Aung Myanmar Noodles (GF) with shrimp
    Patty P.

I went to Aung Myanmar to celebrate a friend's birthday and it was wonderful experience. First, it is amazing to have a new addition to Swan's Market, and second, the food was amazing. Somehow I didn't get a photo of the Tea Leaf salad but it was so good, maybe we finished it before I thought to take a photo! We also shared the paratha bread with veggie curry and lettuce wraps, both were flavorful. My entree the namesake noodles were great, the shrimp was juicy and perfectly cooked and the noodles were amazing! The service was quick, helpful, and consistent, and the vibe was quiet to begin with and the busy and full of life by around 7 or so on a Thursday night! Lots of families, friends, etc, hanging out.

Such a great addition to Oakland! If you're looking to try authentic Burmese food, Aung Myanmar is definitely worth a visit. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and was made with so much care. Our favorite dish of the night was the salt and pepper soft shell crab--it was perfectly crispy, well-seasoned, and something we'd order again in a heartbeat. We also loved the whole honey fish, which had the perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors, and the eggplant garlic, which was packed with flavor. I always have to order wings when I try a new restaurant, and their Burmese wings did not disappoint--they were incredibly crispy and so delicious. The service was warm and welcoming, and the staff made us feel right at home. We can't wait to come back and try more of the menu!

Learned of this new Burmese restaurant on social media and checked the Yelp reviews to help confirm what I was hearing - each review was 5 stars ! The location was a little tricky to find as i assumed the restaurant was in the heart of Swans Market but it's actually closer to Clay Street and 9th. We arrived around 5:30pm and were the first customers. By the time we left the place was nearly full. We decided on the tradition tea leaf salad medium spice level, the fiery chicken dish, 2 orders of coconut rice and the palatha bread/curry dipping sauce. Everything was so good and one serving of coconut rice is large enough for two people. The food was so good that I forgot to take pictures . Service was great and we had leftovers for the next day. Will definitely be back for more !!!

    Fish soup was perfect

Come on a Sunday at opening (11am) and the place was empty. We were seated at window seat which was nice. Ordered skillet shrimp with chili sauce, fish noodle soup ( their national dish), mint chicken (not enough mint), and coconut rice (on the sweet side). Overall food was fresh (piping hot!!) and arrived quickly, service was attentive. Will come back and try other dishes if we are in the area again.

Got takeout. Ordered the fiery tofu and the yellow curry beef. Absolutely incredible! Both dishes' flavors were so vibrant. The curry especially was packed to the brim and filled with a variety of ingredients, and I loooove variety. The service was great too, in terms of picking up. Definitely coming back.

    Burmese style chicken biryani

Saw this place open recently and was curious to try. I got dinner takeout and ordered the Burmese style chicken biryani and eggplant garlic. Food was prepared timely and arrived hot, and both were tasty. Really liked the eggplant garlic in particular, as it was very flavorful. Food was super filling and portion sizes were large - had enough for leftovers. I'll definitely be returning to try the rest of the menu!

I cannot say enough good things about our experience at Burma Superstar…read more My nephew and I were running late and arrived around 2:20 PM--after the kitchen had technically closed. Instead of turning us away, the staff graciously seated us and welcomed us with genuine warmth and kindness. That level of hospitality is rare and deeply appreciated. Our server, Hameed, was absolutely wonderful--so patient, attentive, and gracious even though we arrived at such an inconvenient time. He made us feel completely welcome and never rushed us. The food, as always, was extraordinary. The Tea Leaf Salad and Samosas were exquisite--bright, complex, and perfectly balanced. This was my nephew's first time trying Burmese cuisine and he was completely blown away. For our mains, I had the Shredded Mint Chicken, which was fragrant, fresh, and packed with flavor. My nephew ordered the Chili Lamb, and he loved every bite--rich, savory, and beautifully spiced. It was one of those meals where every dish delights, and you leave already thinking about what you'll order next time. Burma Superstar has long been one of my favorite restaurants in Oakland, and experiences like this are exactly why. Exceptional food, exceptional hospitality, and a team that truly cares about their guests. I will continue to recommend Burma Superstar most highly to anyone looking for a memorable meal in the East Bay.

Things changed: more breading on the chicken (spicy crispy chicken) and reduced protein in some of the other dishes, too. But the flavors still hit and its popularity hasn't dimmed much on the nights I've gone over the last few years. I bought their cookbook years back but much of what I like isn't in it, so I keep coming back for the food and community vibes. There is a communal table, which I appreciate though I tend to sit at the bar when I go alone. It's worth it to get a view of what's happening all around you. The B S in Alameda doesn't have the same energy or coziness, but it is easier to access with safer parking (now windows broken there but I've had that here and been hassled walking to/from) and dramatically shorter waits. The diversity of the diners is much lower than this one though (Alameda is still mostly old white people) and the menu has more options here, so I'll continue to return again and again and recommend it to others ... and hope to not have to replace car windows.

I've never had Burmese food before and finally got to try them on this last visit. We ordered delivery from them. Even if they gave an estimated time of an hour wait, I don't think it even took 30 minutes, which was great! We ordered a good amount of things including the star of the show- laphet thoke, the tea leaf salad. I've never had this before but I will sure be dreaming about it until I return. It had the best flavor and a good amount of crunch. Did I mention the portion was big?! We also got a few entrees including Burmese style curry chicken, sesame chicken, and another chicken dish. Also, the second star of the show is their coconut rice. I've never had anything like it, the right amount of sweet with their savory dishes. Everything was so good and fresh and delicious. I'll be dreaming about this spot until I return!

I really loved the interior design. Everything was clean and well put together. The restaurant had a smaller, cozy feeling but still felt spacious enough to sit down and enjoy a meal. My favorite parts were the cultural decorations and paintings throughout the restaurant. Little details like that made the experience feel more authentic. Even the cashier area was beautifully designed and added to the overall atmosphere. Customer Service - 5/5 The service was very good. The server was extremely welcoming and friendly -- I believe she might have been the owner. She greeted us with a beautiful smile and created a warm environment that made the whole dining experience even better. Small interactions like that make a restaurant feel more personal and memorable. Food - 5/5 Dish Ordered: Trei Chlaing Chein Kroeung (Pan Fried Catfish) 5/5 My first time trying Cambodian food, and honestly this was an amazing introduction to the cuisine. This was one of the best fish dishes I have ever had. The fish was cooked perfectly -- crispy golden skin on the outside while staying incredibly tender and flavorful on the inside. The sauce was what brought everything together. It was light with the perfect consistency, not too thick and not too heavy. You could taste the lemon coming through, adding the right amount of freshness and kick. There was a little spice, but not the kind that takes over the dish. It created a wonderful balance where every flavor complemented each other. The combination of the fish, sauce, citrus, and seasoning was simple but executed perfectly. Every bite made me want to keep eating. It was honestly delicious. Would I Order Again: 100% Yes. This is easily a dish I would come back for. No surprise this restaurant was previously Michelin recommended -- you can taste the quality and care behind the cooking. Additional Comment: I've always struggled with the idea that eating healthy means sacrificing flavor. A lot of healthier foods like salads can sometimes feel unsatisfying, but this dish reminded me that food can be both healthy and incredibly delicious when done right. I have passed by this restaurant ever since I was young, and it's amazing to see that it's still here after all these years. Seeing a restaurant with food this good not filled with customers honestly feels like a shame. Great food deserves to be discovered, shared, and supported. From the welcoming service, beautiful cultural atmosphere, and unforgettable food, this was an incredible first experience with Cambodian cuisine. I will definitely be back. This is the kind of restaurant you hope stays around for many more years.
