Best hair cut EVER by their stylist Terue. I have wavy (more like frizzy) hair and she gave me a cut that looked amazing in the salon and still looked great months later as it grew out. I live next to this salon and was excited to potentially have an option so close. Unfortunately, I will not be going due to the rudeness of what I assume to be the man who owns this establishment. My dog pooped on the sidewalk outside of his salon and he walked outside to watch. I promptly apologized, even though sidewalks are public domain. And he sternly told me to pick it up, which I was of course going to do regardless. He then stood over me while I picked it up, telling me how to clean it, urging me to try harder, and then warning me not to let it happen again. This was a horrible encounter from this staff member and I have spoken with individuals in my building who have echoed the same experience, unfortunately. Barbara has been my colorist and stylist for at least 6 years. She has a wonderful eye for matching hair color to skin tone. I am completely white/grey since my early 30's. She gives me a very natural light medium brown color that I love. I used to be darker but she eased me into a lighter brown that was more forgiving as the hair grows. She also realized that I was too dark for my own good. So she gently morphed me to where I needed to be. THANKS, Barbara for always making me a better version of myself!!! Miwa is an excellent place to get a stylish haircut with staff that know what they are doing. I was going to Terue for over a year and a half, and she never failed to give me an excellent haircut. Whether I wanted something specific, or I let her do her own thing, I always left very happy. Leaving NYC was pretty hard - having to leave Terue definitely didnt help. read more

Nathalie Herve is the most talented hair cutter I have ever had. I found her because someone at my gym had a great hair cut and I asked who did it. This is the third salon I have followed her to but I do not expect her to move any time soon. She takes a full hour to cut my hair, straight, short cut and it is always superb. Absolutely scandalous service. Cancelled on my fiancé the day of engagement photos because she was 10 mins late. Called to discuss matter with hairdresser and the hairdresser thought that the correct way to handle this situation was to argue and hang up. Lost a very valuable customer with an extremely large community of people who would have been perfect for this business. If you want highlights GO TO PETER. I have been going to Peter for color/highlights for about 4 years. I am 63 yr. old former Southern California girl who likes her highlights, not bleachy blond with no contrast. But, as gray takes over, it becomes even more challenging to keep natural looking base with hi and lo lights to really look good. Peter can do this. And, he is a really nice man which makes it even more pleasant. The salon is relatively low key, compared to Madison Avenue nonsense. But, I would go anywhere for Peter. I looked for 7 years since I moved back from LA. Peter really understands how to make it look natural, but super wonderful! read more

Miwa - Alex is a bit pricey, but once I made the decision to spend the money Regina has been taken my hair to the next level of professionalism. I am 58 and in the next few years I have to make many public appearances. I am dedicated to cover up the gray every three weeks and condition my hair so it is smooth and shiny for a camera. Regina is sensitive to the cost, my time, and gives me good at-home tips (she is the first styist to EVER -- tell me how to safely use boxed hair color.) I am 64 years old, and this is the first time I have ever written a public complaint, so you can imagine how bad my experience must have been. I went to Miwa-Alex six weeks ago, with a brand new head of white hair that had grown back after I thankfully and successfully completed chemotherapy for Stage IV cancer. I wanted my hair to be blonde. This was a very happy moment to me; I was moving away from chemo and cancer by making my hair "mine" again. I informed colorist Regina of the situation because post-chemo hair may require special treatment; and because I wanted vegetable, not permanent, hair color. Regina was confident, and I went ahead. When I walked out that day, I had paid just under $100 for vegetable dye and a trim. My hair looked...kind of still white, only duller. I figured I just needed to put in permanent color, and it would be more blonde. I consulted my oncologist, and went back a second time, and got permanent color. Regina took $25 off the bill, and when I walked out, I was okay with it. A week later, though, it had faded considerably. Nobody saw it as blonde! I couldn't decide what to do. I decided to trust Regina to get it right, and went back a third time, this time with a photograph of what I wanted: wheat-blonde hair with dimension, either lowlights or highlights. Regina commenced arguing with me, saying It does look blonde; this is what you said you wanted, etc etc. I said,Okay, but today, I have to walk out with hair that is undeniably blonde, and has some dimension. She put in a brand new base color and a full head of lowlights. I walked out not sure, having now spent an additional $200--all told, $400! Within a week,the color faded to what it is today: a monochrome off-blonde gray. I am not rich. This is all the money I have for my hair color. I took a picture of myself with my new "blonde" hair right above a shot of me with my original hair (and if you'd like to see that comparison shot, write me at diana@writersunit.com.) The before is white; the after is gray. I sent it to Miwa Alex in a letter asking for a refund. I addressed it to the owner. I got a call, though, not from the owner but from Barbara, another colorist. She said Miwa Alex does not do refunds, but would I come in? I said no, at this point I didn't trust them any longer; and I wanted at least a partial refund, and please have the owner call me. Instead, Barbara called again. She repeated that I should come in, she just wanted to make me happy, and I said Look, I've just been through cancer, I have to be careful of stress. If I come in, and you start arguing with me--that's not going to work for me. She assured me she just wanted me to be happy. Now listen to this. I did go in today, on a day when my life was incredibly busy (I am teaching an all-day seminar tomorrow) for a 2:00 appointment with Barbara. I brought a picture of hair exactly like I wanted. And she starts to argue. I took a breath, and said, Look, I need to be careful of stress, so if you need to argue, I will leave. And Barbara said, "Good leave, because you are fucking crazy." She shouted this out and then added, "Now get out." Yes, folks. This is what happened to me at Miwa Alex today. And that's not all. Barbara hectored me at the door, telling me that I'm too focused on looks, that I should be more focused on important things now that I've had cancer--and then she went on to compare me unfavorably to others she has known who had cancer, who, it seems, cared more about the important things. Wow. I've only cried a few times throughout my entire ordeal, and today was one of those times. For the love of everything human and compassionate--not to mention for the sake of the most basic professionalism, NEVER EVER GO TO MIWA-ALEX. If they can treat a cancer patient this way--a person for whom the return of hair should be a joyous, wonderful thing--they can treat anybody brutally. And that's exactly what they did. read more

Nathalie does a good haircut provided you don't cross her. i had been seeing her for 14 years, had followed her to four different salons and wrote her up at least three times. Once, only once, I objected to a haircut being too short in the dead of winter. After that she refused to cut my hair any more. When I thought I had made an appointment she did not even speak with me. Instead she left a message stating she would no longer be my stylist. She ended the message with "have a nice day." After my 14 years of devotion she knew me very very well. i stayed on with another stylist for a while then began to hear little remarks about my personal life that only could have come from Nathalie and all those years of sharing everything about myself. I no longer go there and I miss the marvelous Miwa. None of this could have happened were she still with us. Character definitely trumps talent and Nathalie has work to do on herself. read more

I went to Miwa-Alex salon to try out their student cut sessions and see if the salon was worth coming back to and paying full price. One of the worst haircut experiences I've ever had. I went in for a trim with long hair down to the small of my back. We agreed on 2 1/2 - 3 inches at the arms with long layers. Came out with hair 6+ inches shorter (at the longest part), just below my shoulders. I did not see how short the student was cutting it until it was too late. The owner Miwa came over to check while the student was cutting and said she was doing a good job though she should have, as an experienced stylist, seen that the cut was too extreme. Instead of acknowledging that they screwed up, they all tried to say that it looked good. But it was not what I asked for. They lack attention to detail or client care. 6 inches is not a trim, it is a change in hairstyle. I specifically told them I wanted to keep the same style. If they would have told me that it's at your own risk what they decide to do with your hair, then I would not have allowed them to proceed. Their attitude was somewhat arrogant and dismissive. read more

I have been going to Terue for haircuts at Miwa Alex since 2003. Terue is the best haircutter I have ever had. I have very thick, stright Asian hair and Terue always takes her time to give me a very precise and careful cut with scissors (no razors). A haircut from Terue is expensive (almost $100) but since my hair grows out looking great, it's more economical to see her a few times a year than someone local who charges less but gives me a haircut that looks like crap a few weeks later. I now live in Baltimore but go to NYC a few times a year to see Terue because no one comes close, she knows exactly what I want, and I feel so much better after she cuts my hair. Judging from the clientele I see each time I visit, it seems like they are also longtime clients who trust and value the skill of the staff. I have tried to find someone closer who can do as good a job as Terue, but given up because I'm I can't find anyone! read more
