Hokkaido is a solid choice for simple, casual Japanese food. We're from Austin and the only Japanese restaurants in our area are overpriced fusion ramen, low-ish quality sushi, or very expensive omakase. It was very nice to find somewhere we could bring our 2 year old and have some comfort food. The vibe was very chill and it sort of felt like we were back in Japan for a second lol. The ramen was delicious and the quality of the fish in the Fire Island Roll was excellent. Our server was so kind and helpful. Came here on a Saturday night for dinner and it was pretty crowded. It was a chilly day so a good bowl noodle soup is always my default option. To start off, service was great. We had 4 adults and 2 kids in our party and our servers were attentive. As for the food, I ordered the miso ramen and thought it was pretty mid. The ramen portion was pretty generous. It came with two pieces of chashu but they were pretty thick and a bit tough to chew. The broth itself was saltier than I would have preferred. I also prefer bean sprouts to be cooked when served in ramen but they were served raw. Overall, I would rate this restaurant 3.5 stars. On the plus side, my 1 year old absolutely loved the ramen noodles. read more

The bento starts at $16.95, which is a great value considering the portions and quality. For my two selections, I chose the Vegetable Tempura and the Chicken Katsu. The tempura was perfectly crispy and light, while the Chicken Katsu--made with chicken thighs instead of the usual breast--was juicy and flavorful with a delightfully crisp coating. I ended up taking the rest to go. We also tried the Yellowtail Roll, which featured fresh fish and a well-balanced fish-to-rice ratio. My husband ordered the Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen, which included pork belly, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, scallions, and a soft-boiled egg in a spicy white shoyu broth. He's usually picky about ramen, but this one impressed him. I tasted the broth and agree--it was delicious. Lastly, he got the Lover Tuna Roll, which includes spicy tuna topped with fresh tuna, white tuna, avocado, spicy mayo, and wasabi mayo. He offered a fork for my daughter to use for the noodles but she had no interest and went to the chopsticks. He saw her struggling and returned with homemade chopstick trainers. She was pleased and then could eat well. He did this without me asking. Great attention to detail. We ordered the iced passion fruit green tea, spicy tonkotsu, kids ramen (shoyo) with an egg and spicy beef ramen to go. The green tea was refreshing and it was served in a cool cup with a sipping option or straw. The spicy tonkotsu ramen was absolutely delicious. Medium spice was perfect for me. I liked the crunchy toppings and the ramen egg was jammy and umami station. I tried my daughter's shoyu ramen which was also so good! We had two to-go bags with our leftovers and to go order and I was struggling to think how I was going to carry it out with my newborn. We were attracted by the stellar rating, but all three of us agreed it was just okay. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. We ordered a poke bowl, ramen bowl, and bento box. Each person's order was brought to the table separately rather than all three orders arriving at once, and there was a good 15 minutes between the arrival of the bento box and the ramen bowl. It was a good thing we're family and decided to dig in instead of waiting for everyone's meal to arrive, as person #1's food definitely would have been cold by the time we were all served. The poke was very good, with fresh seafood, flavorful avocado, and yummy fried crisps. The bento box was okay - excellent teriyaki chicken but not great teriyaki beef (he didn't even eat it) and not our favorite miso. The ramen was also fine, neither top nor terrible. We always get seated as soon as we walk in and each time we've come here, the wait staff have been so kind, like they actually want to be there. It's no frills, nothing fancy. The one thing we got recently that I didn't really enjoy was the seared pork beef chasu bowl. There was too much spicy mayo. I love spicy mayo as much as the next guy, but it was swimming in it. Since I left Southern California for Texas I have been super disappointed in the sushi in the Texoma area and have just waited until I head to the West Coast to get my sushi fix. I stopped in here for lunch and it's got the Japanese vibe down. They've got the Japanese pillows in the booth seats and the old school Japanese wooden tables, a nice authentic feel to it. I got the shoyu ramen that came with 2 nice sized pieces of shoyu pork, great broth, bean sprouts, corn, bok choy, and of course ramen noodles. They were overshadowed though by the Monster Roll, which we both attacked. Each of the ingredients tasted fresh and distinct on the palette. Drove from Denton to come here because of the reviews. The waitress was super nice. We ordered shrimp shumai, pork buns as appetizer. The Shumai was not my favorite but the pork buns were good. Lots of white pepper flavor. We ordered several sushi dishes. The Spicy ninja and Naruto rolls were good. The Alaska was alright but had to remove all the cucumbers because it only had the peels in the rolls. They were super hard and bitter. The spicy tonkatsu ramen was super salty so we added hot water. It was good but it had a lots and lots of white pepper. The pork had a lot of white pepper. We realized there were a lot of Chinese influence on the menu. We didn't expect so much white pepper on Japanese food. That's more Chinese flavor. Unfortunately, except for one person in our party, we dont like white pepper, the smell, the taste, don't like it. There were couple of other concerns, but minor. I gave it 4 stars because the other sushi were good. We looked at the restaurant as Chinese infused Japanese food restaurant. At first we thought the seasoning had a spicy and sweet flavor but realized the edamame was the sweetness which I think means the edamame was fresh and of good quality. The girls who work here are AMAZING!!!! I work next door and every time we order they are incredibly nice and accommodating. On top of that, the food is incredible!!!! The shrimp tempura was a win & the chicken karaage is a must have, not overly battered yet crispy & light. I had the tonkotsu ramen, it did not disappoint! Noodles with a bounce, delicious broth, with two large pieces of pork & a perfectly cooked soft egg. The bento boxes were packed with food with many combinations available. My cousin had vegetable tempura as one of his choices, they did not skimp on portion size... he probably had six large pieces of veggies or so. Compliments to their miso soup as well! Four of my business associates and I had a wonderful meal here tonight. We started with a chef's choice sashimi and nigiri platter and a double order of pork buns. Amazingly fresh, tasty and very generous portions. We also shared a seaweed salad and a squid salad. We also got a crunchy salmon roll and a few other rolls (see pictures) before we settled in to each our own bowl of Ramen (Spicy Miso, Spicy Beef, and Chicken Ramen. Once again, so yummy and very generous portions. We accompanied all that with several large format bottles of Kirin beer and even some hot Saki. We're delighted to have this well-run anime-themed restaurant open up close to our home, in fact it's the only restaurant we really like that's within a 10-minute drive. The food is delicious. I've tried three different ramen dishes and all were excellent. My favorite is the tonkotsu. The service is friendly and efficient. The decor is cheery. The only drawback is the background music is sometimes good, sometimes not so good. Once when we went, the music being played was pretty distracting. We think it might have been all anime show outro music. It was being played a little too loudly as well. When this happens it makes me wonder if the employees are trying to get people to leave quickly. But other times the music was fine. I've been a frequent visitor to Hokkaido for a good while now -- probably 10+ times -- and have always enjoyed the food and ambiance. Up until today, I've had no complaints. We were a party of two and ordered two bento boxes, a sushi roll, one sweet tea, and one strawberry lemonade. Our server, a woman with glasses and long hair in a braid, agreed when I specifically asked if we could get the sushi roll before the bento boxes so we could enjoy it as an appetizer. However, the first thing that arrived was my bento box. I didn't want to start eating without my partner, so it sat at the table for 5-8 minutes before his bento arrived. Almost immediately after that, another server brought out the sushi roll. By then, my food was cold, and my partner's chicken katsu was all tough gristle -- hardly any actual chicken. I considered canceling the roll, but it was already served. When it came time to pay, we planned (as usual) to get drinks to go. This has never been an issue before, as I've always gotten refills during the meal and a to-go cup at the end. But this time, our server told me I couldn't get a to-go drink unless I paid for it -- while my partner was given a sweet tea to go without any problem. This inconsistency made no sense to me. By that point, I was very disappointed. Not only was the appetizer timing off, but my meal wasn't served hot, the food quality was lacking, and the drink policy seemed applied unfairly. I truly hope this was just a one-time bad experience, because we've always enjoyed dining here. Even my partner commented on how strange the server's energy felt toward me, which was unsettling enough that I felt compelled to write this review. read more
