This is the best hair salon I have ever been to. I have black hair, and Larry & Elisa took me to a beautiful blonde, while maintaining the health of my hair. I had tried other prestigious salons before (Rita Hazan, Oscar Blondi, and Cutler) and had ended up with damaged and orange hair. Larry spent hours with me, and gave me a gorgeous blonde color that looks melted and beautiful. He also restored the health of my hair. Elisa gives NYC's absolute best blowouts. I couldn't be happier. Even throughout this quarantine, my roots are growing out and looking fantastic, only more credit to Larry's ability to keep a beautiful head of hair with low maintenance. Very posh yet relaxed and great well designed salon. Not amazing for the price. My consultation involved me showing a bunch of pictures to Victoria, her nodding and telling me it will be easy and my hair just needs to be lighter(took 2min, which is fine). The service I got involved two rounds of bleaching and toning. I wanted a light dusty rose pink-ish color and got cool blonde instead. Very pretty cool blonde but definitely not what I asked for. I was at the salon for over 5 hrs with my hair in the bowl for an hour so I just wanted to be done and it was pretty so I didn't complain(to be fair, it looked good at the time except that it wasn't what I asked for). I felt a lot of harsh brushing and felt that my hair was being handled very roughly when toning and shampooing. I could feel my hair breaking and when I got home, realized that the whole left side of my head have unevenly broke(section Victoria started bleaching first). I don't think it was Victoria's fault but more her assistant. I asked him a few times if he could be gentler on my hair and gave up after 4th time. After a few days, I realized that some parts of the hair wasn't bleached evenly and I had hot roots (I asked not to bleach my roots but it was still lighter closer to the roots) and orange band in the upper middle part and then lighter ends. Also the approx quote I got was about 500 but ended up being over 800(including tip, it was close to 1000). I did NOT expect it to be that much. I believe in paying for whatever great service I get and I get that the original quote was just approximate but the service I got and the result of the service did not match the money I paid. I do think the salon itself was very cool and some peoole would have a great experience but I will not go back or recommend it. read more

I had a solid 5-star experience after the co-owner, Victoria, offered to do my hair after I had a not-so-pleasant experience with two other colorists. Although Charlie and Christina were pretentious and rude with their advice, way of communicating, (and orders), I kept it at a 4 because the ambiance definitely brought it to a more pleasant experience, and Victoria wanted to make the situation better. The decor and location and feeling of the salon is awesome! Much less fast-paced compared to midtown salons (much calmer than Oscar Blandi), and less uptight (apart from Csquared) compared to uptown salons. I recommend you go straight to L. Raspanti (who, as I observed, was pleasant to be around and smiled at everyone) or Victoria (who had great advice and did amazing with my hair). The price difference for partial highlights was only about $60 or $70 but for better service and an area in the back for what seemed as Victoria's "section".. it's worth it. The owners know what they're doing about service. The other two, not so much.. but who knows.. they did seem to have solid clientele so try them yourself--- but if they don't smile more ethan twice, don't say I didn't yelp-so! Other folks liked their experience, and because the salon is so awesome (the feeling of an old Notting Hill bookstore in England meeting a chic antique shop in Marseille.. plus all the hair products haha). I also had a haircut a few months back. While I don't do coloring (once every three years!), I do cut my hair frequently. I just stayed basic with layers and as it has grown out, the dimensions of the layers are still awesome. She did follow directions with not going drastically short. So visit Reagan. My only regret is not tipping my last stylist (Jamie I believe) who helped Victoria after coloring. I do intend on mailing in a tip, but my sister was outside and I had to run! When I arrived to WH I was immediately at ease for two reasons - uber friendly gentleman who greeted me at the desk and not a foil in sight. I can't even begin to tell you the HELL I have put my hair through with box dyes and DIY color lifting kits in the past 6 months. Charlie is simply amazing. My corrected color is original, the condition is incredibly good considering all the bleaching that took place and I can not even begin to tell you the number of appreciative glances I received on my way home. She was assisted by Aubrey and the two of them made me a very happy gal. My only complaint? Not tipping more. Credit cards are accepted but bring cash for the tip - next time I know. read more

I love the vibe inside the salon - inviting yet modern. I don't love: (1) cash tips only, (2) some stylists wash your hair themselves but others hand you off to assistants which I really don't like. I had my hair cut by Reagan once - I liked it and she's so nice but she was overly liberal with product so my hair wasn't "run your fingers through silky." Much more like great to look at but don't touch. I also had my hair cut by Jaime (who left) - she walked off mid cut without explanation and handed off styling to an assistant with vague instructions. The cut was good but the styling was poor so I didn't feel like I got my money's worth ($140 plus tip plus tips for the shampoo boy and styling assistant). I've moved on to Fekkai in Soho with Jordi and I'm much more satisfied, get a way more luxe experience, better styling, and for the same price now. read more

I am incredibly disappointed with my experience here. Based upon a friend's recommendation and the good Yelp reviews, I decided to give Whittemore a chance. Raime cut my hair, which was very long and fairly blunt going in, so it was really a blank slate. I asked for long chunky layers. She immediately started in with a razor cut and I interrupted her because I hate razor cuts. Instead of chunky layers, they create wispy layers, which is the exact opposite of what I wanted. I told her that I don't like razor cuts and she insisted that she would just use the razor to "create movement" and that she'd end with scissors to give it more of a chunky look. I let her proceed since she is the expert hair stylist that gets $120 a cut, so I figured she must know more than I do about how to achieve a look. Plus, I voiced my concern... What else could I do? I wish she'd listened to me. Now, I have a razor cut, which is wispy and will be impossible to trim. She thinned out my hair, which again, is the opposite of the thick chunky look I was going for. read more

Très cher, and honestly out of my budget range... BUT, as my best friend noted, this was the *first* time I ever left a salon saying, "I love it!" I had colored my virgin hair red on a whim while out of town, and spent a month trying to fade the unnatural hue to an acceptable color, only to end up with hot roots and ends that resembled my original medium brown. Charlie colored my hair - medium coppery red with lighter red highlights - beautifully and naturally. I felt listened to, and guided in the best way. They included a gloss and a masque to moisturize my parched hair, and said I didn't have to highlight again until after 3-4 root touchups. Later, I was complimented by the flaming Starbucks guy who asked if he could touch my hair. Then shave it off. And wear it himself. 'nuff said. read more

I went in as a "model" and asked to have my roots painted - I didn't want a lot changed I just wanted my roots to be more blended. I received uneven highlights and bright orange hair. The owner told me to come back in two weeks and then the stylist Elisa completely ghosted me - told me I didn't have the appointment and that they forgot about me. When I asked if there was another time or day I could come in I was ignored with no reply. Luckily the model program is not as costly as their salon costs but all clients should be given the same respect and if there are mistakes they should be fixed instead of being forgotten about and ignored. Sorry, Whittemore, you've changed since the last time I came here ... or maybe I have. I had a 5:30 appointment and was out by 5:55. I know I have relatively "easy" hair, but seriously? For $150, that is $5 a minute! Second, my stylist, Ryan, seemed to know what he was doing BUT he was simultaneously working on three different people. It made me feel like I was being worked on by a hairstylist for a time-sensitive shoot or something ... not remotely relaxing. And while the assistant was fine, she tried to way upwell product (listen, lady, I've been writing about beauty since you were in middle school, so don't even try) and then tried these saccharinely sweet comments that just rubbed me the wrong way. (I'm pregnant, and when she realized this, she was like, "But you look like a baby. How can you be having a baby?" I get the "compliment," but I'm a 32-year-old grown-up and hate condescension (and may also be dealing with PG hormones) Bottom line: I felt like the last times I came here, they took their time and the stylist made you feel like you were their priority. Overall, I have observed the staff as being very caring about their work - these people have a hip, laid back vibe but they take great pride in doing even small jobs well. When they offered me water, they gave me a choice between citrus-infused or cucumber-infused. I get the sense that everyone works in harmony here and even the assistants are knowledgeable and pay attention to detail. The music is eclectic and the whole place is unpretentious and cool. Anna Teterina has done my color three times now. I have mousey brown hair, but she achieves very natural shades of red that really work for me and my skin tone. For each appointment Anna listens to my concerns and gives great feedback. She did a beautiful hair painting technique on my long, long hair. It was subtle and beautifully deliberate. Shes talented and has vision. I will be a regular client. Sarajane Lynch gave me a SERIOUS haircut - we took off about 12" or more. I had never met her before, but she was very thoughtful and listened to me. I got exactly what I wanted and am even happier about the cut than I expected to be. Sarajane also explained about the products she was using in an informational way - at no point did I feel pressured to buy salon products. But after such a dramatic cut, she was explaining to me how my hair care would change. I really appreciated her insight. For a single-process, gloss (this is included with your color treatment - amazing value!!), cut, and blowout with styling tools- I spent $303 (not including tips). Money well spent if you ask me. In order...my faves included... -super friendly greeting at the door- so rare these days... -my awesome stylist - Jamie - she instantly set me at ease- she didn't do a quick once over and move on- she really spent a lot of time talking to me about my hair, my style, my wants etc- I felt like she spent so much attention on me -drinks- they have a full bar. It was 19 degrees today and my hot toddy was perfection... -product- they use swedish products that are so light -my cut was flawless- my hair looks amazing- I was getting looks on the street on my way home! Haircut by Jamie was fabulous, perfect and meticulously cut, but the reason for my 2 stars is Christina (hair color) and if it solely was based on that and the service at the front, it'd be 1 star. We discussed slightly lightening the ends and pulling SOME color up to the top to cover up my lovely budding greys. As she painted I thought-wow, so much... I didn't see more done only at the bottom like I asked for, but didn't say anything, thinking that the "slight lightening" must be very slight and that it would turn out fabulous. As I waited for the color to process CHRISTINA WENT TO DYE HER OWN HAIR. After the color processed and I was washed by Christina's assistant because CHRISTINA WAS SITTING IN THE BACK READING A MAGAZINE WHILE HER OWN HAIR PROCESSED FROM HER DYE JOB. Jamie took me to dry and style my hair. I freaked out when I saw dark blonde streaks all over my hair and bangs. Jaime said to see what it's like when it's dry, but I could tell Jamie knew right away it wasn't what I asked for as she only dried my bangs and then stopped to get Christina. My natural hair color, dark brown, was streaked by very bright, almost blond highlights streaking my entire head-no graduation of color, and the highlights sat right on top, not under to prevent the streaking look (as I assumed any high end salon knows/does these days, especially when asked to only pull SOME highlights through to top, and darker than the ends). I might has well have had one of those old school caps with the hair poked through put on me. I had lines of blond streaking down my bangs and two big ones on either side of them, making me look like I had horns. Christina-still with dye in her hair, came over and agreed it was too much, and took me back to the hair washing chair to put dye in my bangs and part of the top half of my hair. My bang highlights came out the color I initially intended for the entire half of my head, but not I was left with nice in front, streaky mess in the back. AFTER CHRISTINA RE-DYED MY HAIR SHE NEVER CAME BACK TO CHECK ON IT OR MAKE SURE IT WAS OKAY. I was brought directly back to Jamie who dried and styled my hair... I didn't see the back of my hair until she was done and showed me. I was horrified, but after sitting in there for 4 hours, was exhausted, and I saw Christina was having her own hair washed by an assistant, avoiding my glance. I went to pay and was SHOCKED at how EXPENSIVE my color was. She charged me: for partial highlight with single process fee/full highlight fee rather than a single process or partial highlight price- and maybe if I loved it I wouldn't have cared... The LADY AT FRONT DESK NEVER ASKED HOW THINGS WERE, or if I liked it and again, being so exasperated, didn't say anything. I'd go back now I've recouped my energy lost to the place to complain, but was only traveling through city. Go get your hair cut by Jamie, it's the right price for an amazing cut, but get your hair dyed by someone else. read more

I am a notoriously indecisive person. Dates have ended poorly for this reason, BUT nothing suffers more than my hair in this regard. I am the worst customer for this reason, as I sit down in the stylist's chair and say, "Do whatever you think looks good!" I came in not yet having found my NY salon, and looking for a drastic change in my look...In short, I was bored. I sat down after a long day of work looking for a full head of highlights and watched the stylist next to me finish up with his client. She got a fantastic cut and color, and I was immediately put at ease. Charlie and Jamie soon came over and gave excellent guidance and their expertise was more than apparent. I walked out with a stellar style (a la Jamie) and some kick-ass highlights (from the truly brilliant Charlie), and even snagged a few compliments on the way home. In summary: Amazing staff who are at your beckon call and are super accommodating and knowledgeable. You're greeted with a beverage, and the stylists work with you to figure out what would suit you best in the way of a cut or color. I received a hair cut here and not only am I unhappy with the cut, I'm pretty unhappy with the service, too. I was there on an admittedly busy Friday, and the woman who cut my hair spent 20 minutes doing it. When it was over I actually said, "Wow, that was really fast," and she looked kind of uncomfortable and said that she also cuts it dry. But then when she dried it she cut it for what felt like two minutes. It was the most perfunctory hair cut I've received in years--she didn't even seem like she was paying attention. I went to her because I was also getting my hair dyed here for the first time, and I figured I'd try out both services. However, the end result is a haircut I don't like and a whole new appreciation for the person who cuts my hair elsewhere. I'm sure a lot of people like fast cuts-they certainly are efficient-but I felt rushed and invisible. I'm used to people who spend A LOT of time on my hair, and while super long cutting sessions might make other people insane, they make me feel like the person is engaged with their work and committed to the results. My hair was long, and I was desperate. So I reached out to my friends, and someone recommended Whittemore House. Previously, I had had my hair cut at Mizu and left feeling so pretty - and hoped I'd have the same experience at Whittemore. Beautiful website. Brilliant that you can book your appointments online. I was practically giddy that I might have found "the one" before I even tried out the place. The place is super cute, and cozy, but let's get to the real reason I was there: for a killer summer hairstyle. I feel weird saying who it was that cut my hair, but it was one of their top stylists who came highly recommended. She was really personable and friendly, and I showed her what I wanted for my hair. She seemed totally onboard and got me really pumped for the haircut.... As the inches came off, there didn't seem to be a tremendous amount of precision (most of my hair was shaved off with a razor) - and within 40 minutes - I was done. Call me crazy, but that's the FASTEST haircut I've ever had - plus, she didn't really blow dry my hair. She put a ton of product, and I ended up looking like I hadn't washed or combed my hair in days. When I finally went home, washed my hair and blew dry my own hair, I noticed that it was uneven in more places than I would expect from a $100+ hair cut. Needless to say, I'm a bit disappointed and will never go back. I'm sure it's a great place, and maybe I was just one of the unlucky ones. My personal advice is that if you're looking for sexy, pretty hair - this is probably not the place to go. But if you're looking for something edgier...or uneven, perhaps - by all means...... My 2nd visit with him, I went from super long to super short. I was nervous. He was not. He gave me a fab cut with mucho chic-ness all around. Told him I wanted a short cut that was smart and not mom-ish. He gave me an amazing pixie cut that's ageless, chic and feminine. Eugene's a pro and he's friendly without being too annoying. He listens and takes in what you want and then makes his suggestions and his skills come through. The salon is fun. Hip and stylish twinged with an air of confidence among its team. Naturally, I looked for the best possible colorist to help me achieve that very natural touch of sun-kissed glow I so arduously sought. -Larry is a supremely talented colorist. He took the utmost care of my hair and my desires and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. He found the most flattering shade of highlights that heightened my complexion and showed off the wonderful haircut I had previously gotten from Ryan. I had the pleasure to get my hair cut by this superb stylist, and if I could give him 10 stars I would! Ryan took his time to find the perfect volume and length for my hair, demonstrating how much he cares for his customers. He gave me beautiful soft layers that are incredibly easy to manage and that are accentuated by my highlights. I have genuinely never been happier with my hair. Everyone there is amazing, friendly, and so talented; Jamie cuts my hair and Charlie does the color. I always leave feeling 10x prettier and more like an actual, put-together human being. I had Niles do a blow-out a couple weeks ago, and we seriously did not stop giggling the entire time I was there. I visited the salon a couple of weeks ago via a Gilt City Coupon. I have curly/wavy long hair and was excited to find a coupon for a $50 cut. I decided to purchase it because they listed Chantell as a hairdresser that specifically cuts curly hair. I was experiencing a lot of split ends, and while I try to follow the "curly girl" method, which excludes sulfates and silicone, I wasn't a stickler when it came to shampoo or product usage. Based on the amount of styling I do she recommended I get a haircut every six weeks, which was a stark contrast to the every 6 months my previous hairdresser recommended. I liked that she noticed that my long layers required another layer, to make it more cohesive, something that I will communicate to my next hair dresser, but that was the extent of her knowledge. She proceeded to cut my hair completely wet, and used her scissors to razor into my hair, while wet and after the blow dry. This thins out the ends of the strands, resulting in poofy unmanigable semi curls. During our consultation, I asked her not to razor, but I guess I should have also said not to cut into it with the blade on her scissors. Silly me. I will now have to wait for everything to grow out so that I can the weird wispy ends removed. In combination with my stick straight blow out, it seemed as though the only "curly" hair knowledge was what she learned from her own hair, which is a completely different curl and texture than most. read more

My hair is extremely thick and wavy/curly and I am a very low-maintenance hair type of person.. I typically just wash (or don't wash), comb and go.. that is no products. Sara Jane, Sara Jane, Sara Jane. She is the BEST. She spends time before your cut playing with your hair, talking about how you style it, what your goals are, and really listening to you before she sends you off for a wash. I have very thick hair that is coarse and wavy. She gave an excellent razor cut that both took away the weight, is easy to style even a week later (always the true test of a good cut) and is a fantastic, sleek shape. Throughout the cut she gives tips for styling, products to use and quick fixes for busy mornings. Not only that, she's fantastic to chat with, and I walk away looking and feeling better. Been going to Sara Jane for awhile now, and I can't speak highly enough of her. She does such a great job that I'm only in the salon once every 3-4 months. It's amazing that when I go back to her, she and I are the only two who can really tell that it's time for a cut. As for Whittemore itself, it's a calm, clean salon. I dock it one star because the decor is a little outdated/Alice in Wonderlandy. It may be time to try for something more modern. read more

Scanning through previous reviews, it seems that Jamie Cook has plenty of fans, but as someone who's been getting cuts from her for 5 years now, I can't help but chime in. If it wasn't for her, I would still be trimming my own mess of hair in the bathroom with two mirrors at 2am. Going to Jamie in my hair modeling college/temping days made me appreciate the importance of a quality haircut. I hadn't thought about it before, but I probably wouldn't have had half the interviews I did if it wasn't for these (I was already pushing my luck with some of my weirder clothes and having sloppy hair wouldn't have helped things). Not that 'professional haircut' is necessarily what you should be looking for when you arrive at Whittemore (this may or may not be directed at a previous review). This place is more about CONFIDENCE hair--a style that works with your personality and type. I, for instance, have a funny shaped head and like a low-maintenance look. Jamie knows how to make that happen, unlike anyone else I've tried to see in the past several years. My final appeal is to women (or men) who don't go to salons very often at all. Whittemore is the place to try. Generally, I avoid salons and spas entirely. I'm uncomfortable being pampered and frequently turned off by the price. That's not the case when I go to Whit. Aside from being slightly intimidated by all the beautiful and stylish people who work there, it's really the perfect experience. The prices are not unreasonable for NY, and the staff friendly, low-pressure and accommodating. I haven't tried their other services yet, but there's really no reason for me to go anywhere else. My annual haircuts are one of the few beauty luxuries I allow myself and I'm happier for it. LOVE the salon, LOVE the neighborhood, LOVE aubrey my colorist! this was my first time at the Whittemore House and I couldn't have been more impressed...it was a night at the salon that you see in the movies. Superbly decorated, the Whittemore House is chic & rustic and cozy & fancy all at once. Upon walking in, I ran into a friend there to get her hair done by Rubi...and another bestie in the city was just finishing up with Aubrey. With my girls there...AND my favorite colorist, the night was complete. Dream night at the salon aside, Aubrey is always spot on with what I want....my color was absolutely perfect, and I walked out of the Whittemore House feeling like I could grace the cover of Vogue. read more

I LOVE this place and LOVE the cut I received from Jamie Cook. I have been getting haircuts from Jamie for about four years now and she never ceases to amaze me. She seems to know instinctually what kind of cut I need and want. She understands my hair and what style will best suit my face and personality. I have gone from pixie cuts to bobs and Jamie has never disappointed. I always walk away with a smile on my face and feeling great about the fun experience I have just had with her! This last cut is hip, easy to maintain, and exactly what I wanted. I always look forward to seeing her (and getting the compliments on my cut/style afterwards)! I have only been to the Whittemore House a few times, but every time I have left very happy. My haircut made me look great and gave me a well needed boost in confidence. Jamie is a darling young woman who can really cut your hair. I believe it is safe to say that she will cut my hair as long as I still live in the city, or she ceases to work her magic scissors, whichever comes first. The rest of the crew is friendly and accommodating, and the building itself is interesting and lively. I highly recommend this salon to anyone who strives to look good. This stuff is no lie, the best product I have ever used to lighten hair! I had been coloring my hair various shades of red-deep burgundy for over 8 years. Times are changing and I wanted something different, something new. I desired the lavender smokey grey look and did not want to bleach my hair. I stumbled upon this product and new it was a sign. Upon using the 'hair paint' I only had to apply it ONCE and the results (after toning) were AMAZING. It completely lightened my hair to a level 10-11 and didn't fry or damage my tresses. Love this salon - read about it in the New York Times years ago and have been loyal since. They are a lovely, powerhouse team, the salon is chic, and as a side note, always smells amazing!
