I usually frequent Monster, but tried this new spot today. We ordered 2 chicken pho to go. I love that they put some ginger paste in their pho and their broth is VERY flavorful. The rice noodles are square and it took awhile for them to soften in the broth. After awhile they got nice and soft but I would have preferred them to be softer from the beginning. I was excited to try this new pho place. The interior looks very nice and I they have the special chili sauce that I like. When we opened the chili sauce, it looked like there was mold. We asked the waitress to get a new one, no big deal. The service was good and the waitress was attentive. For such a new place, the plates and dishes were not cleaned well. I recently ordered Beef Pho, Combo Pho, and Honey Chili Glazed Wings for delivery from Holy Basil. The food arrived quickly and the portions were huge for the price. The Honey Chili Glazed wings were absolutely delicious and flavorful, and my boyfriend and I devoured them immediately. The pho, however, was very bland and a little disappointing. I'm interested to try other things on their menu and I'll definitely be getting those wings again, but I'll probably skip the pho. read more

So I came here because I love beef pho and this place had great reviews, plus I was in the area. Unfortunately, I don't know what all the hype is all about. I tried their beef pho (shank, tendon, and brisket)... there was only about six pieces of meat in there and barely any noodles. They approach you with a HUGE bowl, which gets you excited. Then you look down and see soup... ok... hoping that the gems of meat are down there somewhere and they want you to play treasure hunt, sure, I'm down. So I dive deep into the abyss of soup and got about 3-4 moderate sized grabs of noodles using my chopsticks. Hmmm. And (I counted) was able to catch about six small pieces of meat, which you could taste was beef... plus, I think the "brisket" was just deli sliced beef you get at the store. I almost tasted the smoked flavor they add to the store bought deli meat. So why two stars and not one? Well, the broth was actually pretty tasty. And if you put aside the food for a sec, none of the servers running around (must have passed by my table 12-15 times?), asked me how my food was. Hmmm. I think they were just hoping I leave. I did sort of notice that a few tables shared the same feelings as I. But what I did notice were a few regulars, in which their drinks were memorized by the servers and they would get a wave and a hello. One regular had their drink prepared as soon as she arrived and the server saw their presence. I guess I wish I was a regular? But back to the food... there's a place in Castro Valley on Castro Valley Blvd that has the best pho I've tasted this far. Huge chunks of fresh delicious meat with almost each bite. You leave there stuffed and you haven't even finished your bowl... so sorry Berkeley, I'll stick to my CV spot for now. read more

Randomly bumped into this place in Rockridge! It's a nice, new pho spot and I was pretty surprised by much of what was offered! The restaurant has high ceilings and an overall nice and clean design, with a second floor. The staff were super attentive -- they addressed my friend's vegetarian needs and he had a pretty good lunch! I even liked his tofu and garlic noodles -- minus the fish sauce. I had ordered a Vietnamese coffee, and I loved it! They served hot coffee with the condensed milk on the bottom so that I could brew it and stir it myself. A little extra work, but it added to the experience. I also ordered the Holy Basil Pho Combo; normally when I order a combo, it comes large, but this large was LARGE. This was probably the first time that I wasn't able to finish my pho! There was a large amount of both meat and noodles! We ordered take out to have at our office nearby. 1 Chicken Pho, 1 seafood pho, 1 Veggie pho, and 1 order of the Chicken spring rolls. We called right when they opened at got the food quickly and with a very friendly waiter at pick up. I only gave 4 because we did not eat inside the restaurant. But for pickup it was great. This is definitely one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurant I have had in the area. It's a must go when you are in the Oakland rockridge area. Each dish has its own flavor and it is all unqiue in their own ways. The chicken wing that make are phenomenal. I like the glazed one the best. The flavors all mixed together really well!! I highly recommend getting it. Also, I enjoy the raw beef. I normally do not like to eat raw beef, however this is one of the best raw beef I have ever tried. I would've given Holy Basil 5 stars if I'd reviewed it 10 months ago. I find the food tasty and I love the tofu garlic noodles but the last few times I've ordered it the noodle portions seemed much smaller. I tried to partly remedy this by paying for extra garlic noodles the last time, but the portion of noodles I received was still less than some of the times I ordered without extra noodles. Tasty food is very appreciated, and although the price is higher than what you'd find elsewhere, the flavor and portion were what used to make it worthwhile. Maybe I've just had the bad luck of a few inconsistencies so because I still think it's yummy, I'll probably try ordering a couple more times to see what happens. Also, Holy Basil, if you're reading this- I would order from you more often if you were a Dashpass establishment! Forking over another $4 for delivery tends to make me look elsewhere even though sometimes I'd rather eat your food! read more

However, my daughter did not like the Pho probably due to the noodles, the pork in the spring rolls was very fatty, but the rice noodle bowls were very tasty. Been there maybe two times and I have no complaints. I live in Contra Costa so I don't eat there often but when I'm in the area, I make it a point to stop by and pick up my fave, the rice bowl with the jalapeño tofu!! Add some Hoison sauce to it too?? Michele and I went to Holy Basil for the first time. We were bitterly disappointed that Chu had shut down but we heard that the owners had repurposed the spot to open this new Pho place. I am almost embarrassed to admit it but this was my first Pho. We were delighted with the same high quality food and excellent service we had been accustomed to at Chu. Wasn't clear with the concept but I built my own vegetarian Pho bowl. It was so tasty and had a kick of heat to it. It was a massive bowl. Took three meals for me to finish it. The spring rolls were very good with a lovely sweet and tangy sauce. They have a small bar that makes a decent martini but their beer selection is way to small. The space is nice and airy and lends for quiet conversation. Its next door to a medium sized parking lot and after 7:30 or so you should be able to find a space. read more

Absolute best pho and rice bowls. The fried imperial rolls and chicken wings are the best I've ever had. They offer a lemongrass spicy oil for dipping that is amazing. They will sell you some to take home which is great on a lot of home cooked dishes. The owners make you feel very welcome and treat you like family. I rarely write reviews- but I have to say that everything we have tried from Holy Basil Pho has been outstanding! And that's hard to do on take out. Many of my favorite sit down restaurants just don't do quite as well via take out. But Holy Basil delivers delicious phos, garlic noodles, curry noodle soups, buns- really all have been great. Unique broths, nothing is over cooked, veggies are crisp tender and the whole experience is delightful. The only think I would change would be to get a little bit more mint and Basil that's it! If you haven't tried them yet I would highly say yea! Do it! Won't be sorry! read more

This Vietnamese Restaurant is a welcoming addition to the College Ave. The nearest Vietnamese joint which resembles a hole in the wall would be near the Claremont Tennis Club or more choices are found on Broadway. The owner is the same probably for the previous Chu's. So the decor looks the same to me (I could be wrong). But the ambiance is very comfortable at lunchtime. The waitress was very attentive. I ordered some simple dishes, my usual, so that I can compare the food, Spring Rolls and Pho with Meatballs. The presentation of the dishes were good and the flavor was spot on. I have a strong feeling this place is going to be at the next biggest thing in Oakland for Vietnamese restaurant. Staff here is very friendly and knowledgeable. They have a Huge open bar right as you walk in. Loving the interior design and how spacious it is as well. I had the combination bun because when I Saw on their menu it comes with Imperial that I'm a sucker for. The food is very refreshing and on point, especially the Imperial rolls. One of my favorite spots for pho! Whenever I am in town I will stop in to get my fix. The combo pho and basil lime wings are so delicious. Their prices are higher than others but the proportions fit the price. If you dine in, you will notice the amount more so than with take out. Solely, because the take out bowl is just smaller in size. The inside of the bowl is full though. I have also tried the wonton seafood which was also impressive amongst a few others. My friend is obsessed with the vermicelli bowls and that when dining in is even more impressive in size. I have recommended this spot to many friends who now frequent on their own. After church I wanted some hot pho for the cold fall weather. The closest place was here so I dropped by. I ordered a regular beef pho. First of all, the noodles were slightly over-cooked. Maybe some people prefer this but I usually like mine slightly undercooked or perfectly cooked. Other than that, the broth was bland. Usually many pho places give you cilantro to add yourself but here they added some (very little) to your broth already. I like my pho with a lot of spices and cilantro, but this pho was bland. Maybe today was an off-day, so maybe I'll try again in the future. read more

I didn't like the pho very much. It's a fancy place but the food is weird. The egg rolls were really strange and seem to be entirely made of meat mix without the traditional crispy shell. Spring rolls and the make ur own plate. Of all the pho restaurants I have been to this I will say is the worst of ALLL. the pho was nasty($15'+tax). Spring rolls was rolled loosely as to the point when I bit into it everything else fall out. The combo plate? Ok. Bao was great. No complaints there. Service was horrible. Bottom line is that I paid $72.+ tips for the worst Vietnamese food ever. Oh. Did I mention that I asked for3 tea and 3 water?I was charged $6 for the tea!!!???!! No where on the menu did I see that. Holy Deliciousness! I came here for lunch with a friend today, it was a first visit to the restaurant for both of us. I had the Garlic Noodle Bowl with Jalapeño Salt & Pepper Fried Tofu, and my friend had the Garlic Noodle Bowl with 5 Spice Pork. The food was fresh, beautifully presented and great-tasting. The restaurant was simply appointed and the space felt open and airy due to the layout and a 2nd floor. Acoustics were good, and I would imagine that even when this restaurant gets busy it's never too loud. Our server was very kind and welcoming. Next time I visit I plan to try the Pho Noodle Soup.
