It was wonderful to be able to call Big Trees and set a time to see their trees. Daniel took us around and also helped us as we considered several types of trees. We determined that a Somerset Red Maple would be large enough and that it would be relatively easy on yard maintenance. The tour helped us decide that we really needed a tall (30' feet) to enjoy in the next few years. Big Trees was excellent at setting up a date and delivering the tree. It was amazing just to watch the equipment as they dug the hole and planted the tree (see pictures). Now we just need to follow their directions. Felix and the staff planting the tree were easy to work with. They helpled take down and reinstall part of our fence and they cleaned upt he site very well.

I really can't say enough good things about Chris - she was super knowledgeable, helpful, and patient in consulting which variety of lavender would best suit the space I had in mind and my use case (low maintenance and only needing one trim a year). Since she runs the place by appointment only, I first called then emailed with more details of the space I was trying to fill and what I was looking for. After some back and forth, I made an appointment to stop by, look at specific varieties, and pick out some plants. The day of, she went through the different families of lavender and helped me narrow down to a specific variety, looking at the dried cuttings from last year as well as plants in her garden. She also had plenty of other hardier medicinal plants available including multiple types of mints, thymes, rosemaries, and other herbs. All the plants are very reasonable priced and I couldn't be happier with my experience. It's very clear that Chris has a passion for her plants.

If you're anything like me, you need to see plant varieites in person, not just in your favorite garden design books. I can't make a decision on what's going in my garden unless I see how someone else has implemented it. Located in a residential setting, parking wasn't the first consideration when designing the layout of the farm. If you or someone you're visiting with has mobility issues, try dropping them off near the entrance before parking. The gravel path has a gentle grade and can pose risks for those prone to falls. But don't let that deter you from visiting the crown jewel of lavender farms in the area!

Holy Star always has so many great options for Nordmann Christmas trees. They have a few kid activities including finding the Candy cane tree, I-Spy activity, free apple cider, etc. Once you find the tree you want they come over and cut it down for you, blow the tree, and then tether it to your car (if you want them to). Our Nordmann Christmas trees have always lasted SO long from Holy Star and they make your home smell great too! I would highly recommend checking out this local Christmas tree farm.

It's about a 30 minute drive from my place in Tigard. The first time I went there, I realized that the owners have a huge plant booth at the Beaverton Farmer's Market where I have been supporting them for years. The hanging baskets are not the run of the mill big box store baskets, the colors and plants are terrific and unique. The typical annuals and perennials are there, but come in colors that you wouldn't see at other plant shops. I ended find a trunked yucca, only seen it once before in someone's mediterranen style garden in SE Portland. I picked it for a friend's birthday present since she has a large space with loads of sun. The owner was so enthusiastic when I confirmed what the plant was and he shared how it needs to be cared for. Hands down, highly recommend this nursery and the complimentary red vines can only help with the shopping. Also, if you want to make a day of it, there's a U-Pick strawberry field near buy as well as a winery.
