bought my friend here for her retirement we had a nice time. We got there around happy hour which was cool and self serving, so you had to go to the bar to get your drinks which was fine. Drinks were between 5 and 8 bucks. Margaritas were tasty, nachos really good. Eventually a server came and would clean the table and replenish drinks. We stopped in before the Motley Crue concert at Barclays (obviously) and I will say I was super pleased with the entire experience. It had the feel of a cool, rock bar, but wasn't grimy and the food was great. The jalapeno poppers were the clear winners (they are like giant fried balls filled with cheese and spice deliciousness). We got nachos, which were also great. The beer selection was on point, servers were all cool and easy and attentive. It wasn't mobbed, but had it not been raining I would have loved to sit outback. A fun no frills kind of bar; great for catching up with a friend. Very low key vibe. The black bean burger is worth a try! Above all, it's the patrons that make this place enjoyable in general. A variety of different people seem to frequent this place and most are easy to strike up a conversation with. On a quiet Tuesday evening my friend and I decided to grab a bite to eat at Hollow Nickel. We walk in the door take a look around waiting to be greeted and seated. After a few seconds we assumed customer's seat themselves. So we chose a table and waited. Approximately 5 minutes after seating ourselves a staff member from the kitchen brought food out to the table across from us. We greeted him in hopes of at least a greeting in return. Our greeting from him was "you order at the bar" and he walks away! We brushed it off made our final decisions and ordered at the bar. The bartender hands me our soft drinks and a table number. I bring our drinks and table number to our table. A bit later we received our food without utensils and napkins. We had the chicken quesadilla and a burger so we attempted to enjoy our food without making too much of a mess on our faces. Not once were we asked if everything was ok or if we needed anything else. We then came to the conclusion that this is a restaurant/bar without wait staff. We received our bill of $31 and split it down the middle $15.50 each. To my surprise I checked my bank account and had a charge of $17.50 from Hollow Nickel. I gave them a call once they opened. A manager by the name of Kane was pleasant and helpful. He sent me a picture of my receipt showing someone changed my total to 17.50! They also changed my friend's receipt to reflect the same. It's really unfortunate to have this happen. It is only $2 but it's in no way professional or acceptable to change a customer's receipt. I go in to get my money back and I receive a nonchalant apology from another manager (I assume). From that apology it seems like this is a customary act from their establishment. Stealing shouldn't be taken lightly!! read more

Another place that serves the neighborhood well. The food here is great, I'd come for it even without the bar. Burger, fries, and fried pickles are really good - most things come with awesome chipotle mayo. I really like the quesadillas too. Their happy hour could be better, but no real complaints from me. I always have a good time here, so hey 4 stars. It's just a regular slightly-divey bar with tasty tex-mex bar food. The only vegetables I recall are potatoes (fried) and jalapenos (on nachos and in the fantastic jalapeno poppers). Everything we ordered was fried or covered in processed cheese or both, tho there probably are more wholesome things on the menu if you are in that mood. What a great spot that a friend of mine took me to after brunch down the street from here. It has a decent sized backyard with large tables and plenty of seating to fill up with friends, and enjoy the outdoor weather after such an intensely awful winter. The interior is cozy, and the bartender (a cute auburn guy with a beard) who made the most fantastic White Russians that I ever had (and yes, he made them the right way! Layered, not mixed!). First time in Brooklyn, stumbled in at 1 am on a Sunday night after a long flight from Seattle. The kitchen was closed but they served us some of the best guacamole I've had in a long time. The bartender gave us some recommendations for dinner while we were in town, including Rucola, which was as promised, AMAZING. Drinks were excellent, as was the conversation. This place has great prices, and a chill atmosphere. I went on a Saturday evening and it wasn't too crowded. There is a patio but it was really hot so we didn't go out there. A lot of people have complained about the kitchen, but I didn't have a problem at all. I ordered a BLT and my boyfriend ordered a chicken quesadilla, and they both came out correctly and quickly. The drink specials can't be beat. I got a $5 margarita, which was quite strong, and my boyfriend got a Narragansett and a shot of well whiskey for $6. This place rocks!!!! Bartenders are super friendly and the prices are amazing!!! $5 for a well whiskey (which is Evan Williams and old overhault) and the food is really good!!! I had a burger that was cooked perfectly. Didn't feel bloated after eating a burger and fries. This has become one of my favorite bars of all time! I have been there plenty of times for afterwork get togethers, friends birthday parties and even just by myself to hang out. The owners are super friendly and accommodating, the bartenders are really sweet and are super willing to adjust recipes for drinks(which i always need) and they have an amazing backyard! I've been here with one of my friends that owns another bar in the neighborhood and even he agrees, this is his favorite new place to hang out after work!
