When we arrived and let the hostess know we had made a reservation, she just pointed to our table to be seated. There was a table with about 6 sitting at it. I assumed they were regulars because the hostess was super engaging with that one table. I get that but you have a room full of patrons, at least make an effort. Our server was polite but her attentiveness felt forced and not sincere. The dining room, itself, had an odor of backed up sewage. I realize it's an older building but, do better. I would probably give this restaurant another chance and would be interested to find out if the vibe would be improved with a different mix of folks dining at my table. read more

Nestled in the black land prairie.You will find a down old hwy155 Holman's steakhouse! What a find!!! The place harkens back to the German roots in the area, so for appetizers, we started with the fried bacon and the fried sausage and sauerkraut balls. Don't say no until you try it. They're amazing. But we are not in a hurry, thank you. The salad took a wee bit longer to come out because they were "making the blue cheese" dressing ! Making ! My seafood Deluxe plate was about the best seafood plate I've ever had. The fried shrimp was very lightly dusted. It was just perfect and the fish had such a thin cornmeal crust. It wasn't over breaded. It was perfect. The stuffed crab was top-notch with a lovely sweet crab meat forward. Pair that with mash potatoes, salad and perfectly done squash casserole and you can't go wrong. Now to the steaks - done to order and generously sized. Very nice. Now to desserts!!!! These are mostly all home made! We chose the coconut buttermilk pie and the mudslide. Boy howdy!! Get ya some! OMG!!! So good. I won't say more to not ruin the wonderfulness of their desserts. We found this quaint place out in the middle of nowhere. Neat place with ton of history. Arrived at 6:30 and was seated in the back. Make sure that you make your reservations early to be seated in the front dining room. Drinks and our fried pickles arrived quickly as we watched the band warm up. An hour and a half later the meal arrived. I can't imagine why it would take so long to get our meal. Between being seated and the meal arriving we never saw the waitress the waitress again. 14oz. ribeye was nicely done and served perfectly. The grilled shrimp were very small and overcooked. The 10oz. ribeye was a total failure. Setting the two ribeyes side by side it was apparent that one was either very large or one was very, very small, but there was more than just a 4oz. difference between them. One would think that they came from two different vendors. We did not eat or pay for the 10oz. ribeye. The large Chicken Fried Steak, well... it wasn't large, maybe a small and that is being generous, it was also over breaded. Can you say Sysco Foods on a budget? Considering the quality of the food and the drive, the drive was the better of the two. Pass this place up. read more

My family and I came to the La Grange area from the DFW area for a weekend long birthday celebration. We chose Holman Valley's Steakhouse out of the pickings nearby due to their ratings, food style, and proximity to our place of stay. We didn't know what to expect as we've never been nor are we from around here, but Holman's surpassed every expectation plus some. When arriving we were able to tell they were busy, and I ran in quickly to ask whether or not there was a wait time and if so how long. When going in I saw how busy they truly were and assumed we wouldn't be seated right away. The hostess (Becky) was super helpful, kind, and made sure to find room for us in order to be sat down immediately. When we sat down our waitress greeted us quickly to ask for our drinks and (possible) appetizers. We got those, and she then asked if we were ready to order (we were) and did. During the wait time of our food, our waitress made sure to check on us every few minutes for our needs and even went above by providing help with our toddler whom was fussy. Our food was ABSOLUTELY amazing and in fact one of the best meals we've had in awhile. On top of that, they had a special going on for $19.95 that came with a sirloin, two sides, and your choice of soup or salad. They had a decent amount of options on the menu and everything seen on their website was accurate (prices, times, location, etc.) The environment was full of the sweetest people between staff and other customers which provide comfort as we're away from our normal. In fact a cook came out to chit chat with customers and ask how everything was. There was not a single complaint from myself or any of my loved ones. We're excited to eat our leftovers. The waitress (without us asking) suggested she split the soup and salad into our own bowls, which was great. The service is very good. My only drawback preventing the 5th star is how loud it is. Saturday night! This place was wonderful as always. Sorry, no picture, it was all too good. One in our party had the filet, another had the pork chop, another had the sm ribeye, one had the chicken fried chicken and I had the Holman Valley chicken. Nothing was left on the plates . I love this old building. When the dancehall has free bands, it's the best place around to go dancing. Young and old alike have a great time. I've been to several of their special dinners, like NYE and Valentine's Day. I won't be going again for the special occasion dinners. I'm always still hungry afterwards. The serving sizes are tiny. The filet was absolutely delicious, though small. Potatoes were hard. I'd forgive the small filet if I could fill up on the sides, but you get tiny portions on the sides, too. You also get a small salad and one cold roll. No butter for the roll or lemons for tea without asking. No salt and pepper on table. The crème brûlée was disappointing. The best part about crème brûlée is the caramelized sugar on top. Theirs was just a cup of custard. Their buttermilk pie is to die for. Delicious! Unfortunately, on their special dinners you don't get that choice. Servers are sweet but clearly not professionals. They take forever to get any needs you might request, such as butter, tartar sauce, lemon, whatever. They seem rather scattered and disorganized. This is all fine if you know this going in - but at these prices, I expect either great service or great food. At least one or the other. Preferably both. Regular meal nights are pretty good. I've only had steak once time. I think maybe I just had a bad experience on that one night because the filet I had on one of the special dinners was fantastic, and everybody else seems to think their daily steaks are great. The steak I got had zero seasoning. It was also a bit tough. I'm going to give their steak another try. I think I just got an off night. The squash casserole is yummy. Dinner salad is on the small side but good. So, all in all, I really do like this steakhouse. I just would avoid the special dinners at the holidays. They try real hard to make it fancy, but fall short. It's no Round Top Cafe. If you know that going in, then go for it. read more

The food was delicious but the stuff they clean the tables with smells pretty bad. Some kind of lemon bleach. Still, everything at our table looked great. My ribeye was cooked just right. First of all let me say WOW now THIS is Texas home-style cooking at it's best!!! I hadn't been to Holman's since I was very young but after hearing there was some changes in ownership we decided to try it again (it always seemed a bit dirty so we didn't go for awhile). Clearly there were changes and refurbishment in the decor that made it look sooo cute, clean and classy while keeping the antique charm of the building! The food was absolutely delicious just as I had remembered and the fried bacon CANNOT be passed up!!! One of the best thing I've ever eaten! For my meal I ordered grilled shrimp with broccoli and instead I got fried shrimp with green beans... totally different order but the staff was super nice and accommodating to fix the error! I felt bad throwing away perfectly good shrimp so I ate it anyways, and YUM! What a happy accident!!! The fried shrimp was some of the best I've ever had! I only take off one star because in the heat of a Texas summer, it was very warm in there because the building is so old, and the service was a bit slow and also made my order wrong. But the staff was super nice and apologetic and I can't wait to come back!!! read more

Drove from San Antonio to try this place, we were told it is great. Good food, Great Steaks. So we got there at 730 pm, table for 6, ordered Porterhouse steaks. We were told they only had one left. Then we asked for bone in ribeye, we were told they had none. So we ordered Salmon, grilled Chicken, no bone ribeye steaks, most sides were not available, we got our food @ 845 pm. Pretty long wait. The food needed seasoning, thank goodness for salt and pepper table shakers. No Flavor. The service, don't know for sure what to think. She seemed sweet, without knowledge of service. We waited long for tea refills, we ordered fried mushrooms for appetizers along with cabbage and sausage balls, well once we received them, how do we eat them, missing appetizer plates, forgot the ranch dressing, and continued waiting for tea refills. Once we got our tasteless meal, we were pushed to check our steaks for perfection, why, if they weren't, they wouldn't replace them, they ran out. The within 5 minutes to 9, were being rushed to eat, they closed at 9, imagine that. On one meal, the sides were counted, one meal included brocolli, got 4 lil pieces, we asked if that was all the brocoli the plate would get, the server stayed we will get you a side, took a while and we got a side of brocoli, why not include it on the plate. Did I mentioned, we asked for one more appetizer, fried chicken bacon, yeap, they are out. Remember it was 730 pm. Towards the end we FINALLY got tea refills, we asked for lemons 5 times but only managed to get 2 sets of lemons, 4 lil pieces included for a table of 6. Holman Vally Steak House is only open 3 days a week. Thursday through Saturday and they only open for dinner. We ordered the fried pickles as an appetizer. They were pipping hot and not greasy. Some of the best that I have had. Served with ranch dressing. For my entree I ordered the 10 -12 oz ribeye. The dinner comes with your choice of baked potato or fries, soup and salad. Soup choices are homemade chicken noodle or potato soup. I had the chicken noodle and it was great. I also tried the potato soup, it was good but not like you would expect. It was more of a clear broth, not the standard creamy style. The salad was pretty plain, one tomato slice and blue cheese. Complementary crunchy bread sticks were also serve with the soup / salad. They are kind of like long croutons. Very good. I had ordered my ribeye rare, unfortunately it was a very thin steak so it came out overcooked about med to med well. No seasoning at all. I wouldn't order it again. I may try the chicken fried chicken next time. The special of the day was the chicken fried ribeye. I didn't try it but was told it was just ok, it was lacking in seasoning as well. Our waitress also said they can chicken fry anything on the menu if we wanted. LOL Service was great. My husband brought me to this little restaurant, that's on his route for work. We were very impressed with the service and of course, the food! The sausage and sauerkraut balls were delicious. Then, I had their Chicken Fried Steak with sweet potato fries and squash casserole while my hubby had their NY Strip Steak with baked potato casserole and fried okra. It was for us a PERFECT MEAL! Great little steakhouse located between Weimar and La Grange on FM 155 North. It's a nice dive and located in a small valley out in the country, far enough in the country that my cell phone reception was at one bar. It is open three days a week, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for dinner. Until recently it wasn't usually very crowded but in my last two visits on a Saturday evening, it has been crowded around 7:00PM and seems to stay that way. Get there early. The menu is a basic steak house variety with various cuts of steak, some chicken choices and an expanded seafood menu, mostly fried. Wine and beer are available with your general run of national beers and wines. Food is well prepared and my Chicken Fried Steak was crispy and tended. The sides of fried okra and steak fries were a nice addition. The steaks all looked good. The chicken soup is very good along with the toasted bread. This place caters to locals from Weimar, Oakland and La Grange and folks seem to know each other. Staff are great, no issues with service, always a smile and very helpful. read more

Holman Valley Steakhouse is amazing. We've been driving all the way from Austin to the Weimary for about 8 months now for their monthly classes, and each time we've driven by Holman Valley Steakhouse and this time we finally decided to make the drive a little earlier so that we could go in and check this place out. First off, the coffee here is awesome. They keep you nicely topped up, will make it fresh if you ask, and it's like being home for a strong cup of joe. Secondly, we ordered the chicken fried bacon and the sausage sauerkraut balls for appetisers. Both were phenomenal. Admittedly, I was hesitant about the sauerkraut balls, but tried them because of other yelp reviews and am happy I did. Both are total comfort foods and not diet friendly, but both are full of flavor and totally worth ordering. And the chicken fried bacon comes with a delicious homemade white gravy that is absolutely fantastic. For the main meal, we ordered the corn flake fried chicken and a cheeseburger. For starters, this place has the best burgers. The buns are homemade and seriously delicious and the burgers are SUPER thick and wonderful. As for the cornflake fried chicken, I was expecting a chicken fried steak but instead got a chicken breast that was corn flake breaded. It was WAY better than I had anticipated. Also, each meal came with a soup or salad. We each got soup, one a tomato basil, one a chicken noodle. The chicken noodle was decent, but the the tomato basil was literally the best soup I've ever had. Definitely order this, it will change your life. As for the sides, the fries with the burger were standard fair, they were good and cripsy. I got fried okra with the corn flake chicken and the squash casserole. The fried okra wasn't bad, about typical for what you'd expect, BUT the squash casserole was to die for. Seriously, take a chance on this one. I know one former yelper said it was mediocre, but you definitely want to order this. You won't regret it. To be honest, the next time I'm there I'm probably going to get this for both of my side dishes. To finish off our meal, we decided to order dessert. My girlfriend got the mudslide, which was this MASSIVE brownie with whip cream and ice cream. Totally worth the $5.50, and served warm. I decided to go with the carrot cake, which is made by one of the co-owners, who also happened to be my server (she recommended the carrot cake). Now I'm kind of a carrot cake snob, at 30 years old I've claimed carrot cake as my favorite cake since I was four years old and I've ordered it at nearly every restaurant I've ever eaten at that happened to serve it. As a result, my expectations are generally fairly low. Meet the bare minimum and I'm happy enough. But in all hoenesty, this was the best carrot cake I've ever had in my life. It was a massive slice, and every bite was heavenly. They don't skimp on anything here, and this cake was totally worth the hour and a half drive on it's own. To summarise, this place is shockingly good. The service was outstanding. Patty was super sweet and everyone there was so friendly and treated us like family. The food was amazing, and what with the portion sizes and the prices, you can't ask for a better deal. Couple all that with the fact that this is all taking place in a hundred year old home that you can just sense the history of, and this place is such a treat. Although it's in the middle of nowhere (for us city folk) the desserts (especially Patty's carrot cake) and that squash casserole are sooooooo worth the drive. We're actually planning on making the drive out here just for this place and to do a little exploring, that's how good this place is. Please, please do make the journey here. I drove by it for 8 months before actually going in, and I wish I had pulled in during my first trip. It's down to earth, country food. Thank goodness this place is so far from my house. If it were just a stone's throw from my house I'd have to buy a whole new wardrobe (of a much bigger size, since I'd be coming here so often!). My mind pondered the memory of the fabulous dinners I had had at such steak houses as Flemings, Capital Grill or The Palm. I was thinking that Holmans could be the reason I had moved to La Grange... some divine culinary hand of God had reach down and granted me a home just a few miles from a wonderful and classy steakhouse. My dreams were not to come true... BUT THEY COULD! If Holmans could just realize what they could become! Holman Steak House could be fine dining experience instead of what they are... another country cooking place. Another one among the many chicken fried steak and burger joints. There is no excuse for how filthy this place is. The carpet is absolutely beyond gross and smelly. The food is mediocre and the servers all seem unhappy and make no effort. "Historical" is not defined as filthy. We're sorry the owner chooses to have customers eat, while smelling and looking at 40 year old stained up filthy carpet. NY strip was excellent. perfect medium rare, juicy, and great flavors. absolutely would order again. mashed potatoes seemed to be real and not instant... but could be wrong here. squash casserole was ok, but would not order again. brown gravy sure seemed like a mix. it was OK, but would go with cream gravy next time. I highly recommend the sausage balls for an appetizer. not a huge fan of sauerkraut, but everyone loved them. overall, a nice place close to home. the steaks seem to be their signature dish and we all agreed that we would order it over the other offerings next time. read more

I rarely give 5 stars for any business, but feel like this place deserves it. Friday night I ordered seafood platter with asparagus and squash casserole. Wife had the 8 oz. filet with baked potato. I don't normally order appetizers, but made an exception this time since I wanted to try the chicken-fried bacon and sausage balls. They were out of the sausage balls, so I ordered half order of each of the bacon and fried mushrooms. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty each appetizer was. The main dishes were very good. Shrimp was mighty tasty and catfish very good, also. Only negative I offer is the deviled crab was not very good. Maybe it sat in the cooler too long? The Shiner beer was served cold and the meal was served hot. The filet was certainly more than 8 ounces and cooked to perfection. It must have been almost 3 inches thick! Needless to say, we had to get "to-go" plates since we couldn't finish that which was served. The wait staff was always available and friendly. I have to say that prices are certainly a bargain here. If you're looking for fancy ambience don't go here. This is a plain, old-fashioned, wood floor building that has been around for a long time. If you want fancy decor, then go to Bob's Steakhouse in Austin or someplace similar. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely visit there again. read more

Great local place for a nice meal. Our party of 4 all enjoyed our meals including mushroom appetizer (made with fresh mushrooms), chicken strips, burgers and chicken fried steak. Ambiance is casual enough for jeans, but nice enough for a date. Gravy was delicious and all the sides were from scratch. My home cooking fix for the trip. Would eat here again and enjoyed three option for some veggies that were plain as an option for a side dish if you are dining low carb. This is one of my favorite little road trips from Austin! The setting is very cool if you're into Texas rural architecture. The food and service are both great. I'm a big fan of just about everything on the menu. Don't miss the sauerkraut and sausage balls or the fried mushrooms as appetizers. The steaks are always nice and the sides are great. There was a seasonal squash casserole on the board the last time I was there and it was delicious. We're not at 5 stars here because the chicken fried steak was way heavy on the batter and that's a big thing to get wrong at this type of place. That will certainly not keep me away though. It's a small town restaurant in the middle of nowhere but so worth it if you are anywhere between Weimar and LaGrange. We went on a Saturday night and our waitress was busy but attentive and every table seemed to know at least one other table in the restaurant and it was obvious this is where the community comes to eat on the weekend. We started with onion rings that were freshly made, the tomato basil soup was delicious and the chicken noodle soup was full of thin homemade noodles. The chicken fried chicken and the chicken fried steak were large and tasty and had some great gravy that was obviously made from scratch. We had a wonderful meal for about $40, and I admit this city girl was shocked that you pay at the front using an ipad since there isn't the greatest cell reception out there. New owners! Very professional and friendly staff; aim to please! The building was pretty cold, but the temp outside was 36 so the circumstances were a bit out of the ordinary! We ordered Seafood Platter and Holman's Chicken. We will definitely give them a vote for a repeat performance. What we noticed in addition to the staff --- FRESH green beans, baked potatoes that were properly cooked, fresh salads and decent portions. I want this restaurant to make it because we desperately need restaurants that serve quality food with staff that care about customer service! Excellent restaurant. In our party of three two of us had the grilled chicken with spinach/mushrooms, and one had the NY Strip steak and Shrimp. We all thought the dishes were quite excellent. The chicken, In particular, was tasty and delicate enough to have been served in an up-scale French restaurant in a big city, yet here we were in a country-side restaurant, in the middle of a rural road with hardly any traffic. The appetizer we chose was grilled zuchini which came with an excellent dip - a nice change from the usual fried vegetables. I had the buttermilk pie that I found to be delicious. All the ingredients looked to be fresh and carefully selected and the red merlot we had with the meal was more than satisfactory for a rather modest price.
