I found out about this place via a Kauai guidebook that I purchased. This was one of the best suggestions they had in the book and likely my favorite activity I did on the island. We did the 5 hour Snorkel and Whale Watching tour. Whale watching is seasonal for the Winter, so in January we were all set! I felt this was a good mix between the 3 hour and the 7 hour tours. We booked online so we could save $15 per person so it ended up being about $131 with taxes per person. Just after we boarded the boat we already saw our first whale. Well, everyone else did and I missed it! We headed out into the ocean and the swells were big so the boat was all over the place. I got a little sea sick and then leveled out after about an hour. Make sure to take some motion sickness non-drowsy pills to be safe. I did and I still got sick for a bit. They had a continental breakfast that had pastries, bagel and cream cheese, fresh fruit, coffee and tea. After breakfast we continued down the Napali Coast and we ran into some dolphins out in the distance. When the Captain sees animals he immediately changes direction and heads towards them so we can try to see them up close. Not before too long we saw a group of whales in the distance. As we got close to them we saw their fins as they dove down and then one of them jumped. It gave me chills as that is something on my bucket list. The massive size of the whale is amazing as it crashes into the water. I could watch it all day if I could. We also saw more whales, jumping dolphins, and sea turtles. I could not have asked for anything more!! They served up a large buffet lunch and it was sub sandwiches, pasta salad, veggie tray and more. There also was unlimited beer, wine and sodas. The staff is EXTREMELY friendly and so overly welcoming in a good way. They are very very knowledgeable about the island and are happy to give you random facts as well as answer questions or give suggestions. One of the crew members, Amy, was my favorite! Because of the water conditions we did not snorkel, but I was okay with that since I had been snorkeling at local beaches a couple times before during the week. Shout out to Anini Beach for having turtles EVERYWHERE and being able to swim with them. One thing to keep in mind when booking this trip is that the ocean is a wild and crazy place that is hard to tame. The trip are often push back and rescheduled due to ocean conditions. A lot of this is cause by swells coming in and not necessarily the rain. We originally booked for Sunday and did not go out until Friday, our last day there. So book EARLY so you can try another day if needed. You can't leave this island without a boat tour and if I could give this tour 6 stars I would!! read more

9/4/2015 My boyfriend and I went on the Napali snorkel tour ( raft boat ). Beginning your trip make sure you go to the Tahiti hut restaurant ( go to the back of the restaurant ) and park and a staff member will help check you in. Once checked in your assigned captain will brief you on the condition of the weather and water. Our captain was Captain Ron. He explained to us that we would unfortunately not be snorkeling due to the merky water, the waters were pretty tough. We understand 100% why we wouldn't go snorkeling ... SAFETY FIRST!!! Even that captain Ron assured us we would have a blast. AND WE DID!!! This tour was awesome ! The history, the sea turtles , the Dolphins doing flips!!! It was awesome ! Andrea (crew member / co pilot / HALL OF FAMER FOR WAVEBOARDING!) Was amazing ! She truly welcomed you with open arms I recommend this tour and STILL GIVE IT A 5 star review even though we didn't get to snorkel... The sight seeing ... Had the pleasure of taking the 6AM 'Forbidden Island' snorkel cruise with my wife last week. Having done the same exact trip with a different company 9 years ago, I was a bit trepidatious about getting on a catamaran with 40 strangers and having them puke on me again. Alas, my fears were assuaged from the moment our captain gave us the usual safety speech. Along with the two deck hands, this crew was knowledgable about the islands history and very attentive to everyones needs throughout the trip. There were the usual 1 or 2 assholes (spray-on sun lotion, hogging the best seats, etc ..) but you come to expect that on vacation. The boat was not over-crowded and everyone seemed to have an awesome time. We got super close to the Na pali coast (I thought we were about to smash into a cave) while the captain regaled us with tales of the Robinson family and other interesting bits of history that I never knew. If you want to see the coast and get some snorkel time in while you're on Kauai, go with these guys. They don't treat tourists like idiots (even when some of them are) and make the entire process very simple ... as it should be. read more

Amazing boat (Leila), great crew (Amy, Jeff, Josh), Great time all around. Saw flying fish, spinner dolphins, sea turtles, reef fish, birds, boats, and the gorgeous Napali Coast on the 5 hour Snorkel Sail tour. The snorkeling was a bit short short because the water was murky - I don't blame the staff at all. They made the trip pleasant and fun. It was an easy cruise with a small party of 12. Five hours on the open sea and well worth the price. Highlights of the trip were riding the chop, seeing the cliffs and wildlife and the moment when the engine was turned off and the sails took over. Nice 65 foot Power Catamaran. Fast, smooth ride out to the Napali Coast with a great crew. Captain Ian gave good narration during the tour and the crew - Shaked and Jeremy could not have been better. They cheerfully took care of everybody's needs. Kauai Vacation Tours booked our Sunset Cruise and it did not disappoint. They served Mai tais, margaritas, beer, wine, and soft drinks during cruise. Sunset champagne toast too. If you have not spent much time on the ocean, or know that you get sea sick prepare ahead of time. Either get the behind the ear patch from a doctor I've read it's extremely effective, or I hear that bonine works and does not make you drowsy. What an amazing experience!! Captain Kellie and her crew provided the most incredible tour of the Nā Poli Coastline and Kauai. 1st the Crew was darling, Helpful, thoughtful & kind! The water was calm the morning we went on the 71/2 HOUR tour, but Ouch it was still way to long of a ride for us for what we saw. Several men very seasick/pucking into water. Granted we stayed (Hanalei Colony Resort) on the north shore so Napli was seen daily, we did see turtles,monk seals,spinner Dolphin's & the crew told us how if the Spiner Dolphins are captured to live in a zoo (example) that they will kill themselfs within 18 hours! Maybe if most animals did that we humans would leave them alone. So anyway yes it was beautiful, snorkeling was awesome! I'm 62, my husband is 43 and we both felt that the wavy catamaran ride was not worth it. Our 17 year old granddaughter LOVED it all. Haven't been out yet - we are going today. We knew on Friday when we saw the surf report that it was going to be to much and weren't allowed to switch days until we got there. We have two somewhat sensitive people in our group so we didn't want to press our luck It kinda messed up our day since we were stuck waiting for the change but glad we are able to change. Policy I guess but we weren't thrilled. Looking forward to what we are sure will be a great cruise today though. Update - Did have an amazing cruise. Our crew- Jessica Drew and Rich could not have been a nicer group or more accomodating. Really appreciated their hard work. Though it has been 6 years since I was in Kauai, I still relish the morning 5 hour snorkel/sail I took with Holo Holo to the Na Pali coast and Ni'ihau. The crew, scene, sights, & food were quality. I saw a school of spinner dolphins by the Na Pali (cliffs) that was still one of the most amazing wildlife sights I have ever encountered. I think everyone else goes to see the whales, but the dolphins were the top for me. I have now taken several catamaran trips on different islands such as Maui, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico and this still is the experience I compare all the others to. read more

unexpected surprise to find out this was a high-speed cat rather than sail - but it gave us a fast and scenic tour where we got to see a lot. we were able to nose into places a sailboat could never go and the scenery is truly spectacular. Great captain who gave us a great history of the coast as well as kept us from puking. the Crew were super friendly and kept a beer in my hand the whole time. Absolutely great tour! The views were breath taking! The crew (Captain Glenn, Jay and Jacob) did a great job keeping everyone entertained! Jay and Jacob were also so helpful when taking pictures! I loved that we got to see dolphins, turtles, rays, mountain goats and monk seals! The weather was perfect as we saw several rainbows during the tour. The food was delicious! Review Summary: Solid but pricey boat tour of the amazing Na Pali cliffs with a friendly, funny crew but the snorkeling was mediocre compared to The Tunnels and we went into only 1 cave that was boring and looked nothing like the picture with the skylight in the brochure. Lunch was turkey sandwich with Doritos/Cheetos + Chocolate Chip Cookie. Veg option just removes the turkey. Detailed Review: Took the Na Pali coast Challenger tour for $169/person. Reservations were easy over the phone and cancellation policy was clearly explained. Getting to the boat can be efficient or kind of a pain. You first wait for a van to do a 10 minute roundtrip load of 10 passengers. Then once it's your turn, you take the van a short ways to a river where the captain picks you up in a dingy to take you on a 5 minute ride to the real boat. So it can be as short as 15 minutes or as long as an hour to get on and off the boat if you have to wait for several groups of people. Luckily the Captain and his crew had a good sense of humor and knew a lot of jokes. The Na Pali coast is amazing and even better to view from a boat than it was with a helicopter (the cliffs just look so much bigger). Going south wasn't rough but coming back was very bumpy. If you are prone to seasickness, I recommend 1 Bonine at bedtime and one the morning of the outing. We saw spinner dolphins running with another boat (never joined our boat) and about a dozen sea turtles. One person even snorkeled with one. The chance to explore caves along the coast convinced us to sign up but this part of the tour was very disappointing. The other somewhat disappointing aspect was the snorkeling. That's covered in other reviews but there weren't that many fish to see and the snorkeling felt like a waste of time compared to the Tunnels. read more

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Incredibly competent, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Never lost their cool even when I was (the only one) convinced we were going to flip over, even when I almost got seasick... We did the full Napali-Niihau package which included a nice breakfast of pastries and coffee, an even nicer lunch of GOOD deli items, salads, wine/beer, soda, dessert. We got to see a TON of dolphins, many were swimming right underneath us! We also saw a bunch of whales. My favorite part was when they took us open-water snorkeling, where they anchored the boat near a reef, and we jumped in! They provided clean basic snorkel gear, gave us noodles to float on, and got a real glimpse into a natural habitat. It felt like an aquarium with the variety of fish and coral we saw, even some very delicate appearing ones! Very different from beach snorkeling, as those fish are usually much heartier and used to humans swimming about. Unfortunately, the waters were too rough to go see Niihau, but that was A-OK with me because the waves were crazy! Husband and I did the Sunset Cruise tour. It was fun, but be warned- it can be pretty intense. When I pictured dinner cruise I thought it would be relaxing, and it turned out to be a high-sea adventure- complete with all passengers being drenched from head to toe due to the huge swells. Maybe our tour was just a fluke but be warned this might happen! In any case, we were okay with it. The food is mediocre at best, but the crew is super nice and you cannot beat the views. Oh and it seems that there is unlimited booze so things go from stable to sloshy very fast. Definitely go if you're up for some adventure. read more

Which tour: 4hr Na Pali Snorkel Adventure The Good: Guided tour of the Na Pali coastline, comfortable seating, going into sea caves, friendly/funny staff, discount cards available at Costco, bathroom on board, saw dolphins, turtles and rays mating (all from the boat) The Bad: The Snorkeling, slightly bigger boat so not all sea caves are accessible all the time. If you are going to to a tour make sure you do your research and pick the tour based on what is important to you. For my wife the snorkeling was the most important part. For me the sea caves were #1 and snorkeling #2. After the tour we learned there are 2 primary spots to snorkel on the Na Pali coast and they took us to the farther spot (Kauhao Valley area). On the positive side some people did see turtles but not all. Other than that, there was hardly any sea life. In fact I saw more fish (in quantity and variety) in Hanalei Bay than I did on this tour. The research we did also said this was a very sub par spot to snorkel. So if you book this and are looking to snorkel, If they are going to the same spot as us, skip it. Otherwise, if you are less interested in the snorkeling then everything else was great. Note: some of the smaller boats make you sit on the rail and to prevent you from falling out, you hold onto rope. They give you gloves to help prevent blisters. So if you do go with a smaller different boat, be sure to keep that in mind. read more

This was a much awaited part of our Lihue trip. [Nihau + Napali Super Tour] The views are fantastic, and totally worth the 7 hours spent. A bunch of items covered in this trip: - View of some parts of Waimea Canyon - View of the North beaches, generally not accessible by road - The much hyped and totally worth-it NaPali coast - Sea-Caves - Whales and Dolphin watching along the way. - Nihau island view - Snorkeling near Lehua crater The crew is very very helpful and knowledgeable. I am generally not a person who gets sea-sick, but I had an off day, and threw up even after having Dramamine. My wife too was sea-sick. However, the crew - Bronson and Aaron in particular, were very very helpful and made sure, that I am taken care of. Thanks guys !! :) They even tried to egg me on to try the snorkel, but I was way too drowsy for it. I did recover on the way back, but a little too late. This is my second occasion to take a charter to the Na Pali Coast on Kauai. On the recommendation of the concierge at my hotel I booked a trip with Holo-Holo Charters. The weather and the ocean treated us kindly because it can be windy and rough on the Na Pali Coast, especially when sailing back to port. The crew of Captain Kelly, Wade, Elijah, and Chellen were knowledgeable, helpful, and made our overall experience more enjoyable. The fifty-foot catamaran, Leila, was in great shape and the food that was served was much better than expected. Knowledgeable, friendly crew with outstanding scenery and wildlife. 10/6/2014 - I took the Napali coast & Niihau super tour with Captain Wendell and crewmates - Kama and Chella (if I misspelled your name I apologize). The tour was amazing. We saw two separate pods of Spinner dolphins, a sleeping Monk seal, loads of flying fish, and plenty of other sea life and beautiful scenery. It is well worth the price. Captain Wendell is very knowledgable, and manages quite artfully to combine humor, leaning, and safety lessons. The crew were very friendly and happy to give tips on other activities and places to eat on Kauai. They took great care of us with coffee, breakfast, lunch, and plenty of beer. The only thing I would recommend is if you plan to do serious snorkeling then bring your own mask. read more

I would give this 10 stars if I could. We had an awesome day. The 3 man crew of Emily, rich and ???? fell over themselves to serve us. They were knowledgeable, friendly and easy to chat with. They offered to take pictures of my wife and I when we tried to do a shot of ourselves and the napali coast. When we came upon whales they stopped so we could watch. We came across a pod of spinner dolphins and we reversed course so we could watch them for a few minutes. The seas were calm for February so we got in very close to the napali coast. The food was just ok but the awesome boat tour made up for that. This was a highlight of the vacation. read more

We did the Napali Coast Sunset Dinner Cruise on 3/11. We used costco cards which were $80 for a $100 value! We were little nervous at first, because upon check in, the captain for the day informed us that waters were choppy by the Napali Coast, and that we may or may not get to see much of it due to the wind and swells. At that point, they gave us the option to cancel or reschedule...but it was our last night in Kauai, so we decided to still go. Boy are we glad we did. This turned out to be a definite highlight of our trip. The captain, Ian, was super informative and friendly, and managed to navigate the waters with such finesse that we were able to get right over to Napali Coast! The onboard crew, Shikead and Emily, were beyond sweet, friendly and took amazing care of everyone on board. We ate yummy tacos for our dinner - a nice casual dinner option, although for the cost of the charter we expected a bit more from a meal perspective. They had mai tais, beer and wine available too. They also had cheeses and crackers, veggies and dip, and cookies available for snacking. Overall this was a solid experience made even better by the crew on board. We would recommend this to anyone visiting Kauai. read more

Went on the Na Pali coast snorkel tour. The boat and crew were very nice. the food was good, beer and wine and sodas and juice. Bring your own snorkel gear if you have it, theirs is terrible. thats why this is 4 stars. Sailing is so much nicer than power boating, you get shade and its a quiet ride, I dont want to marvel at natures beauty with 120 decibels of engine blaring in the background. Also costco has spend 80$ get 100$ in giftcards and you can order it online! so my wife and I went for $240 instead of $300 read more

OMG! This catamaran had two 450hp engines and is one fast boat on the water. We were briefed once on land by Jess and once on the boat by Cappy. Safety of the passengers is number one. When the seas got rough, we had 5 people hurling into the red buckets. The crew helped the afflicted by moving them into open air, wiping their brow, providing drinks and giving words of encouragement. Deckhand Shaked was always willing to remove empty cans, cups and personalize the trip. Being a sailor myself, I would suggest drinking and or eating anything that contains ginger a couple of hours before the trip. And eat a very light breakfast....nothing greasy. I give the crew, food and experience 5 stars. I have to deduct one star to the boat owner because the port side fire extinguisher had corrosion around the neck and should have been replaced. My wife and I did the 3 1/2 hr sunset cruise which included alcoholic beverages and a tasty dinner. Captain Drew was amazing with his sailing skills and the knowledge of the area with valuable suggestions of activities one can participate in. Drew was joined with equally capable crew (Jess and Nicole) who took care of the customers needs every step of the way. Highly recommended. Unfortunately we did not see the Dolphins, but were treated to a Spotted eagle ray activity which Drew pointed out when he noticed from the upper deck. My wife and I took the Ni'ihau super tour for snorkeling. The captain came out at check-in and warned us that there were strong northerly winds, and that the rough waters may negate us going to the Ni'ihau cove, but that he would get us a different snorkeling spot. He said that he'd take us farther along the island coast (Kauai) to see more of the Na Pali but warned that going north around the island would be very "adventurous." He gave everyone a few minutes to think about it and said if anybody wanted to turn back that the office would refund their ticket price or reschedule, no questions asked. We went with it, and both of us got sea sick but at least held it in enough not to have to "shoot for distance." On our way up the coast we saw a pod of spinner dolphins, and some sea turtles. The captain was very knowledgeable about the history and geography of the island and shared details you don't hear from the tour guide books. He brought us back to our new snorkel spot and before he anchored down he let us know that he phoned the office and reported we didn't go to the other island and then let us know that we'd receive a prorated refund because of it. That put everybody in a better mood, as most of us were pretty haggard from the rough waters and eager to snorkel. We got to see tons of fish and this spot was enough space that we weren't bumping into the other people on the tour. One suggestion is that when the boat is docked, get to the head of the line to jump in, since there's only one at a time per jump spot on the boat. (In our case, there were two spots, and my wife and I were in and swimming while people were still prepping.) read more

We took the Napali Coast sunset cruise with Captain Drew, with Jess and Jay crewing. The trip was laid back, casual, and of course - gorgeous. Jess is a marine biologist and extremely knowledgeable. Captain Drew's playlist is possibly a wee bit eccentric to some, but I loved every song. Highly recommend, especially in winter/spring months when you don't necessarily want to snorkel, but definitely want to see the majestic impressiveness of the Kauai Coast. read more

Awesome experience with these guys. We did the sunset dinner cruise with captain Drew, Ahren and Bronson all of which were amazing. Drew was a great driver, getting us inside the caves (front and back of the boat) and Ahren and Bronson were there every time you needed a photo, another drink or just somebody to hold on to to catch your balance. Ahren must've taken a total of 50 pictures for my boyfriend and I, and the scenery of the Napali Coast while I was unable to stand still due to the waves. The coastline was stunning and you get so close to it. We wished there was more of a variety in the cheese/cracker platter but this was my favorite Kalua pork I had while on the island! One thing to keep in mind on this tour is that you WILL get wet. We did not have the expectation of getting wet and walked away completely soaked from the waves. It was a blast and by far my favorite part of our vacation. Highly highly recommend! read more

Great 7 hour tour of the Na'Pali coast and snorkeling near Ni'ihau at the end of Nov. 2011. We saw a Humpback whale & her calf, and spinner dolphins on the way out. Swam w/a Monk seal while snorkeling (along with many awesome fish). And 3 huge manta rays swam alongside the boat on the way back in. Like other reviewers mention, at this time of year the seas can get rough, and our trip was no exception. One lady was sick from the time we left port practically, and had her head in a bucket until we got back 7 hours later:( And she took Dramamine before leaving. Capt. Wendell had to decide if we should risk the trip across the channel, and decided it was a go. We were very pleased with the crew who were friendly and informative. The boat is a one-of-a-kind power catamaran designed by the company owner I was told, it has no sail, and was actually one of the smoothest rides on a choppy ocean I have ever been on. They served us breakfast (you gotta be there by 6 am!) and lunch both, and it was a nice spread both times. After snorkeling you may drink at the open bar, but as the sea was rough, I was the ONLY person on the boat drinking on the way back. lol No, I didn't lose it. :) Capt. W. can get that 60' boat into some tight spots for sure! And his narrative throughout the trip was superbly informative. Some beaches on the Na'Pali coast are off-limits to any kind of boat landing on them, even a kayak, because they are sacred ground. And, unless you want to hike 11 miles in to see what we saw, it is a great way to view the cliffs, mountains, beaches and the earliest Kauai settlements along that coast. There were no kids on our tour, no one under 18 I don't think, and I was glad because I am sure there would have been more people sick. I highly recommend this company. read more

We went on Holo Holo tours last trip to Kauai and I thought the Captain was having a bad day.. a real bad day. Spoiled the whole experience for me. Further, the boat was so big it didn't get in close.. I'd suggest using Holo Holo ONLY for winter whale watching trips as the boat size is an advantage in rougher seas and other services with smaller vessels for the summer Na'Pali / snorkeling trips as a far better choice. We just did and it was much better than what we saw on Holo and the staff was much, much nicer. I think Holo Holo thinks way too highly of themselves. My suggestion is to experience the better and more personal services on smaller boats where you can get in close and talk with the captain and crew anytime other than winter.. In my mind, if this is the only boat service you go on, you might love it.. If you sample others, you are going to prefer them. It's a world of difference. read more

This is a solid large charter company - so be aware of the difference between this and a smaller boat/crew/captain, as it's about catering to a larger crowd, and is automatically less intimate. If you've never experienced either to find your preference, this is a good option for the larger tour category. We went on an all-day large catamaran tour up the coast and then out to the "biologist island" to the west of Kauai. The scenery is gorgeous, the wildlife extraordinary, the snorkeling excellent - but that's Kauai for you. out of season pilot whale right next to the boat was a lovely bonus. The Holo Holo operation is bigger and more corporate, but the crew of our particular boat was what earns them a 4th star from me. Food? Average. Commentary on the tour? Average. Care and attention from crew members to everyone both in and out of the water? Terrific. I watched them interact with lots of people, including some obnoxious high-maintenance types, children, first-timers in the water, and experienced travelers - and they were friendly, obliging, helpful as each situation required. Several people got seasick on the return trip and they gave them excellent help, all with a wonderful sense of humor. If you have a large party to go with, by all means book with them. read more

Best trip ever! The crew was amazing. Kelly and Ben rock!!! The Captain was friendly, funny, and informative. Booking our trip was challenging with so many tour companies to choose from but thanks to yelp we made the right choice. We had a great time and learned so much about the island and it's rich history.
