I literally have to bring nothing but my vision for the perfect tree. It's been so helpful for me since I don't own a saw or know what to do with one. My kids love the cute barn where there is free candy canes and hot chocolate. They take debit card which is always a perk. This place has become a family tradition.

Prices were good, and the trees were nicely shaped. I didn't see many 8 ft+ trees, but there was a great selection for up to 7 ft. The grounds were a little muddy, and the trees were on a hill, but the trees were all planted in neat rows that made it easy to walk around and eye the trees from every angle. Once we picked our tree, we flagged down someone with a chainsaw, and they cut it down for us. The farm has a shaker and baler as well, and once our tree was prepped, it was loaded into our truck for us. It looked like the place was cash only, but there was a sign stating that they took checks as well.

Once you park on their driveway, walk up to their farm and pick your tree amongst the rows and rows of beautiful Noble or Douglas Firs which are either $30 or $40. Once you choose the one you want to take home, flag someone down by waving your hands in the air and they'll come your way with a chainsaw and cut it down for you and also tie it to your car. We were concerned because I've never cut a tree down, my knees aren't great, and I didn't know how much crouching and lifting I would need to do. I didn't need to worry! They gave us a business card with their phone number and directed us to the area where the type of trees we were looking for were located, and told us to call the number when we found it. They then drove an ATV up, cut & loaded our tree in, and drove us back down. Once there, they shook and baled the tree for us. I was happy that it was such a fun and stress-free way to get the freshest tree that fits our house AND fit in my hatchback. I highly recommend Hughes Family Tree Farm for both people who want the Full Family Tree Cutting experience, as well as those who just want a better, fresher selection than pre-cut tree lots.

I've enjoyed my first box of fresh produce from Lil' Starts: 3 bags of spring greens with fresh…read moreherbs mixed in; a dozen eggs, a colorful bouquet of irises, columbine and other spring flowers that I couldn't identify, a handful of edible flowers and farm made herbal tea. I picked my box up at the farm, but I had my choice of two farmers markets for pick up, too. It's convenient and fast. Lily, one of the owners, greeted me and showed me where my box was waiting for me. Lil' Starts' communication is clear and consistent: I receive an email every Sunday before my Saturday pick up on what to expect in the upcoming box. I signed up for a full share for every other week, which seems perfect for 2 people. I'm glad that participating in Community Supported Agriculture is so easy and delicious with Lil' Sarts--it's a prepaid up front in January affair, so it can feel like a bit of a risk. Trust me--it's a risk I'm glad I took because the pay off is wonderful, fresh food, and I'm supporting a local farm. Yes, I could do the same through farmers' markets, and I have. But this experience, and getting to see the farm and meet the farmers is important to me-- it's also a glimpse into how I grew up. The website for this farm indicates that the CSA shares are sold out for the 2018 season, which stretches from May to October. I can hardly wait for my next box and to see how the growing season expands into the next eating adventure.
