But it was clean, had fantastic customer service and was 50 feet from the ocean. We stayed ocean side room 525 and we couldn't have been happier. The beds and pillows were comfortable too. The hotel's location was great. The rooms are no frills, but they are relatively clean. I'm mainly writing this because I was so disappointed by the unprofessional behavior of the continental breakfast attendant this morning. The continental breakfast runs until 9:30, and my group came down about 9am. There looked to be one attendant there, although she just hung out on her phone in the kitchen talking with either the chef or the dishwasher. She never really emerged from the room the whole time and was just carrying on a personal conversation the whole time. I know this because the door was open and she was standing in the door frame. When we arrived, the fresh oatmeal had been empty for some time, and guests were scraping the bottom of the serving container. When my dad asked when they were going to bring more out, the girl chuckled and said "I don't know." She then asked the chef who said "that's all we have." Got the vibes that they just didn't wanna do their job and make more since breakfast was closing in 30 minutes. Fast forward 5 minutes. The coffee has now run out. My dad has to go find her in the little dishwashing room. He asked if they were going to make more coffee and she says she's making more. Then turns back, rolls her eyes, and -- I kid you not -- asks the little chef/dishwasher guy, "WHY IS EVERYONE BEING SUCH BUTTHEADS TODA?Y" I cannot believe Holiday Inn would employ someone with this attitude and lack of work ethic in a customer-facing role. I don't know her name, because she wasn't wearing a name tag. But if Holiday Inn reads this and cares, this occurred on April 24th, at around 9:00am. The "attendant" was a black girl about 5'8" with a bleached portion of hair on the rear left side. read more

This hotel will do for a few short days at the outer banks. It is definitely not anything fancy. You really want the fifth floor if you want to see the ocean because the dune between the hotel and the coast is telling you the rooms are adequate and include a small fig, microwave and safe. Nothing fancy. The bathroom is like a sardine can and is super small. You pretty much have to wedge yourself between the commode and sink to close the door. The included hotel breakfast is okay. Hotel is just...ok. You pay a lot for an oceanfront room and in my opinion, the room and view are underwhelming. The biggest disappointment I had was going to sit on the balcony to enjoy a beer and look out at the ocean and as I sit down, the thick railing of the deck covers my view completely. So the deck is useless for a view unless you're literally standing. Please see my pictures for this. Also, the view is half parking lot/hotel as well as the ocean. Even if you are lucky enough to get a higher floor to see past the dunes. It's a little off putting. Regarding the room, the bathroom is fine but on the smaller side. The TV channels are very basic with no guide. The AC is SLIGHTLY on the louder side if that bothers you. To keep this short and sweet, just find somewhere else to stay by the ocean. As I live in Fort Lauderdale where we have beautiful beaches and warm waters year around, I fear I'm rather spoiled as I didn't find the ocean beaches around Nags Head or at this, the Holiday Inn Express Nags Head Oceanfront, to be very impressive. Though the hotel has four acres of pristine beach front, the water for me, was rather cold with nothing but ocean and sand to look at. While here I didn't see any boaters, beach volley ball players or much activity at all. All along Nags Head there is a big sand bank along the beach which blocks ocean views and with the hotel you have to leave from what is the second floor taking a walkway to get across the big sand bank then climb down a series of stairs to the beach. So it wasn't much of a surprise to see that most of the guests were using the hotel's indoor heated pool rather than going to the beach. The Hotel seems to be meant for vacationers and being on the beach, it's rather made for wet swimming suits and sand which causes a constant cleaning problem with the flooring. The place is loaded with kids which some may find nice but for me, annoying. The rooms, however, are of decent size with OK basic appointments. As a tip, if you stay here, get a room facing the ocean on the top floor. From a top floor vantage point you'll have a view of more than the lower floors view of the parking lot or the front rooms that only have a highway to look at. read more

The view from the room was fabulous ... sand dunes, a walkway and a peek at gorgeous waves rolling in. The beds were comfortable, the linens plentiful and the pillows were even marked so you'd know which ones were hard or soft at a glance. Breakfast was amazing! There were far more choices than usually provided with a 'free' breakfast. I enjoyed scrambled eggs, sausage links, biscuits and gravy ... and a cinnamon roll that was warm, sweet and bursting with cinnamon flavor. I had orange juice and milk ... but there were other drink choices as well. There were also omelets, grits, oatmeal (with toppings like walnuts & raisins), cold cereal, toast and a machine that made mini pancakes on the spot. The beach was awesome! The views were simply gorgeous. Huge waves were rolling in. Sea birds were flying overhead ... and wandering on the sand at the water's edge. One guy was surfing, while a few people played in the waves and a handful of others sat or stood on the beach. Would I stay again? Definitely. read more

Nags Head is the ideal location to stay if you are going to be visiting several villages/towns throughout the Outer Banks. It is a short drive from Duck, Corolla, Roanoke, Manteo, Rodanthe & Cape Hatteras. The Nags Head Inn was a great hotel! It is a casual hotel that is run very efficiently. I cannot stress how clean and organized the entire building is. I was extremely pleased about this. The ocean is only a few steps away from the hotel. The view from the balconies is beautiful! You can watch the sun rise and set over the ocean right from your room! We stayed on the fifth floor, which definitely had the nicest view! The hotel rooms had some nice accommodations, the best being the flat screen TV with about 500 channels available through DirecTV. The rooms also have a coffee maker, refrigerator and iron. The beds were comfortable and clean. The beds were comfortable, but a tad smaller than average. The hotel has a daily breakfast setup that serves juice, coffee, packaged pastries and freshly made sweet potato biscuits. Breakfast is served on the second floor. It's not a very good breakfast selection, but it is convenient if you want to grab a snack on-the-go. The staff couldn't be friendlier. This hotel was awesome for a quick weekend trip. The lady at check in was very organized and polite. She had all of the guests reservations printed out and ready for signatures upon arrival. My room was on the fourth floor facing the ocean. The room was nice and clean. There was a microwave, mini fridge, Keurig coffee maker, and balcony. The view from the room was great, perfect for watching the sun rise. The hotels breakfast consisted of muffins, toast, pancakes, eggs, sausage, and cereal. Visiting this weekend - great experience. Of course, this is off-season so our interactions may differ from the summer crowd. We were on the 5th floor facing the ocean. Great view - you can see the sunrise - but probably only 3rd floor and higher. The beach is literally 50' front the lobby - as advertised! The free breakfast was awesome! Several meat, omelette, fruit, and cereal choices. I was stuffed after each meal. Room was clean, really happy that the refrigerator had a separate freezer. Safe worked. Bathroom was small but clean. Pros: Proximity to beach is unbeatable Beach directly behind hotel was always uncrowded Shower rinse adjacent to hotel lobby was helpful Parking plentiful and easy Rooms very clean, we found the bathroom to be modern. Room fridge was slightly larger than typical hotel room fridges. Easily Walkable to Food Lion and Duck Donuts if you cross the highway at designated cross walk , also a bike rental place is 5 min walk right on Virginia Dare. Cons: No recycling anywhere on hotel premises Breakfast hours are 6:30-9:30am each day. Suggest 7-10am at minimum for weekends Suggest iced water dispenser be available at all times in lobby--it's hot! Many other hotels do this year round and it is a basic hospitality staple. Fruit bowl would also be a small step to create welcoming atmosphere. Roadside rooms, unlike beach facing rooms, sliding glass door does not open. This is definitely an older hotel that they have tried to modernize.. A bit. Overall it is very LaQuinta Inns "like" with basic hotel amenities, somewhat comfortable bed, and pretty clean. The breakfast is in dire need of an upgrade, with only prepackaged danishes, juice vending machine, and sub par coffee. They do boast about sweet potato biscuits, which must have been the little sandwich things in the ziploc bags on the counter. This was a surprise visit to Nags Head to me from my BF, so I am not sure what the cost was. Because of the AMAZING ocean view, and OK overall hotel, I was more than willing to stay. I'm just telling myself that at the most he did not pay more than $100 a night so I can be comfortable with the overall scenario. If that is the case, I would be ok with returning... I spent a few nights here this early October and I don't have a complaint - actually check that, one small beef but it's more of annoyance than anything - they checked me into the disabled suite. I don't like this because 1. I'm not disabled and it could be put to better use for someone who might be. 2. I prefer the normal bathroom set up in a regular room. That's just me - it's a peeve because I travel alone alot and many times hotels do this. I encourage hotels to stop doing this. That said - the rooms are immaculate, very new furniture and television. The beds are extremely comfortable. Maid service was excellent. Public areas in the hotel appeared clean and well maintained. There is a small indoor pool on the 2nd floor. Beach access is easy and very nice. They also have an outdoor shower stall with tile, next to the parking lot that can be used to rinse off yourself, beach gear, etc. Very cool. I especially liked the large TVs, the viewing distance to size was excellent. Rooms have safes and Keurig machines with 8 or so K cups for use. Guest Laundry was really nice - and FREE to use. Irons and ironing boards provided in the rooms. Staff was friendly and very helpful. Small pantry at the front desk with laundry materials, snacks, and drinks. I would stay here again, I would also recommend this hotel to friends, family, colleagues. Only other minor gripe is the many Harley motorcycles that go by on Hwy 12 and can be annoying or wake you up at times. read more

Terrible customer service from both the front desk and the support staff online. We drove 10 hours from GA on our anniversary to come to an un welcoming hotel which we had booked 2 months in advance! We are Diamond elite members and got no benefit being so. We asked for an ocean facing room, which is supposed to be given if available. The front desk said it wasn't available. I checked online and it was. To add Insult to injury while we were waiting 4 couples checked in and 2 got ocean facing. We then asked them to cancel or modify our reservation which the front desk couldn't do and not could the corporate figure out how to do. They kept tossing me like a shuttle cock from one to the other for 1.5 hours. Just ridiculous. We asked them to refund our stay and we would go late in the night to another hotel. We booked for the rest of the vacation at the Ramada after finally cancelling the rest of our stay. The hotel DOES NOT mention that they have 2 floors under renovation. And the rude check in staff day we are a Government hotel. I asked her if the Government owned them! She than said Government folk stay here And will walk in any minute. Lol. She also said every second person here is diamond status Really. Such low hanging fruit? We have diamond status at Marriott and Hilton as well. Never such bad service. Don't think corporate was keen to do anything. And we even mentioned that it was our wedding anniversary. Service industry and no clue how to provide customer service. read more

It was our first time in Nags Head and our first time at this hotel (me, wife, and 2 kids). Although very small, the hotel entrance/lobby and other ground level areas are efficient and smart. It is very nicely renovated and clean. Let me stress clean here. With all the guest traffic, tracking sand/water in and out of this small area with only two elevators, this place was REMARKABLE clean at all times!!! Plus, the two lobby desks were equipped with glass shields separating you from employees. They always wore masks and provided hand sanitizer at all times. Also, the front desks clerks were WONDERFUL!!! So nice and polite! As for other ground level features, they had snacks, cold drinks, very clean renovated bathrooms, and hot complementary coffee at ALL times. They also had a very convenient shower area for rinsing off sand from the beach before returning to the hotel elevator. I can't stress enough how impressed I was with their great management and smart usage of such a small area. Next, the beach access was perfect. They had a nicely-constructed wooden staircase built over the natural dune and an easy walk down to the beach area. The beach was always clean. If you want to rent chairs and umbrellas, there is a company (Go Dog Go) that has them already set up for you every day. Very convenient and reasonably-priced (about $40 for the entire day for 2-3 chairs and an umbrella; cash only). You just take them and they'll find you for payment. The beach was very spacious - hotel patrons only and the adjacent areas were private, as well. No public access issues. If you needed to get drinks or snacks or use the bathroom while on the beach, the hotel first floor was very close and well-equipped to accommodate. Now for the accommodations...common areas were renovated and clean. Room was nicely renovated. Again, very clean, too! No problems at all with smell. The bathroom was spotless. Two nice queen beds. It also had a small but efficient kitchenette with fridge and microwave, and both worked fine. They also had a very small but nice balcony area. If you want to see the beach/ocean easily (sunrise is BEAUTIFUL), you must be on the 4th or 5th (top) floor. We were on the 4th floor and could see everything. Maid service was perfect for covid era! Just put dirty linens and towels in a basket outside door, as well as a written request for any toiletries. They return fresh and clean! Nobody comes in your room. The only potential problem with the room was the AC. I personally liked it because, a) it worked very well, and b) it was an individual unit that pulled in outside, ocean-side fresh air. This was not a central AC system that potentially had more covid risks from circulation shared with the whole hotel. You had your own private system. The problem? It was noisy, especially if your setting was such that it turned off/on all night. Next...the pool. It was very small, but again very clean and appeared well maintained. We didn't actually use it, so I can't say much, but it seemed fine for little kids. It has skylights and places for adults to sit and supervise. Next...food. There is no restaurant at this hotel. So, that is one drawback, as you will have to walk or ride a mile or so to get something from a restaurant. Other than snacks and drinks in the lobby, they do have a sizable cafe on the second floor. However, I believe it is for breakfast only. Nevertheless, let me say I was IMPRESSED!!! This is all free, and they really stocked up and made it very easy in the covid era. I basically went shopping for the whole family each morning and then took everything back to the room (EVERYTHING packaged): fresh fruit (not sliced but whole) - bananas, apples and oranges, egg/cheese/sausage biscuits, gluten-free bagels, muffins, yogurt, cereal, milk, orange juice, apple juice, coffee...it was really well done. They had plastic bags to carry everything back to your room. Again, very organized and clean. They did an excellent job! Next...location. It is pretty far down the OBX corridor, almost near the end of the tourist-y strip as we know it. It is south Nags Head. It has both the beach strip with the houses, as well as several areas for shopping and dining. It has PLENTY of really good family-owned restaurants to choose from. We really liked Blue Moon Beach Grill and Dirty Dicks Crab House. Also, THE BEST PIZZA I've ever eaten anywhere was at Village Pizza. These are all in Nags Head. It also has plenty of specialty shops. The parking is very convenient. You drive in under a covered area, which makes it very convenient if it is raining. You can unload right at the lobby entrance and they'll give you a parking pass. Overall, this hotel was managed as well or better than any hotel I've ever used. I'd stay here instead of many poorly-managed, overpriced 5-star hotels that rely on curb appeal to sell. Effort counts, and this hotel has it. read more

We just stayed at this hotel From June 16th - 19th and the beach was under construction the whole time. Management took off 20% for one evening. We showed them our towels that were supposed to be new clean towels they looked like someone had literally cleaned there car with them. Taken to the front desk they said that service was contracted out and wasn't their fault. We got towels like this two days in a row. The beds had no mattress covers so good luck with that. The beach will be under construction for the next year and management is terrible. The breakfast area is located on the second floor and extremely small and not payed out well. Everyone was tripping over each other and the breakfast food and serving areas were constantly out of food. Do not stay here! read more

It had been over 30 years since I last visited the Outer Banks. Thanks to my stay at Nags Head Inn, it felt like a real homecoming. I didnt remember there being too many options to stay in a nice beachfront hotel, but Nags Head Inn fits the bill very nicely! Its a bit of a hike from the Va. Beach, Tidewater area, but if you are truly into the beach and like being around friendly fellow beach aficionados, I highly recommend Nags Head and fully recommend the Nags Head Inn, for a family outing or a couples getaway. My boyfriend and I stayed here in March (off-season) for a long weekend getaway. This place is right on the ocean and our balcony had a great view; so close we could taste the spray of salt-water. The room was clean, with a large king bed. There is an indoor pool and jacuzzi, which was a great feature. The staff was friendly and there was always a staff member around if we needed anything. I would definitely recommend this place, especially in the off-season because they gave us a great rate. We Stayed here on Memorial Day weekend. Totally loved it here. The room was super clean (and I'm pretty obssesed with cleanliness) but it was just perfect. The bed- no lie- was the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in (even better than our own at home..we joked about strapping it to the roof and taking it home lol) our room was a street side with king size bed, it had a nice flat screen tv and at 250.00 a night for a holiday weekend we could not complain. Totally worth it. The front desk was very nice and even saved us 80.00 on our stay because she asked if we had AAA. They even gave us a coupon for a free night stay upon checkout. Only thing I noticed is the lack of security cameras? I don't know maybe being from the Atlantic city area I'm accustomed to seeing that..lol regardless I doubt there's much to worry about around there! Great view, nice rooms, fantastic Beach access. Balcony is tiny. Stairs coming of of the beach were almost nonexistent because of the sand buildup on them. There is s parking spot at the bottom of the steps with a concrete stopper and I tripped over this and busted my knee. It is not painted white or yellow so you can't see it. Hotel desk seemed unconserved however after 30 minutes managed to find a gauze. Breakfast is nonexistent. I would visit here again however they will get sued over that step issue when someone bust their head open. read more

A year after my last review and Holiday Inn Express Nags Head is exactly as remembered. The staff is still friendly and pleasant and the rooms are clean. They also still give the Bath and Bodyworks shampoo, conditioner and lotion that I adore o so much. The only (minor) thing this time around was day 2 the housekeeper came to clean (they clean every day!) but failed to restock the toilet paper. Being that we will be here another 3 days that is rather important but nothing that wasn't remedied by a quick trip to the lobby. While the breakfast is good, I do wish there was some variety from morning to morning. Perhaps bacon one day, sausage the next because most of us who come for vacay will stay at least 3 nights and I for one don't like eating the same thing. Well, except biscuits and gravy. I don't think I could ever tire of that. For those of us with bad backs or other injuries, the ramp to the beach comes as quite useful. Just a short walk and you have arrived! I also (still) enjoy the free laundry facility. I wish there was more than one washer/dryer because I spent 4 hours trying to get two loads of laundry clean while several other guests came in asking about its avilability. With it being so impromptu, literally packing a bag and hitting the road, I did not book a room anywhere. Long story short, after reading reviews we ended up here. While the room could use some remodeling, paint chipping off the ceiling and wear and tear, I would stay here again. It was a clean hotel with comfortable rooms. The pool was also nice and our 5 year old daughter was able to enjoy it. Free breakfast in the morning from 6:30am to 9:30am. There were no extra charges for wifi, and customer service was top notch. The price was very affordable as well. read more

Clean, spacious, friendly, and very affordable. It is right on the beach and near stores and restaurants. We had a street side room and it was still fairly quiet. Because we stayed for more than 4 nights, we got one night free which brought our cost down significantly ($633 Mon-Sat). The biscuits and coffee were fine for a day or two but since there are microwaves and refrigerators in the rooms, we kept breakfast food on hand and ate out most other meals. read more

On the plus side, this place is affordable and right on the beach. On the minus side, our room had a pronounced, unshakable briney smell, and the post-beach rinse-off facilities are, well, they're kinda gross. The sweet potato biscuits from a local bakery sound a lot better than they taste, and the coffee...let's not even talk about the coffee, just do yourself a favor and go up the road to Front Porch. I would probably stay here again for a night or two, all things considered, but I'm not hustling back. read more
