Becky's Chinese restaurant has been a staple restaurant in the Rockridge area of Oakland for over 25 years. They have amazing lunch specials and family dinner specials at reasonable prices. I enjoyed a lovely lunch with my Mom and here's what we ordered: The Broccoli Beef lunch special, Kung Pao Chicken lunch special and chicken chow mein. Keep in mind that the Kung Pao Chicken was a little spicy so for those that can't take spice I might skip this dish. Everything was fresh and delicious. Each lunch special comes with soup and salad and each entrée comes with fresh steam rice. They offer lunch specials from 11:30 AM - 3:30 PM. Their white steamed rice is always cooked to perfection...not sure how they get it that way, but it is very good and fluffy. Becky herself sometimes takes our order and is so nice and accommodating. There were several takeout orders being processed throughout our meal. Another good sign of happy customers. The parking in this area can be challenging, but you can circle the block and you're sure to find a park nearby. The best part about going to Becky's is visiting the neighboring stores around the restaurant. There are consignment stores, bookstores, and a European market directly across the street called Rockridge Market Hall. I highly recommend bringing a group of girlfriends or your mom here and just enjoy the neighborhood, fun shopping and yummy Chinese food!

Extremely Disappointing Experience We arrived at the restaurant at 8:45 PM, well before the posted closing time of 9:30 PM. At first, the ambiance was nice, and we were looking forward to enjoying our meal. However, the experience quickly went downhill once we felt the employees rushing us to leave. We were still eating when a busser approached us and, speaking in Spanish, told us to "go home." This was both unprofessional and inappropriate, especially since he assumed our language based on our ethnicity. He also mentioned that they "don't get paid overtime," which is not something a guest should ever be told. This ruined the dining experience completely--we couldn't enjoy our food. On top of that, the food itself was bland and stale. This was by far the worst treatment my family and I have ever received at a restaurant. We expected basic courtesy and quality, but instead, we were disrespected and rushed out.

I'd say stick to lunch and dim sum specials for the price and taste you won't be disappointed. Dim sum which at Beckys are basically small plates are such a good value, they even have Mongolian Beef. My hunan prawns were $14 before tax both items $23 after tax. Service is good here no complaints. Street parking free and paid is available.

    6. Szechuan Beef

Order 3 of their lunch specials from DoorDash. I ordered Mongolian Beef, House Chow Mein, and Szechuan Beef. Sadly the to go lunches don't have the soup. All three were reasonably priced $12-$13. The food was good for the prices. All three were packed with a lot of rice and if I ordered again I could just order the chow mein not as a lunch specials the foot itself was nothing special but it did taste good. My only complaint was that both the Mongolian Beef and the Szechuan Beef were listed as hot and spicy and there was no spice at all.

Every dish was so delicious!!! I will always go back to this restaurant. Thank you Becky's for all your good food! Thank you!!!!

This time, we ordered a few dishes to try - the classic sesame paste noodles, Shan Dong chicken, the fried rice with shrimp, and the hot spicy eggplant. Since we did order delivery on a busy Saturday night, it took a little over an hour for our food to arrive. The food was expertly packed and we were given plenty of utensils and napkins. The sesame paste noodles are one of my favorite dishes here, there's a balance of sweet and salty offered in the creamy sesame paste sauce that's so addicting. I've always been a big fan of the hand-pulled noodles which are thick, bouncy and chewy. The Shan Dong chicken is deep fried and coated in a delicious sauce. It is more of the sweeter side if you're looking for something that's spicy. I appreciate that we were given large pieces as well! The fried rice with shrimp is amazing - I love the crunch of the green onion, the softness of the fried egg, and the texture of the rice and veggies which weren't soggy and still held a nice bite. Last but not least, the hot spicy eggplant was a great choice because it's usually the trickier dish to cook as eggplant can turn really soft and mushy. I was delighted that with the way it was prepared, the large eggplant pieces still held a tender texture that did not fall apart. I also enjoyed the sauce that was paired with the eggplant, which is oyster-sauce based and added a pleasant sweetness as well. I'm always looking forward to my next visit and I love supporting Shan Dong!

They close super early, so get there in time for take out for dinner (I think they close at like 6?) Parking is an actual nightmare unless you're willing to pay or walk. But that's China Town for you. Service is fast and friendly. I like that they let me practice my Mandarin. It can feel a little crowded at times, but that's the price you pay for really good food.

Getting right to it, 4 stars because it's so affordable! However, there are some things I want to…read morepoint out that would actually make this spot more of a 3 star visit. 1. The attached parking garage charges $2/every half hour. Granted, this is no where near SF parking rates, it's still an additional fee. Street parking is super hard to find, and the streets are hectic, but you can test your luck (and patience). They use little tokens now that you have to pay for before exiting. Make sure you hold onto it because a lost token will run you $48 for the day rate. 2. The spot is poppin. It's not a complaint, that's a great thing! However it's really small inside so if there's a wait, you do have to line up in a single file line along a divider wall, where you can watch diners eat. Right next to you is the take out line for BBQ orders. It can get really claustrophobic. Tables do move fast as they're quick to bring out food, however you may be asked to just share a table with someone else. They have a couple round tables for the communal dining, or larger groups (up to 8). This is an ideal spot for 2-4 people. 6+ may cause you to wait longer for seating. 3. The tap water tastes kind of weird. They bring you a hot cup of tea too but the herbal taste is a bit too strong for me. 4. The bbq items are just okay :( I did a 3 item bbq combo with rice for about $21. You get a generous portion of meat, rice and a few pieces of steamed Chinese broccoli (gai lan). No sauce to dip or anything, but they do have a black bean sauce on the table to use. The sauce is pretty salty though, so just keep that in mind when you're adding it on. No spicy condiments on the table unfortunately. The duck was decent, but the bbq pork was a bit too lean for me. It wasn't overly sweet though so that was nice. The roast pork wasn't crunchy at all!! For some reason, they thin sliced it, instead of cut it into cubes. I love roast pork for the crunch so this was disappointing. The skin was more chewy than crunchy. All of the meats were tender though! 5. Fresh shrimp rice roll was hot and steamy and the price is cheaper than some dim sum spots ($7.50 for this one i think). However, you also get less shrimp. The sauce poured on was also kinda thin, and not sweet or umami enough. The rice roll itself had a good chew though, silky but a little thick. It holds up well while eating. The proportion go shrimp to rice noodle is waaaay off though. 6. Wonton noodle soup was good! This seemed like the crowd favorite as most everyone ordered this. The noodle could have had a bit more chew to it, but the wontons were bouncy and the broth comforting. You get a couple pieces of chinese broccoli with this too which is nice. The service was efficient and our main server was nice. She spoke english and actually smiled back. They take card payment too, so that's convenient. You really get some bang for your buck here, but I'd probably stick to taking food to go.

You know a dish is good when you tell yourself, "Oh, I'm just going to try a little bit of this."…read moreAnd then you can't stop eating it. This was my experience with pretty much every dish I ordered on a recent trip to Yu Yu Za Zang. I'll admit this is one of those places I've walked or driven past for years and have always meant to try but just never got around to it. But I finally had an opportunity to drag my cousin/regular dining buddy with me. We ordered Yang Jang Pi (also known as Double Skin in some places), regular jajang (spelled zazang here) myun, and tang sue yuk (beef - which is the traditional Korean meat for this dish). My cousin and I are huuuuuge fans of the Double Skin at Great China in Berkeley, so the Double Skin here had a pretty high bar to reach. We were pleasantly surprised to find it more than held its own. The portions of everything were very generous, and the mustard dressing was nice and spicy. Perhaps the veggies were not quite as crunchy as Great China's, so not as much of a variety of textures, but this Yang Jang Pi was still delicious, and I still think about it days after our visit. The jajang (zazang) myun was also very generously portioned and pretty tasty. I haven't had any in Oakland in a while, so hard to say how it compares, but I would definitely eat it again. The beef tang sue yuk was incredible. Again, large portion, perfectly crispy outside, tender beef inside, and one of the best sweet and sour sauces I've ever had with this dish. The vibe is simple and clean; nothing fancy, but I went for the food, so I was fine with that. The service was also friendly and fast. There were barely any people there on a Saturday evening, which made me sad, because the food really is good. I can't wait to try the rest of their menu. They also have soju and beer. Although Hanshin Pocha next door is popular, I could see Yu Yu Za Zang being a decent spot for delicious, very reasonably priced food that one can share with friends while having a couple of rounds of drinks. And in this economy, aren't we all looking for a good deal?
