurant family as the beloved Tosokchon in Annandale (and Palisades Park, NJ), serving up homestyle Korean food. It truly is a "blink and you'll miss it" kind of place - when we visited, it was tucked away behind scaffolding. The interior mimics a traditional hanok style, with paper-screen partitions and cozy, folk‑inspired decor, and exposed brick walls and metal pipes for an Korean-industrial-chic appearance. At around 8pm on a Monday night (it was Memorial Day), the restaurant was about half-full, though it's important to note that they boast long hours: 11:30am-4:00am Mon-Wed, 11:30am-6:00am Thurs-Sat, and 11:30am-10:30pm on Sunday - perfect for getting your Korean fix at odd hours. Our party of two spent a good time exploring the extensive menu, where there's options for everyone, ranging from your more well-known Americanized classics (think bibimbap, bulgogi, etc.) to hearty stews (Gamjatang...yum) to housemade noodles (such as kalguksu and nangmyeon) to fun, adventurous meat platters (soondae or chicken feet?). There's truly something for everyone and every occasion! Additionally, the banchan (Korean side dishes) that they serve here is simple, but really well done: their kimchi is fresh, crunchy, and perfectly spicy (though maybe a bit too hot for the less spice-inclined), and their kkakdugi (spicy pickled radish) is solid if not stellar. My companion opted for the Yukgaejang Kalguksu ($21), which is a titanic bowl of fresh, al-dente knifecut noodles in an addictively spicy broth with plenty of shredded beef and tender vegetables. I kid you not when I say the bowl was larger than the biggest pho bowl we've ever had, and that's certainly saying something. The broth was complex and deep without being overly greasy, and they didn't skimp on the beef, which was neither stringy nor fatty. The noodles truly soaked up the flavors of the broth, and the vegetables added a nice touch. I chose their Jokbal ($20 for small portion), which comes with a mountain of thinly-sliced, succulent pig's trotter served on the bone over a steaming platter. The meat is marinated in a lovely sweet soy sauce, with fresh ginger, garlic, and jalapenos served on the side. Jokbal is often hard to find in the States given an American aversion to eating certain parts of animals, so this was a rare treat. It's an incredibly large portion of tender meat with the perfect combination of lean pork, toothsome cartilage, and rich fat. It's even better when paired with their ssamjang (spicy soybean paste) and kimchi! Overall, we had an amazing dinner at Tosokchon: the portions are the most generous we've seen at reasonable prices, the food is flavorful and fun, and it's a place where you can order unique Korean dishes that you often can't find in the States. Service was a bit slow (understandable, given it was a holiday weekend) but kind, and you really can't beat the value or food at this place...a definite five stars! read more

Swung by for a late dinner on a Monday night around 10:00 PM and they were about 30-40% capacity. Not a specific dish, but I really enjoyed their cabbage kimchi, which is usually the hallmark of a solid Korean place. Rose Tteokbokki (4/5): Sauce was super creamy, sweet, and very lightly spiced. Rice cakes were nice and chewy. The dish was just all around solid, but not necessarily anything to write home about. Bossam (4.25/5): Super tender and great savory flavor throughout. This is my friends and I's FAVORITE late-night spot. Regardless of whenever you go, the restaurant is almost always packed--even if it's 5am on a weekend. The interior is spacious with lots of tables and seating, TVs playing videos, and good music. Service is pretty solid and quick here. I've been able to try a lot of different things on their menu and have thoroughly enjoyed everything that I've tried (as you can see through my photos). One of my friend's and I's go-tos, however, is their bossam, which is SO good. We make wraps with their napa cabbage, kimchi, and doenjang and it always hits the spot. Came here for dinner and the place was surprisingly packed on a Wednesday. We ordered two noodle dishes (yukgaejang kalguksu and mandu kalguksu) and both were decent, certainly not the best we've had, especially given the area. With that being said, I still think this place is a good alternative to the super crowded street and restaurants on the main strip of 32nd Street. The food was very mid. I won't say that it was bad because I did enjoy it but I can't say it was any better than good. Both of the kimchis that they gave us were also very mid. It would have been better had they grilled it, made it spicier, and/or let it ferment for longer. The portion sizes for the ramen are crazy insane big though. My friend got it and could barely finish it. I got the soondae guk which was a normal size. The rice I received was a bit over cooked and there honestly nothing really special to the soup. As for the service, it was a push call system where you push a button to call your server over. Not only did he not introduce himself to us nor really interact with us, at the end when we were paying, he told us how tipping was mandatory. When we had said we were college students his response was "It doesn't matter. Whether you're 3 years old, elderly, or a college student, you have to pay the tip." We tipped and left right after. This place was also pretty pricey. The cheapest entree was $20 and the soju was $17 for a singular bottle which I think is outrageous. The only points I can give them is for the ambiance.
