Started using Holiday Barn last summer after a bad experience with a previous groomer. They always groom my cocker spaniel exactly as I've requested and their customer service is consistently superb. I appreciate the compassionate way they interact with my dog when he's anxious at the beginning of his visit and he always leaves relaxed and happy. NEVER!!! Both cats needed the vet afterwards!!!!!! Horrible terrible stressful place with no understanding of CATS. Sit! Stay away!

The staff is absolutely 100% friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. However, I was so displeased with my dog's training experience that I requested a refund. The refund was given with no hassle. No apologies or discussion was offered. That struck me as odd; as if there was unspoken guilt. Is there accountability? Genuine remorse? The only staff that did respond was from Michael Hughes, the Head of the Pack. The response he sent was genuine and professional. What happened was my dog attended a free day care (coupon from orientation) and did not make it to the end of the day. She acted out towards the other dogs. I was told to come back in six (6) mos. with no further guidance. When I asked if they (trainers) could help socialize her I was told, "yes." I was reluctant to pay as I don't have that kind of money; however, I was told they (trainers) would socialize her so that day care would become a regular thing for my dog. I was very explicit about what I wanted (socialization) and did not want out of the training. I stressed multiple times, even throughout the week of training, that my dog is NOT to learn commands such as, "sit," and other commands that are not useful for this scenario. Besides, I was already training her myself. I dropped my dog off Monday morning and I reiterated very clearly what I was expecting and desiring; repeating what I precisely did NOT want her to learn. I picked her up Monday after school and asked about her progress. I was told I would not get a progress report until Friday AFTER she had completed school. I did not like that. This way my money, my dog, my concern. So, come Friday, the trainer showed us what they taught our dogs. I was furious when I saw that they had taught my dog, "Sit," "Climb," and, "Heel." These were the behaviors I explicitly did NOT pay for. I was supposed to get a dog that was now socialized with other dogs to return for day care. I was in tears when I got home. I felt swindled and they failed my dog. Now I'm back to square one. Additionally, my dog did not retain her training other than heel, but even that took effort. I was so frustrated at having to train her myself for what they got paid to do. Lastly, my dog has a very bad reaction to loud noises. This was also communicated, but they placed her in the kennel were it was extremely noisy. I did not know this until a staff told me at the end of the day on Monday, that my dog does not do well with loud noises. Yes, I know! That is why I communicated that. Nothing was done about that either. I was offered to pay a daily rent if I wanted my dog in a quieter area. It's a nice facility. If you are looking for a groomer for a breed that requires artistry (bichon frisse or standard poodle, airdale, etc.) you should probably keep looking. They did a very poor job with my standard poodle. I requested a shirt Town and country, but did not get anything close. They went very short (which is ok, hair grows back). If you go short it must be precise and crisp with neat edges. His top knot is so crooked, his private parts have a 2 inch mustache & his body is so uneven. It looks like a groomer training. Management is horrible Told me dogs were coughing and had kennel cough. Then I find out they have been using Prong collars not slip collars. Prong collars can cause a dog to cough. They kicked my dogs out. Said I had to go to a vet have them checked out before they can come back! Screw you pet barn THOSE PRONG COLLARS CAN CAUSE IRRITATION TO THE TRACHEA CAUSING A Dog TO COUGH. Awful.. don't leave your pet here. My vaccinated dog was there for a long 14 day stay.. when I picked her up she was terribly sick. I took her immediately to the vet where she was put on IVs and 2 different antibiotics. Vet diagnosed her with a severe respiratory infection and total dehydration. Holiday Barn should have notified the vet and/or my emergency contact but instead continued to put her in daily play school infecting other dogs. She was so sick that it spiraled into trachea damage and she has never regained her full energy level. When I contacted Holiday Barn with the Vet report they denied all responsibility. I've used Holiday Barn for years now and they are amazing. From boarding to grooming to camp, they provide an amazing experience for my dog. I'm happy to see they have put social distancing measures in place to keep their employees and the public safe. They have a no contact pick up and drop off process that is really simple and allows you to move through the process very quickly. It didn't take any extra time to pick up/drop off my dog for his bath and I'm glad Holiday Barn cares about the safety of both employees and customers! My dog Beaker loves Holiday Barn and I do too! Bottom line up front: I have been very impressed with Holiday Barn, though I have only used them for cat boarding. Our cat, Zoe, is very special to me. I brought her home from a deployment to Kuwait, after a lifetime of thinking I wasn't a cat person. It turns out, I am, and it took Zoe finding me in the desert for me to realize it. In December, Zoe had a couple of seizures, and was started on an anti-seizure medication. We already had a weekend trip booked for the week after they started, and were considering canceling our trip. I called Holiday Barn to get a feel for how confident they are in their ability to provide her medication and monitor for seizures, and the brief conversation I had with them on the phone put me immediately at ease. They answered my questions without hesitating and with full confidence in their ability to take care of Zoe while we were away. The woman I spoke to even recognized who Zoe was and said, "we love Zoe here." When I took Zoe in to drop her off, the woman working at the front immediately recognized her and called her by a nickname they have for her. Knowing they recognize her, and even have their own pet name for her, gave me peace with leaving her for a weekend, and allowed us to enjoy our trip with less worry. When I went over the medication with them they immediately recognized what the medication is and what it's for and handled it with professionalism and ease. I'm very happy with their customer service and how personal the care they provide is, and I highly recommend them for cat boarding. read more

Hello.... This is the second time in 15 years that I have tried the Daycare at Holiday Barn Midlothian. Many years ago I brought my 2 small poodles for daycare. It was a very hot day. I was in the area and decided to check on my dogs. They were in a play yard. It was 95 degrees. There was no supervision and all of the dogs were panting like crazy. I went to the office to bring my dogs home and told the front desk what I saw. I don't remember what was said but I scooped up my dogs and never returned. I don't know if pet owners ask the right questions but they should. Did you know that while you are on your vacation there are no cameras to see how your pet is doing. Also, even worse than that, staff leaves around 6 or 7. There is nobody there if your pet has a problem. It's ridiculous. This review goes back to when. Holiday Barn was on SouthLake Blvd. Fast forward 15 years. New facility on Johnston Will Drive. The facility is beautiful, clean and well maintained. That's why I gave it 2 stars. The rest of my review goes zero. New face same problems. I really wanted this to work. I gave it a shot. I have a 5 month old toy poodle who I wanted to socialize in Daycare. Some but not all of the front desk people were accommodating. Some were like androids. No understanding of customer service. I asked if I could see the daycare facility. No, I was told. Some BS reason was given. Do you have cameras? No, our owner doesn't believe in them. Something just doesn't smell right. I am paying money for a service for my precious puppy and nothing seems to be at all transparent. One of the daycare managers was kind enough to take a photo on her phone to show me a play area from another day. They still have no overnight help. They also don't have cameras so that you can see your pet while you are away. They nickel and time you on all extras. Getting a walk during daycare was $15 plus your daycare fee. 20 minutes of mind stimulating games was $18. My question is.... What the hell do the dogs do in daycare. Oh, you get a pretty much generic report card when you pick up your dog. They check a few items that your pet may or may not have done. They may write some small narrative that is worthless. They might even tell you who your dog played with. All in all a waste of time and money. I still would like to know what is included in the price of daycare. Very corporate. I'm very upset once again after picking my dog up from boarding at your facility. I made reservations and spoke with your staff both on the phone and in person about ensuring my dog would be boarded in the suites because the last time he stayed in other accommodations (two separate occasions) he damaged the pad of his paws by jumping up and scratching the gate. I did not care about the price, I said I wanted the half doors so my dog could look out. Instead my dog was moved to a different area that I didn't agree to when we dropped him off or made his reservation for boarding. No one called to ask if this was ok and I would've said it was not ok. When we got home my husband and I inspected our dogs paw and sure enough, it was sliced open once more. I'm so angry at the negligence and mismanagement and I'm tired of my dog becoming injured while boarding with your company! read more

We are so grateful to Holiday Barn and their amazing training staff! We started out with a leash reactive, rug destroying, shoe stealing pup. We are on our last week of the three week training program and the difference is night and day. Prior to training they offer an orientation which includes a tour of the facility. The campus is beautiful! They have three different options for boarding that range from kennels to presidential suites with TVs! We met the trainers Dickie and Melaina who explained the different training programs. They do use prong collars as well as a correcting collar which I was nervous about at first. I now understand they are necessary training tools and that the prong collar will be phased out soon. We meet with them weekly to go over what they've been working on and how to practice at home. Melaina is so patient with us and our pup. My blood pressure used to sky rocket when we would pass another dog on the street because I knew a barking fit would ensue. Now our lil guy goes everywhere with us without issue. We get to enjoy so much more time with our pup and cannot thank Holiday Barn enough! read more

So far my experience has been really good and I've only been booking a 1 week stay with extras. I will update this review after we stay but we stopped in for a tour. It was super easy. Considering the amenities I think the pricing is fair or slightly above average. We are going to do a week of boarding and training sessions for our two dogs so I will update afterward when all goes well! I contacted the reservation specialist with a copy of my vaccinations and she let me know what was out of date. I can get my dogs vaccinated before our visit and still be within their rules. read more

My daughter's and my dogs (5 total) were boarded here two weeks ago. All are fully vaccinated but all five came home with kennel cough resulting in one being rushed to critical care. They told me while dropping off my dog for a week boarding stay that she wasn't able to board because her vaccine was out of date 3 days prior. I talked to them on the phone the week before to make sure everything was scheduled and good to go and they never mentioned her coming up on a vaccine. We boarded here at the new location recently, but have boarded at the old location several times. Although the old location was pricey, we had been happy with the service and were willing to pay. But I was very disappointed with the new location. The check-in and check-out counters are grocery store style, very impersonal when we are trusting you with our fur baby. The whole complex is much bigger, when we came to pickup it took too long for them to locate and bring up our dog. But mostly we were upset when she needed to go so badly that when she had her next bowel movement, she bled a little. She is extremely fastidious about not pooping inside; I had warned them and paid extra for VIP walks to be sure she could go routinely. But on the last day she had a bath and evidently was not given an opportunity to go. The higher prices here for boarding did not mean higher level of service. read more

DO NOT COUNT ON FRIENDLY CUSTOMER SERVICE AT THIS LOCATION. DO NOT BOOK WITH HOLIDAY BARN PET RESORT PERIOD. I made a reservation for dog boarding over the phone with the Midlothian location a week in advance of bringing my dog. After spending nearly 15 minutes on the phone with someone who took down all my information, she asked if I would rather be at the Mountain Rd. location. I said yes, since that is nearer to my current apartment. At the end of the call, she asked for my veterinarian's name and said that I should be "good to go." I asked her at least twice if I needed to follow up on this appointment, and she said that no, they would obtain my veterinary records, and no, they had taken care of everything. Come the day I bring my dog to be dropped off, I went to the Mountain Road location. The man at the counter looked in the records and said that there were no records of myself OR my dog in their system. Plus, he said that they would be unable to take my dog because they didn't have his veterinary records. I was quite irritated at this point, as it was a Sunday night and my vet wasn't open nor the other kennel he had stayed at in Leesburg, which had his records. The man kept saying he couldn't help us, and honestly I am quite positive he didn't believe that I had made the appointment. He called over to the Midlothian location and said they didn't have our records either. After about ten minutes of this bull****, my record "magically" appeared. Yet, they still couldn't take him because of the lack of vet records. My partner and I were quite stressed at this point, as we were going on a train to move him up to New York the following morning at 6 am. When all this happened, it was 5:00PM the night before. Luckily, we were able to find a friend last minute to watch our dog. Overall, I give this entire company and operation a single star. 1) There is a lack of empathy from the Glen Allen location. This man could have handled our situation a bit better, or not have acted like he did not believe us. We were already stressed out at this point, and I would have had to cancel my $200 train ticket for this situation. He didn't even BOTHER to apologize after finding the record of our contact information. 2) The whole situation is ludicrous. I set up this appointment a WEEK in advance. The lady tried to upsell me on a suite, which I kindly denied. She also stated at least twice that everything "should be good to go" and that I would just need to drop off my dog before 6pm on a Sunday. She NEVER made any mention that I would need to bring copies of my vet records -- she stated that they would take care of that. Overall, the way this place is run seems disorganized and a rip-off. I have had my dog stay at plenty of kennels and boarding places that are much better, more organized, and less of a nightmare of an experience. Thanks for nothing. read more

Not as promised. When I made my reservation and dropped off my pet I was very clear about two specific requests. 1. She needed to wear the flexible cone we dropped her off with because she licks a raw spot on her paw when she is nervous 2. I also paid for her to have 2 fetch sessions each day she is there as that is her favorite activity (as opposed to walks or play time with other dogs) The facility appeared clean and the staff professional. There are many silly add-ons etc. I got a report touting "she had dreams of sugar plums" HOWEVER the most important parts of her care were overlooked. She did not wear the cone and now needs to go to the vet for an infected paw. She did not play fetch once (other activities like "exploring" were listed on her "report card" instead). All the extra amenities seem nice but noT when basic care instructions are ignored. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED read more

We are a frequent client of Holiday Barn and recommend their services. Our Wheaten Terrier gets so excited when we pull up. They are a full-service facility with boarding, daycare, training and grooming. They care about their service delivery. For example- our dog spent the night this past Saturday and was groomed. The groomer called to ensure she had a clear understanding of how we would like him trimmed. We always receive a report of his visit. However, there is no better review than a wagging tail when you pull into the parking lot! read more

I would never recommend anyone to come to this place to watch over your animals. I recently had my pet stay there for a 10 days. When i came to pick him up it was obvious he lost a lot of weight because when we bent down this collar fell off his neck. The staff said my pet had been eating this week but the vet said he clearly had not been. He ended up passing away two days after staying here. Not that this place caused him to pass away but they never notified us because how he was doing and they never gave us a report card like they say they do. If they were the professionals with working with animals they should have seen that the animal who was limping and clearly lost weight and notified the family. Would not recommended leaving your loved one here if you care about them. read more

This new place is the most awesome looking place. I had no clue it was back there. The old one was small and really run down (I worked there in high school) but this new spot is fab. My sister and bro in law are on vacay and we were in a pinch b/c their dogs kept breaking out of the fencing at the in laws home where they were being cared for so we had to find a boarding place QUICK. I was enlisted to grab the dogs and board them and man this place was huge, clean and looked super nice. I bet they are going to have a blast! Staff was great, helpful, nice and very polite. I would highly rec. b/c these two dogs are a huge pain in the butt and if they can take care of them there god love them :) read more

We take our 2 year old Schnauzer/Lab mix here for day camp about once a week and have been doing so for the past year. It is pricey and sometimes the front staff can be a little hard to read (perhaps more training on welcoming and directing customers) but she comes home tired and happy and I never have a worry about something happening when shes in their care! They give us a cute little report card each visit that helps us to feel connected and involved and it shares who her "friends" were that day. She doesn't come home with bad habits, no injuries and no health issues. I wish we could afford to take her more! read more

The staff is mostly attractive young females who are waiting for you to come in. You give them basic info if your a established client. Your credit card info is next in line. I stated above they nickel and dime you. Yes they do. I'm surprised they don't charge cleaning up dog poopie by the pile. If you want playtime... Extra. A walk?... Extra. A snack from their supply? Yep! .... Extra. I take my dog to a place out near 288 and Midlothian called BROUGHTON KENNELS. 15 bucks a night. I will never will go back to Hiliday Barn. Way to much money. Oh... If you want your dog to go to "Doggie Day Camp", be prepared to shell out even more. I think I would send my pooch to the Holiday INN, not BARN for that price. You could probably afford a steak from room service. BTW, asked them after my last visit if they had heard of YELP. They stated they sure have! I want to know why they never comment back to us. I just got off the phone trying to decipher Holiday Barns pricing scheme! I have to dogs so if I want to board them it is $54 per night, then if I want them to play with other dogs in the day care, it is an additional $64, then if I want my PWD's to go for a swim it is $24 a total of $142 per day! Are you kidding me! You can get all of that at Wingmont for a total of $48 for two dogs per day in a beautiful setting. I moved here from Laguna Beach Ca, one of the most expensive places to live in US and I boarded at a place called the Dog Ranch that was $98 for two dogs and they get everything that they are offering at Holiday Barn! This place is completely full of dog crap over their pricing scheme! read more

I have used the southside Holiday Barn for boarding in the past but have been using them for more than 20 years for grooming. My current dog is now 15 years old and getting crankier as he gets older. The newest groomer, Erin, is absolutely wonderful! She is patient with him as an older dog and takes great care of him, including calling me to follow up. Her love for animals is obvious. Though my dog is now 15, I never worry when I take him in for grooming because I know Erin will take special care of him. This is very important to me! read more

This was the second time I brought my dog here. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. The first time she came back skin and bones and they did not feed her correctly even after going over the food instructions. The second time we made sure they understood the food but she came back still skinny. They also DO NOT communicate the charges with you and charge you for things that they never discussed with you. And will make excuses and not give you your money back. I will NEVER take my dog back here and DO NOT recommend you taking your dogs here. read more

My husband forgot to call our usual boarding company right before Thanksgiving and we were forced to come here. My husband took the tour of their "new" facility. While it was huge, it was filled with many cages that the dogs sat in until they were given their 15 minutes of play time that cost us an extra $15. That is ridiculous. Our dog doesn't go to the bathroom on a walk and their high school age employees did not care about our suggestions. We have been told by many that the "15" minute of play time is just a smoke break by the employees. The cost of boarding is outrageous on top of all the extra charges for any interacting with our pup. Will never recommend this company to anyone. read more

I took my pup there recently and for the $$$$ they charge my total experience should have been amazing! He's a 5 month old Standard poodle. He only stayed 1 night. When I picked him up one of the girls went to get him as she brought him over to me and the other girl (who was taking my money) I heard the girl taking my money say"ewe he peed on me" and she was looking at me like??? I don't know because he only dribbled a couple drops on the floor, he looked scared! He's 100% potty trained, it's not like he cocked his leg on her??? I don't get it??? He's a puppy, she works at a kennel but she seemed mad at me. Meanwhile I am mad because why is my puppy freaked out. He didn't act normal until the next day. Thankfully he only stayed 1 night! Never again. I was considering multiple services if I and more importantly my pup were happy. They need to get it together! Hire hard core workers that can handle animals and be honest. My dog will be going to a farm kennel next time. Broughtons kennels. Working with animals is hard work! I know I've worked in this field. The folks at Broughtons are farmers and wouldn't have batted a eye at a couple drops of puppy pee!!! Which the girl never cleaned up! Holiday Barn Midlothian has an amazing campus. I have never experienced problems at check in, but check out can take half hour plus. Manager strolls through and doesn't offer any help even though she sees 6+ clients waiting for their dogs. It also can be pricey as everything is a la carte (i.e. $12 for 20 minutes of pool time). Still, dog comes home happy and tired from day care. Have used training here also with good results. Rating is due to groomers. Beware of groomers!! They are lazy and only want to shave the dog down. Everything is extra, and you get attitude from groomers. I suggest you take dogs elsewhere. We've tried to use these folks more than once for grooming with disastrous results. read more

This is a wonderful facility. Always spotless, well informed personnel, friendly, courteous and great with the animals. Similar to their Glen Alan location which I used a lot when my boy was young, but much newer. Would take advantage of all they offer but my dog has leg issues that prevent him from playing with other dogs (he did up to the age of 2), and he's also not a fan of swimming (they tried but he prefers pool side). BUT, Holiday Barn offers additional playtime/walks as an added option. And that is the best thing possible. Also, the report cards are 'cute'. Of course there is never anything negative on them but it's nice to have. The grooming services are great as well. Every experience I have had has been positive and while now it is not much, it used to be quite a bit. My opinion -- and I am quite persnickety when it comes to my boy, this is the best facility in the area. read more
